Looks sick, i love Skydance and this basically looks there version of Dark Souls/Shadow of the Colussus. Looking forward to playing this on the new headset and not a comprimised Quest version...
The Persistance was absolutely fantastic, such an addictive and underrated title. The work the studio did on that, plus there former history as Psygnosis, has me very excited for Horizon VR.
Ive earned 4 free months of PC Game Pass after being off there for a while, so time to catch on stuff i missed:
PC Game Pass
Guardians of the Galaxay
What a ridculously awesome game. I burned through the first 3 chapters last night. Captures the movies to a tee, has fantastic narrative, witty dialogue and a surprsingly enjoyable combat system. Good stuff.
Midnight Fight Club
Love a good beat em up and this one is a really fun variation on the formula with meaty skill tree. Narrative is thin, but the combat is where its at, too much fun to flawlessly take out a room full of goons with swift style.
Quest 2
Thrill of the Fight
If you want a VR boxing sim, this is the one. Creed and Knockout League have fun moments but cant compare. Yeah production is cheap, but the combat is a really satisfying and challenging experience..its not surprsing its developed by an actual boxer.
@Bleachedsmiles thats intresting, i had similar feelings with Inpatient, i really dug the tense build up but yh, the finale soured it for me enough, thought couldve been really special but they dropped it. I was lucky with RE8, they anouced the VR version after i got an hr in, so have paused it, and will start again in VR. Im with you about Horizon, but the one factor behind it that has me sold is the dev, Firespirite. They did the absoultely fantastic VR game The Persistance. Its probably my favorite PSVR title, and has me hopeful they will be able to provide the necessary meaty experience behind the flash. Anyhow, only reviews will only tell, i can see why ppl are skeptical about getting day one, but for me im more then hyped, the tech is truly heads above Quest 2, and im tired of the hit and miss experience ive had with PCVR.
@Bleachedsmiles yh Inpatient had a few solid momements (and an awesome midpoint jump scare) but was overall disappointing for me, felt like a major wasted oppertunity...espcially when the plot left the cell. Im curious, what worked for you about it? Yeah, Switchback doesnt solely sell me on day 1 purchase, but RE8, Horizon and being a VR entusiast, certainly do.
An Alien game in the same vein as DS or RE sounds great, and a lot better use of the IP over the odd multiplayer ones we're getting recently. Still really depends on the dev though.
@KaijuKaiser i would argue as well that incrediable cinema has existed in China for decades as well, from arthouse, to cutting edge action that essentially changed cinema. I'm in agreement that it is a totalarian and suffocating system, but that does not mean worthy creative product can not emerge either...just not easily.
Im really intriguiged by the sneak shop listing that Walking Dead S & S is getting a bundle with a PSVR2 version of the first game. Fingers crossed its an indivdual free upgrade, i would love to replay the original (without the janky camera tracking) before tackling the sequel.
Im fine with the launch list personally, ill have Horizon, and also VR versions of No Mans Sky and RE8, im set.
Went in there on 1100am uk time at the dot and grabbed me the Horizon bundle without issue...its going to be a long wait till Feb 22nd, hope everyone who really wanted one was successful today.
Ive had this title in my library forever and never gave a it a spin, will be nice to finally try it with the fresh new headset...bring on the pre-orders tmr!
@Ravix im currently stuck into Forbidden West and am loving it (and I found the first one overrated mind). If want you to get stuck into a stunning fantasy world, its a great choice.
@Judal27 Route B will be less exciting since it repeats a lot from the perspective of a less capable character, but dont worry, route C basically flips everything on its head and is a proper final act. Such a fantastic game, glad your enjoying...
@kyleforrester87 thanks for the advice, ill stay with it then, i tend to be sceptical of dlc, but so far this feels like a geniune continuation. How long did it take for you to finish? Ive heard some say 4 hrs, others say 9 hrs...
PS5 Horizon Zero Dawn This one has got its hooks in me despite me being fairly neutral on Zero Dawn, also i was burnt out on openworlds but this landscape is so beautiful and intresting that i love exploring, the sidequest are well thought out and meaty too, the combat is really crunchy and streamlined. Most importantly, the main plot is really gripping, so keeps me intriguiged for the next cut scene.
Switch Diablo 3 Finally crossed the threshold on the main campaign and am on the Reaper of Souls expansion...i usually dont bother with DLC but this one seems pretty legit, we'll see how long i stay with it...its been fun but am ready to move on. For anyone who played, is it worth hanging on till the end?
It should be a customisable option in the Settings, simple.
Im in the middle of Horizon 2 and its very OTT, its even making Aloy annoying, wish i could just turn it off in this case - the Settings have a great variety of options...but not this.
@Weebleman congrats on getting that far, thats a tough one. Good news though, the final boss is not that complex to beat. Best of luck, the lights at the end of the tunnel...
PS5
Horizon Forbidden West
Time to get into this one and wrap the firstparty backlog. Good lord is the world gorgeous, am enjoying. Really cant remember any of the side characters, but think the plot and sidequest have my attention better in this installment. Gameplay is still slick as ever.
Quest 2
Journey of the Gods
Cute adventure title, that plays a little like old school Zelda in vr (with Wind Waker artstyle). Fun so far, if abit repitive.
Doom (1993)
I set it up to play the orginal Doom nativly on the quest, with Dr Beefs incrediable mod. Also doing it with Map of Chaos and Brutal Doom mods, n it is ridculously fun...highly recommended, and not too hard to fix up.
@AdamNovice i get your stance but disagree for a few reasons, heres why:
1. Who says they wouldve revealed it with a screen cap during a State of Play? Sony have revealed games with just animated titles (e.g GoW Ragnarok) or brief cinematics (e.g Wolverine) so its not reason to dismiss it wouldnt have been shown in some minimal format. This game has been speculated for a while, why reveal it randomly this week? Maybe London was tired of being secrative and negotiated to at least reveal it at some level. We're both speculating, but you got to admit its a little strange...
2. Just because SH and RE had their own showcases is not grounds to write this off either. In fact, its pretty common a game gets its big reveal at a publisher event, then gets a more detailed follow up. Just off the top of my head, the RE4 remake breifly revealed itself in a teaser at a State of Play, then had a more detailed trailer (with gameplay) at a Capcom showcase a week later. Not sure why that couldn't have been the case with SH2 reveal here. Also the fact that the RE showcase had the opening animations of a State of Play plus Sony quietly involved in the presentation, but then no ps blog post or mention of it, seems pretty odd, and leans that there was some linkage at some point.
3. Since when does Ragnarok solely have its own marketing campaign? Its appeared at 3 sony showcases, not to mention was revealed at one.
Lastly, Sony have held plenty of SoP with non-exclusive stuff. Once again, RE 4 remake was revealed at the 2nd to last one and thats third party, before that they held one strictly around Hogwarts Legacy, and thats coming to Switch and Xbox too. Heck, the very last SoP revealed Yakuza Ishin! remake, which is also third party.
Dont misunderstand me, im not saying a cancelled showcase can be fully attributed to the Acti-Blizz buyout, however, personally find it weird to completly call it garbage...theres too much coincidence here. To each there own...
@theMEGAniggle i agree with you too that it wasnt the sole reason, just thought it was odd they had such determined kneejerk reaction that there was zero truth to it, espcially when theyve reported on thinner rumors with a neutral or even hopeful tone..guess everyone is getting tired of 'leaker' culture.
So, this past week...finally a reveal on London Studios long rumored online project, a detailed trailer for PS5 exclusive FF16, a surprise trailer reveal for PS5 (timed) exclusive Silent Hill 2 remake, a lengthy gameplay trailer for RE4 remake (that sony has an exclusive marketing deal with, and subtly hosted the showcase itself), today also a GoW Ragnarok launch trailer..look at the facts and tell me, why did Push Square dimiss the cancelled PS showcase rumor as ridiculous garbage?
As much as i enjoyed Death Stranding, we didnt see an influx of 'strand' games flood in as Kojima assumed. Ill play whatever he makes, but take his words with a pinch of salt.
@Zuljaras fair enough. Sekiro is worth a spin, as it flips the script on the gameplay and makes for unique take. Demon Souls might be weird to go to after playing all the others as its a bit more basic...me personally i loved returning to it, but i also have big nostalgia. Anyhow, hope you dig Elden Ring, i still have yet to play it but heard its the best.
Well after 4 releases, they will be searching for content to fill out their remake instalments that run parallel to new entires. A proper remake of 1 is probably priority, then theres only reall CV left (they act like 5 & 6 dont exisit anyhow)...so im sure it will become a possibilty. I hope so, its the only entry i never gave a go.
I mean this was always going to Microsoft's end game with the Acti-Bliz purchase; get game pass on everything and anything via COD demand. By making it exclusive to their subscription service, Sony would finally comply...however that also looks like a monoply.
Happy to see Lord of Shadows return, i never completed it on the old service and was bummed to see it go. Might start the prescripyion once i wrap my backlog...
@Tasuki i finished SotN a couple months ago for the first time on PS4 and it was incrediable. I know thats preaching to choir, but i was worried it would be dated, plus i prefer Metroidvanias on handheld...wasnt disappointed in the least and was literally hooked from begining to end.
@Would_you_kindly nice work, im just on normal, how did you think it stacks up against the recent titles? I keep hearing its not as strong in comparison, but im enjoying so far.
PS5 Resident Evil 3 Remake Just started the first hour and its as slick and polished as i could imagine. Never played the original (although have played 1, 2 & 4 multiple times), so its awesome to finally see what went down in this entry.
Switch Diablo 3 Still grinding this one out here and there. Had to up the difficulty cause it gets easy after a couple of level ups. Fun, brainless gameplay...thats about it.
Quest 2 Lies Beneath What a kick ass game! Incrediable artstyle, intresting plot, creepy atmosphere, and juicy gameplay. This title is way too overlooked...maybe a PSVR2 port would amend that?
Good lord, why? Platinum is great at making a specific type of game, they need to team up with more visionaries like Yoko Taro, to give us excellent stuff like Nier: Automata...not this cynical, souless product.
Yep, and for someone who was excited for a sequel about a decade ago, that has since dried up.. espcially since Ancel left. It was his passion project, what really is the point of this anymore?
Remake the series, the narrative is so rich but the production quality always varied from game to game, would be great to have a polished recap of the franchise before continuing it.
PS5 Horizon Forbiden West PSN finally discounted it last week so picked it up. Brings all the triple A polish expected from Playstation Studios and am enjoying the story. Found the first one good, if not great...this one feels about the same so far.
Switch Diablo 3 Coming to the end of Act 2. Play it on mute while wife is watching Love Island. Not much to say, am enjoying hacking through enemies and levelling up...its starting to feel a little same-y, so might take a break.
Quest 2 Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy Edge Went back into this to finish Part 2 of the campaign. Coming off RE4 VR, which had incrediably polished user experience and item placement, this really feels cluttered and frustrating, espcially when your in a firefight and guns wont pick up. The game has nice production, and looks amazing on the quest, but is let down by those issues slightly...hopefully they'll amend for the PSVR2 version.
@PegasusActual93 exactly. Its been the only way Ive been able to bring down the nintendo first party stuff from their uniform 33 pound sales price. This will help put a dent in that 70 pound price tag from new releases on PSN hopefully.
PS4
Hong Kong Massacre
This is basically Hotline Miami meets Max Payne. Tough game, but once it clicks, you'll be stylishing wasting fools like no ones business. Just near the end, will finish tonight.
Switch
Planet Alpha
Overlooked platformer. Is bloody gorgeous, and an engaging and immersive title. Dead simple but really enjoying so far, sortve a hybird of Another World's setting with Limbo's playstyle.
Quest 2
Resident Evil 4 VR
The original is likely my favorite game ever made, of course its showing its age, but playing in VR completly refreshes it. Its easier, since you can aim and move, and dual wield, but hell if it isn't as fun, and possibly even better. Been having an absolute blast with it, would be great to see more same era games be ported to Quest 2...GTA San Andreas VR has shot up in my excitment book now.
