Official popcorn buckets have become marketing masterstrokes, and they’re now infiltrating the world of video games as well.

With Ghost of Yotei heavily inspired by Japanese cinema, Sony is working with Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to broadcast five classic movies which inspired the upcoming Sucker Punch sequel.

The event, named Way of the Samurai, will feature the following movies:

  • Lady Snowblood (1973)
  • Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972)
  • The Tale of Zatoichi (1962)
  • 13 Assassins (2011)
  • Ran (1985)

There’ll also be a Ghost of Yotei-themed menu, featuring various appetisers, desserts, and cocktails. But the real highlight is the aforementioned 100-ounch popcorn bucket, which has been modelled after a traditional Japanese rice bucket. It’ll be available in theatres from 2nd August through 4th September.

Sadly, the existence of this otherwise innocuous merchandise has triggered all kinds of bad takes on social media about the ratio of cutscenes to gameplay in Sony’s games

Dating all the way back to the PS3 era, Sony’s attracted criticism for investing in story-telling, which some argue detracts from gameplay.

Our view on this has always been: why not both.gif?

The Last of Us 2, for example, is not just a rousing, emotional romp – it’s also arguably among the best designed third-person shooters ever made. It’s the reason so many were excited for its cancelled multiplayer spin-off.

And when it comes to the game in question, Sucker Punch has barely shown off any of its story. In fact, during the recent State of Play, we mostly saw protagonist Atsu exploring the game’s gorgeous open world.

It’s irritating to see these kind of tedious takes gain so much traction. We’re vehemently against the idea that in order for a title to be fun to play it must also place so little emphasis on story. You can do both, and Sony’s proved it time after time after time!
