Re: Sony's PS5 Shipments Now Total 41.7 Million

Cikajovazmaj

@KaijuKaiser you are assuming PS6 (and that whole gen) will be backward compatible, which was historically never a given. I do believe this time around though, Sony would push that card way harder than MS (basically not sure what worth BC Redfall would bring ).

Re: Sony's PS5 Shipments Now Total 41.7 Million

I feel like Sony's play here, and the current sale back this up, is to aggressively increase the install base so that they minimize the impact MS can make through their Activision Blizzard merger.
If Sony gets people to jump on board till the end of the year, ain't nobody switching to a Series console THIS generation. What Sony's plan for PS6 and onward is, I'm not sure (might not be a factor at all, given changes in user habits that might occur in next 4-5 years).

Re: Told You So! Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Really Wouldn't Have Worked on PS4

@Wheatly well, in Insomniac defense, they said they needed PS5 super fast SSD as that was the only SSD in the platform they were targeting. It would be weird for them to say it needed a PCI Gen 3 NVMe drive to run, and then publish a game on PS5 using different hardware options...

As for optimizations, I feel like they could make the game run on a larger spectrum of configurations, but probably by changing/tweaking the mechanics. It becomes a question of how much you are willing to compromise the experience, which I am glad they did not. Requirements and performance on Ricks machine seem perfectly reasonable to me, and I would actually call it well-optimised for what it delivers. Games for few years now are almost completely unplayable on such hardware, and R&C was perfectly serviceable.

Re: Almost 500 PS5, PS4 DLC Packs Discounted on PS Store

Cikajovazmaj

There are 2 types of DLC, and one I hate while the other I'm fine with.
I really despise when DLC is content artificially blocked from user on day one, pre-developed and scheduled for later release and additional profit. For example, Capcom shipping content on disk and unlocking it for extra fee in few weeks.
DLC that I almost always support is post launch developed extra campaigns and similar larger chunks of content. Those refresh the experience for me and there is a feeling they actually invested additional time and effort in creating them.

Re: "We've Lost the Console Wars," Says Trillion Dollar Underdog Xbox

Cikajovazmaj

@BeerIsAwesome to be honest, amount of money MS has burned through 4 generations to stay 3rd i gaming market has never been made public. But it is surely bigger than Ouya or Stadia investments.
In that sense, they indeed lost the war. But it is exclusively their own fault (hindsight is always 20/20, but you can precisely point to moment when they messed up each of the generations, sometimes even during announcement).

Re: Multiple PS Studios Working on Mobile, As Sony Targets Smartphone Boom

Cikajovazmaj

Not sure how some people see this development as either desperation or weakness. It is Sony literally smelling blood (XSX has failed in console market, as generation is almost at half of it's lifetime and it sold 1/3 of PS5) and deciding to expand on all additional fronts where MS is still competitive.
Personally I don't care much about mobile or cloud at this point in time, but kudos to them. Companies are supposed to grow and diverse investments.

Re: PS5 Sales Increase An Outrageous 369% in Key European Countries

Cikajovazmaj

Good news for Sony I guess, but I did hope there was going to be some competition this generation. MS shot themselves through both feet with zero current-gen games and downward spiraling quality of first party releases, and results seem to speak more than words ever could.
There is a chance new Nintendo system might make it more interesting and keep competition going, but I don't see them as same market (I would always own both those consoles, as they provide different experiences)

Re: 17 New PS Plus Extra, Premium Games Revealed in Another Huge Update

Cikajovazmaj

Awesome list. I'm not sure this pace can be maintained, but I'll enjoy it for as long as it lasts. About 70% of PS Plus Extra additions are games I would purchase in a future sale, or have purchased physical versions previously and sold after completion. Adding them allows me to revisit these titles down the line.
Year 2, instead of day 1 model has really been working for me (and I hope Sony).

Re: God of War Ragnarok Cleans Up at DICE Awards, Elden Ring Takes Game of the Year

Cikajovazmaj

@Starkei which would be fine and align better with 90% of people thinking GOTY is a game that does not win in traditional categories (that have nothing to do with the game part of videogame).
FYI, GOWR wouldn't be my GOTY. And most appealing part of that game is the handling of leviathan axe (having to manually retrieve it and manage where it is on the battleground), and similar immersive touches. GOTY almost always for me is something from Nintendo camp (except years that don't have their contender).

Re: God of War Ragnarok Cleans Up at DICE Awards, Elden Ring Takes Game of the Year

Cikajovazmaj

@Starkei I ain't denying ER potentially being a GOTY. It's just that with traditional categories we measure games with, it is not best in almost any of them.
Furthermore, it is not my GOTY, but that is beyond the point. I feel it has generated enough buzz that it proves I'm the odd one out.

Instead of measuring games similar to what we do with movies (which evolved from what we did with books and music), I would propose categories to be more inline with mechanics in videogames medium: best risk and reward system, most immersive experience, biggest innovation in gameplay loop, etc..

I feel like this would communicate properly why an indie game actually can be a GOTY contender, as it has innovated and excelled at fields that matter, not animation design budget.

Re: God of War Ragnarok Cleans Up at DICE Awards, Elden Ring Takes Game of the Year

Cikajovazmaj

I don't want to sound like a sore loser, as I'm not, and I feel all these games have their qualities.. but I just don't get all the awards for Elden Ring.
It has yet to win most individual categories awards on any event (almost always beat by GOWR), and ones it does win actually don't make sense given the true strengths of the game (Technical Achievements, Game design, Game direction).
Categories might not be ready to properly communicate what makes the game "good", but as it stands now, it's a bit odd. I would probably feel better about it if it only won GOTY, with no individual awards. That I could explain by rating system being too fresh and unpolished.
