Re: Stare Wistfully at The Last of Us Online PS5 Multiplayer Menu Screen

Wilforce

Is it really all that different from any other multiplayer game? It’s a little weird that the main screen is called lobby, but it’s basically the same content as Fortnite and CoD. Seems like they put everything up front where they anticipate players to be looking for information. Not much to work with here, but disappointing since it was something i was looking forward to.

Re: 'Florida Joker' Wants a Massive Rockstar Payday for Allegedly Using Likeness in GTA 6

Wilforce

Sorry, but the Clown Prince of Crime needs to sit back down. Rockstar’s character may be an homage, but falls in line with parody - they look nothing alike. Many of the situations are clearly parody. There’s only one that I noted in the trailer that may not be considered parody, simply because the likeness and camera angling are a bit too uncanny, but even then it wouldn’t be worth pursuing because of the likelihood of being classified parody.

Re: Sonic Superstars (PS5) - A Solid 2D Sonic Game, If You Play It Solo

Wilforce

@NotTelevision Hookshot Media have a scoring guide that is used by all of their outlets. A 7 is classified as “a good game with more positives than negatives, these titles are not average in our eyes.“ While there is an editorial aspect to the reviews, I don’t believe they’ve done a good job justifying the score granted… Tough bosses and multiplayer didn’t meet the reviewer’s needs? The criticism is fair, but weighs too heavily on the overall score.

Re: Sonic Superstars (PS5) - A Solid 2D Sonic Game, If You Play It Solo

Wilforce

@Bentleyma If we follow that logic then every recent 2D Mario game should be a 6/10 because the co-op is cramped, limited, and chaotic. Mario Maker 2 is the most egregious, featuring a convoluted local co-op mode while favoring the online play. Part of the fun in co-op games like this though is just how chaotic they can be. I think the co-op aspects are weighing too heavily on this score. Taken at its word, this review should be a 7 because the grievance toward co-op is minor at best.

Re: Sonic Superstars (PS5) - A Solid 2D Sonic Game, If You Play It Solo

Wilforce

@PlayStationGamer3919 I agree. I’ve long been critical of Push Square’s rating system as they make their criteria public, but they frequently rate games below the category. To strike a game because the reviewer didn’t enjoy the co-op feels short sighted, particularly since this is how Sonic games have always handled co-op. Perhaps a 7, but a 6 implies that the flaws distracted from the overall experience.

Re: Xbox Insinuates It Bought Bethesda to Block Starfield PS5 Console Exclusivity

Wilforce

@get2sammyb Thanks for reminding me about that. I didn’t remember the original trailers featuring that note. It’s a fair point, but doesn’t invalidate MS’s perspective that they were in 3rd place, which is the case they’re trying to make. It just illustrates that they were behind in getting the latest, greatest games to come to their console. The entire situation doesn’t justify Starfield’s console exclusivity - though after the latest demonstration I think I’ll stick to No Man’s Sky.

Re: Well-Loved Co-Op Shooter Sequel Helldivers 2 Targets PS5, PC This Year

Wilforce

I have been thoroughly enjoying my time in the Starship Troopers paid play test on Steam. When the trailer for this first started I was so excited to get a console port… only to have my expectations crushed. I have mixed feelings… this feels like the exact opposite of Starship Troopers (ST). ST is a parody of communism this is a parody of Democracy. From the trailer, Helldivers does a much better job embracing the core mythos than the ST game. I’ll give it a shot, but this looks like it’s up to 4 players, which really isn’t a match for the chaos of 16 player co-op in ST.

Re: Publisher Take-Two Claims It's 'Not Seeing Pushback' From Players on $70 Price Tag

Wilforce

Not sure what metrics they’re using, but I have most definitely suspended most game purchases until they hit the bargain bin 1 month after launch - may be an exaggeration, but far to many games receive a $20+ discount after mere weeks on the market. Perhaps they’re not seeing the hit because retailers are voluntarily taking a hit to their profits to move product and the games have already left Take Two’s inventory.

Re: Random: Final Fantasy 14's Yoshi-P Couldn't Stop Playing Zelda During PS5, PS4 MMO's Test Stream

Wilforce

There is a fine line between genius and insanity, and Yoshi-P is certainly there. If anything, this is beneficial for Square Enix because he drew attention to an entire stream that would’ve otherwise been overlooked by media outlets. I’d be in the executive suite laughing my butt off because even in doing nothing related to my game company’s game he still managed to get the company publicity despite actively using a competitor’s product.

It’s easy to sit back and arm chair judge, but it’s not our industry or company, which everyone watching the stream knows full well they’re probably doing the same exact thing while watching the stream because it’s a damn good game. This stream isn’t for casual consumers. It’s for people heavily ingrained in the FFXIV culture and are intimately attuned to the inner workings of the game. I’d judge more harshly if this were a state of play, but this is a niche, casual stream.

Re: Standalone Harry Potter Quidditch Game Announced

Wilforce

I give it six months. WB killed Multiversus beta after six months despite already collecting money, and many more F2P games lasted less than that. Harry Potter while popular, is not sufficient to save a niche game with the target demographic: Harry Potter fans who are gamers and are open to F2P multiplayer fictional sports experiences. Compare this to Kart Rider Drift, which really isn’t a bad game overall, but hasn’t captured a player base sufficient enough to justify the various league/competitive ranks resulting in a major revision of the reward tiers mid-season.

Re: Wild Hearts Lethal Blossom Update Adds New Monsters, Gear on PS5

Wilforce

@Blacksmith1985 PC sales are estimated in in the low 100k. Weekly sales would coincide with a similar figure on PS5 in Japan alone. Since the west don’t post exact numbers it’s hard to say how many actually sold, but I’d guesstimate around 500k total sales. The game had a rocky launch with a high volume of glitches on consoles, which my understanding is that the Xbox Series S has it the worst, while many issues on Xbox remain unresolved. Many of the issues on PS5 have since been resolved.

Currently WH has roughly 2k active players on PC at 13:00 UTC so it’s more popular among Japanese players, and a trough of about 800 players during both European and American prime times.

By comparison, Monster Hunter World currently has ~13k players, and MH Rise has ~10k players on Steam.

One issue with using Steam as a litmus for Wild Hearts though is that Koei is not known for producing hit PC games, so it’s likely that the console versions sold more than the PC version.

Re: Out Today, This PS5, PS4 Hot Wheels Game Requires a Toy Car to Play

Wilforce

WiFi option has some latency issues on mobile and PS5. The car doesn’t seem to swap access points on a mesh network and appears to remain connected to the closest access point after first connection of the session. Mobile appears to have a more noticeable delay than PS5 when maneuvering.

The grind to unlock cars is tedious - you can do quests or grind stunts. Quests are faster, but then you need to do activities you may not want to do at the time. Stunt mode is not efficient to grind when trying to unlock other cars. I appreciate that in stunt mode you can freely swap between the cars you’ve unlocked.

Compared to Mario Kart Live, this game is a lot more versatile. Swapping different cars noticeably affect the handling of IRL toy car. Additionally, not everything is focused on racing - the other game types add diversity to replayability.

The stands that hold the goals are now plastic, but the actual signs are still cardboard. The actual vehicle feels like a heavier quality plastic compared to the Mario Kart vehicles, and the car sits slightly higher off the ground compared to Mario. Hot Wheels Rift Rally is definitely a more mature offering of the two, and feels like Velan took what they learned and improved upon it for Wild Rally.

Re: Sony Is Acting Unfairly Against Xbox in Japan, US Congress Members Say

Wilforce

@Kevw2006 I’ve tried to find the terms of that deal, but they have not been made public. What I have found is an FAQ from Bungie indicating that they intend to continue self-publishing games. However, that is a statement provided by Bungie, not Sony… Since Sony owns Bungie, they can essentially do whatever they want in the long term. That FAQ could just as easily be thrown out once there is a change in leadership or on a whim from the Sony executive board. It is an olive branch that Sony could just as easily snap, the same way Microsoft did with Bethesda.

To add on… There is some legalese that identifies Bungie as an Independent Subsidiary, which Microsoft uses the same definition for their subsidiaries. While it’s true that there is a level of autonomy for an independent subsidiary, that autonomy is just as easily derailed if the parent company becomes disenfranchised. Sony could simply vote out the board and vote in people favorable or withhold supplemental funding.
