Re: Sony Rewarded with Soaring Stocks After Revealing All-Digital Future

@Porco You're partly right but not 100%. There is a way to see the revenue of physical software vs digital software (no DLC, microtransactions, etc included).

There's absolutely no doubt the digital sales utterly dwarf the physical sales.

However, people are also right to point out that there's simply more content available digitally than there is physically.

There are also charts from Circana that show the decline in physical sales revenue in the US over the last two decades which is undeniable.

However, it did increase slightly in 2025 suggesting it's "bottomed out" now, and still represents $1.6 billion, which is not nothing.

So there's nuance here. The data absolutely shows a gigantic trend towards digital, but it also proves there is a market for physical that remains.

@PloverNutter Yeah, it's why I don't completely agree with people who say Sony should be making more AA/lower budget games.

It's not a solution. They won't stand out and they'll flop in this environment sadly.

Don't know what the answers are to those problems, but squeezing out dozens of poorly marketed, unremarkable games is not the answer when there's already too much choice and competition.

I've been saying for a while that I actually think Xbox has been making too many games and just throwing them out without any attention, marketing, or fanfare.

I know it sounds weird to say they had "too much content", but I'm really not surprised so many titles underperformed.

They just dropped a lot of them. Stuff like Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 are great examples of that.

@themightyant I've never understood why they don't do physical releases later.

Like communicate clearly with customers what you're doing, get the most up-to-date "finished" version of the game on the disc, include a manual or poster or whatever, nice box art.

Charge more if you have to, fine. But make it a premium experience that people actually feel good about buying.

You might even get people to "double-dip" that way, and if it's all about the bottom line, then doesn't that work in your favour?

@themightyant Agreed, I mentioned that in the article:

"It should be noted that this data is based on unit sales, where a limited number of physical products are being pitted against a broader range of digital titles – many often available at low prices.

But for a different comparison, in its most recent quarter, physical game sales represented ~$109 million of its revenue. During the same period, digital accounted for ~$1.5 billion."
