The Crew 2, due in part to outstanding ongoing support from publisher Ubisoft and developer Ivory Tower, remains relevant four years on from its original release. In fact, you could argue the game is getting better, with the latest season adding events inspired by Formula Drift World Champion Chris Forsberg – it’s impressive just how packed the racer’s condensed US sandbox is with content.
On the PS5 and PS4 specifically, there’s a real dearth of arcade racers, and so The Crew 2 has particular appeal. On the Xbox, of course, you can simply play the Forza Horizon series – but Sony has failed to develop an exclusive alternative for its platforms, so it’s all down to third-parties to plug the gap. The announcement of a PS5, 60 frames-per-second patch for Ubi’s flagship racing franchise was well-received, then.
In fact, having dabbled in this sandbox on-and-off over the past couple of years, even we were excited. The Crew 2 is far from a perfect game, but its combination of disciplines – from biplanes to boats – and its massive map does carry an appeal. Considering just how committed Ivory Tower is to adding content, we downloaded the 60fps update the second it dropped.
The game, running at 30fps, never felt bad – in fact, it was one of those responsive kind of framerates that felt pretty good on the pad. But it’s 2022, and playing on PS5 has spoiled us, so we wanted that faster refresh rate. It’s important to note that this isn’t a native new-gen re-release, rather an update for the existing PS4 client, so no DualSense support or rapid SSD loading.
But, we’ve seen with other games like The Last of Us 2, that it’s possible to patch a PS4 game for the PS5, retaining image quality while doubling the framerate. That’s, ultimately, what we expected here – but the results are disappointing. You see, while The Crew 2 does achieve a pretty sturdy 60fps that feels great with its latest update, the graphics take a hit.
And we mean, a colossal hit.
We’re not pixel counters here at Push Square, but we’d be shocked if the game was even achieving 1080p – it looks like PS3-era presentation to us, milling around the 720p mark. If you expand the images in this article to their native size, you’ll see what we mean: these were all captured directly from our PS5 console with 60fps enabled. It looks like, with the greatest of respect, a Nintendo Switch port!
Now, you can still return to the Resolution mode, which runs at 30fps and maintains the visuals of the pre-patch release – but that defeats the point of the update. We expected Ivory Tower to leverage the added horsepower of the PS5 to retain the original PS4 Pro image quality at the doubled framerate, but it hasn’t even come close to achieving that. These are atrocious results!
Obviously, we don’t want to act like armchair developers, because we’ll never understand the complications involved in issuing an update like this. All we know is that other publishers have managed to update their PS4 games to provide high resolution visuals at double the framerate on PS5. For whatever reason, The Crew 2 has not achieved that, and it’s an enormous shame for a popular game!
Do you have any interest in returning to The Crew 2, and do you think Ivory Tower will be able to fix these disappointing resolution issues on PS5? Smear the Vaseline good and thick in the comments section below.
The texture on that triceratops is shameful.
@MFTWrecks In their defence, it's meant to be like a "model" triceratops. But yes.
@get2sammyb A model made with Playdoh, apparently.
I refuse to believe they had no choice but to hit the visuals to get 60fps on PS5, seems like a very thrown together 60fps.
I guess it's a good thing that I'll try this game on PS+
Why would you mention Forza Horizon? I don't see Purexbox mentioning MS isn't capable of creating SP action adventure game for 20 years..
Also, as a matter of fact, Crew 2 has same visual fidelity problems on Series consoles and Purexbox ain't even mentioning that.
May be some kind of patch error? I recall some of the early SnowRunner patches on PS4 destroyed the games resolution to the point it was unplayable, sub HD and certainly under 720p. I posted comments to the review as the game was much worst than it's launch version a couple of patches in. They fixed in later updates though.
Just booted it up to give it a try. Uninstalled it pretty quickly. You're right on the money when you say it's of similar clarity to PS3-era titles. I find it very odd that it can't hit 4k, or at least 1440p at 60fps considering it was never exactly pushing boundaries on last-gen machines. Even the 4k looks pretty grimey. Very disappointed 😔
@Cikajovazmaj Does one mention of a non-Sony game really get you so rallied up? I think it is a good comparison.
That resolution is shockingly low. Surely there's a better way of doing this?
They would've gotten more players back, and new ones too, if they'd made a native PS5 application. It would've shown up on the store as new so they could've easily charged a little bit for it and we also wouldn't have this.
Regardless of the patch, I just didn't like the game. Trashy presentation, tacky story and voice acting and bland gameplay.
I'm sure that's a games error and mistake because in patches it says UHD dynamic 60fps. 720p is barely HD Ready and not even full HD
When I saw the post on PureXbox and they mentioned 1080p I was SHOCKED and thinking it was a typo. What an embarassing half-a**ed work by the devs really, this is terrible for a last gen game! At least try for Dynamic 4k if you can't achieve native...but 1080p? What a joke
I just installed it as I thought "brilliant!! I'll actually start playing it again!!".......I can't ell you now right as I speak I'm uninstalling it again.....it looks absolutely DISGUSTING!!!!! That's the only word I can think of....it's disgusting....its actually, GENUINELY hurting my eyes trying to focus on it!!!!! The pixels don't even connect anymore!!!!! It looks like someone turnt the resolution to 720p and THEN turnt on AMD's FSR at ultra performance mode!!!! It's horrible!!!!!!! #BOYCOTTUBISOFT
SORT IT OUT UBISOFT!!!! THERES IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED FOR THIS MONSTROSITY!!!!!
all other PS4 games have been put to 60fps ASWELL as a 4k patch.....why can't you do the same???? Heck....the graphics were never exactly eye catching in the first place....but it was fun....now you've completey ruined it.....
If you have an xbox or pc just play forza horizon. Not my type of game but it's far better than this and looks far better.
The new Forza does look really nice.
Those guys are definitely #1 when it comes to gfx in racing games. No one else comes close imo.
@sword_9mm @RedRiot193 I mean, this is mentioned in the article and not really helpful. Some people just own a PlayStation.
I only own a PS5. Forza still is the gfx bar for all racing games. No one does it better than those guys.
@sword_9mm Sure, I agree. I guess I was more responding to the previous poster who was just like "play Forza Horizon". For some The Crew is the only option.
@get2sammyb ??? I didn't read you directly mentioning one was better unless I missed it. So i gave my opinion on one being far superior.
How about this for helpful.. You can get xbox's weakest/cheapest console and still get a better experience and visuals than crew 2. Yeah sure some people only own a ps console. But some are by choice rather than just being broke. You can even play them through the cloud I believe and Samsung tvs are being implemented with that feature. There's many ways to play it.
@RedRiot193 Yeah I get you, but irrespective, there are people still playing The Crew and I hope they can improve it!
@AFCC If you make a solid great looking game with high fidelity 1080P im not complaining. But this is just horrible in all the wrong places.
crew 2 should be upgraded to the ps5
