Ready at Dawn co-founder has revealed the now-shuttered studio pitched a sequel to PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886 to Sony, but was denied the chance to make it. Speaking to MinnMax in an interview on YouTube, Andrea Pessino shared he believes Sony didn't green-light another game based on the poor critical reception the original title got at its launch.
He said: "I don't think it was the sales, I think it was the critical reception, that's the thing. Sony is a very proud group and rightfully so, and the critical reception, if it had even been just in the 70s, we would have had the sequel, I'm convinced. Just a few points more and it would have been okay."
The Order: 1886 received a Metacritic rating of 63 upon its 2015 launch, and a 6.8 user score from over 4,000 verdicts closely lines up with that score. In our own The Order: 1886 PS4 review, we lined up with the overall reception with a 6/10 score and concluded: "The presentation is sublime from the release's rousing start right the way through to its anticlimactic finish, but several shoddy design decisions detract from its otherwise exemplary gloss. The developer's crafted an incredible universe, but outside of the title's core cast, it's failed to do much of note with it."
Funnily enough, we said the original game was "begging for a sequel to realise its undeniable potential", which Pessino claimed would have been ready around 2018 if Sony had given Ready at Dawn the go-ahead. It would have also come with a multiplayer mode alongside another cinematic single player adventure.
Pessino suggested the mock reviews it was conducting internally were "way higher" than what critics gave the game upon its release, and a non-negotiable release date of 20th February 2015 meant Ready at Dawn didn't have enough time to get the title in proper shape. "We needed another year, that’s the reality. We needed at least one more year, we didn’t get it, so we were like, cut, cut, cut."
He said that "a lot of the more subtle narrative parts were lost because so much was chopped away and things that were supposed to be interactive became a movie". One of the main flaws with The Order: 1886 was its overly cinematic approach, to the point where gameplay felt like more of an afterthought. It appears that wasn't how the game was first envisioned.
After making The Order: 1886, the California developer shifted its sights to the VR space, and was eventually acquired by Oculus Studios. Last year, however, it was shut down. Would you have played a sequel to The Order: 1886? Mourn the game that never was in the comments below.

The Order: Denied
If ever a game was milquetoast, this one was it.
I beat the whole thing and can’t remember a single thing about it. No character names, no area and environments. Nothing! 🤷🏾♂️
I remember it was a cool game but it was really short, and it felt like it ended right when it felt like it was getting to the apex of the story.
The order still has some of the most beautiful facial hair ever rendered in a game and for that alone, it deserved a sequel.
The Lore and Scenario had so much potential. I replay it from time time just for the atmosphere.
The Order is probably the very best example of a game that fell short of its full potential. I don't think it was bad. I enjoyed it while it lasted, it was/is absolutely fantastic on a technical level. It just could've been so much more.
Would have loved to have seen a sequel to this.
"I don't think it was the sales, I think it was the critical reception, that's the thing"
I don't think the game even sold well or at least pass 1-2 million copies cause i don't remember Sony say anything about the number. If it sold well, i think Sony would greenlight a sequel despite the mediocre reception. They usually give a second chance for devs to make a good sequel.
I personally enjoyed the game. The steampunk-victoria setting with werewolves was cool, the graphic looks amazing, and the VA was solid. But the shortcomings hold back this game from full potential:
It's a shame though cause Ready at Dawn made two solid God of War games, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, without The Order shortcomings.
I had a lot of fun with 1886 in the short amount of time it lasted and my goodness was it the easiest platinum I've ever gotten. I definitely would've played a sequel, as the ending clearly set one up, but I don't think multiplayer would've been a good idea. A potential sequel would've needed to be longer with more compelling gameplay.
This is one of those games that is a perfect weekend rental
I've always wanted to try this game but its never been on monthly PS+ nor PS+ extra. Why don't they put this on as a monthly game and gauge some interest in it. Feels like they just want to forget it.
All this game ever needed was more set piece firefights to pad the runtime a bit. It had some amazing weapons but you barely got to use them. GoW 1 (Gears) did this to add a few extra hours gameplay. Wholly unnecessary but those fights were lots of fun and made the game feel more complete than it actually was.
This was easily the biggest mistake that Sony made during this generation. RaD was unbelievably talented and could have made the sequel something special.
It was so short it felt like 1/3 of a game. I got it for cheap later on but I would have felt cheated if I'd paid full price for it.
I'm one of the few that loved that game. Unbelievable graphics sound and atmosphere.
If that game could run at 4k60 it would be better looking than most games today.
@Zeldorf Agreed. Their PSP run alone was the best of any dev on the platform. I always felt like the Order was a game that just needed a little more dev time, a little more content. AAA games today struggle to have such a rich character, atmosphere and visual identity.
Between stories of denied by Sony and cancelled, i am starting to question Sony’s leadership as to how to get a game started and finished. Seems like they are turning into the GOW, Horizon and Marvel console. PS5 is such a good machine but very little for me to get excited for. I buy a PS console for their exclusives only. Welp, better luck on PS6 at this point for me.
Bahahahaha of course bad reviews were to blame!! It was a terrible game that happened to have great visuals.
@PuppetMaster Also I remember reading somewhere that out of those 5 hours over 2.5 hours were cutscenes.
That’s too bad. It had so much promise and the cliffhanger will never be solved.
I enjoyed order 1886 but the game was not finished. To think it deserved anymore than a mid 60s score is just hubris.
I enjoyed my time with it, but it really was just a somewhat interactive film. I think the team made a mistake prioritizing they got the graphics right before the gameplay was ready so of course when it came down to it it was gameplay segments that got cut down. But hey, the game is 10 years old and still a visual stunner, you could release it today with a very minor touch up and it wouldn't look out of place.
I'm always down for more werewolf media & assuming the sequel would still be a Galahad game then it's potential was high. If Sony had released it as a budget $30 title it would have been a hit.
Really loved The Order 1886. Galahad was a great protagonist and I really enjoyed the steampunk alternate Knights of the Round setting.
Oh wow... the game is definitely not a 63.
It's more in the 7-8 range.
It was pretty good and it's sad it didn't get a sequel.
I still blame the stupid things the devs said at the time like making it 24fps to be more cinematic. Like... get a grip.
@Lowdefal
Arthur Conan Doyle?! Okay, I'm playing it.
@PloverNutter I don't remember much how long the cutscenes but i remembered they had quite a lot of QTE. The shooting section wasn't long too.
@8thDoctor The Order has AAA budget so no way Sony released the game at $30.
Sweet lord but this game was terrible.
I remember seeing the promotional videos & hype for it - the setting, werewolves everything sounded like it would be right up my street. Pre-order GET! Quickly returned to Amazon for a full refund. My memory is sketchy now but I remember QTE hell, awful combat, linear as as tightrope & shallow as a puddle in death valley. I've had more fun taking my own stitches out.
A real shame for the studio that it turns out it that it had a few plasters applied & rushed out as the concept was brilliant.
Great but too short game. I replay it now and then just for fun. The PS4-era was my favourite for sure. This game, Driveclub, Bloodborne, Uncharted 4, Last Of Us 2, Horizon, God Of War (2018) and so on. Win after win the whole generation. I loved it.
PS5-era... well, one day we get some games of that caliber on a regular basis I hope
I would perform a blood ritual if it meant this game got a sequel
While the game looked amazing at the time, the gameplay was really boring (don't forget that god awful ending). Hellblade 2 literally had the same problems.
The setting, atmosphere and graphics were all there. But it could definitely have been more interactive, have better gameplay, and the story could definitely have been better.
I loved it, and would have bought a sequel, no question.
It was short, but thoroughly enjoyable, and it looked - and still looks - stunning. I remember taking my time with it and taking (I think) about 8 to 10 hours to complete it; I think I needed to replay parts for a few missed trophies. I remember fighting through the airship, and a few fairly intense firefights on the ground.
I sold it on eBay after about a week, and got back basically what I'd paid for it, which was nice. Then a few years later, I re-bought it digitally in a PSN sale when it was really cheap, so that I could play it again.
Yes, I'd definitely have appreciated a sequel.
I didn't play it
Its interesting to see how his tone has shifted over time. He was all onboard for "short games" etc.
Well I really think it hurt this game. Maybe it was because the ending was lackluster that it left such a bad taste in everyone's mouth.
@Cornpop76 pretty much how I feel about it
It's a real shame. It came too late but an The Order 1886 sequel, made in the same semi open world style of God of War 2018, would have been amazing.
Like Assassin's Creed 1, the foundations of The Order were there, it just needed a sequel to flesh everything out better like in AC2 where you can collect every weapon in the game and have your own HQ, you can go back to..... and just about everything else that AC2 did better over the 1st one.
Such a waste of their engine to get no flex the past decade before they were shut down.
A lot of sequel games get cancelled from sony i see.word up son
To understand the visuals of The Order 1886, play it for a few hours. Then fire up the AC Syndicate E3 2015 Cinematic trailer and look at the bar scene during the last minute.
This trailer aired 4 months AFTER The Order launched, is a 100% CG cutscene..... and The Order 1886's inengine visuals, match it. Crazy.
Ah such a bummer. I love the Order 1886 and always thought it was a super underrated game. Yeah it's short, but the story, script, acting, visuals, setting, vibe, etc. are all top notch. If there ever was a game that deserved a sequel to truly unlock its potential, it was this game.
Now that Ready At Dawn is no more, Sony should definitely look to grab the key folks from this game and bring them in house to work on a sequel.
I would most definitely have bought a sequel. Whatever was there in the original, I enjoyed, even if the flaws were glaring. If there ever was a game with immense potential that a sequel would likely have materialised, this is it.
And in 2025, 10 years after its release, it stills puts many games to shame in the graphics department.
Yo shoutout to Ben Hansen and MinnMax, dude keeps doing interviews with the same quality that you had in Game Informer with a lot less resources and he's not afraid to ask any type of question.
It wasn't that good but a sequel could've improved it. But once again, Sony giving the suits what they want not what the paying public want.
It was definitely the sales. Sony doesn’t care if the game reviewed badly; if it still made “enough” money, they absolutely would have made a sequel.
"..the mock reviews it was conducting internally were "way higher" than what critics gave the game.."
There's problem no.1.
I completed the game and was looking forward to a follow-up.
Would love to see a sequel for an update for the PlayStation 5 that gets rid of the black bars
@PuppetMaster giant budget, but if you know the game is not in a great place, it might be best to aim for a lower entry point. People are way more lenient to issues if the entry point is lower, try to get your money back by selling more units overall. Heck, I would have gotten it at launch for about $30, I payed about $20 on sale and felt very satisfied with what I got for that.
@8thDoctor I remembered The Order got big discount multiple times like 2-3 months after launch. I've seen it very low at $5-10. The thing is after that big discount, Sony never comes out and say the game is selling well or recoup the budget.
So what makes you think tons of people would gladly spend 30 bucks for The Order at launch and closed their eyes at the issues when they didn't even bother getting the game at much lower price.
You could say you're satisfied with the game. But that's not the case with others who thinks why spend 30 bucks for a game with many issues that you could finish in 4-5 hours and lack replay value, when you can spend that money towards better games that has good replay value.
Visually stunning game, great atmosphere. Sadly too short, too much cut scenes etc. But I enjoyed it and it was an easy Platinum trophy to put on my digital shelf.
Still one of the most visually impressive games ever made. Only thing that bothered me is no character reflections in windows, mirrors or puddles. If they re-mastered it today in 4K with raytracing it would be incredible! Also I personally felt the criticisms of the gameplay, story, game length etc were overblown. 7/10 for me.
