Sometimes it’s hard to for us to feign excitement here at Push Square, and you deserve our honesty. So, allow this author a moment to level with you: he thought The Outer Worlds sucked. There’s no two ways around it.

That doesn’t mean the Obsidian developed sequel will be consigned to being crap, though, and this 11-minute gameplay demo debuted as part of an IGN First exclusive gives us our first taste of what to expect.

This clip, which features a full quest in a location called the N-Ray Facility, ticks all the boxes: there’s a bit of stealth, some all-out combat, and lots of looting and exploration. Much like the original, it all looks a lot like Fallout, just with a more vibrant colour palette.

While it certainly looks fine, it’s still not really doing much for this author – although admittedly it’s hard to sell a sprawling RPG like this within the boundaries of a single quest. We’ll obviously be seeing a lot more in the aftermath of the Xbox Showcase later this summer.

One thing we will say is that it’s pretty incredible Obsidian is releasing this in the same year it also deployed Avowed. Obviously it’s got multiple teams working on these projects, but it just goes to show what’s possible with the right management approach.
