Octopath Traveler for me. Really like the structure, stories are nice, combat is good. Wish I didn’t have to keep switching up characters in towns though, gets tiresome that.
Damn, just bought Core Keeper last month! Don’t sleep on it people, it’s such a fun game. Definitely game of the month. The other two wouldn’t interest me.
@Dimey I’ve also been playing since the 80s, C64 being my first gaming experience, had all the consoles, but don’t feel like getting the next at launch. You are right graphics have largely plateaued (at least until AI takes over so we aren’t reliant on man-hours)…however, what saved me was VR. It’s a game changer, and getting more powerful hardware genuinely makes a huge difference again. So, yeah, if Sony announce PSVR3, I’ll get PS6, if not I may well get the Steam machine instead.
It may not only be RAM prices which dictate, but MS plans too. The last time MS got the jump on Sony was the 360 era. They came out a year early and took a lot of Sonys user base (other reasons too off course, such as price). Took Sony some time to wrestle them back. Would they risk that again, or just take the hit to profit margins? I don’t have the numbers to guess.
Absolutely, exclusives means the chance to get the most for your money on the platform you purchased. Has always been that way, and logic dictates it always will. Apart from online multiplayer games perhaps, which I don’t care about at all.
I don’t do multiplayer due to being old enough to have outgamed all of the mates I grew up with, as well as become annoyed with the younger generation who often inhabit multiplayer games like this. Plus having a full time job and wife, and thus the inability to easily schedule time with others.
If I was a kid again I’d likely enjoy the game though.
Oblivion should be nowhere near this list. Not only was it a technical mess, but they left the most egregious mistakes of the original untouched. Just about as bad as they could possibly have managed.
Interesting. Not the biggest fan of the middle finger to trophies thing ( I remember Don’t Starve did it, which just removed a potentially fun feature) but the game sounds interesting enough to give it a go anyway. Let’s go see how much it is on PSN.
Edit: Looks like it’s only £8 or so, so I’ll get it when the current price increase period has finished.
I know it means going to an external source, but I’d appreciate it if you had a separate section for (or only included) games which are put to their lowest price ever. Sales which keep putting games down to the same old price are not sales, just normal prices with periods of being massively conned when they temporarily go up again…
@LifeGirl
Exactly my thoughts. Soul to me seems like an illusion in ourselves, and a placeholder for the deterministic actions we can’t understand in others. People are no less iterative in their use of external stimuli than AI, you just can’t look into their brains in the same way we can an AIs coding.
No real surprise for Sony, continued sales this far after launch are more due to the price being lowered and people of lesser means finally being able to jump on board. If the price is only just dropping to launch price then that’s a large part of the market still locked out. A lack of blockbuster games is a small issue, likely resolved by GTA6 soon, but I have to think most who can afford this price have already bought one with the games already available.
I am surprised by the Switch 2 though, I’d think that was second console material for those many millions still able to afford that, but perhaps second consoles don’t have to be upgraded as fast, and many are sticking to Switch 1.
I remember soul blade being vastly superior in its quest mode to the sequel, but never tried the games beyond that disappointment. Will give this a go if they add trophy challenges to supplement the content.
For me, it’s more about whether you have the support and power of a big publisher behind you. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that no big publisher has a hand in supporting you to any degree, as if a publisher gives you a tiny tiny budget, 3 members of staff, and no marketing at all, for a passion project, this isn’t fundamentally different to a small team getting a small amount of seed money and being truly independent of a publisher.
For a consumer, the game that is possible under these conditions is what makes something “an indie game” as far as I’m concerned.
A shorter dev period and more streamlined game is what I would like anyway. Hated that BG3 was so expansive that I felt like I had to follow a guide so I didn’t miss 90% of the game (sure, it’s designed to be played multiple times, but I wasn’t blessed with multiple lives sadly). In the end I just dropped it, despite being quite hyped for it and having it be one of the very few games I’ve got at near full price digitally.
Enjoyed the game while I could stomach how broken it was, then the constant crashes meant I had to stop playing. Hopefully they’ll fix their game some day.
@GamingGod
The best trophies get you to play a different way or try different things. A list like this, which you can completely ignore and are just given for playing, is not only a missed opportunity, but supports people’s unjustified view that trophy challenges are pointless trinkets for the vain to somehow show off, rather something that adds to a game. Too many people think that and we lose them altogether.
Wo long and granblue fantasy both look good. For £1.66 it would be churlish to be anything but happy about Soul Calibur 3! Presuming it has trophy challenges added.
@Marquez
Not hard to have that kind of “willpower” when you have such a ridiculous backlog, not to mention subscription games you can’t keep up with!
And I’m not saying it’s not worth full price, but for ownership of a product you can resell. If I lose my resale value by going digital I’ll wait for the price drop to the amount that the difference is likely to be.
I’m late here but as it’s on plus now so I have renewed interest - can anyone tell me one graphical issues mentioned here, is it merely jaggies, which I can cope with, or does it have the kind of blurry plus visual noise that completely destroyed Metaphor: ReFantazio for me?
@MrPeanutbutterz Yep. Releasing as is would be one thing, but creating a better, more authentic game, marketing it on its down and dirty world and specifically it being uncensored, then sneaking into patch 1.04/1.05 censorship. No. Screw em. Plenty of other games to play.
Well, it was censored after release to remove nudity, so I’d rate it very badly. Especially as they sold it on the fact they didn’t censor anything. Stopped playing as soon as I found that out, but it was pretty OK the couple of hours I played. Nothing special.
46 games. 41 PS5
Top 5: Monster Train 2, Hades, Core Keeper, Ishin, Elden Ring

Played a lot of long games this year that I got bored with before the plat, so only got 2 plats, whereas I used to get a couple a month. 332 trophies in total, but only plats are relevant.
Somehow I had 5 multiplayer hours this year. No parties joined, messages or friends lol.
Man, yet another one to potentially add to the backlog. I’m confident the people that made pixel ripped 1978 will do good here and I really liked the show, so the original writers and cast is a big win. I don’t understand how people claim there aren’t enough PSVR2 games. It seems just because people only count first party.
@GamingGod That’s a shame. If the trophy campaign isn’t finished I’ll wait. Hopefully one day it will be. Ideally by the time it comes to PSVR2. Would always hold off for that anyway.
Couldn’t be bothered with this one. It was a pretty game (first game I tried HDR on on PS4 I think), but puzzle games can easily bore me. If I could play it in VR I might have stuck with it just for the visuals, but there’s only so far flat games can entice me in that sense.
In terms of Platinum trophies, I’m not really interested in them for pure puzzle games as you can always just use a guide. It makes them mean nothing. And if you cared about it there would always be that temptation…
I must be the only person that’s never heard of this game
Just looked into it. Looks my thing, and only £12. Unfortunately I just learned it won’t be finished until July 😞
Will wait to see whether the jan update adds new trophies. If it does I’ll presume the others will too and will begrudgingly wait half a year to play it.
It’s already changed a lot. No more naughty video stores with FMV girls, etc. maybe as it’s set in these crappy times rather than the 80s, who knows, but the newer Like a Dragon games don’t have anything like the atmosphere of Yakuza 1-4/5
Impulse bought Octopath Traveller 1 and 2 bundle for £35.99. Lowest price it’s been and a great price for both games combined. On my way home from work yo haven’t a go.
