Yep, it's happening: Sony has announced that official "console covers" for the PlayStation 5 will be available to purchase in 2022. These different coloured covers can be used to customise the look of your system, matching the current, and brand new DualSense colour schemes. And yes, there'll be different kinds of covers depending on the type of PS5 that you own — with a disc drive or without.
Midnight Black and Cosmic Red will be the first to colours to arrive, hitting a large number of territories in January. Nova Pink, Galactic Purple, and Starlight Blue are all due to release in the first half of next year.
Said territories include: USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korean, and the Philippines.
There is a bit of a catch, however, in that these plates aren't cheap. We only have US pricing to go on right now, but you're looking at a recommended retail price of $55. Steep!
Sony stresses that replacing your console's covers is easy. The PS5's outer plates can be removed without any real fuss once you know how to slide them off.

Finally! I still kinda wish they would do options with an integrated stand for your orientation of choice (i.e. protruding feet, flaring out the corners, out just making the back ⅔ of the disk drive side a box shape)

I think the price (assuming that's around £45 UK) is actually alright. I'm happy with the original white but midnight black and any future special edition plates are on my radar.
Missing the Christmas window is a bit poor from Sony in terms of maximising early sales though.

Swanky ad is all well and good but it makes them look like A4 ring binder folders - would prefer to see them actually on a console to get a proper idea. I've actually come to love the PS5 white and black design, so dont think i'll be going down this route (im still too scared to take the covers off to clean it anyway 😂)

If my console were a display piece I'd absolutely go for the purple. Given that I kinda want it to blend in while not in use, I'll be going for the black (it lives in the shade of a shelf). £55 seems pretty cheap for customisation options on a £450 console (I'm sure that's how the price will translate) as I had assumed they'd gouge us for more.
I'd absolutely go for something in antique pine veneer to match the furniture and the floorboards, but I'd guess I'm in the minority here, and will have to take up steam bending if I want it to happen.
Cheaper than I was expecting, and I really like most of them, but I can't see myself bothering. It's under the television now. I'll never see it again until it breaks or the PS6 comes out - whichever happens first.

Not really liking any of these. The black is just boring and the colours garish. I feel the covers need more of an interesting, perhaps two tone, design.

I bought a can of plasti dip spray rubber and a can of satin black spray paint. Gave my Ps5 covers the old 5 coats of plasti dip and then painted satin black over the top. That way I can peel it off at any time 👌
White color is still my numero uno choice. 👍

@theheadofabroom - Why not just buy woodgrain vinyl and wrap it with that? It won't be quite as nice as a veneer, but unless you look closely it can probably be fairly close, and is easy to apply.
You can get about 2m x 50cm for under £10 (I've just lined a bunch of kitchen cupboards hence knowing this random fact!)

I will be buying all 5 console covers, along with the 3 new Dualsense color options. I'll also need 2 more Dualsense charging stands for the new controllers. The Dualsense is my favorite controller of all time, so I NEED every color option that releases lol!
I'm not interested in just a color change. If they offer them for a big new game release like a special one for the eventual Persona 6 and I'd bite.
I really like them and I'm glad to see Sony offering some simple, clean and well chosen colours. The red, light blue and pink all look great to me. BUT - the only problem is that I'm not going to buy a whole bunch of these, so now I'm totally going to be sitting on the fence to see what other designs are released in the future.
Personally, I'm hoping for some PS1-themed plates and controllers like they did with that special edition PS4. Either that or a 'smoked' transparent plastic in various colours could be pretty cool.

@SplinterHell Vinyl wrap looks ok until you put it next to a lot of real wood, and then it sticks out like a sore thumb. That and I know the limits of my ability to get edges to meet well. Polycarbonate looks better in that setting if you can't get proper wood, because at least it's honest about what it's made of. Brushed chrome would go well too.
Obviously all of this is my taste and opinion, and anyone is free to feel differently.
Anyway i know there's this vanguard of Sony defenders that hate any criticism whatsoever but I'm just saying you give me some Peach Momoko TLoU plates (or something unique like that) and I'll pay whatever Sony wants.

Overall these aren't really any more expensive than the dbrand covers. I don't know why there are so many babies crying about the pricing in here.

@Medic_Alert some people just like to pay a little bit extra, to get the best quality products. There's no need to save a few bucks to buy some flimsy third party crappy cover off of eBay.
I know the game bombed but I did like the yellow cyberpunk 2077 aesthetic. Could also imagine taking purple and adding green vinyl stripes for a subtle neon genesis Evangelion look.
The black one with the PS2 blue logo and etching on it would have been nice for its 20th anniversary. And use the original colours for the PS symbol on the top left.

I got third party black plates last January for half the price of these and honestly can’t see any difference between the pair. I’ll give these official ones a miss I think.

The Midnight Black is far more inconspicuous than the attention grabbing white for burglars peering in through windows. Is it worth the asking price though? The cynic in me is thinking this was the plan all along and is just a way to recoup some of the losses on the console sale.
Wonder if this means a black PS5 with a black bundled controller is on the horizon? Still looks somewhat like an ugly Vorlon though...

@Medic_Alert depends where you are I guess. I paid £43 including shipping for the Dark Plates when they were first announced before. They’re a nice quality with their own little take on the Sony shapes imprinted. Sure you can get cheaper but sometimes it nice to pay for just that little extra.

Sony is just having a laugh with pricing this gen, it’s just whale hunting at this point. By all means, do what makes you happy, but this is so silly.
No wonder they were so aggressive to third party options being available if they were looking to charge $55 for a couple of 'coloured' plastic covers that probably cost less than few $'s to make (not inc packaging, distribution etc). If they cost near $55 on a PS5 build, I'd hate to know how much the Console would cost. That is ridiculous...
I guess I will end up buying a Spray paint can and spraying them myself to get rid of the 'hideous' white, maybe go Black as that will slim it down and make it less ugly on the shelf. Its a MESS of a design - especially if you have it horizontally to fit in the shelf - the worst 'stand' in history!

Like what I would like for the Dualsense I wanted a Dark Blue plate or even a cool Trans dark blue one or any see-through one would look AMAZING Oh well. Might get the black one but saying that I like my stuff to stay with the original look really so might not bother doing anything erm as always
I hope this opens up the possibility of game collector's editions coming with special face plates. Gone are the days when you needed to buy a new console to get the fancy design, now they can just toss in a couple of face plates in the box.

'Ol DBrand gonna have to go back to selling cellphone covers. They charge around $70 for anyone complaining about Sony's pricing. Got away with it because they were the only "premium" option, with resellers throwing them on eBay for over 100.

I'm about 50/50 right now on whether I'll buy one or not. It''d be Midnight Black for sure as that's the color I wanted the PS5 to be in the first place, but I'd have to see if I think it's worth it or not. I'm actually ok with the price, but I'll only get it if I think the PS5 will be my main console over my Series X when they release next year.
That Cosmic Red one is interesting too, but I'm not buying a third controller for it. I already own the Midnight Black controller, so that'll work.

@ Nexozi no i do not want an XBOX. I want a PS5 that is smaller, already black, and has a web browser. The current XBOX checks those boxes and does so at the same price as a PS5.
As for a web browser on a console. Why not? For a lot of basic info on sports, weather, news, game info, and google searches my PS4 browser is easy and convenient. I am using my PS4 browser now while a game i am playing is paused.
Sorry Sony but your a little late to the party and $55 smackers for an official plastic cover is ridiculous! Very happy with my $28 on sale back cover from Amazon.

@NoCode23 I’m sure it’s Sonys idea to offer custom bundles over their own store like Microsoft did this in the past with controllers over their design studio. The pandemic might hold Sony back to offer the console in this way currently but I guess it will come some time in the future. Console + plates in your preferred colour + controller in the matching or preferred colour.
I’m still very happy with the white console. The colour fits perfectly to my loudspeakers
But also happy with the black controller.
I might buy new plates when there are special designs available.
@Royalblues Yep. I had a few 3ds and xls/nxls. Started with black, never had the aqua unfortunately, but that purple became my favorite. The nxl was better, but the purple just felt right! That color wasn't sold long, either. Still have it...I don't really use it anymore, but it's still here!
I am a big fan of the red and black covers...but will happily stick to my default white cover for awhile.

They brought the "law hammer" upon any other firm that would make custom plates and made such a big deal out of it, only for them to release 5 versions of bland looking plates, and at a steep price.
For the money they could at least make some custom plates using their own franchises... God of War, Bloodborne, Horizon, TLOU, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank etc... so many games and plate ideas they could have used, and they went with a boring design... Those are worth at the most 30-35$.
Anyway, i'll keep my PS5 as it is, because...
It sits hidden on the LG CX's support, which extends quite a lot behind it.
And since PS5 is very silent while gaming, you don't even know it's there.
A few firmware updates ago LG and Sony introduced support for the 2 devices, so one can control the PS5 interface with the LG Magic Remote. Also, one can start the PS5 using the TV, change automatically to the PS5's HDMI interface when the console opens etc (those last 2 were already available since the beginning of 2021).
My point is that for me, being as if it's integrated in the TV, is the best cover PS5 can have.

@Rural-Bandit For me, SNES held the "favorite console of all time" slot for a long time, and I thought it would be forever, but 3DS managed to supplant it, actually. That was just an amazing little dynamo that did everything SNES did right and then some, and was pocketable to boot. Even SNES nostalgia couldn't top the 3DS. I thought Switch would top 3DS with how it launched, but it slowed down quite a bit, and some of the divisive games like ACNH have managed (so far) to keep 3DS above it for me. There's a certain charm 3DS had that Switch doesn't quite replace. Although I'm one of the people that left 3D on max from launch to the end!

Where is the promised VRR support Sony? Maybe work on that rather than more pointless plastic entering the world.
@Rural-Bandit For now I think my order is #1 3DS, #2 SNES, #3 was Switch through 2019, but with it trailing off, it might be supplanted by XSX over the course of the generation, which has a crack at shooting up to #1 if it keeps doing things right and Nintendo keeps getting things wrong. PS5 has a shot at moving up the ladder, too, depending on what services they start offering later on with the rumored "game pass competitor" It's a great starting point but still feels kind of "just the minimum." A generation can change a lot over 7+ years.
Good pick with the PS1. I never had a physical PS1 but I had a decent PS1 physical library that I emulated on PC, and I have to agree, PS1 was probably the most special of the PS's. PS2 was the most popular and it has some truly classic games (Dark Cloud, etc), but I don't think it lives up to the magic of the PS1. Vita is probably my second favorite PS. Poor thing.... I have hope the PS5 will seem more special on the way out than on the way in though. It depends on how scummy the business practices remain and how much they nickel and dime everyone. I feel like a reckoning will come sooner than later where MS's high value offering and the availability of Series S will balance the install bases of the platforms more so that Sony will finally have to react with some value offerings of their own, and then the real competition starts.

I think I've actually kind of settled on the white for now. It's an eyesore, but it's iconic, and it's kind of become PS's color scheme starting with PSVR and Astrobot. I probably wouldn't have picked it at the start, but I like it now. My WiiU was black, and Wii is just different so 360 was really my last white console. Though, I now also have a white SWOLED, so maybe it's too much sameyness. Maybe I need purple joycon now

@Rural-Bandit i used my ps4 web browser to watch movies on movie sites , and being able to lay from bed and browse on a big screen was so good . better than holding and watching through a phone screen at night , especially when i drift off to sleep lol
@NoCode23 @nomither6 For me I find it's far quicker and easier to browse sites and get sports updates just using a mobile. I don't go to sleep with the console or TV on. Also don't use websites to watch films. Just use the Netflix, Disney or blu-rays. But my point was more about not buying a games console because it doesn't have a Web browser. 🤯 I also used the CD player on the PS1. 😂
@Nexozi the movie sites i use are better because they have every movie & even new films that just came out ; and i use other streaming sites to watch NFL and other sporting events , so it was really convenient for me . and imo , just browsing the net on a big screen tv is satisfying as well .
and i wouldn’t be surprised if people did buy a console for whatever feature that isn’t gaming . remember , people bought ps2’s in droves because it was a dvd player . everybody has their preferences .

Yeah, I personally liked the PS3 era of Sony games more than the PS4's for the most part, despite the popularity of the latter. The first year was empty, the next 2 years had some good stuff (SoTC remake, TLG finally releasing, etc) and then a lot of the other stuff just wasn't that interesting. I do love GoT, but Sucker Punch has always been my favorite Sony studio, so that's no surprise. Sly and Infamous were easily my favorites in prior gens, and highly addictive. Horizon is pretty cool too. It has issues, and it's not necessarily my top pick game (I continuously back-burner it in favor of other things), but I think those two franchises (Plus R&C but I doubt we'll see another for a while) are my current "most appealing" PS series. I like GoW but I actually found myself getting bored around the second visit to the lake...there's too little variety in it (Ragnarok may fix that, but it's a flaw in the first nobody talks about.)
I only hope that someone fixes the giant Japan shaped hole in gaming that's starting to feel like PS360 again. Sony's kind of flipped Japan off. Xbox never had Japan....and Nintendo is too limited in hardware so even Falcom games run terribly. I'm missing that barrage of Japanese flare. It's not as dire as PS360, it's there....Scarlet Nexus, the Falcom games, Arise, but it's kind of scattered. Even PS4X1 era seemed like Japan was more focused, partly because PS4 still showcased it for the first half of its life....before Kaz left.
@Medic_Alert the new dbrand ones that are coming out completely change the look of the console, and possibly improve the airflow. I will watch analysis videos on the airflow for that however before I purchase.
I don't love the design of the PS5 but these may change my mind on waiting for a slim model.
