Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 528

Matthewnh

Short Answer : Nothing!

Yes, I know. Shocking.

I move house in a couple of weeks time, so now everything is in boxes. My life has been complete chaos for the last month, and will probably be so, for the next few months, too.

Finished the Avatar game a while ago, then put the PS5 away in its box. A general helping hint for everybody, Keep your Boxes for your Hardware. You never know, it might come in useful.

Have fun, everyone.

Re: Rumour: Is LEGO Horizon Aloy's Next Big PS5 Adventure?

Matthewnh

Played through both Zero Dawn, and Forbidden West. A couple of times. And Frozen Wilds, Burning Shores.

The Lego thing does not appeal to me, because first and foremost it will be a “Lego” game, and not a “Horizon” game. If that makes sense.

But I would love to see Horizon 3. But it shall likely launch on the PS6 at this rate.

But I agree, I would love a remake of the Zero Dawn, for the PS5. Despite getting tired of remasters of older games, this is probably the only one that I like to play again, and again.

Re: Random: Get Crafty with These Cool Horizon Forbidden West Papercraft Models

Matthewnh

Love the detail in those. They look amazing. The colours are perfect.

I don’t have a preference between the Sunwing or the Clawstrider. They are both so good that I cannot choose between them.

Does anybody else remember Heavy Rain on PS3? There were instructions on how to make an origami dog, with a square sheet of paper, if I recall correctly. I don’t remember doing it, as I probably did not have the patience.

Re: Many, Many More Xbox Ports Plotted for PS5, New Speculation Suggests

Matthewnh

Although more choice for us gamers is always going to be a good thing, I cannot actually see the logic in this.

Surely porting Halo, Gears, Forza, etc, to PS5 - yes it would improve software sales - but would it not just stop new people from buying Xbox consoles?

I suppose there must be more money to made from software than hardware sales.

Re: Rumour: Watch Dogs Is Dead, and Legion Reportedly Killed It

Matthewnh

I thought that the original Watch Dogs was great fun. Even though Aiden Pearce was a depressing guy to be around. I was really invested in the story. Played the game through a few times. Had both the PS3 and PS4 versions. But I am sure the game pushed the PS3 too hard.

Watch Dogs 2 was good, and also a lot of fun. The recreation of San Francisco was fabulous, a lot of fun to play in.

Never bothered with number 3 though. Perhaps the novelty had worn off?

Re: Star Trek: Resurgence

Matthewnh

This is possibly the most accurate representation of Star Trek I have seen in a video game.

The computer consoles are accurate, as are the ships, and everything else. They have all of the little details right. However the graphics are not exactly stellar. But once you get used to the art style, it is very enjoyable. Until I was accustomed to it, I felt as if I was watching a cartoon.

Do not expect a Star Trek-skinned Mass Effect. Although there is combat, it is simple, and at times awkward. The game is more of an investigation, a mystery to solve.

The events take place shortly after the end of the Dominion War. Following the uprising of workers at a dilithium mine, the Federation is called to initiate peace talks, as a neutral party. A massive storm in the region has begun, which complicates matters further.

Investigation of both the slave uprising, and the storm lead to new mysteries.

You play through various short scenes, as either First Officer Jara Rydek, or as Carter Diaz, a low ranking engineer.

The actions you take, and the decisions you make affect not only the outcome of the story, but also the relationships with your crew mates, and with the various diplomats you encounter. There are also a few familiar faces, but I will not spoil that.

Because of the nature of the decision-based gameplay, you will need to play through the game multiple times if you wish to unlock the Platinum trophy.

I believe that whether you enjoy the game of not will depend upon whether you enjoy the Star Trek universe.
But, I also think that somebody who was not a fan of Star Trek would be unlikely to even play through this game.

Essentially, Star Trek Resurgence is a fully interactive episode of Star Trek The Next Generation.
But even if you have no knowledge or interest in the source material, then the game itself is not impenetrable. But it certainly would not be as interesting or entertaining.

For me, however, as a Star Trek fan, I would give this game a score of 8/10.

And, anyone who has Star Trek The Next Generation on disc, should watch “The Last Outpost” season one, episode four, before playing. The events in this episode have a major bearing on the storyline of this game.

Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About the PS5 Pro?

Matthewnh

At the minute a PS5 Pro just seems unnecessary.

Have developers already extracted everything they can from base model PS5 in terms of performance? I mean really pushed it to its limits?

I don’t think so. Not yet.

Maybe I am just playing the wrong games.

Re: Naughty Dog Boss Neil Druckmann Doesn't Want to Make Games Forever

Matthewnh

@LifeGirl

I might be wrong, but I believe that you have completely missed the point of the story.

If you remember, Joel killed Abby’s father. He was a doctor in the hospital, in Seattle, A firefly. He also killed Marlene. Did she deserve to die?

So Abby tracks down Joel, and kills him in revenge.

So Ellie tracks her down, kills hundreds of people, to reach Abby. And then spares her life. She wanted the cycle of revenge and violence to end.

I wonder how many people Ellie had already killed in her short life? Let’s start with that town full of cannibals.

I think Ellie just wanted to try to regain some of her humanity, because without that people are really no better than the infected “monsters”.

This is just my opinion, though. That is how I see it.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think of PSVR2, One Year Later?

Matthewnh

I bought the original PSVR.
And because of the lack of software available that really made good use of it, I was highly disappointed. So maybe that coloured my decision, not to buy PSVR2.

Ended up using it mostly just to watch movies in 3D.

Because of this, I naturally was not inclined to invest in PSVR2.
But I do agree that VR has lots of interesting potential. But, personally, the money involved is too much for something that I regard as a “novelty”.

Re: Abusive Last of Us 2 Fans Allegedly Levelled Death Threats at Abby Actor's Newborn Son

Matthewnh

I agree that these people are simply not fans.
Such behaviour is appalling.

We should all be united in condemnation of this immature, ridiculous, (and likely criminal) behaviour. Such people should be ashamed of themselves. Do they even realise the harm they do, to other people, and to the gaming community in general?

Making threats to others in such a way is illegal, right?

This sort of thing only ever gives true fans, and true gamers, a bad reputation.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora?

Matthewnh

The movie Avatar is basically a remake of “Dances with Wolves” that has been given a fresh coat of (blue) paint. But the world of Pandora sure looks gorgeous. And, saying that, I do enjoy the films.

Will get this game soon, hopefully the special edition will still be available.

Re: Poll: Will You Be Buying a PS5 'Slim'?

Matthewnh

I already have a PS5.
Not too keen on not having a disc drive.

That said, i do really like the look of this. I would probably buy one, And the attachable disc drive - if I did not already have my “original” PS5.

Re: The Last of Us 2 PS5 Remaster Seems to Be Real

Matthewnh

I will definitely buy this. Maybe I am a sucker. Maybe I just a glutton for punishment.

But honestly, the Last of Us Part II has never loaded properly on my PS5. So I will be glad to buy a copy that actually plays.

Not that it is exactly a “barrel of laughs”.

Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Could Be Close to 100GB in Size

Matthewnh

Well, I have got an SSD, and there is about 500GB of free space on it. But to be honest I might give this one a miss. The first Spider-Man game was amazing (pun intended), Miles was cool, and fun too. But I feel, this is just gonna be more of the same. I know that is not necessarily a bad thing. But as with all the movies - I have got Marvel overload, right now.

Re: Mini Review: Red Dead Redemption (PS4) - Classic Open World Western Deserves Better

Matthewnh

I finished playing the original Xbox 360 version, which automatically upscaled on the series x. It felt good to finally get around to playing it for the first time. (Yeah, I know, I missed out).

My point is the old version of this game looks far better than this supposed remaster.

Yes it is still a great game, even if I prefer RDR2. But my point is that is not about time we started playing new games, instead of just giving our old games a new paint job?

Re: Poll: Did You Buy Red Dead Redemption's PS4 Port?

Matthewnh

I understand that someone has had to put the work in to get this game “up to scratch” - but I still think it should not have been full price.

I have this game on the xbox. The 360 version is upscaled on the Series X, and looks much better than this.

Both this game, and RDR 2 are automatically upscaled to Xbox One X standard, but not Series X versions.

Have to get around to playing it again sometime, anyway.

Re: Scintillating PS5 RPG Black Myth: Wukong Will Allegedly Feature Heavily at Gamescom

Matthewnh

This looks SO GOOD. Really excited for this one. And for Avatar/Pandora, in December.

I am pleased that the PS5 finally seems to be unleashed - if you know I mean. Developers seem as though they are now really able to use the PS5 to it’s full potential - and it’s only going to get better from here on out.

In fact, I had sort of forgotten about this game. And then I got it mixed up with the other Chinese-style Souls-like, that is already out. Sorry, but I have forgotten what that one is called. Somebody will know what I’m talking about.

Re: Movie Review: Gran Turismo - An Unexpectedly Great Racer

Matthewnh

Just finished reading the review over at Empire magazine (empireonline.com). Not flattering.

Two hours of obvious product placement.
Complete lack of tension

Two Stars (out of five).

For a good racing movie, watch Le Mans 66 (aka Ford vs Ferrari)
For a good Neill Blomkamp movie, watch District 9 or Elysium, again.

And I cannot think of a “Ginger Spice” pun, which is probably just as well.

Mind you, they made a “Need For Speed” movie a few years ago. That is actually pretty good.

Re: Random: Influencer Brings Bedlam to New York City After Promising Free PS5s

Matthewnh

The problem is not “Influencers”.

The problem is savages that have no place in civilised society.

What I have just said may very well be construed as “racist”, but that does not make it any less of a fact. You get a huge number of violent savages congregating in one place, and then you act surprised when they all act like violent savages. What did you expect to happen?

Re: Poll: Will You Be Muting Your PS5's Beep?

Matthewnh

i agree. If the PS5 didn’t beep, I would not know I had turned it on. Sure, it goes into rest mode again, eventually. But that’s not the point.

I am far more interested the three simple words : “Dolby Atmos Support”. Thank you. Finally.

Re: New PS5 Games Release Dates in 2023

Matthewnh

Spider-Man 2
Avatar Frontiers of Pandora
Assassins Creed Mirage
Star Wars Outlaws

And this it for me.

Oh, and Skull and Bones, but I doubt it will ever materialise at all, at this point.

And Starfield, of course. Oh, oops. Wrong console.

Re: Black Panther Game from New EA Team Cliffhanger Games Revealed

Matthewnh

The Spiderman games set a really high benchmark. But this should be good. And Black Panther is so cool, anyway. Looking forward to this. The Guardians of the Galaxy game was supposed to be good, too. I didn’t play it, though. I am probably done with superhero movies, due to complete overload, but if the games are good, then I will be very happy. The greatest superhero games are probably the Batman Arkham trilogy, though. What does anybody else think?

Re: Promising Action RPG Atlas Fallen Goes Gold Ahead of August Release on PS5

Matthewnh

@NullForce

Yeah, let’s all just forget that “Anthem” ever existed, shall we?

In fact, I thought that Andromeda was good. They tried something a bit different, and didn’t quite manage it. I would have loved a sequel to that one.

The thing that really worries me about BioWare, though, is that most of their writers have gone. Difficult to imagine Dragon Age without David Gaider.

Re: "We've Lost the Console Wars," Says Trillion Dollar Underdog Xbox

Matthewnh

So a massive multinational computing company is trying to paint itself as an “underdog” (a non-competitor) so that it can benefit by allowing the Federal Trade Commission to pass a buyout/merger/acquisition that has the net monetary value of the GDP of several small countries put together? Have I got this right? I thought the FTC was meant to prevent unfair business practices. Microsoft+Activision is NOT a merger. It is a cartel.

Re: Hogwarts Legacy Fans Livid Quidditch Is Allegedly Being Sold as a Separate Game

Matthewnh

To be fair, if you wanted to get quidditch to work properly in Hogwarts Legacy, then the flight mechanics would need a complete overhaul.

Has anyone watched a quidditch game in a Harry Potter movie?

Right. You need continual high speed, and pinpoint precision. And quick reactions.

As much as I love the feeling of freedom that you get flying a broom in “Legacy” - there’s no hope of it being good enough for Quidditch.

This is probably the reason for those broom races being time trials, and not against other actual competitors.
