@Dubplant No, with its reduced CPU performance, 60 fps games will probably run with only 30 fps, so you will definitely see it (unless you are one of those who „can‘t see a difference between 30 and 60 fps“).
Using a 1080p screen with a PS5 is not as bad as many might think though. Many games can hardly exceed this resolution in their 60 fps performance modes. And even if they exceed it by a wide margin, the downsampling of this image to only 1080p preserves a lot of detail, especially the anti-aliasing. The image might not be super sharp in details, but it should be overall very pleasing nonetheless.
@lazarus11 Many renowned experts say that this mode is a preparation for the upcoming PS handheld, which would have a similar performance in normal operation as the PS5 in power saving mode.
So when the PS handheld launches, there should be many compatible games available on launch day, especially all the PS Studio ones.
@Rich33 And these games are great entertainment and also creative, no question. I just want to make clear that these are very formulaic and safe and NOT a proof for self-claimed „creative leadership“. This claim is just vain BS. It was true during PS4 era and isn’t anymore, in my opinion. They should could just say „most entertaining single play games“, and nobody would complain.
@Oram77 @LogicStrikesAgain Yes, these games are sequels in the safest possible way. Risk aversion of SIE kills creativity! At least they made Astro Bot, a shining beacon in Sony‘s portfolio.
And sequels don’t have to be samey. Tears of the Kingdom was such a creative twist of the world and formula of Breath of the Wild. In a similar way this holds true for Echoes of Wisdom, compared to A Link‘s Awakening, while Super Mario Bros. Wonder and especially Donkey Kong Bananza introduced completely new gameplay mechanics. And all these games released in 2023 or later.
@PuppetMaster Thank you! Many of the values there are totally outdated. The last numbers for Returnal stem from 2021, and I suspect that this game is more of a slow burner, so the mentioned 560k should not be indicative for the today’s numbers.
Why is Sony so cautious? Or is it so hard for them to get the sell-through numbers?
Nintendo tells the exact shipment numbers for all of its games (what is sold to the retailers), while Sony is very shy telling anything about SIE published games. I guess they become less and less relevant for the total market.
SIE is becoming a console platform holder with only few exclusives, which is dangerous in a gaming world tending towards mobile and PC.
With wobbling walls and unfiltered textures, PS1 graphics looked as rough back in the day as they look today. It gets a lot of praise these days, but the most legendary console games of that era were Super Mario 64, Mario Kart 64 and Ocarina of Time. Only FF7 comes close.
My finding here: Subscription services are great to bring games from developers with financial troubles to life. Because these developers are so happy that they probably accept almost every price. Clever from Sony!
I‘m afraid that Sony isn’t able to produce a cheap console anymore. Moore‘s law may still be in place for transistor density, but certainly not for compute power.
With Microsoft aiming for a console-like PC as their next Xbox (with high price point), the lack of competition for Sony is not helping in getting a cheap PS6.
I think many customers will stick to their existing PS5s much longer than they did with their PS4s. But this would also be some kind of sustainability.
@AverageGamer Okay, but I think Arrowhead SHOULD start developing Helldivers 3, to have it as a launch title for PS6, with release on all platforms on the same day.
It’s both funny and tragic that Sony’s first attempt of their 12 game live service series is by far the most successful one (correct me if I’m wrong). The goal now has to be to double down on that.
This sales numbers graph, despite based on guessing instead of confirmed facts, looks very healthy. And now think of all these micro transactions!
I would shift all of the remaining staff of Haven to making updates for Helldivers 2, while Arrowhead should start development of Helldivers 3 (if they haven’t already).
I can’t remember another month in which I liked all three games. Sony very certainly read my comments here that I want to not renew my subscription. They are making the right steps to keep me.
I‘ve never played an AC game, and I‘m tempted by Origins and Odyssey. Both seem to have a good reputation and run well on PS5. But I want to start with one game (they’re long enough) and can’t decide. I want „the better one“.
Sounds great! Enough stuff to fill the porting pipeline for Nightdive, in case there is a drought for new external orders. The revenues from sales of ported games help to keep the Nightdive staff paid and intact.
@get2sammyb Thank you! These prices for add-ons are really special. So it’s no wonder that it’s called Special Edition.
TSW5 is on PS Plus Extra, which I don’t have. Would be great to get a time-limited demo (not PS Plus Premium bound) of TWS6 to find out whether is someone’s cup of tea!
The older I become, the more interested I get about these simulators with trains and trucks (excuse me, lorries). But the most interesting route for me (Mannheim - Kaiserslautern, I used these red trains for several years) is only included in the very pricey Special Edition.
Are there chances for significant discounts in the near future?
@Rich33 In my understanding it’s not particularly difficult to bring PSSR to UE5, but its own TSR works so well and is tuned for the UE5 features that other solutions have a hard time to compete.
And that brings us to FSR4 on PS5 Pro: Will that work better on UE5? Nobody knows right now (except engineers from AMD, Sony and Epic).
PSSR seems to be an interim solution, with bad chances for long-term support from Sony. As a game developer, I wouldn‘t use it. FSR 4 is clearly the future.
These constant frame drops seem to stem from poor DRS settings, i.e. the resolution is set too high to maintain 60 fps (while the resolution is already abysmally low).
Based on the latest price increases, I‘m not surprised by the very high sales numbers for Switch 2. While in the past you could expect a discount a few years after release, now you must expect a price increase.
The best strategy now is to buy hardware day one. And even for software, heavy discounts for popular games aren’t a given anymore.
I‘m generally interested: Who in fact determines which games become available on PS Plus? Is it the willingness to pay from SIE? Or is (in this example) Capcom holding back their titles due to strategic reasons, now releasing them to building up hype for Requiem?
Either way, getting games into PS Plus looks like a huge permanent negotiation to me.
Michael Pachter: „Fairgame$ canceled“ -> A simple and clear statement, but no proof.
PlayStation spokesperson: „committed to supporting Haven Studios and excited to continue the journey“ -> Is Fairgame$ still part of this journey? I don’t read it from this statement, and Haven might now be working on something completely different. But maybe the quote is incomplete, and the original quote still includes Fairgame$.
Sammy Barker: „Don‘t believe Pachter, it sounds like he’s associated Raymond’s departure with the project’s cancellation, which isn’t the case.“ -> Does he know more than Pachter? Or is it just a different interpretation of Sony‘s statement than mine?
Edit: I could open the full article with this spokesperson‘s statement, which is completely cited in the article above (https://archive.is/20250516013448/https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-15/playstation-executive-jade-raymond-leaves-studio-she-founded). But I couldn’t find a statement on SIE‘s PR website. Therefore: Still no signs for me that this „journey“ still includes Fairgame$, it could already be cancelled.
„But it’s clear, whatever Microsoft says, its subscription cannot support the size of its development network anyway“
That is a bold statement. I am interested to see the underlying calculation which justifies the claim that Microsoft is not telling the truth. Additionally, what is Microsoft really saying? And for multi-platform games like CoD, I haven’t ever seen any claim from Microsoft that they should become Xbox exclusives (which could lead to the assumption that Game Pass alone could finance them) - these were ridiculous statements from fanboys and Sony during the ABK acquisition process.
