I’m all for ports, remasters, and remakes of old games, but even I’m struggling to rationalise why the first Call of Duty: Black Ops has landed on PS5 in 2026.
A multiplayer legend of the PS3 days? Absolutely. It came at the peak of Call of Duty dominance and became a strong fan favourite. However, that was 16 years ago, and nostalgia can’t paper over enough cracks to justify a barebones port.
Call of Duty: Black Ops on PS5 is Call of Duty: Black Ops as it was on PS3.
There are minimal visual improvements. You don’t get a frame rate boost. You don’t get an FOV slider. You don’t get any new content.
Call of Duty: Black Ops runs at 1080p on PS5 — that is the single and only enhancement the port has over the original 2010 version.
You can’t push the frame rate up to 120FPS; it remains at 60FPS. Added to more recent Call of Duty titles on console, there’s no field of view slider. The PS5 DualSense controller features aren’t utilised in any way.

And publisher Activision is charging £34.99 / $39.99 for it.
PS Plus members have access to a 50% discount for a month, but that only reduces the price to what the port should have probably cost in the first place. Call of Duty games rarely receive deep sales, so the 16-year-old Call of Duty: Black Ops will spend most of its time at full price on PS5.
You don’t even get all the content with that purchase; Activision has chosen to sell a season pass containing the four multiplayer and Zombies map packs. Again, PS Plus subscribers have one month to buy them at a discounted rate, but without the sale, the season pass is £25.99 / $29.99.

Nobody should have to pay these kinds of prices for the port of a PS3 game released in 2010 — it’s a complete and utter rip-off.
What of the game itself, though? It launched when Call of Duty campaigns were still a highlight, and Black Ops still offers enjoyable single player levels despite how dated it is.
The first entry to set the series in the Cold War, this was where you got the famous “The numbers, Mason” quote in a campaign of illusion and intensity. It’s packed full of excellent set-piece moments and now iconic characters, all building to a cracking finale that’s now spawned six sequels.
When fans say they want the return of quality Call of Duty campaigns, this is what they’re talking about.

The multiplayer modes, meanwhile, are actually a strong example of the online suite PlayStation fans have been yearning for: a straightforward package with no live service elements. You can fire up a few rounds of Team Deathmatch, have a good time, then log off without any fears you’ll miss out on something between play sessions.
It’s not going to compare to the scale and polish of today's multiplayer efforts, and peer-to-peer connections rather than dedicated servers for online matches mean connection issues will be more frequent. There are also reports of input lag, and a lack of crossplay restricts you to matchmaking with the PS5, PS4 player base alone.
There is some fun to be had online, but make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.
Zombies, meanwhile, occupies an interesting position in Black Ops: it was Treyarch’s second attempt, so it was a more comprehensive offering than the original World at War mode, but it hadn’t reached the complexities of the latest games.

As such, Black Ops presents a great jumping-on point if the Zombies modes in the most recent titles are too hard for you to follow with all their wacky objectives and features.
The content of the base game remains entertaining, then, but Treyarch and port studio Iron Galaxy needed graphical and frame rate updates on top to even come close to validating the price point.
There’s no two ways about it: this is a PS3 game being sold on PS5 at a premium.
As good as Call of Duty: Black Ops might have been all those years ago, you’re better off spending your money on pretty much anything else.
Conclusion
Call of Duty might have been the king of multiplayer during the PS3 era, but you can’t charge as much as $40 for that same 2010 experience all these years later. Black Ops on PS5 is a barebones port of a 16-year-old title — an offer you should outright refuse to invest in.

Honestly I was able to look past everything except the input lag. It is horrendous, idek how its like that
So much for Microsoft being in the corner of gamers...yikes.
My enjoyment of cod ended around the time of World at war and I went all in on Battlefield. It just felt so much more game
I kinda understand porting them so people can enjoy them on PS5/PS4 (clearly there's an appetite for this), but:
1) They've got to bump the resolution, even if they don't rework the textures, etc.
2) They've got to reduce the prices. Just too expensive for what they're offering.
Great review Liam!
Vote with your wallets. Let’s fight Microsoft lapping up on easy money when they’re not earning it.
Damn. Makes Nintendo ports look meticulous by comparison.
It's a simple cash grab from Microsoft. They have to start generating revenue from that Activision buyout somewhere. Absolutely ridiculous on their part to even think this was a good idea. Why would anybody want a 2010 game in 2026 without any enhancements at all???
4 is too high a score. This game has no redeeming features, pratically the same game as 16 years ago, and charging a premium for it.
If a game is an out-and-out rip-off, it should get a 0
Its a shame they didnt put some effort into making the ports cause they are good games with great campaigns but this is to lazy to support.
I got this on PS3 from a charity shop last year for 50p. It still has loads of people playing online. I don't really like multiplayer games much but this is alright to throw on while having a couple of beers. Plus the online is still free!
Nintendo did something similar with Mario Galaxy 1&2 in terms of charging a similar price.
They were however absolute masterpieces of games so slightly easier to swallow (in my opinion at least)
Get ‘em Liam. Had the appearance of a cash grab and everything I see about it has confirmed that.
@get2sammyb "Great review Liam!" Really? All I read was a series of complaints and not a lot else. It was more of an overview of the zombies mode and the multiplayer. I agree that its over priced as a bare bones port and more love should have been given to what I view as one of the best entry's in the franchise but great review? That's a reach at best.
The biggest selling point is the removal of theater mode, and all of the "infected" clips that gives players working mod menus just by watching said clips in the theater. This game is infested with cheaters on Xbox, I fired up BO1 yesterday after getting the urge seeing the hype spreading on social media only to be met with players flying around the map, no clipping through walls and shooting rocket launchers with infinite ammo.
@GamingGod damn you missed out on some great CODs then
Yet it will sell extremely well because of 'member berries.
@BrokenByTheScream comparing a first party dev that makes games for their own system to a third party dev, lol
All I’ve seen for a week or whatever is ***** Sony etc etc digital etc etc - then PS players are lapping this ***** up.
Shows how little internet voices mean.
@get2sammyb
Absolutely agree!
I remember the good old days when you could expect a collection of old games with graphic bumps usually for a budget price too e.g. God of War Collection, Jake & Daxter collection, Sly Cooper collection etc.
I just feels like we are constantly being exploited as gamers and it's getting pretty frustrating.
@nomither6 nah..I was having too much fun on BF3,4&1 brilliant games mate
Assuming the community will stay quite active over time, I think these are very reasonably priced for some of the best multiplayer shooters ever. Even moreso with the ps plus discount, which if u were gonna take advantage of everything these ports have to offer, you're gonna have plus anyway. It genuinely could've been worse like charging the same 20 for a barebones gameboy rom 😂
Well this is... quite hilarious. Turns out there's no such thing as an easy win.
@Northern_munkey You're entitled to your opinion but I think it was an excellent review that focused on the things people will most want to know about.
Also credit to Liam for working his ass off to deliver this review promptly so he could help people make an informed decision after these games were shadow dropped yesterday.
@nomither6 Yes. And?
Price shouldn’t be taken into account for the score:
While a game usually remains mostly unchanged for the majority of its lifetime, the price can drastically change over time and often does. This lets reviews like this here age like fine milk.
@Judal27
That would be fair if they had put even a minimal effort into the ports, this is just a disgusting cash grab, even at 20 quid. I picked up Metal Gear Solid Collection 1 for 40 quid, I am not opposed to paying for older games, but I hate getting ripped off.
@get2sammyb yeah OK..
@Shirtpotatoes75 ain’t that the truth. It’s appalling
Well my nephew immediately bought it so nostalgia really is the easiest way to sell a game.
@Shirtpotatoes75 again this is only assuming the community stays active. These are still old games so the chance it dies off again is pretty big. And if it does, you'd lose a mode and half the fun of the other one (not counting solely playing with friends locally), that's when I'd think these wouldn't be worth it at those prices. But I'm not sure what else people were wanting out of ports without turning it into a remaster/remake. They played great and still play great
@ATaco Nostalgia is one hell of a drug
@get2sammyb you've upgraded the review from 'great' to 'excellent'. I look forward to someone else disagreeing to see how much better it can get! 😄
I've zero interest in this (or any CoD game), but this to me is a positive.
Enjoy your digital-only future, with no price competition.
It might've been worth it if the dlc was part of the package. I haven't played the other zombies maps but I think its zombies are too hard to make it worth the purchase when I played it on PS3 earlier this year.
Hell yeah show them turds who's boss
The same people screaming boycott sony over no discs are the first to buy this digital download crap and it's dlc
Every comment section on here is just going to be digital and physical buyers taking potshots at each other isn’t it…
@Noone2025 Yeah because all 90,000,000 + PS5 owners are one person, aren't they?
I'm sensing a future PS Plus Essential game coming soon
And yet idiots will and have already bought this because CALL OF DUTYYYYYYYYY
Sigh.
@CaptainBiscuitJeans your comment reads like that Eric Andre meme where he's shooting the guy behind him then blames literally anyone else
@Noone2025 I doubt the same people mad at Sony for killing physical games are the people buying this *****.
I think 4 is harsh yes the price is ridiculous but and sure the could have been enhancments but its still the brilliant game that people enjoyed back then a 7 seems fairer to me maybe an 8 if the price was better and it had enhancements.
Occassional game where input lag is insane but buddy and i got a great session in last night
Mind you, I've seen people on social media that rebeled against sony for tossing aside physical media who bought this game unironically (I recall someone saying "Sony, I hate you but I will buy this game because I love Black Ops" or something)
I'm so glad I wasn't CoD obsessed as a kid.
Another example of f modern gaming! They’ll destroy the industry that took 30 years to build. The quicker the incumbents die off the better.
I’ll celebrate every dev closure until we have a complete reset.
$40 for a bad remaster and it's digital only too? No thanks MS.
I did recently watch this BBC archive about video games and the industry from back in 2004, and it does seem that the promise has not been fulfilled.
https://youtu.be/RdvXlBDWH3s?is=17cSjjTE2z-IPRwy
Charging $40 for the barest of barebones ports of a game and then having the audacity to charge for the original DLC all over again instead of rolling into the relaunch... setting the full, low effort package of a 16-year old game at $70, pricier than many actual remasters and remakes...
Yup, it's Activision Blizzard alright. Apalling stuff.
They didn't release this for gamers. This is to capitalize on current trends. Nothing more.
@Max_the_German I disagree, as the review makes it clear what the price point at review time is, so readers can take that into account if they see it much cheaper in a year or two’s time when they see the review.
So it’s relevant for a review at release.
Sooooo just as bad as when it released.
@CaptainBiscuitJeans This ended with Sharma taking over. Xbox is now fully antigamer and the industry would be better with their departure along with a full reset. Lets drop sony and msft and go back to sega, nintendo, and a random third party, perhaps atari.
The beauty of physical gaming! This review has made me nostalgic for the good times I had playing this as a teenager. I’ll grab a PS3 copy next time I’m in CEX for £2.
@Max_the_German absolutely agreed. Not a fair review imo.
Absolute garbage anyone who buys this needs there head seeing to
Normally I’m a sucker for COD and defend it as objectively as possible. But these ports and the pricing of them is just a bridge too far. Even I won’t be touching these.
PushSquare Reviews and Comments never cease to amaze.
@shoeses that’s some high praise, thanks!
And all the normies rushed to the PS store to buy it digitally
Well I myself had a great blast from the past couple of games on those world at war zombie maps, under totem and der reise! Lots of fun, graphics are pony though which is a shame, it’s almost like we’re paying for a ps3 disc to go in the ps5, oh wait we can’t do that
Digital games are great aren’t they.
People are really missing the point with this release. It's giving PlayStation owners parity with what is currently available on XBOX. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Double pack with Blops 2, all DLC for both at least at 4k60fps for £20 and I would have bought.
Otherwise, no sale.
It's so funny seeing people Twitter that were all up in arms about Sony not wanting to make physical games anymore only for some of them to immediately cave in the moment they rereleased BLOPS 1 and 2 on the PS5 (while still having to repurchase the DLCs). If that report about Sony not being worried about the controversy because their consumers will still eat it up anyways is true, then honestly I can't even be mad at Sony here. These people really have no backbone on anything they stand lmao
Hopefully they'll get the Turtles skins added into this one soon, because I don't see a reason anybody will play it otherwise
I loved the original game back in the day and still own it on Xbox, but the multiplayer there has been completely ruined by hackers—not to mention how hard it is to find active lobbies for objective modes like CTF. For the last three nights, my daughter and I have been playing TDM and CTF entirely hacker-free. We’ve already put in multiple hours and absolutely got our money's worth. I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how easy it has been to join a game and I do hope it continues to be active for a while yet.
I mean! Who really cares about call of duty anyways! Activision has been flogging a dead horse for more than a generation now
Call of do do. It's been the same for years, and you all keep paying for it. Now you're like moths to a flame to this pile too, says Activision. But at least you buy digital so you don't.even own it.
This gen has really taken gaming away.
Wowzers money for old rope, with no tangible improvements It's the worst version, smaller player base, it's pay-to-play online with plus requirement
Will wait for the inevitable PS Plus inclusion
Well it's a cheap work nostalgia buy.
Aka I don't buy popular games I already have, the games are decent but sure I play them like everyone else, the singleplayer, never zombies as didn't notice or care and multiplayer what offline yes a bit, not much, I've played it as much as Killzone bot matches aka very little. XD
Wasn't that big on anyway or don't care for. It's a waste but companies know audiences are weak to their nostalgia/emotions. Typical.
I had more fun with Singularity a few months ago with it's COD feel and good mechanics then I have a single COD game ever. XD
Same with other shooters of PS3/360/Wii with Gears feel but more compelling mechanics. The left behind games were more fun and the 'major games' shooters, racing, etc. are all easy to tell why audiences are after what they are. I seek gameplay and the plain ones sell, says a lot.
I'd never support this at all. No matter the state of a series or excuses like this.
I only bought the Wii or Wii U versions cheap within the last few years (so not 1st hand but 2nd hand market of course) out of curiosity and they are outdated so like i care. It's their features I cared about and to fill out my collection of those. Otherwise I wouldn't support a modern easy excuse like this.
Activision wouldn't put out the PS2/OG Xbox versions at all or COD Classic again but they would Black Ops 1 and 2, what a joke. Typical of audiences and companies though. Glad I got my 2nd hand PS2 copies or PS3 COD 3 or Road to Victory. Don't have World at War PS2 yet. Still. I care to look at them, not play them, they are 'fine'. But I'm not nostalgic for the series at all. There are better games out there not just oh the 1st shooter everyone thinks of regardless of it's quality over the years. I don't care for the series.
What’s more depressing is that this sad excuse for a port isn’t helping to show Sony the error of there ways…the casuals have been lapping this crap up, so much for no disc no buy
Like I said in the other article, it definitely feels a little scummy on Activision's part, but I suppose that's not too surprising. Like, for the discount price, I kinda get it, especially if you have deep nostalgia or have never played these two games.
At full price (of $40 each), for this quality though, I don't get it. And the fact that they're selling a season pass for 14+ year old games is so sickening to me.
@get2sammyb I mean no disrespect towards Liam and certainly commend him working his ass off as you said, but a couple of bullet points and complaining about the price don't make for an "excellent" review, if one at all.
I certainly agree about it being way, way overpriced, but it should not be the main talking point. I for one have never played this game and come away knowing just as much as I did beforehand.
Lastly, the point regarding the lack of graphical improvements is moot, as it was revealed and always advertised as a port, not a remaster like COD 4 was.
So yeah, not a good review at all.
Terrible port for the cost. I'm disappointed and I will not get burnt again (I will). What I find a little vulgar is I went to Pure Xbox article about this port as I was think that Sharma may have just said something like "I don't care if it isnt quite ready, just release it we need the money" and one of the writers at PX said in the comments " Xbox is going to make an absolute fortune on them though". Horrid.
What a pointless remaster and they didn't even include the DLC with it so what happens if you bought it for PS3 back in the day can you use it for this version
Coming from someone who hasn't played these, I'm of multiple minds when it comes to the score/price. While I think $40 is too steep and the fact that the DLC maps aren't included is crazy, a 4/10 for a beloved game does seem harsh. The game, I assume, is still good. I'd rather have the ability to play it on modern consoles than not. That said, if you already owned the PS3 version, you should have gotten this for free.
No one should be surprised after the last week. This is the thin end of the wedge. Digital games, at a single price point with one place to purchase from. Zero competition. Zero choice.
Pass.
i would say its good for people who either never played the game when it originally came out , or they wanted to go back and play it again , also 3rd party games always had issues on the ps3 back then.
Honestly, this is just a bad review imo.
Most people who purchased this knew what they were getting - it was never promoted as a remake or remaster, simply porting the games over.
The player count speaks volumes tbh.
I spent $65 to get this game to be not able to play offline there's absolutely no way to add bots unless you playing combat training i wish there was a way for me to get back my money
