The Last of Us is arguably the best looking game available on the PlayStation 3, so it’s hard to imagine it looking much better. However, that’s exactly what Naughty Dog’s promising with its upcoming PlayStation 4 port of the post-apocalyptic escapade, The Last of Us Remastered. The big question is: will you be able to spot the improvements?
We’ll need to wait for the game’s 29th July release date to find out for sure, but GameSpot has pieced together an early comparison using footage from the re-release’s E3 2014 trailer. You’ll want to watch the video in high-definition at full screen to get the full effect, but you can clearly see that the boosted resolution has really enhanced the cinematics.
Of course, with the gameplay also set to run at 60 frames-per-second, you should expect even more improvements during the title’s moment-to-moment action. Are you impressed by this quick comparison, or were you expecting a bigger jump? Beware of spoilers, and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

No it looks better on the PS1 Looks even more LOVELY on the PS4
I never really got into the game. A lot of people liked it, but I didn't care much for it so I never finished it. I ended up trading it off. LOL It is a great looking game, but I didn't care much for it.
@Demi_God How far did you get?
I never got to play it as I traded my ps3 in early to pay for the ps4. I will be buying this so I can check out the hype for myself
That 60fps is the seller. That TLoURM trailer at E3 was amazing tho. Made me want to play the game even more^-^
Wow, the difference is way more pronounced than I was expecting. I did play and love it on PS3, but I'll be darned if I don't really want to play it again!
hope its cross buy =P
@Demi_God Blasphemy.
This is my alltime favourite game. ever. I dont think the improvements are too vast, but still, going to get it again. I'm just in (fatherly) love with Ellie and Joel is my instrument of protecting her!
For me the difference doesn't justify a double dip but it does look nice.
@Mrskinner I bought into the hype and switched from Xbox 360 to PS3, this game had me scared and crying, and I'm a 32 year old male. Probably because I'm in the "father"-age I could SO relate with it all. I was never ever touched that much by any game. Make sure you take your time without too much distractions and really SINK yourself into the atmosphere. Once you pickup Ellie things go awesome!
@Scollurio I'm a 35 year old man with 3 daughters, so I take it this is going to make me cry? Lol
This game came too late in the PS3 era, so its great that its coming to the PS4.
Was I seriously supposed to see a difference?
Is it just me or did the PS3 footage look like they added a slight blur filter to it? I don't remember it looking like that on my playthrough. I love this and it is one of my favorites. I hope they give you a discount if you already own the PS3 version. I plan on buying the PS4 version either way.
@Mrskinner I've got four daughters, and after the intro sequence... Niagra falls.
@AhabSpampurse amazing, never had a game get to me like that. I look forward to the experience.
I still don't get why they need to have a trailer full of spoilers. Sounds silly. Its a shame
Nope they have a long ways to go to make me buy it again on PS4. This in nothing compared to Tomb Raider improvements on PS4.
OMG!! I cant wait!! I want to play it now!
Never played this game ether seance i sold my PS3 before this game was released. I don't have any kids myself, but i hope it makes me cry a little bit as well. ^^
I loved the game, but not enough to buy it again, let alone at full price.
But if somehow you have not played it, this is obviously the definitive version.
@Mrskinner @Scollurio I'm 42, have no kids, can't stand kids, and the opening still had me in tears.
How can you compare the 1024p PS4 version on a compressed 720p youtube clip? You are not seeing anything close to what it actually looks like.
Not saying that the PS4 version is anything other than just sharper, more detailed textures and framerate. But this clip will not help see the visual impact of it.
@Demi_God
I hear ya. I just got done beating the game (& Left Behind DLC), & while I thought it was a good game, it certainly didn't live up to the hype or perfect scores, in my opinion.
Why the poo do they use youtube for these comparison vids. ? Pointless pointless pointless
@Mrskinner If you got any heart, you'll at least feel uneasy, angry, protective and enraged in certain moments, all of which with the burning heart of a father protecting his daughters! It's awesome. Trust me on that!
@JohnKarnes Yes but the difference was only so noticable because Tomb Raider on PS3 was nowhere near the quality of The Last of Us. Not saying its a bad game, only that the graphics weren't up to the level of TLoU.
@Paranoimia I was torn the whole game because it made me feel like I'd love to have a real life daugther to raise and protect and on the other hand I was really glad that I don't - scary world and all that. Phew.
@Mrskinner
It'll get to you. I don't have kids and it got to me a little. No crying but there were parts that got me as saddened as I think a game can. There's also one really cool moment that I won't spoil, but I'm sure you'll comment on when you play the game.
You're all forgetting the main point; the cut scenes were already stunning on PS3 but the gameplay was lower graphical quality. The PS4 cut scene is noticeably better but the real difference will be in the gameplay which will apparently now use the same models and textures as the cut scenes
Can't wait to see that!
@Scollurio As the father of 3 daughters, I can tell you the game had impact!
Who knows, but I wonder if many of the people who didn't love the game are in their 20s.
This was a day 1 purchase for me on the PS3, but after having already shelled out extra cash then to get the Joel edition (survival pack case is awesome!), it's going to be difficult to justify the spend for this.
What would be great is if people who had the Season Pass for the PS3 version were given a free download copy. Never going to happen, but we can dream!
