I was holding out for a PS5, but after reading this I’m gonna just save my money. I only really wanted to try Demon’s Souls, anyway. I can live without one more game.
@TowaHerschel7 How are you doing that? When I owned a Wii, the store would never load after the shutdown, so I could not download anything I had previously purchased. I no longer own the darned thing, thanks to emulation, but I am still curious.
@AhmadSumadi That's understandable, some people like to keep things fresh! There's no shame in wanting to move forward to the next thing.
Emulation is amazing right now, and it's only going to get better. It's pretty much the only way to preserve anything of worth that is found on consoles. While I still have a few of my legacy systems, I know eventually they will cease to function so it's nice having it backed up on a nice gaming rig.
@TJF588 You make a great point, especially for the developer standpoint. You reminded me of one of my martial arts students. At the time, he happened to be the president of Insomniac games. He worked on the Ratchet & Clank series, and Resistance: Fall of Man and was very, very proud of his work.
Sadly, he had to step down from game development, because their investors put their company through one of the most brutal crunch times I've ever heard of. Almost all the employees were living in the office for weeks at a time. They had basic amenities and such, but spending so much time away from their families was taxing on their mental and physical health, and my student developed chronic health problems as a result of the investors wanting their team to crunch.
My point is that this story is the tale of many, and so many developers have gone through hard work and insane crunch and it is going out the window because Sony only cares about their bottom line.
@AhmadSumadi You're not a party pooper, it's a valid question. Part of the reason I always desire backwards compatibility is because when you have been playing for a long time, you start to end up with too many systems because of all the stupid exclusives. It would be nice if there was a way to consolidate them.
I no longer do this because it just got out of hand, so I took consolidation into my own hands through emulation. But as an example, I used to own a Sega Saturn JUST to be able to play Virtual On and Layer Section. That's a huge piece of plastic just for two games. I had a PSOne just for Symphony of the Night. I have an NES, SNES, and N64 (those are staying no matter what.) So all of those things start to take up a lot of space. Luckily, emulation of the Saturn has gotten insanely good, so consolidating my library has never been easier.
While I can't speak for others, I'll say that it just has to do with minimizing the number of consoles we all have laying around. And don't get me started on the games preservation topic, which I feel strongly about!
@TheFrenchiestFry Yep, and for a popular system like the PS3, which is still commanding high prices for used consoles, those are likely to shoot up on places like eBay. When Nintendo discontinued support for the 3DS recently, I sold my 2DS for nearly $200. And when I bought the thing, it cost me $75. So, you're right. If you care about these systems, don't wait until the stores close!
Also, if you really love these consoles and don't have one for whatever reason, don't wait until the store closures because I'm 99% certain that the prices will skyrocket as an excuse. Early bird gets the worm, or something.
@NEStalgia I'm not fully on board with digital for the reasons you stated. When Nintendo started to do it's extremely hard push against emulation sites last year, I made backups of literally any piece of media I have. Foolish of me for waiting this long; it took the better part of the year. But, now that the job is done, everything is backed up, and I duplicated the backup on 4 hard drives and I'm minimizing my spending when it comes to digital purchases on Sony's or Nintendo's eShops. I don't mind buying on Steam or GoG, because GoG gives me full control of what I can do with the software, and Steam has some interesting workarounds, if you know where to look.
To anyone reading that's interested, SSDs are cheaper than ever, and have a very long shelf life for the standard user of over 10 years. I recommend that now is the time to seriously look at how you are spending money on digital store fronts that turn to smoke, and make solid backups of anything that you really, really will miss when the stores close.
I just got a PS3 again so I can download and backup any purchases I made, just in case. I sold it years ago and I’ve been putting things off. Got a shiny SSD waiting for it, can’t wait. Thanks for the heads up about this, otherwise I wouldn’t have known!
@Eadgar @Shred Interesting, The Raid was intense, btw. I'll have to look into that style, there are thousands out there and I've never heard of Bak Mei. Thanks!
If it's Wushu, it might be influenced by some very, very old style of Wushu because modern day Wushu is strictly a performance art for competition.
Makes me wonder what styles of martial arts they are pulling from. Kung Fu by itself isn't even a style, so it would be nice to know what specific martial arts styles they looked at.
@ILikeStake Hey, I love the game to death, but I do agree it is highly overrated. But, what it does, it nails perfectly so it's hard to dismiss it. Demon's Souls is more my jam, personally. Have you tried Bloodborne?
An emulator would have to offer more solutions than just emulation. I want to be able to pop in a disc and convert it to a working ISO that is stored on the device. If it can’t offer something like that, well, my PC already hits the mark. Sorry Sony.
I always immediately notice the difference when I go between 30 and 60. It's jarring to me. I know others may not notice, but boy, those missing frames really make a difference.
@everynowandben Consoles are fairly up to pace with PCs. Now, they are all motorcycles, it's just one goes 50km and the other goes 60km. They are pretty close.
@Dubbicakes Oh! Ok that makes sense. I wish Square used a better naming convention that is more an indication of what the darned thing is. Thanks for clarifying, much appreciated.
Oooh, this was such a fun table-top game, back in the day! Glad it's getting some attention, this looks awesome! Hopefully it retains the deep character customization of the table-top game, that was the most fun part! I'm in.
@Axelay71 The music that came out of that game was stunning, and amazing considering the hardware it ran on! It's easily one of the best shooters available, I recommend it to all my friends that play shmups.
It depends on the game. If it's a 90 hour long JRPG, I feel less inclined to replay because I saw everything and that was that.
I just hit 5,000 hours in Dark Souls 2 on my PC since its release in 2014. One reason I replay it so much is a) I regularly speed run to beat my personal times, and b) there is just that much variety in what you can do with your character builds, so the experience rarely feels stale.
Generally, if I'm replaying a game, it's because I like something about the experience and it feels good to see the sights or hear the sounds and music again. Hell, I just rewatched the old Transformers movie last week, felt just as exciting as the first time when I was a wee one LOL
One reason I rarely buy new games, is because they are bloody expensive, and I don't like blowing money on a potential dud. Time is limited, so if I know I'm gonna have a good time by replaying something I love, vs. experimenting with a new game that will be potentially disappointing, I almost always go with replays.
@nessisonett Chugging Budweiser? I’ve NEVER been at an event where beer was served, only to hear a song that might come out of a modern Lupine the 3rd anime OST. Doesn’t seem to fit together. You don’t have to like the music, but at least give us a better diss hahaha
@Eadgar Thanks! I get great performance out of my slim PS4, so I'm sure it will be fine. Sekiro ran pretty good so I'm sure it will handle this game, too!
@Eadgar How well does it run on PS4? I'm thinking about grabbing it, but I have the PC version and that's pretty stunning. Still, I wouldn't mind grabbing a disc version if it runs well.
