@Nickolaidas In the absence of lockdowns and the other preventative measures we would be at well over 1 million deaths globally by the end of this year with coronavirus.
@Mega-Gazz Won’t happen immediately. I would be surprised if you can play many new AAA games on the PC in 3 1/2 years time if you don’t have an NVMe SSD at least as fast as the one in the Xbox series X.
@LN78 I think this is going to be a case of if you want one you need to pre-order it. I expect it will be quite a long time before you can just walk into a shop and buy one the same day.
Persona 5 Royal. I’ve done all I can on the social front and are working my way through a floating palace wondering whether I’ve been able to change an inevitable fate from the previous game.
I’m surprised how many people here expect the same ingredients to lead to the same results. If the same ingredients were provided to my kitchen, The kitchen in my local restaurant and a factory with 1000 employees you would expect to different food to come out of it. Similarly a game built with dreams and unreal or a custom engine will be different even when the PS4 has the same amount of memory. Saying Skyrim did it therefore it is possible doesn’t necessarily mean everyone can achieve those results. Doubling the available memory will reduce the work required to achieve those results and therefore make it possible for more developer’s to do so.
Whilst I am tempted. I heard a rumour that PlayStation now rentals could override game that you had purchased through the PlayStation store. You could lose those games when the PlayStation now subscription ends or they leave the service. Do you know whether or not this is true?
@naruball The marginal cost of adding additional players to PlayStation now is negligible. Therefore regardless of whether it is overall profitable expanding the number of people playing it will make PlayStation more profitable.
The shrinkage that allows the PS5 to be produced also allows for a lower cost less power intensive PS4. I’m not saying it’s formal will necessarily change but they will be able to produce it more cheaply and therefore it would be sensible to pass the cost reduction on in order to get more sales from the budget end of the market.
If the price is in that range then I will be pre-ordering. Hopefully the shops will have reopened by then as I always prefer to pick my consoles up from the shop not waiting in for a delivery.
It’s always a risk working on someone else’s IP. It’s not uncommon for an IP holder to request changes to a game developer thinks is finished. Forcing them to crunch in the run-up to release. It’s not unheard of for an IP holder to cancel a 99% complete game at which point the developer or publisher is screwed. Never heard of a publisher releasing a 99% complete game without the IP holders permission before. Sounds like the professional reviews agree with the IP holder that the game is bad.
@wiiware I played bioshock on PS3. I can certainly relate to people having more PlayStation or Xbox games than Wii games. I ended up with 18 Wii games And 65 PS3 games.
Given the engine that it uses this is unsurprising. I’ll be more surprised to see games that use 1st-party engines that are not currently compatible with PC getting ported across.
Other than those you’ve already mentioned the are four games I’m interested in with dates this year. Trials at Mana on April 24 Sakura wars on April 28 Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen on May 26 Shantae and the Seven Sirens on May 28 Hopefully none of them get delayed....
@carlos82 Anyone making games for PC will have to set a minimum and recommended spec and leave some people behind. They will have to choose whether or not to support mechanical hard drives 50-100mb/s NAND SSD’s mine from 2018 is 560mb/s. Current NVME drives around 2000mb/s. If they require people to match for PS4 at 5500mb/s your right there would be no current PCs that would run it. I suspect games that don’t suport current generation consoles will also not support PCs with mechanical hard drives. Will have to wait-and-see to what extent those of us with the slower old SSDs also get left behind.
@Barryburton97 I’ve never spent more than £45 on the PS4 game day one and this is the first PS4 game with a physical release that I’ve not bought because of the price at launch.
Physical prices have been the highest any game I’ve ever seen. Probably due to the coronavirus restricting supply. I think I’ll wait till prices fall a bit.
Delay the game and put it onto discs after it’s finished. Scrambling to finish the voice acting after the games already on disc’s seems like a recipe for crunch and substandard work.
The DualSense looks like it will be a good controller. I dislike the default colour scheme but presumably it will be easy enough to get another pad that ascetically more to my liking. Most of the recoloured versions people PhotoShopped look good.
Interestingly only two out of the four past PlayStation consoles launched with a DualShock but all ended up with one.
@Nightcrawler71 If logistics isn’t back to normal by September then we are in for a recession worse than the 1930s. We should be well past the peak by then it just isn’t feasible to stay on lockdown for that long.
@GamingFan4Lyf History tells us that solutions that require developers to do extra work tend to lead to that system performing works on third-party games. That would probably be something that only Microsoft 1st party developers make proper use of.
It will be interesting to see whether it’s hard to go back to PS4 after the quality of life improvements on PS5. I suspect it won’t be. Remember that Games that loaded almost immediately of cartridges were replaced by games but streamed off CDs with long loading times and then games that needed to be installed to a hard disk bring in more lag. The quality of the games is the reason the PS1 succeeded over the N64. That’s also the reason I will go back to the PS4 if I want to play something that won’t run on the PS5.
I certainly continued playing PS2 Games after the PS3 came out and PS3 games after the PS4 came out. I even got the tomb Raider reboot on the PS3 rather than PS4 purely for reasons of cost.
@Matroska Normally you’d expect to get a game on release day if you pre-ordered it. Maybe a day or two early if you were lucky. Gradually delivering the game over a two week period before launch is a sign of logistical problems.
The logistical reasons are clearly the reason why it’s an indefinite delay. But if it’s not gone gold at this point it was probably due a short delay or a day one patch anyway.
Microsoft of listen to their customers and learn from their mistakes last time and produced a machine that is better than Sony in the area that we are decisive last time. Sony have listened to developers moved on and focused on the new technology the SSD. Only time will tell whether Microsoft is the general fighting the last battle or Sony is being arrogant.
@Hengist It certainly gets you more bang for your buck than trying to predict what the maximum demand will be and then building a solution for the worst case scenario.
@JJ2 I suppose it would be more accurate to describe what developers are doing as making sure they don’t give many instructions to the CPU. So that it doesn’t run fast and therefore a lot of power available to be shifted to the GPU.
It should only take PS5 three seconds to fill it’s RAM. The figure for the Xbox series X is 6 1/2 seconds. I don’t understand how a game could be optimised to take longer than that.

Wasn’t planning on getting it but lockdown is boring so I did in the end. Should keep me busy for a couple of weeks.
I guess I technically pre-ordered it but only did so after I’d heard other people had already received their copies. I got it one day before release day.

Re: PS5 Is Attracting an Obscene Amount of FUD Right Now
It won’t overheat because power is limited meaning developers will be forced to under clock either the CPU or GPU.
What seems to be happening in practice is that everyone is under clocking the CPU to the point where they don’t have to worry about power for the GPU.
