You will have seen that Sony released a new PS5 firmware update this week, but did you know it's updated the PS4 as well?
Yes, Sony's last-gen console recently got its own system software update. Available to download and install now, the PS4 has been updated to version 13.00, which is a pleasingly round number.
So, what the heck does version 13.00 bring to the table? Not a whole lot, to be honest, but it's worth going over these things anyway.
Here are the official patch notes for PS4's latest software update:

- We've improved the messages and usability on some screens.
And that's your lot.
It's good to see Sony continue to support the PS4, especially as it still has a huge install base in 2025.
We doubt the console will receive any major new system software features at this point, so updates going forward will be small like this one, patching up security or making subtle improvements.

I had already found a solution to fix the usability of some screens — simply turn off the PS4 and turn on the PS5.
@Th3solution Considering that one of the biggest complaints against the PS5 has been its UI this is a foolhardy solution.
Ok... cool.
I still use my PS4 in my bedroom, so I guess it's nice to know the platform is still being monitored.
Still think the PS4 is the best looking PlayStation console. I really hope the PS6 follows a similar design philosophy.
@wildcat_kickz Agreed, PS4 is unmatched when it comes to looks, sleek, compact and of course black colour scheme.
I was hoping for some stability updates but it's too much to ask nowadays.
@Czar_Khastik
They're coming in next years patch!
PS3 got a firmware update today as well.!
I hate I could no longer near trophies on my PS3! That's not cool.
I should hope so; they're still releasing games for it.
i sold my ps4 (pro) a long time ago; amazing console but it’s just no reason to have one anymore, even though the ps5 is inferior in several ways to it , it can still play its games. i do miss the ps4 generation though, it was an exciting gen with s*** to look forward to all the time. 2015-2018 was peak and an amazing time to play on playstation.
Switched it on this morning just to like "heat up the engine" a bit after a while of no usage and saw the update.
@nomither6 Like you I'm not seeing any reason to keep the PS4 anymore when every PS4 game is looking and playing better on the 5 so that inferior comment...naah especially when the PS4 couldn't play PS3 games. I never felt overwhelmed with so much to play on the 4 but just the BC along with new games feels so overwhelming on the 5. If it's games you're talking about like none from ND or R* so far, then that's not the console's fault.
@Czar_Khastik Stability improvement updates come only in months which don‘t end on an R.
@TheArt in my opinion, of course. the ps5 has the better hardware, sure. i’m talking about relative to their times the experience they provided. ps4 was more exciting & there’s still some things ps4 has (or had) that the ps5 doesn’t software wise.
also ps4 controllers didn’t drift nearly as much as driftsenses
@Oram77 .. then you hear it taking off like an A380 and it's back to the PS5 and blissful silence.
@themightyant Oh absolutelty, I had the fire brigade on speed dial when my PS4 got like that....
Still got my PS4 Pro 72xx series with 1TB internal SSD under the TV.
If anything, it seems about as quiet as the PS5 for the majority of games. And I still prefer the DS4 on looks and ergonomics.
I highly appreciate this kind interest from sony.
Regularly using my PS4 regularly.
Can not be more happy.
Thank you.
Dear friend @wildcat_kickz
I can not agree more!
Thank you for pointing that out!
It is among the main reasons why I hardpassed PS5 (alltogether) upon release.
Hopefully, sony will give up on extremely chunky and hidious design and return to fundementals.
Fingers crossed.
Dear friend @Czar_Khastik
Yes, you are correct! They make us to think, it is too much too ask from AAA game developers. But (apprently) not really, from sony, which is good and we appreciate that
@LifeGirl Ah, so true. Although I’ve grown accustomed to the PS5 UI, I still prefer the PS4’s. However, it’s not been enough to keep me engaged with my PS4. I also still much prefer the feel of the DualShock 4. Despite the better UI and controller design, I’ve gradually abandoned my PS4 because of the slower loading and overall inferior performance, even for PS4 games. Also, my PS4 WiFi antenna is temperamental at this point and doesn’t always connect. So it’s basically gathering dust now.
Still playing on ps4 all the time. Screw dualsense, most uncomfortable controller ever for the ugliest console of all time.
Yep, still on PS4. Not really seeing any reasons to "upgrade" to PS5.
Cool. I’m playing Shadow of the Colossus in my PS4 Pro at this moment. I upgraded the internal storage to a SSD some time ago. I love it.
Not been prompted with it yet so I'll check today if I get it. I think the last update was a bit eh with my HDMI or my TV connection, the PS4 just didn't want to respond well. It had the white light and just wouldn't reach the display at all. That and like Wii mode on Wii U (to the TV as doesn't appear on the Gamepad) you have to get a code to get the PS second screen/remote play app working on a Vita or phone and it's a pain so I gave up on that and just kept getting my PS4 into safe mode (which is annoying to get it to beep after holding it long enough). It was like cycling my phone a few times, at least old ones i could remove the battery, nowadays it's just a pain of it freezing and 'working it out' or powering down like crazy it's just dumb. So my PS4 I power disconnect or safe mode force it.
It works well now but even still. It could happen again if the installer is stuffed.
Don't think it's the hard drive as I can leave the console on in the main OS menu and it works fine now, prior i had to have youtube or a game open, the PS Store wasn't enough. Hasn't happened in a few updates now so still happy about that.
Will see, what performance it's fixing, not just 'oh it's to prevent hacking' I hope it isn't as while I get it I'd like some fair final fixes for PS4 and not hacking targeting by Sony.
I use a stock system so to me I'd like good stability updates.
Not like Microsoft's 360 update with Series S/X and no 2026 clock fix or other stuff, because that was a wasted update.
The Vita prevention PS3 update for security and blocking PS1 or others sending is annoying but that update happened a while ago now.
The update doesn't seem to do much as expected. They say some messages have changed (doesn't say which ones) but I suspect it's security loophole fixes and perhaps updating its Blu-ray key as well.
Never made the move to PS5.
My original PS4 is in the bedroom and my PS4 Pro is still rocking in the living room - both see regular use.
With a substantive backlog, I've not seen a reason to "upgrade"
