Sony's Considering Multiple PS4 Hardware Packages

Posted by Sammy Barker

Value added

To date, Sony’s only really announced one version of the PlayStation 4. The competitively priced $399.99 option includes the console and a DualShock 4, but the platform holder is considering deploying some bigger bundles. In an interview with MCV, SCEE president Jim Ryan added that larger packages are something that the platform holder’s currently “looking at”.

“In Europe, we have had success with offering premium propositions that offer great value,” he said. “We honestly have not made any decisions about what we are doing at launch. But it is something that we are looking at."

At the moment, the PS4 doesn’t come with the new PlayStation Eye, so we suspect that the inclusion of the camera would make sense in a bundle. The company could also include a PlayStation Plus subscription now that it’s opted to charge for online multiplayer. Are there any particular bundles that you’d like to see? Let us know in the comments section below.

PS4 including PS+ for a year and a decent game...Killzone or BF 4 would be cool. And all that for around 480,- Euros. Hey, a man can dream, right?

A plus subscription and camera bundle would be cool. Since you get that Drive Club 'Prologue' with plus there's your game as well. Whatever Sony plans to do I hope it decides fast because if there's a good bundle I'd switch my pre-order of the $400 model over.

On a side note I wish we could get a release date already. My hype level for the PS4 is through the roof and I want to know exactly when I can get it.

i'm guessing one just by it's self, one with the PSEye (and it will still be cheaper than the XB180), one with a selected game, one with a years worth of PS+ and one with all three Eye, Game and PS+

Gamer83 said:

Yeah, I think that's about as good a launch bundle as you could ask for these days. Certainly better what the Wii U offered.

I think it would be cool if Sony had a $499 bundle with PS+ and PS Eye and maybe possibly through in Knack as a mascot role. A PS4 and Vita bundle would be cool also but because of the high price it would take I don't think it would sell too good.

Foulkey said:

It would be rather expensive but a bundle with a Vita and PS+. My problem with the Vita is the time i get to play games is when im sat in front of the tv so i may aswel play the console instead.

Gamer83 said:

It won't happen right away but a PS4/Vita bundle does seem like a real strong possibility at some point.

Reverend_Skeeve said:

@Gamer83 Personally, I have zero interest in the PSEye just now, so I still hope Sony'll bring out a decent-priced bundle without the Eye but some other decent stuff.

A bundle with the Eye included would be nice, though for all those who want it...and I guess as well that it would be cheaper than X180, still.

Also, I'd like to see a PS4/Vita bundle...couldn't/wouldn't aford it myself, but I'd like to see Sony promote cross-play and the Vita simultaniously.

I'm not a big fan of the PS Eye either but that just seems to me like the kind of early gen bundle a company goes for. Plus is the big thing since it's now required for online, it gets you Drive Club as well so Sony could advertise that as a selling point and the PS Eye could possibly get into a few more homes than if it hadn't been bundled.

Reverend_Skeeve said:

Yeah, I can totally see why it would make sense for Sony to release a SKU with the Eye...I just hope the'll release another one without it. I'll definitely get Plus, though...I want to at least be able to play online, even if I don't do it often...and DriveClub and two Indie-games from day one is a real bargain.

Speaking of the Eye, any OFFICIAL word if Move and Nav work w/ PS4? I saw the mM sculpting video but I dont recall seeing a Nav w/ any PS4 content.

I wouldn't object to the eye, but some solid launch software for it needs to beyond tech demo's. The Playroom looks great, but I want to know what else is going to be around, or how/if the launch lineup will use it.

@rjejr From what I've read, they're both PS Camera compatible. Which is why I'm hoping for a PS Camera bundle with 3 free months of Plus.

I plan on buying the cam anyway, but that bundle would be very convenient.

Reverend_Skeeve said:

@Gamer83 Yes. If I had a PS3, I'd also upgrade to Plus right away. It seems to be an absolute steal for all the free games you get for fifty bucks a year.

Always wanted to ask: I guess you download the games to your PS3 HDD or Vita...but: can you still play them when your Plus subscription is over or do you have to have Plus to be able to continue playing them, even if they're still on your HDD?

FullbringIchigo said:

@Reverend_Skeeve you have to have plus to play the games but with 24+ games a year it's well worth staying subscribed just think of it like this out of those 24 games just think that by paying for plus you brought one of them and the other 23 are free games

Reverend_Skeeve said:

Cool, thanks for the info...and I though so. But still, I agree...even if you have to stay subscripted to play the games, it's still a killer deal, no doubt. Will definitly get Plus on my PS4.

Amazon offers bundles with a year of PS+ along with either Killzone or Battlefield 4 for $499 here in the US (I'm not sure about EU). I'd love a $500 bundle with the Eye and PS+ though. Maybe a 750 GB HD too.

ReyLuca said:

Put in my $100 reserve at GStop... $20 every other week from here on until release will pretty much cover it. Plan it out early fellow PSers and don't get into credit card debt!

GraveLordXD said:

Here in the US they have about 5 different preorder packages at GameStop and best buy

mibtar said:

I doubt if it'll be a good idea to have a bundle with the camera since they don't have a game that supports it yet. Too bad FFXV isn't a launch title, it would've been awesome.

BlueProxy said:

Would be nice if they had a few options like with camera, or extra controller, or game, and each bundle could include PS+ sub. Either way, they should keep pricing at $460 or less. Otherwise people will see it as the same price as a xbox (even though it's a better value).

Reverend_Skeeve said:

@SkullHydra @FullbringIchigo No Bundles at Amazon Germany at the moment, either...but that's not surprising if Amazon UK doesn't offer some. Hope to see some popping up in the coming week. Would totally go for a Killzone or BF4 Bundle with one year PS+ for around EUR 499,- so let's hope, I guess...

FullbringIchigo said:

@Reverend_Skeeve the way i see it is that if i just pre-order the game separately it would only cost about £400 so if they didn't do a bundle i would still be spending less than just buying a bog standard XB1

Reverend_Skeeve said:

@FullbringIchigo Yeah, same thing here. Even if doesn't do a bundle, I'd have to pay about EUR 520,- for the standard PS4 plus Killzone and PS+ for a year. I think there's one year of Xbox Live Gold included in the Day One Edition of the X1, but even then, I'd only pay 20 bucks more than for X1 and already have 1 AAA-game. Not to mention the PS+ edition of DriveClub and the two indie titles coming for free as well...AND Warframe and other free to play games. So excited...and holding thumbs for a cool bundle nonetheless.

I pre-ordered the PS4 with Watch dogs, I hope to get a bundle that comes with a second DS4 to play GT6.

BlackRebl said:

Another thing we haven't heard anything about, is whether they're gonna release different colors and special editions.
I'm secretly hoping for a Watch Dogs special edition console with custom controllers... or just a white PS4 with matching controllers.

In any case I'm still holding off preordering the console until they dish up some preorders with more than just the bare essentials.

Just to clarify - because I don't know if everyone understands this. You have to be subscribed to use the games. But if you stop your subscription and then reactivate it (say three months later), you still get all those games back. The only downside to letting your sub slip would be the cloud saving and missing out on the games that are only available in those months.

Reverend_Skeeve said:

@ztpayne7 Thanks for the clarification, appreciate it! That's how I thought the system works and I'm totally cool with that. I would get it on PS4 even if multiplayer was still free. No brainer.

Tasuki said:

If they had a PS4 and Vita bundle I would scoop that up no question asked.

Gamer83 said:

I think it'll happen eventually, in fact, if Vita sales keep going the way they have, it'll almost be necessary if Sony wants to attempt to get that system into more homes. I doubt it happens within the first 6-8 months though.

Sutorcen said:

PS4 + 2nd controler
PS4 + PS Eye
PS4 + 2nd controler + PS Eye
PS4 + Vita

Include games and or PS Plus subscriptions to these bundles and I think we have all of the possible bundles covered.

Wrigleykinnick said:

yess please!
system + one year psPLUS+the eye+ extra paddle
and a game like Madden or Need for speed.
somethin like that would be great
