Re: In Unsurprising News, Even More Xbox Ports Are Allegedly En Route to PS5

TrollOfWar

@lazarus11 Does it really matter if Arrowhead is a 3rd party developer when Sony owns the "Helldivers" IP? Insomniac Games was a 3rd party developer at the time where the first 10 "Ratchet & Clank" games, "Resistance" 1-3 and the 1st "Marvel's Spider-Man" were developed, still everyone considers those games as "1st party games". "Until Dawn" is owned by Sony, Supermassive Games had to rename the sequel to "The Quarry". Sony owns the "Demon's Souls" IP, despite Fromsoft creating it. In a similar way "Pokemon" is a 1st party Nintendo IP despite Game Freak (a 3rd party developer) developing the games.

"Helldivers" is for Sony a 1st party game, they decide where the game is published, not Arrowhead. Since "Helldivers 2" is one of the few successful live-service games that Sony has, from a business perspective it makes sense to expand the game to other platforms to increase the revenue. Will likely also release on the Switch 2 if it's technically feasible.

@lazarus11 Helldiverss 2 is actually a 1st party Sony game because Sony own the "Helldivers" IP and PlayStation is publishing the games on other platforms. See: https://trademarks.justia.com/860/42/helldivers-86042209.html

"Spider-Man" (the comic book and video game character) on the other hand is not a Sony IP. It's owned by Marvel, that's why the game is called "Marvel's Spider-Man". Sony only owns the Spider-Man movie rights. I guess it's understandable that Xbox players would like to play Spider-Man, the games are great and there are Spider-Man fans on all platforms. There's no harm in them hoping for a port of the Spider-Man games.

@Balaam_ I would personally like those games to be ported as those 2 are fairly good games, but I fear it's unlikely for those games to be ported at the moment.

For Sunset Overdrive Insomniac Games would have to have free capacities, but they are busy with Wolverine, Spider-Man 3, X-Men and Ratchet & Clank.

Same with Remedy's Quantum Break. Remedy is currently busy with Control 2, Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes and additional work on FBC.

@rjejr I finished South of Midnight a few days ago, the gameplay feels a lot like a linear early PS2 3D action platforming gane (in a good way), with linear levels, collectibles, easy platforming challenges and combat in closed arenas. Some might feel it's outdated, but personally I enjoyed it. The visual design is also quite interesting.

@UltimateOtaku91 "So realistically what would you call the next generational leap? Because I know for a fact playing the next Playstation/Xbox consoles is going to feel exactly the same as playing the current consoles but with more frames per second and faster loading."

Good point. Just wanted to add 2 things:
1. Graphical fidelity is expensive: The more details the graphics of a game have the more people it needs to create those assets, prolonging the development time and costs. There is a limit where that becomes unprofitable.
2. Next generation will probably have a similar cross-generation phase as this one. With raising hardware prices and free-to-play live-service games keeping players on their current systems, many developers will design their games for current and next gen hardware.

@Anya-chan Final Fantasy has always been a franchise which was more dominant on the PlayStation ever since FF7 released. In case of Final Fantasy 15, 10% of the 10 million sold units were on Xbox, so that means without Xbox Square Enix would have sold 1 million less. In case of Final Fantasy 13 apparently 39% were on Xbox.

These releases don't need to have "impressive results" in sales, as long as they are profitable in the end and earn enough money for the pulishers to fund the next projects and keep shareholders happy.

Following your logic, Bethesda shouldn't have bothered releasing Skyrim and Fallout 3 on PS3, since Oblivion on PS3 probably didn't sell as well as on PC and X360? Luckily that didn't happen.

"This always been my opinion on xbox players tastes and to this day is still the same"

You can't expect 33 million Xbox Series S|X owners to have the same taste. They have different tastes the same way the PlayStation players have different tastes. But feel free to hold your opinion if that makes you happy. 😁

@Rich33 "First you have casual gamers who do not have massive libraries, except FTP or games like COD where a new one arrives every year; and as I have described above can almost exhibit a herd mentality (what 1 friend / family member buys, others will buy as well), with very little needed to appeal to them - ie I have firsthand experience of casual gamers choosing PS5 just because thats the only place to play a Spiderman game, or the next GOW game."

Well as I said, most of the casual people will follow their friends to a platform to play those free-to-play and COD, GTA live-service games. But you are right, Spider-Man is one of the top 3 most popular comic book characters worldwide. Having him exclusively on PlayStation did probably influence many people to choose PlayStation. Good for Sony, not so good for Spider-Man fans without a PlayStation. Imagine if the Batman Arkham Trilogy would have been Xbox exclusive, that would have been terrible for Batman fans on PlayStation.

"But, if I thought Sony were moving towards multiplatform like XBox, and I could get their games more reliably on PC, or if PS6 does not have the hardware to ensure >60fps is the norm for the entire generation, then the fence might tip over to PC for me."

Being able to choose your favorite gaming system, where to play your favorite games, based on the system's features rather than exclusive games is a bad thing? Wouldn't you be happier if you could have a PC where you decide the a game's frame rate and could play all the games you like, rather than a console which has it's hardware limits?

@Anya-chan A more likely reason why many small Japanese developers don't put their games on Xbox is that they have better connections to Japanese companies like Nintendo and Sony, and since Xbox isn't selling well in Japan, those developers don't want to spend the effort on releasing their games on Xbox.

Yes, Halo, Gears and Forza are popular on Xbox (just like they seem to be popular and the most requested games on this PlayStation community site), but Xbox players just as well like Japanese games if those games are good.

How are the Xbox players to blame if those Japanese developers don't release their games on Xbox in the first place?

Re: Helldivers 2 Xbox Announcement Prompts Avalanche of Spider-Man Port Begging

@Anya-chan Let's assume Final Fantasy 16 sols 200k units on Xbox at $50 (though there's also a $80 complete edition). That's 50 x 200k is $10 millions minus $3 millions (30%) for the platform and minus $1 million for porting to Xbox. That's around $6 millions in Square Enix' pockets just for releasing it on Xbox, money which they didn't have before. It will slowly sell more over time probably being closer to 500k units sold.

I often saw people here claim that Xbox players "simply don't like jp games in general", but do you have any evidence to back that claim? Fromsoft games are doing well on Xbox, Atlus only started releasing their RPGs on Xbox in 2022 and people seem to enjoy them on all platforms. Sega is releasing the Like A Dragon games on Xbox as well. Capcom games are popular on Xbox. Square Enix kept their main RPG releases exclusive on PlayStation for almost a decade, of course the hardcore JRPG fans who care about Final Fantasy had to choose a PlayStation. Xbox gamers are just like PlayStation gamers - they're gamers. If a good game releases on Xbox people will buy it.

Re: Helldivers 2 Xbox Announcement Prompts Avalanche of Spider-Man Port Begging

@Rich33 "But the real damage would be to Sony's brand, and potentially PS6 sales. Releasing even older tentpole exclusives on XBox hardware just blurs the lines, suggesting that it doesn't matter if you buy an XBox you can still play Sony games, which is the last thing Sony wants, particularly as the next XBox is probably due out before PS6."

I don't think millions of PlayStation players will abandon their PlayStation consoles, including their backward compatible PS game library, their PS friends, save files, trophies and peripheral devices, and start from scratch on a different platform, just because PlayStation are releasing some titles on other systems. Especially since next gen again will have a lengthy cross-gen phase and PlayStation players won't miss out on any console games until the release of the PS6.

If PlayStation games on other platforms (like Steam) were damaging the PlayStation brand then you wouldn't see the sales numbers of the PS5 hold up with the numbers of the PS4. PlayStation is the "standard gaming console" brand worldwide, people will continue buying PlayStation.

@Anya-chan @Nei @theSpectre @AgentMantis If your comment about "Final Fantasy 16 not selling on Xbox" is based on that 22000 number provided by Alinea Analytics, that report has been somewhat debunked. That sales estimate is based on the number of Xbox store reviews. More realistic numbers are between 100k and 300k.

Good games sell well, even on Xbox. The Xbox playerbase has similar interests as the PlayStation. While sales numbers are lower due to less than half of the PlayStation install base, Xbox is still profitable for most publishers. Games like Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 also do well on Xbox.

Final Fantasy 16 released at a terrible time on Xbox, in the heels of Oblivion Remastered, Clair Obscur E33 and Doom: The Dark Ages. There was no hype build up for the Xbox release and it released at full price ($50) on Xbox, where during the same week it had a discount ($32.50) on the PlayStation store. Also based on the word of mouth reputation, Final Fantasy 16 received a mixed reception on PlayStation 5 two years ago, with many people stating that it's not a true Final Fantasy RPG, more of an action game.

Taking Death Stranding on Xbox as an example: Kojima announced on Twitter/X that the game has sold 19 million units on all platforms on the day of the Xbox release last November. At the end of March 2025 they announced 20 million players. Death Stranding did well on Xbox despite being a 5 year old game.

Re: Helldivers 2 Xbox Announcement Prompts Avalanche of Spider-Man Port Begging

TrollOfWar

@UltimateOtaku91 Based on your comment about "Helldivers not being a true first party game".

Following that logic Spider-Man is long overdue to release on Xbox.
1. Insomniac Games was a 3rd party studio during the developed and the released, and only joined the PlayStation studios a year later.
2. Spider-Man is not a Sony owned IP. It's in the title, it's called "Marvel's Spider-Man", not "Sony's Spider-Man"

"Helldivers" is just as much a Sony owned 1st party IP as "Pokemon" is a Nintendo owned IP. "Game Freak" the developer of "Pokemon" is a 3rd party studio. Sony PlayStation decided to release Helldivers 2 on Xbox, no one else.
