Given the complexity, as well as talk of increased bugs further into the game, they'll probably be patching this for some time. Like the Divinity games, I really hope this culminates in a physical 'Definitive/Enhanced' edition in a year's time 😀
@Breity247 the digital foundry report you're thinking of was about a 3 line code that just fixed frame pacing (rather than frame rate) but did indeed increase input lag. Seems likely that they accepted poor frame pacing (the main reason for visual stuttering) to keep input lag as low as possible. Shame there has to be any sort of compromise in the first place. https://www.eurogamer.net/digitalfoundry-2022-from-software-30fps-frame-pacing-fixed-by-hackers
Bought and finished QUBE2 this week after its first sale in years. Highly recommend it, one of my favourite puzzle games on PlayStation alongside Talos Principle and Witness. So odd this is getting an upgrade though as I've not heard anyone mention it since it was first reviewed. Figured it didn't sell well enough for an upgrade to be worth the effort.
Great to see they are supporting the game so prolifically. Thoroughly enjoying my playthrough so far but there are a surprising number of visual glitches on PS5 I don't see mentioned in notes - regular pop-in of foliage, npcs, environmental textures and lighting effects close to the player which does detract from the experience a little bit. Clearly some streaming issues which is odd given this is what the SSD was meant to address.
The interview after the event dropped some interesting tidbits. 1) Thor and Odin both feature. Looking forward to seeing their interpretation. 2) This "caps off the norse story". Sounds like this will be even more story driven and not just setting up narrative threads. 3) Odin is played by Richard Schiff. Nuff said!
I got really excited to play this in the lead up to its release. Then they pulled the ps4 version suggested in the earlier trailers and we've heard nothing from them for over a year. With no new information on a PS4 release until now, hype levels have already died down and I've moved on. I can't be the only one who feels this way with so much else to play. Timed exclusivity can be a risky game.
This game was my favourite of last year. Was such an engrossing mystery to uncover with some amazing moments and a really satisfying ending. By fitting into the overall narrative I'm curious how impactful this expansion can be given how well rounded off the main story was.
This is a little confusing but it appears that they've just released the first game on PS4 today with the follow up (A Fumble in the Dark) to be released on 15th April. Might consider both if they can bundle them together. Looks like a more comical version of The Last Door so I'm certainly interested.
Star Renegades is out soon on PS4. Also waiting for the Hades port announcement. Theres no reason that should remain a Switch console exclusive given Supergiants past releases.
Have been looking forward to this since it was announced to be coming to console. Here's hoping the ps4 port is up to scratch. The game doesn't look too demanding but I'm increasingly wary of newer releases on the aging hardware of a base ps4, particularly given the greater focus on next gen specs.
@Robocod Celeste has not been on sale for over two years despite regularly going on sale on other platforms. QUBE2 hasnt budged in 2 years. Owlboy and The Sojourn haven't been on sale for a year. I think its part of a larger problem with Sony and indie devs at the moment. This is a great way to get noticed in the clutter of PSN, and it was reported last week that even a name as big as Lucas Pope couldn't get Return of the Obra Dinn (discounted once since its release a year ago) onto a recent sale. This irritates me not just because I want the games as cheap as everywhere else, but because it will push more and more devs away from PlayStation and onto the Switch where so many indie games are now releasing exclusively of PS (Ape Out, In Other Waters, Steamworld Quest, Katana Zero, Ori 1&2, Carrion, Axiom Verge 2, Disc Room, Baba is You)
Thanks for the review. Is there a first person mode in the game? I know they added it post-release on PC but was wondering if it made it over in the port. I really prefer driving with a cockpit view in this sort of environment.
Totally agree. In recent years, my favourite games on PS4 have been from indie developers. Celeste, Return of the Obra Dinn, The Messenger, The Sexy Brutale, The Witness and Outer Wilds are all examples of original design ideas and tight gameplay you just don’t see in the AAA space.
I don’t own a Switch so it’s become incredibly frustrating to hear about so many indie titles being announced for Switch and PC only.Just this month, ‘In Other Waters’ was released on PC/Switch only. This looks like a wholly unique game that I’d love to try. Right now the PS4 hanging on with many of these eventually making their way over eventually, but some of these games never do (still waiting for SteamWorld Quest and Katana Zero).
Axiom Verge 2 really takes the cake. Not even announced on PS4 despite the first game launching on it exclusively. Im fairly confident this will come over to PS4 eventually but it’s a shame that PlayStation is (like you say) an after thought.
However, I am feeling slightly better with Shuhei Yoshida now focused on indie developer collaborations. Hopefully this will keep indie games on PlayStation and also not after long timed exclusivity periods.
A very sensible update as the Impossible Lair was a huge step up in difficulty. I personally enjoyed the challenge but could easily see why others would be put off. It does slightly reduce the incentive to rescue every bee but this does make the game more accessible overall. The alternative music is an unusual choice however as the original soundtrack is wonderful just as it is. I’m not sure that chiptunes would work but I’ll certainly give them a shot.
This was a surprisingly good game that I’d highly recommend, especially as it’s pretty cheap to pick up now.
@Octane I suppose I'm looking at it more in practical terms. I see this as a console upgrade to replace my PS4 but if it can't run all of my games, then I'm still stuck with my original console. I'll still buy it to play PS5 games of course, but I find it surprising they can't guarantee 100% compatibility given the market has been pushing towards incremental upgrades rather than isolated console generations (e.g. PS4 Pro) for a few years now.
Looking forward to this! Really curious to see how this runs on a base PS4. I remember playing Theme Hospital on my very old PC back in the day, and the later/busier hospitals became unplayable. Have you guys by any chance tested on a base PS4?
Taking out content that is ALREADY developed and selling it on top of the game is the only kind of DLC I fundamentally disagree with. Keeping the game relevant with any paid DLC (small or big, doesn't matter) AFTER the game releases is totally reasonable and probably necessary these days given the increased costs of game development. But asking for extra cash for content at this point just comes off as greedy.
Monster Boy And The Cursed Kingdom has now dropped to half price (£16). It had barely budged since its release a year ago and is now at a reasonable price to take a punt.
@Loki7T1 This is a problem for most review sites now who only consider the PS4 Pro despite the majority of players on base PS4. It would like to see the whole user base considered by at least comparing the performance/visuals of the two versions. As it stands, we rely on Digital Foundry which certainly can't cover all games.
Nice to hear them confirm this. It’s clear that the target for most games now is PS4 Pro. The vast majority of marketing and reviews are now based on PS4 Pro performance so it makes sense. However this also allows a poorly optimised base version to be released without much complaint which is less incentive for a studio to make that extra effort.
Great review. How is the performance on a base PS4? I know you guys tend to review on a Pro but do you make a point to test the base versions as well? I find many sites don’t bother with this despite the much larger user base.
Pillars of Eternity 2 on PS4 has fallen off many people’s radar after Microsoft acquired Obsidian last year. It has since been reconfirmed however and I am really looking forward to it after loving the first one. Here’s hoping it’s a decent port.

Talos Principle 2 is half price - in the UK at least. Hopefully a US price drop will follow soon

Really hope we get the first one as well. Been hungry for this style of game since Return of the Obra Dinn and not seen anything like it on PS.

Re: The Witcher 3 Patch in 'Final Stages', Should Release Soon
Hoping they fix the annoying stutter after every autosave or quest update. Performance mode runs brilliantly otherwise.
