Over the past six months or so, the base PlayStation 4 that released all the way back in late 2013 has been running into a number of issues when trying to run recently released games. Many studios seem to be using Sony's supercharged PS4 Pro as its target platform, but that's not the case with The Last of Us: Part II.
Speaking with USgamer, lead game designer Emilia Schatz said that the base PS4 is Naughty Dog's target platform. "That's actually what I've got on my desk at work, and so that's what we sort of aim for." Schatz then goes on to state that the footage we saw earlier this week isn't the game's final frame rate nor its locked screen resolution.
This is surely welcome news for those who haven't upgraded to the PS4 Pro yet. The likes of Control and Borderlands 3 are two games that have been considered almost unplayable on the base PS4 model, particularly in the case of Remedy's latest mysterious adventure. It doesn't look like The Last of Us: Part II will be adding itself to that list.
Are you a base PS4 owner and happy with this news? Tell us why you haven't upgraded in the comments below.

To answer the question that the tagline poses, yes, I think TLOU2 will make our PS4s sound like jet engines. Fully expecting to have to bolt mine to the floor so that it doesn't fly around the room.
I hope it’s like god of war which had the option to choose either performance of resolutions mode on ps4 pro, I’m okay with 40-50 fps rather than just 30 fps.
I can’t even browse the trophy list without mine sounding like a high tech wind tunnel. So I guess I’ll need bigger wires to isolate my PS4 to another floor when this game comes out.
Since the game is going to cause everyone's PS4 to fly into orbit, I guess the game is going to be
Out of this world.
RDR2 and God of War were one polygon away from having my base PS4 fly itself out my window. Thank god I'm going to be playing TLoU2 on Pro.
To infinity and beyond!
@ShogunRok Would this game have enhanced on PS4 Pro ??
@Playstation5 Definitely, it's bound to have optional settings on Pro since it's first party.
Not sure why, but DQ11 has made my pro sound like it’s taking off as well 😮
Control and Borderlands are third party games so they will never rin as good as first party. Jas nothing to do with the Pro. I remember playing plenty of third party games on the original PS4 before the Pro released that were having issues.
@ShogunRok @Playstation5 I mean, they've been showing the PS4 Pro version, right? It's good that they're targeting the vanilla system, but clearly it'll be best on Pro.
Upgrade haha never.......my upgrade from a Playstation 4 will be a Playstation 5 . no gimmicks or inbetween I like Emilia Schatz are very happy with the vanilla system.
The Question is will Playstation 5 have 4k or 8k or will we have a Playstation Pro 5 with 8k or even 16k.
@wiiware To be honest, I'd also like to have the option to prioritise frame rate on the standard PS4.
Launch day model. Works like a champ. Id only get a Pro this late if the base model died on me. No way a 1st party studio doesnt use the majority platform for benchmarking. Even 3rd party (remedy for example) i dont understand developing your game with the smallest install base as the targeted platform. All these bright minds making really stupid decisioms imo.
@Number09 next geen needs to be 4k 60fps no compromises. Hitting 1080p 60fps was almost non existent THIS gen until the upgraded systems came out
Pro for me. Although it has always sounded ridiculously loud. Especially when I'm playing Dreams. I'm actually scared to play that for fear of bricking my PS4.
@ThroughTheIris56 I don’t think ps4 has the power to spare for any frame rate improvement, tlou 2 graphics looks really really good. It’s great if the original ps4 has that option though.
@Nyne11Tyme "All these bright minds making really stupid decisioms imo" spot on.
I wouldve bought a pro a while ago but the reports of the super noisy fan are holding me back..
@wiiware I would have thought there would be an option to decrease the resolution and be able to use the extra power available to boost the framerate, or something like that.
I dunno I'm obviously not an expert.
The Last of Us Remastered makes my base PS4 sound like it's going to take off, compared to most games. That and God of War. It really is worth opening up for the odd clean. Mine was done by a third party actually as at the time I had controller connection issues.
Nice to hear them confirm this. It’s clear that the target for most games now is PS4 Pro. The vast majority of marketing and reviews are now based on PS4 Pro performance so it makes sense. However this also allows a poorly optimised base version to be released without much complaint which is less incentive for a studio to make that extra effort.
I just hope they are commenting that just to assure everyone it will run ok, but they are making the game with Pro and PS5 in their mind for the whole time. All of the assets ready for all three systems so it won't be only ”bigger resolution and higher framerate” on the PS5. This could be a good selling point for the PS5 as well. Along with the launch titles, they could promote their latest games with ”super-enhanced for the PS5” label.
My Pro can be a bit loud on occasion but I do wonder the condition some let their systems get, if people put it under the tv boxed in then yeah it'll probably will cos it's not getting any air.
@get2sammyb yep i saw it said captured on PS4 Pro at end of trailer
@get2sammyb base/slim ps4 probably dip little bit on framerate while playing the last of us part 2 but i hope The last of us part 2 still have steady rocky solid 30 fps in whole game to complete story
It’s just a noisy fan problem has no real indication of how hard your PlayStation is actually working whether you own the pro or not the ps5 is said to have take care of the problem but if you want to fix the problem get a stand with a cooling fan works great it will get noisy for just a minute when 𝙁𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 firing up games
Makes sense to target it for the PS4 Slim, then when the PS5 launches and they promote TLoU2 4k Remastered they can talk about all of the improvements the game has running on the PS5 over the PS4 Slim.
If they were targeting for the Pro then they wouldn't have as much to show off in the way of improvements, just checkerboard 4k vs. actual 4k.
Bookmark this article for how they ware targeting the PS4 Slim but they were really making the game "with the PS5 in mind".
Ugh, seriously if this game blows up my Pro I'm gonna be majorly disappointed. I still haven't finished God of War because of it.
I wanna open mine up to clean it but I reckon I'll catch the Cordyceps virus from the all the muck inside.
Well, duh. The Pro and the X were machines made for the gullible. Every single game is made for the base model, quite obviously, to ensure the majority of owners can play the game without issue. I honestly figured this was common sense and didn't need to be said to anyone other than the Xbox crowd.
My ps4, i think its the second version, it's all matte. it is very silent. I read horror stories about planes taking off...i'm just amazed how silent it is.
Many peoples PS4s that are running very loud and hot could likely reduce the noise and heat dramatically by cleaning out the inside from dust and replacing the factory thermal paste for the CPU heat sink with a high quality paste.
I opened my PS4 up last year and it had a ton of dust inside. I replaced the factory thermal paste on the heat sink with some high quality Arctic Silver thermal paste and it has been running smooth and noticeable more quiet since.
Trust me, if your PS4 is years old, that factory thermal paste dries out and becomes less effective at heat dissipation.
Hmm, maybe I'll just play indie games to stop ps4 flying out the window.
I'm rocking an original white boy, and most games run fine, Spider-Man, Uncharted 4, God Of War, all fine. Horizon Zero Dawn made it a bit hot, but it ran perfectly. DOOM however nearly made it combust and melt through my entertainment center. Don't know what it was about it, but it used to prepare for take off whenever I played it.
I swear some of yall must not look after your playstations like that fella who had his infested with roaches, straight filthy.
Click click click click....every PS4 game is designed to run on the base model PS4.
I haven't upgraded from my base ps4 as it was a present from my dad. It still runs perfectly so why would I upgrade?
before i read this article i was thinking what the problem with this Jet engine in my room and all the games mentioned in the comments are really make me afraid the my PS4 PS4 gonna explode.
this year almost every game have performance issues except capcom games DMC5 and RE2. and thats make their RE Engine is brilliant.
Days gone, control, borderlands 3, ..etc all of them launch with issues
I disagree that many developers have targetted the Pro - its that games haven't stood still or been limited by base consoles. That is different. Sony Devs though can manipulate their game to hit certain parameters on base consoles where as multi-platform Devs build their game and then try to get it running as it is on the older hardware.
What I mean by that is that if an area is to complex or has problems running at say 1080p/30fps, they can change that area in the game. If its the view, the amount of objects in the distance affecting performance, a Sony developer can change the amount of objects, can even put some object like a wall for example so the load on the GPU is reduced. In a multi-platform game, that 'view' cannot be blocked off because that would change the game from other versions. It makes more sense to reduce the resolution - either dynamically for that specific area or permanently so that the versions remain the same.
Its the fact that all versions - inc those on Base XB1 - have the same geometry, views etc that means all these games run differently because of the different hardware. Its not like they change the game to run on XB1 with its weaker GPU, they reduce the resolution to run the game.
Its no different from games like Uncharted 4/Lost Legacy, Horizon: Zero Dawn, God of War etc. If areas struggle to run at a full HD, they can change that particular area in the game to reduce the load on the GPU to hit their target. As the game only releases on Playstation, it enables the devs to adapt the game to the hardware rather than try and get the game as is to run at acceptable levels. You can change the game at its core design to reduce GPU load rather than change the resolution for example to reduce the load.
Its the same principal with Xbox Exclusives too - games like Gears 5 and Forza Horizon run at 1080/30 and Forza Motorsport runs at 1080/60 but as we know, multi-platform games struggle to hit full HD. Even games that perhaps don't look as impressive, or at least on a par with these. Its because Xbox devs can change things in the game to reduce the Load on the system where as multi-platform devs make the game and then try to get it running. They can't go changing the game too much otherwise its not quite the same game.
That's the advantage for developers who make a game for a single platform and why single platform games tend to run better even if the look as good or better than anything out there.
I had a base model which often got very loud. I upgraded to a Pro and sold the original locally. A couple of days later the buyer asked to return it because he thought the noise meant it was faulty. I agreed and decided to take it apart (obviously invalidating the warranty). Inside was, as anticipated, a large amount of dust. After a good clean it ran quietly. Perhaps a lot of original models become noisy for this reason.
Nintendo is for me still the champion of quiet consoles. Wii u is the most underrated console to date...certainly from a technical point of view (but the sheer amount of -compatible wii and retro- games is the other reason).
@YozenFroghurt me too, I've never ever heard the fan on my mine and I don't live in an igloo.
If there is only one thing I would want from a next-gen console is that the Fan doesn't get loud :-/ I HATE that in some games this Gen and it is very annoying really.
Changing from PS4 to ps4pro is not called an upgrade as we are not expanding the capabilities of the system..lol
It's a whole new system..
Rockin the base PS4 I got in 2016 I don't do inbetween upgrades sorry. Will be rocking it until PS5 comes out. I'm old school like that and have done this since PS1.
To answer that last question, no I'm not happy they're targeting the base PS4. That console is incredibly out of date, and the PS5 is coming out in a few months. Really, though, I'd just rather Naughty Dog was not PS exclusive. That is the main reason I bought a PS4 Pro, but the whole gaming experience is much better on my Xbox One X. The game would certainly run better on that. Though, there is a good chance I switch to PC next (not for a few years).
@Rugga Things have changed since PS1. Consoles are already at a hardware disadvantage compared to PC, and they cannot make zero upgrades for 8+ years of a console generation. I'm not saying it's worth upgrading mid-gen if you got the base model, but if you come in later, as you did, why wouldn't you get the newer console?
