Re: All PS5 Games with Power Saver Support

MrHabushi

@Andy22385 Apologies for that, a glitch with my email notifications made me think you'd replied since, my fault for not reading it properly.

Nonetheless, both you and tameshiyaku seem to be misunderstanding how the PS5 works; it doesn't use maximum power all the time. Sony's own data demonstrates that a PS4 game will use less power than a PS5 one when run on the same console, and similarly changing between quality and performance modes often also results in different power consumption figures. Power Saver will only save power where a developer chooses to implement a mode which reduces performance and visuals accordingly.

I'll let Sony themselves have the final word on the matter:
"You can turn on power saver for supported PS5 games, **allowing performance to scale back as needed**, reducing power consumption."

Re: All PS5 Games with Power Saver Support

MrHabushi

@tameshiyaku Lowering power consumption without affecting performance can be achieved by optimising the game though, it doesn't require an additional mode and that's why it won't help in those cases. The only reason this mode exists is so Sony can claim lower power usage figures or comply with some sort of regulation or compliance target, if they wanted to save energy across the entire user base they'd mandate that all developers implement measures to save energy when their games are idle, or on pause menus by reducing framerates or pausing game engine activity etc. Some games already do this but it should be far more common than it currently is.

Re: All PS5 Games with Power Saver Support

MrHabushi

@tameshiyaku The entire point of the mode is to sacrifice performance and/or visual quality in order to save a bit of energy. If developers are able to implement efficiencies without any impact to performance, they don't need a power saving mode to do it.

Re: PS5's New Power Saver Feature Confirms Its First Supported Games

MrHabushi

@rjejr Perhaps the data will in some way inform a future handheld, but the reality is energy saving modes are there to comply with regulations/schemes and/or allow the manufacturer to boast about energy efficiency relative to their competitors. It's why modern TVs have all the eco functions turned on by default; they can slap an A+++ rating sticker on the box, and it's up to the user to navigate a labyrinth of menus to disable all the ones that are detrimental to image quality.

Re: PS5 Firmware Update Out Now, Brings Power Saver Mode, DualSense Controller Pairing

MrHabushi

@Tr3mm0r That's not how the mode works at all. A 2D indie game will already require fewer resources and therefore less power than a demanding 3D title; Sony's own testing shoe that playing a PS4 title on the PS5 uses substantially less energy than a PS5 title. The entire point of the mode is to reduce performance in demanding games to save power, it's a poor solution when energy wastage could be better addressed by developers.

Re: PS5 Firmware Update Out Tomorrow, Brings Power Saver Mode, DualSense Controller Pairing

MrHabushi

@Ricky-Spanish I've explained why it's perplexing and why features like this are done for the benefit of the manufacturer rather than the end user. Most people paying hundreds for a console need not be concerned with saving literal pennies by compromising how the console performs, in the same way that most people won't be using the eco modes on their new TV if they want to get the most out of it.

I'm all for energy efficiency but it has to be done intelligently. A more sensible approach would be for Sony to mandate that game menus, pause screens, idling games etc drop the framerate (a feature already being found on PC games). It would have the benefit of saving energy and reducing heat without having any impact on the user's experience, instead of shifting the onus to save energy onto the user.

Many games already have an energy saving mode of sorts anyway, as 30fps quality mode will usually use less energy due to the halved framerate.

Re: PS5 Firmware Update Out Tomorrow, Brings Power Saver Mode, DualSense Controller Pairing

MrHabushi

@Ricky-Spanish Nobody appears to be offended, but rather perplexed by the point of it. In the context of an average household, a games console doesn't consume a significant amount of energy, so the cost of using one needn't be a concern for most people.

This is the sort of feature included so manufacturers can claim certain energy efficiency credentials, in much the same way that most TVs these days come with all the eco settings enabled despite being detrimental to image quality; it lets them slap a sticker on the box that says it has an A++++ energy rating.

Re: PS3's Store Has Been Restored, After Fans Feared the Worst

MrHabushi

@blourf As a player and customer my concern isn't in their net profit, so why do you think it's in a customer's best interests that they close it down? Don't get me wrong, I'm realistic and understand that it can't go last forever for a variety of cost and technical reasons, but there's more to the decision than just profit. SCE didn't u-turn on their decision to close it a few years ago purely because of profit, it was because of the damage to the brand and their reputation they would have suffered as a result.

Don't conflate your interests in them as an investor with everyone else who isn't. Your investment isn't my concern and I'm happy for SCE to run the PS3 Store to run at a loss.

Re: Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Is Having a Tougher Time on the PS5, PS4 Pre-Order Charts

MrHabushi

I'd be reluctant to read into this too much, the order games appear in that section will not necessarily be indicative of the number of actual pre-orders or sales. When I worked in retail the CD, DVD and Games "charts" were influenced by sales figures but not dictated by them, and publishers/distributors would regularly fund campaigns which gave them a prominent position in those charts.

Re: 'We'll Continue to Evolve the PS Store': Sony on Making PS5, PS4 Shopping Better

MrHabushi

There are so many things it could be doing better using data they already have. They know what type of games people play, so why not make better use of that for recommendations? They know if you have PSVR2 for example, so they should display a more prominent PSVR2 section to those players, instead of making them search for it.

Even obvious stuff baffles me; why is a big new release often not on the front page of the store, forcing you to go looking for it? Why, when viewing a specific game, are other titles from the same series or franchise not always recommended alongside? Often it just shows a random assortment of other titles and doesn't care whether you own them or not.

The PS Store is awful for just browsing games in the hope of finding something you might be interested in; the only way I use it is via my wishlist or searching for the specific title I want.

Re: PS3's Store Has Been Restored, After Fans Feared the Worst

MrHabushi

@Matthewnh Should we also stop listening to older music, watching older films and reading older books? If you're surprised anyone still has or uses their PS3s then I'm afraid you're rather out of touch; retro gaming (as much as it pains me to admit the PS3 now qualifies as retro) is incredibly popular as those older platforms have huge libraries of excellent games to play.

Re: Gritty FPS Ready or Not Ruled the PS Store in July 2025

MrHabushi

@Mr_Singh That's because it wasn't heavily censored, people were just exaggerating; they made some slight changes to nudity and dismemberment, that's about it. As far as content, tone and gameplay are concerned the game is otherwise the same as it always has been.

Re: PS3's Store Has Been Broken for a Day, Forcing Fans to Fear the Worst

MrHabushi

@blourf Why would you hope that? What impact is it's continued existence having on you? Leave the business decisions to the business.

It's obviously not going to last forever but I'm glad it's kept going as long as it has, it was only a couple of years ago that I bought a Ratchet & Clank game on there that I'd missed back in the day.

Re: Ready or Not (PS5) - Disturbing Co-Op Shooter Is a Tactical Must-Play

MrHabushi

@Nepp67 I ask this sincerely, have you actually looked into what changes were made and how little they effect the game? I've been playing it since it's final phases of early access on PC and am really, really struggling to understand what people are outraged about. It's been totally blown out of proportion. Void revived a dying genre and this is how gamers thank them.

Re: PS Stars Program Marks Its Eventual Shut Down with One Last Collectible

MrHabushi

@Balaam_ The implementation of Stars was evidently a bit of a failure, but not for any of the reasons you've mentioned. For the vast majority of people the way collectibles and points were rewarded was relatively simple and accessible; if that's at odds with what a minority of trophy obsessives want then so be it. The main appeal of Stars for most was the free wallet rewards, not the (surprisingly detailed) trinkets, especially when they were only ever visible on the app.

Re: Square Enix Takes 'Large Loss' on Life Is Strange: Double Exposure

MrHabushi

I'm playing this at the moment, having waited until it was on sale as the high launch price, paid early access and additional "story" content (which turned out to be nonsense) exclusive to the premium editions put me off getting it at launch. There's bits I like but plenty I don't, and it's a rather unpolished game even months after release. It's littered with annoying bugs like objects hanging in the air, characters suddenly appearing or T-posing at the start or levels and cutscenes, and the sound design and overall audio quality is absolutely abysmal, with dialogue volume varying wildly between characters and directional audio feeling almost random at times. It's mostly been a massive disappointment for me as I really enjoyed True Colours.

Aside from some fancier visuals and some decent performance capture it doesn't really feel like the series has evolved much since the first one, and for price they launched it at I was expecting better.

Re: PSVR2 Misses Out on Civilization 7 VR

MrHabushi

@tselliot I'd hazard a guess you didn't put forward a particularly compelling argument in that case. Lots of people were desperate for it to fail from day one, but at that point nobody knew first party support would dry up so quickly. Sony seemingly forgot to promote the thing for the better part of the year and the Quest 3 got all the attention instead.

Re: Do You Put Your PS5 in Rest Mode or Shut It Down?

MrHabushi

Before I got 1Gbps FTTP it was always in rest mode so any updates were downloaded overnight, and to charge controllers, headsets etc. Now though any updates take seconds so i mostly use it if I'm in the middle of a game and can't save.

Rest mode is very Energy efficient even on the older console revisions so that need not be a concern either way.

Re: Square Enix Wonders Why Life is Strange: Double Exposure Didn't Work Out

MrHabushi

I really liked True Colours, it's probably my favourite of the franchise and I was happy to pay the extra at the time for the version with the Wavelengths episode. I still haven't played DE though; early access shenanigans, price increases and locking content behind the more expensive versions killed any enthusiasm I had for getting it at launch. It'll be one I pick up in a sale now.

Re: Intergalactic PS5's Toxic Detractors Peddling Patently Fake 'Leaked' Story Details

MrHabushi

@Treestar "The lead in this game doesn't even look like the actor who is leading her role."

Why is this an issue only when people don't find the character design attractive? It isn't remotely uncommon; the actors are selected to deliver a performance, not necessarily a particular aesthetic. Joel doesn't look like Troy Baker, Ellie doesn't look like Ashley Johnson, and believe it or not James Arnold Taylor is not actually a yellow Lombax.

Re: Shocking: Sony Promotes PSVR2 with New Trailer Showcasing Upcoming Games

MrHabushi

I can highly recommend Red Matter and Red Matter 2, both excellent games with really impressive levels of environmental interaction and physics.

I've been playing Metro recently, there are some ropey visuals at times and the environments are somewhat unsurprisingly a bit samey, but interacting with your items/inventory feels really tactile and the combat against humans enemies is really good, and maybe even better than HL Alyx.

Re: One Month Later, PS Stars Cash Rewards Finally Return

MrHabushi

This isn't quite accurate and the same was said back when it was being reported the wallet options had been removed; plenty of people still had them, myself included. The £5 and £20 options were replaced with a £10 option for me. Now I have £5 and £10.

Re: Hitman Studio Will Remove All Conor McGregor Content After Court Ruling

MrHabushi

What little I know of him is that he's a despicable thug. As much as I appreciate IOI as a developer I have no sympathy for them or other brands now being burned by association. That being said, as long as they've made money from it they won't care.

As for those in the comments defending him because "women lie", you're only demonstrating how ignorant and out of touch you are. Women are not queueing up to make spurious allegations of sexual assault so they can go through weeks/months/years of having their character ripped apart by legal professionals, the press and people on social media. These types of crimes are vastly under-reported and it's attitudes like that which make women feel they won't be believed.
