@commentlife Who would be turned off by removing a few screws and plugging something into a slot? Main thing to be aware of is static discharge, but that’s solved by simply touching a piece of metal. Hopefully people read up on that!
@Bdbrady Last time I played it was at launch, years ago. It has a great amount of potential, but at the time it was riddled with performance issues so I left it alone after a few hours. I think I’ll revisit it to see how things changed, because it’s a beautiful game with interesting combat. The story is a little juvenile, but passable.
@middyone Computers have them, but there’s no consequence when they run out. Replace the battery, carry on as normal, all it does on a PC is save bios settings. If you’ve been paying attention to gaming news, you will have learned that the CMOS battery bricks the PS4 when it dies, unless you can authenticate Sony’s server after you replace the battery. That means when PS4 and PS5 gets discontinued, you won’t be able to play anything on it, including discs. I’m surprised you don’t know about it.
@middyone I trashed it as a mental “f...you” to Sony. It felt great. No, I will not be buying a PS5, since it will face the same problem with CMOS as the PS4. Screw Sony.
@Spiders There’s pop ups for everything new that you acquire, it’s such a huge turnoff. There’s even a pop up that appears towards the end of the game. Very frustrating to see that in a From game
@Northern_munkey Actually, people complain about final fantasy all the time. When I spoke up about FF15 on Kotaku, Gamespot or IGN, I got my head damn near chopped off lol
@JB_Whiting I dunno. I’m being skeptical. I hated Sekiro, and Bloodborne never pulled me in the way Demons/Dark Souls did. The trailer looks good, but I’m getting kind sick of hearing chosen undead/cursed one/ashen one and now “tarnished.” Would have been nice if they laid off that, makes the games feel too recycled.
Until they fix the CMOS oversight, Sony is absolute scum in my book. In a few more years, there will be 110 million bricks in peoples homes after they can’t load games or discs. Why that isn’t on the top of everyone’s mind in this conversation is beyond any logical reasoning. Sony is literally stealing money due to that immense oversight.
@middyone It’s a big issue. Everyone is spending thousands on these things that will stop working. Sony is getting to keep our money, but our consoles will brick. Anyway, I had a huge smile on my face last week as I simply put my PS4 in a trash can. Couldn’t be happier without that awful thing.
@middyone Keep in mind, you just asked me why you would change a battery, a thing with finite energy that runs out after a certain time. CMOS batteries last about 10-12 years, so assuming the PS4 is still supported that far ahead, in that amount of time you may or may not have a brick when it runs out.
@Nepp67 Did you read up on what happens when you try to change the CMOS in a PS4? That right there is going to remove any value from that system in a few years!
@AdamNovice The only reason I want PS4 games on PC is because changing the CMOS on a PC doesn’t brick the system, unlike Sony’s consoles. From a games preservation perspective, getting Sony exclusives to PC just means we will be able to continue to enjoy them beyond the lifespan of a watch battery and a server.
@The_New_Butler I'm talking about internal SSDs/NVmE's. You can't install your own NVmE on a PS5? I thought they were adding that functionality soon? Isn't there a second drive bay inside the PS5?
@The_New_Butler Mid-range speeds. You really don't need bleeding edge speed for SSDs/NvMEs anyway. Even lower-end devices are more than enough. Save your money and go mid-range; I have those types of drives on all my PCs, PS3 and PS4 and my load times are all below 7 seconds, depending on the game.
@wiiware Yeah, games are getting so big these days. You will want to eventually upgrade your storage, and then do your best to keep 10-20% of open space on each drive. If you do that, the drives should last 15-20 years or more!
When I shop around for an internal SSD, a 2TB Crucial is around $200, and when I shop around for an NvME, at 2TB they are only around another $30, so $250 ish, depending on brand. Seems like a fair price for the lifespan and performance of the drives.
@AllDaSportsALLOFDEM I’m not going to live my life based on your values. I (and others) don’t support such practices. Hardware failure is one thing, and that’s understandable. Stuff breaks. But if Sony doesn’t have a way to fix this, then they just ran off with everyone’s money and we get nothing in return. If you’re ok with that, you do you.
@AllDaSportsALLOFDEM This article is actually highly important. I wouldn’t blow it off; Sony is starting to appear to be the snake oil salesman, who will end up stealing your money, in the end.
@truerbluer You ever heard of the Goldberg steam emulator? People are already prepped for that issue. Every purchase I’ve ever made is backed up in triplicate, and fully playable without needing steam.
@solocapers Agreed! I had a feeling that investing a lot of money into a PS4 would someday prove to be a bad idea. People on this website seem to think that a company stealing your money is no big deal. Hardware failure is one thing, but this oversight is downright anti consumer.
@lacerz Actions speak louder than words. While Sony isn't talking much, they are saying a lot with their recent actions. I'm not saying what they are doing is positive. I'm answering your question. You said they aren't telling us anything. I'm saying they are telling us everything, with their actions instead of words. And if you are concerned about shareholder information, I found that in 3 seconds:
@lacerz I think Sony's roadmap has been pretty clear. Cancel first party studios in Japan, close down old online servers. They are cost-cutting, right now. New stuff will happen after they are done with whatever they are doing at this phase.
@AhmadSumadi Exactly. I mean, I have to admit, I doubled up on some copies of Mario 3D all stars, so I can't wait for that to pay off. I normally don't do that, but hey, life happens.
@GADG3Tx87 It's literally their smartest move. Eventually, it won't be viable to make consoles and hardware for the public. So just have the public use their phones for streaming services. They are just planning ahead for the inevitable.

@kyleforrester87 That's what annoyed me about Sekiro. I hate tutorial pop ups, I hope they learned from Sekiro and roll that back.
