@naruball Who said anything about sales? I just mean that their games are, imo, far better quality than anything Activision have ever produced. For me Yakuza and Persona are in my top 5 franchises of all time.
Not that I'm suggesting this but Sega would be the only thing that can counter both the Zenimax and Activision buyouts imo. And unlike MS Sony can actually legally do it as their HQ is still in Tokyo and are not restricted by the Japanese Foreign Investment Laws.
As far as I know Sega's worth about 5bn so Sony could afford them.
Y'know, everyone goes on about Tencent buying everything to be the worst imaginable thing. But isn't that exactly what Microsoft are doing at this point and everyone on the Xbox side, who fears Tencent, is celebrating this? Double standards much?
At this point I'd rather Disney bought everything, atleast it's open to everyone then because they have no obligation to either platform holder.
@TheRedComet Yeah I get what you're saying but I think this behaviour, whoever it be between Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or any of the others buying up big publishers hurts the industry more than it helps it. I see your point and agree to a degree but I think this is creating a bigger divide than ever and those who celebrate it for the sake of "my box is better than your box" are cheering for something that will do more harm than good.
Microsoft leaving the other two platforms out is just plain anti-consumer in my opinion. And I'd say the same if Sony did it. Only difference is they can't afford a huge publisher and anyone they have acquired are generally small, and mostly, unknown fish. Not that it's any more right to do so. We need big third parties and soon there won't be if this continues.
@TheRedComet I mean, yeah they are a threat but my thinking is what is the point in buying a huge publisher where you got all the games anyway? And then proceed to release them everywhere except one platform? If it's about keeping games safe from the likes of TenCent and Apple then why not still sell them to PlayStation if Sony are not their competitors?
How can this be seen any other way? I think Phill is full of it and people believe him. Otherwise he could have both sides of the pie. Xbox fans get the games for a low monthly fee and force PlayStation fans to pay full price. It still favours their primary platform. But no, he locks out another platform entirely meaning this is absolutely about punishing those who don't buy Xbox
I personally don't play anything Activision publishes other than Spyro but this simply can't be justified as good for the industry. Yet Sony gets flak for timed exclusives all across the internet. How is that fair I ask you?
What is the point in buying a big publisher when every platform already gets all the games that publisher and their developers offer?
Simple, it locks out only one platform, PlayStation. Phil and his customers are huge hypocrites. Phil says "exclusives are bad for the industry" and "it's not about punishing PlayStation" then what is the point in a move like this when you were already getting the games?
Guaranteed, when PlayStation gets their next timed exclusive Phil and his fans will make big complaints about it while conveniently ignoring this. It's bad for the industry no matter how his next PR spin will try to say otherwise.
Phil and his fans are hypocrites. They say exclusives are bad for the industry but pull this stunt. Phil can try to weasel his words to make this sound good for the industry all he wants but the only thing he does with these stunts is lock PlayStation out of games while everyone else gets them, that's all there is to it. Punishing PlayStation players for not buying an Xbox, it's disgusting and yet none of the fans will call him out on it.
Meanwhile Sony buys one timed exclusive and they are called evil among all the other names under the sun. How is this fair? There should be rules against a monopoly like this.
When KotOR comes as a 'Console Exclusive' I better not hear a single Xbox fan complain since they are cheering for this.
@darksoul77 Ah you're playing through Origin. I've been trying to run mine from the CD-ROM, maybe that's why. I might have to just buy it again on Origin.
@zebric21
It's already been pirated (GoW). It's started to appear on torrent sites. Persona 4 Golden was pirated less than 24 hours after it released on PC despite them begging for a port for nearly a decade.
This is one of the reasons I feel PC players don't deserve the console games they beg for. With Persona they had the audacity to complain on Reddit of poor performance of the pirated copy. Unbelievable. Their entitlement sickens me.
I'll probably get called out for this comment as it's a touchy subject but PC game piracy is a huge problem that will never go away due to the nature of the open platform.
@TooBarFoo I don't have the backwards compatible PS3, mine was the 40GB version which I later replaced with a super slim for space. It's still connected to my TV now but what worries me about the BC PS3 is the many Reddit posts I see of them failing, they seem, eventually, unreliable.
I still have my fat PS2 working as good as the day I got it and recently have been revisiting Mercenaries Playground of Destruction and Silent Hill 4.
In terms of legacy I remember watching one of the PlayStation broadcasts recently where Jim Ryan said "At PlayStation we respect our legacy" I shouted at the TV "Bo***cks! Where's the BC, then!" lol.
@TooBarFoo Yeah that's what I was getting at. I assume that newer devices neglect using old technology in the thought that hardly anyone uses old discs these days. And it saves them money.
In terms of a games console though it would make sense to play old games and would have been a selling point to a lot of people in my opinion. To use drives compatible with older laser readers would have been a smart decision for Sony, it would cost a bit more to have but they would get that back with peoples desire to play old games. In many ways I think it would get them more sales just for that.
Jim Ryan however, atleast initially said "who would play these". The 'retro' community is bigger than he thinks.
I have my old consoles and still play them so I'm good either way, but to play them all on one device would be nice. Even I am considering an Xbox to play my older discs again, especially given how unreliable the X360 could be. I'm assuming the PS5 can't read old discs and it's a big mistake from Sony if that be the case in my opinion.
@TooBarFoo I'm still curious how Xbox is able to do it with discs. Most Blu-Ray drives lack the red laser switching that is required to read CD's and DVD's which all Xbox games prior to the Xbox One used. Unless they use one that has both the red and blue laser reader on the series X it is technically impossible.
@TheDudeElDuderino
Again, that's my opinion and I'm allowed to have it. Who are you to tell me what I can and can't think or believe?
If you intend to be offensive towards a person for their opinion on a practice, and again it wasn't directed at a person or individual, then maybe you should just mind your own business?
Again, I'm allowed my opinion and you are allowed yours. Don't think you have the right to attack someone for what they are allowed to think.
@TheDudeElDuderino
Take it down a notch? Entitled? No dude, it's called an opinion against modern practices of taking customers for granted. You mention real world time constraints? It's not like they've had 24 years or anything to consider the direction they would take it.
I too am an of fan of the original, I was 12 when it came out. You may not regret the purchase as you say, and that's fine, but some of us are tired of this kind of greed.
They make millions in profit either way, they say games cost a lot to make, and they do but they also make huge profits because millions more people buy games than we ever did in 1997.
That comment regarding entitlement goes around a lot these days based on an older guys personal opinion and your condescending and offensive attitude is not appropriate, maybe you should take your own advice before attacking someone for an opinion on a practice and was not directed at an individual, huh? People are allowed an opinion, as you are yours.
@Reeneman
I've been reading that @TwistedGaming guy's comments. And Xbox fans have the nerve to say we are the toxic ones. Pfft.
I don't disagree there are some very toxic PlayStation fans but those Xbox only guys want to take a look in the mirror.
I actually threw shade at this game when it released because I was unhappy with the 'episodic' nature of its delivery. Three parts of the original across three different full game releases. My friends told me I don't understand the way they are releasing it but I believed (and still think) it's the original three part disc split into three full price releases, which if true I considered unacceptable.
I haven't played it nor read up on it to know if that is true but since it's 'free' on PS+ maybe I'll check it out. I just hope I'm wrong about the 'episodic' three disc split because it's a disgusting idea and I refused to pay for that. When some games, even on Blu-Ray can have multiple discs in a box there is no excuse.
The black one with the PS2 blue logo and etching on it would have been nice for its 20th anniversary. And use the original colours for the PS symbol on the top left.
On a slightly unrelated note I normally don't have problems with controllers breaking as many others do but I have with the DualSense. The R2 trigger became very loose to the point of very high sensitivity at simply resting a finger in it. I assume it was due to the pressure sensitive feature they put into it.
Sony replaced it for free since it was under warranty but it does make me worry about durability. I've disabled the feature for now.
@themightyant Well I'm 34 now and used to watch the original run on Saturday mornings on UK GOLD. There may have been an underlying, over exaggerated sense of social awareness but it just seems more apparent these days where everyone feels offended by something.
I mean, I just let them get on with it and stopped watching. I suppose I just miss simpler times, or maybe it's ignorance on my part. Like you said, 'grumpy old sod' lol.
@MightyDemon82
The classic series (pre Chris Eccleston) was more Sci-fi than drama. The rebooted series is a bit cringy sure, but the Whittaker tenure takes it to a whole new level. I mean, calling her companions 'fam?' you're a two thousand year old alien, not a 16 year old millennial.
And I think the BBC are now using its popularity to push an agenda. In an interview with one of the actors the stated "Doctor Who has always been about tackling real world social issues".
Since when have flying police boxes, aliens obsessed with the genocide of all life and humans turning into metal men been 'real world issues?'
After (in my opinion) Chris Chibnall destroyed Doctor Who with his ridiculous storyline, terrible writing and cringy acting from Jodie Whittaker, coming from a fan that has watched every episode from the first in 1963, I told the BBC to shove their TV licence where the sun don't shine.
Good for people that still watch the BBC I suppose.
It just sounds like a typical corporate greed situation of "rush it out for Christmas sales, money now, fix later".
I dislike how gaming has become more corporate and greedy. I mean it was always sort of like that but in the 80's and 90's Devs actually gave a damn about game production and fun.
@MFTWrecks
I'm a sucker for Pokèmon unfortunately. And Zelda games. Even so, generally the price of Sony first parties are now more expensive than Nintendo's. At launch anyway. Nintendo games never really drop in price by much if at all.
@auditor01 They haven't increased in a long time in some countries but here in the UK they did. At the start of the PS4 generation they went up from an average of £39.99 during the PS3/X360 generation to £54.99 and then increased again at the start of the PS5 generation to £69.99 each. That's a big jump in just 7-8 years to almost double the price.
Normally I would buy my games at launch and leave them on the shelf until I am ready to play them despite continuing to work my way through my back catalogue.
Now though, I haven't bought Ratchet and Clank or Returnal yet. I will eventually but when I'm caught up with the games I'm currently playing. By then they'll be cheaper, and I always buy physical not digital.
Currently playing Immortals Fenyx Rising and soon will be moving on to Oddworld SoulStorm. Both are physical PS5 copies despite Oddworld being given away on PSPlus.
I get Sony need to make money but I think they're being greedy where they can't afford to. This could push gamers away from PlayStation rather than to it, especially when some people don't care about Sony first parties or exclusives in general while Phil Spencer continues to dangle that GamePass carrot in front of everyone.
You would have thought they'd be against selling any of their business since the whole reason they exist is that they are the original RARE team that broke away from Microsoft.
Strange. I hope it doesn't impact their quality. I loved Yooka-Laylee and it felt like taking a step back in time to the 90's playing them.
Edit. Also I don't know a lot about Tencent but I hear a lot of people claim they are bad. Can anyone explain why?
I remember buying the double box edition with a demo disc inside it, (can't remember the demo). A timeless classic. I would love a remaster of the original 5 games from the PSone in a single box. Similar to what Rockstar just did with GTA.
I've been meaning to replay Angel of Darkness. I don't know why it wasn't very well received. I never finished it on PS2. I will revisit at some point.
Well it's been a good run for the last 27 years Sony but here we are. PlayStation consoles are no longer special. The one thing that set them apart was exclusives.
I'm glad I haven't yet bought many games on PS5 due to my backlog. That's just means I now don't have to because if 2 or so years is all I have to wait at present for the best version then so be it.
You expect me to pay £70 plus an online fee to play the worst version of your games?
The writing is on the wall and day and date games are inevitable.
This will not sell PS5's for the new installment as now it's clear future games will be ported regardless where that wasn't apparent before.
Since you seem intent on treating loyal console owners who have stuck with you since day one of the PSone as second class then so will I.
The PS5 is going in the cupboard and a new PC will take its place. And as many PC players do, I'll be playing all of the best versions of your games for free.
Bought this game for less than £20 about 3 years ago and it is definitely underrated. I loaned it to my friends and they all loved it too. I hope we get a sequel some day. I wonder how successful it ended up being?
While I support Sony on the first 'infringement' if there is indeed a filed or pending patent I believe this time they wouldn't have grounds to sue, the design is an entirely different shape.
I don't mind the look but feel it will have problems. From an air flow perspective the 'collars' of the original are designed in a way to move heat further from the system. When the heat/air hits the collar the curve of the shell will push the heat away, this design will not do that.
Furthermore, with the exhaust position, this would likely be a problem for people who place their console horizontal. The gap that the stand creates wouldn't be sufficient enough to dissipate all of the heat which would cause a build up and possible overheating.
Personally I'm keeping mine original and will trade it in for a slim when they eventually come.
For those who called Sony out for their threat, have you considered that the reason is due to the possibility that they intend to eventually release their own and don't want a third party to eat at their profits? Perfectly reasonable. And the 'car' comments make no sense. General car parts are not patented.
There were a number of things that could have made the PSVita a huge success.
1. As many have said mSD memory cards, why couldn't they use them like everyone else. Cheap to replace and as fast as the Sony proprietary cards.
2. Invest in more first party IP's. Seriously they have so many amazing IP's, use them.
3. PSone and PSP games. Yes, they were there but a very limited selection. Licence Dino Crisis, the Spider-Man games, Ready 2 Rumble, Nightmare Creatures, OddWorld. and where was Metal Gear Acid? They had legendary titles.
4. And finally L2/R2 buttons. Yes, there was a rear touchpad but it was so difficult to use and, for me atleast, hit and miss. If the Switch Lite can have rear buttons on a system similar in form factor the Vita could have too. It would have made PS Remote Play much easier and a bigger selling point.
The PSVita could have been a massive success I believe with these features.
And I was starting to think Sony had forgotten PSNow exists like they did with the PSVita. This thing has so much potential to be a rival to GamePass but they just don't give it a second thought half the time.
They could use it to add PlayStation exclusives across PS3,4 and eventually 5 without natively putting them on Steam and thus PC players would have no choice to subscribe in order to play PlayStation games in turn increasing Sony's monthly income. They could even add some PS1 and 2 classics as an answer to backwards compatibility.
I think the numbers would rise so fast given how people want BC and PC players practically beg for PS exclusives.
I'd rather they disable trophies for this. If I choose not to buy the game for whatever reason I'm stuck with incomplete trophies, my OCD will prevent me from doing it which I wouldn't mind trying Death Stranding out.
I still play my PS3. It was hooked up all through the PS4 generation and is still sat next to my PS5.
I even still buy games for it in second hand shops that still have them. Can you believe I picked up Mercenaries 2 recently for 75p, crazy.
I'd still like to play my games online for the trophies but most of them have shut down. Two recent ones I've tried are, Overlord 2 and Mercenaries 2 of course.
@sanderson72
Yeah, he's said and done a lot of things I don't agree with and for the most part I feel PlayStation is not doing as well under his leadership at present. In addition to what you've said, the upgrade fee fiasco and 'directors cuts' when they could simply release patch for 60fps upgrades is unacceptable. I can afford the games and upgrades but that's not the point.
As for emulation source code, the team behind PCSX2 have been working on emulation for years, why not just compensate them to acquire the work they have done and implement that in the console? Or better yet, hire them officially to work on one for PlayStation.
In any case I'm sure the console source code and bios can be directly acquired from an actual PS2, and there are tonnes of them in second hand shops.
If they really wanted to do it they would find a way, and as you said Jim has done a lot of backtracking so hopefully one day he'll change his mind on BC.
During the last showcase when he said "at PlayStation, we respect our legacy." I simply blurted out "if you did we would have backwards compatibility!"
I know PS3 is pretty much out of the question but the PS5 is powerful enough to emulate and slightly upscale PS1 and PS2 games.
I have a PS2/3/4/5 so sure I can play old games but it would be nice to have it under one hood.
And if compatibility is what you're worried about either maybe have a small team work on and improve an emulator or simply release one and state "compatibility is not 100% guaranteed with every game." You'll have some who will call you names but most would be appreciative for its existence.
This would win Jim a lot of browny points with folk who do not think highly of him at this point in time. I know I would respect him more.
In one final note this is one thing I respect about Xbox, their backwards compatibility may not be full or complete, nor perfect but atleast it's there.
My option isn't there. Waiting for the physical version. Releasing the game digital first is probably to entice impatient people into going digital by default. I'm still not on board with digital and as long as a physical counterpart for any game exists that's what I'll buy.
@Amppari
Again, show me actual written confirmation proof that it's coming to Xbox? You don't know that it is. Find me any game where Phil Spencer stated "Console Exclusive'" that came to anything other than Xbox and PC and this was the exact word used in the teaser.
Yeah, the PlayStation blog said "Launch" and yet they're the only ones that did. Even during an interview with one of the developers he wouldn't say outright that it's coming to Xbox. He just said "It's coming to PS5 and PC.
And now you're getting aggressive by using a word like "dumb"? Just because I'm making an observation based on the wording used and connecting that to past evidence?
Again. I'll only believe it when official confirmation states that it's coming to Xbox. Bacause as it stands, going off everything we know so far it doesn't look like it is. And without proof you can't argue against that.

The R2 trigger became very loose to the point of very high sensitivity at simply resting a finger in it. I assume it was due to the pressure sensitive feature they put into it.
Sony replaced it for free since it was under warranty but it does make me worry about durability. I've disabled the feature for now.
Re: BBC iPlayer Is Now Available on PS5
@themightyant
Well I'm 34 now and used to watch the original run on Saturday mornings on UK GOLD.
Re: BBC iPlayer Is Now Available on PS5
@MightyDemon82
Re: BBC iPlayer Is Now Available on PS5
After (in my opinion) Chris Chibnall destroyed Doctor Who with his ridiculous storyline, terrible writing and cringy acting from Jodie Whittaker, coming from a fan that has watched every episode from the first in 1963, I told the BBC to shove their TV licence where the sun don't shine.
Good for people that still watch the BBC I suppose.
Re: Rockstar Apologises for the State of GTA Trilogy on PS5, PS4
It just sounds like a typical corporate greed situation of "rush it out for Christmas sales, money now, fix later".
I dislike how gaming has become more corporate and greedy. I mean it was always sort of like that but in the 80's and 90's Devs actually gave a damn about game production and fun.
Re: Talking Point: Is Sony Being Stingy with PS5's First-Party Pricing?
@MFTWrecks
I'm a sucker for Pokèmon unfortunately. And Zelda games. Even so, generally the price of Sony first parties are now more expensive than Nintendo's. At launch anyway. Nintendo games never really drop in price by much if at all.
Re: Talking Point: Is Sony Being Stingy with PS5's First-Party Pricing?
@B_Lindz
To be fair Sony's first party games are now more expensive than Nintendo's. I just bought Pokémon Brilliant Diamond at launch for £42 where Sony want £69 for the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West, both physical versions for me.
Generally brand new Nintendo games are in the region of £40-£50 at launch and Sony's first parties are now £65-£70.
Re: Talking Point: Is Sony Being Stingy with PS5's First-Party Pricing?
@auditor01
They haven't increased in a long time in some countries but here in the UK they did. At the start of the PS4 generation they went up from an average of £39.99 during the PS3/X360 generation to £54.99 and then increased again at the start of the PS5 generation to £69.99 each. That's a big jump in just 7-8 years to almost double the price.
Re: Talking Point: Is Sony Being Stingy with PS5's First-Party Pricing?
Re: Tencent Acquires Minority Stake in Yooka-Laylee Dev Playtonic
You would have thought they'd be against selling any of their business since the whole reason they exist is that they are the original RARE team that broke away from Microsoft.
Strange. I hope it doesn't impact their quality. I loved Yooka-Laylee and it felt like taking a step back in time to the 90's playing them.
Edit. Also I don't know a lot about Tencent but I hear a lot of people claim they are bad. Can anyone explain why?
Re: Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 HD Removed from PS Store Today Temporarily
Strange. I looked in my cupboard and they're still there. Even my PS1 copy.
I guess it's true. "The Patriots are trying to control the digital flow of information".
Re: The Original Tomb Raider Celebrates 25th Anniversary
I remember buying the double box edition with a demo disc inside it, (can't remember the demo). A timeless classic. I would love a remaster of the original 5 games from the PSone in a single box. Similar to what Rockstar just did with GTA.
I've been meaning to replay Angel of Darkness. I don't know why it wasn't very well received. I never finished it on PS2. I will revisit at some point.
Re: PS4 Exclusive God of War Releasing on PC in January
Re: Surprise Vampyr Patch Bites Back with Boosted PS5 Performance
Bought this game for less than £20 about 3 years ago and it is definitely underrated. I loaned it to my friends and they all loved it too. I hope we get a sequel some day. I wonder how successful it ended up being?
Re: 'Checkmate, Lawyers' - dbrand Returns with Newly Designed PS5 Faceplates
Re: Video: 5 Ways PS Vita Was Ahead of Its Time
There were a number of things that could have made the PSVita a huge success.
Re: GTA Trilogy Could Be Pretty Pricey on PS5, PS4
Rockstar: "Let's remove the PS2 ports and offer a slightly better version at the current high prices! They will throw money at us for years!"
Me: "No thanks Rockstar, I've still got a working PS2."
Re: Rumour: PS Now Adds The Last of Us 2, Fallout 76, and Final Fantasy VIII
Such wasted potential.
Re: Sony Introduces Game Trials, Try PS5 Games for a Limited Time
I'd rather they disable trophies for this. If I choose not to buy the game for whatever reason I'm stuck with incomplete trophies, my OCD will prevent me from doing it which I wouldn't mind trying Death Stranding out.
Re: Video: Are People Still Playing PS3 Games Online in 2021?
@Jayofmaya
Unfortunately the person that I want to play with lives 300miles away. I moved away a few years ago.
It might work for Overlord 2 though because my brother and I want to go for the trophies.
Re: Video: Are People Still Playing PS3 Games Online in 2021?
I still play my PS3. It was hooked up all through the PS4 generation and is still sat next to my PS5.
I even still buy games for it in second hand shops that still have them. Can you believe I picked up Mercenaries 2 recently for 75p, crazy.
I'd still like to play my games online for the trophies but most of them have shut down. Two recent ones I've tried are, Overlord 2 and Mercenaries 2 of course.
Re: God of War Wins IGN's Big Best Video Game of All Time Poll
To each his own. My personal favourite game is Metal Gear Solid 4.
Re: Jim Ryan to Discuss PlayStation's Past and Gaming's Future in Fireside Chat
@sanderson72
Re: Jim Ryan to Discuss PlayStation's Past and Gaming's Future in Fireside Chat
"Discuss PlayStation's Past?"
Re: Poll: Did You Buy Kena: Bridge of Spirits?
My option isn't there. Waiting for the physical version. Releasing the game digital first is probably to entice impatient people into going digital by default. I'm still not on board with digital and as long as a physical counterpart for any game exists that's what I'll buy.
Re: Tomb Raider, Marvel's Avengers Maker Now Co-Developer on Xbox Exclusive
@Amppari
Good day.
