Re: Hands On: Star Wars Battlefront 2 Is a Clumsy, Complicated Sequel

Furtin

@3MonthBeef Battlefront was supposed to be more casual, pick up and play style, which fits the Star Wars franchise perfectly.

Not every shooter needs to be be tactical, hardcore and deep. And after work its sometimes relaxing to just hop in and do a few rounds without the need to heavily concentrate and coordinate ... but yeah, I‘m old.

@starhops I know about the stairs. Tried various times with a squadmate to enter the roof and we both got slaughtered again and again. Needs a coordinated squad afford of at least three to take back the roof, imo. And then we are back to one of the main problems: does it really need to be like Battlefield where you have to play tactical with coordinated squads to hold up against coordinated opponents?

I love the casual/relaxed gameplay of Battlefront 2015. Where, as a singleplayer, a squad is „a person you can spawn on“.

@IceClimbers really, I still can not grasp why they couldn‘t just make a remaster of some sorts from the original Battlefront 2. It still buggles me, why I can not enter a Star Destroyer and take it apart from inside and out.

I have a hard time selling my PSP just because of Battlefront Elite! 😂
Really, transitioning from space to ground is genius and afaik only No Mans Sky does it seemlessly on modern hardware ...
But yeah, nice looking whirlwinds of leaves is more important I guess ...

One thing htough, that makes me rethink my pre-order though is this sentence from sister-site Eurogamer:

„It gets worse when you consider there are bronze, silver, and gold versions of each Star Card - plus a fourth tier I'm not sure the name of. For instance, Boba Fett has a Star Card ability called Death From Above which grants him damage reduction while jetpacking and using Rocket Barrage. Its lowest tier damage reduction (bronze) is 50 per cent, and it's highest tier 100 per cent. That's a huge difference.“

I didn‘t know about that until now and it‘s a superhefty downer, imo. 😞

@get2sammyb spot on article, chapeau!
Although I personally never complained about the first title which I still play and enjoy from time to time. Its exactly that relaxed gameplay what makes me coming back for more.

Sometimes shooters don‘t need to be deep. They just need to be pick up and play fun.

I pre-ordered BF2, though. Can not miss a Star Wars game. And this has great modes, better Starfighter assault and a story!

Re: Single Player Games Are Really Struggling Right Now

Furtin

The thing is that publishers seem to focus only on the top 5 lists. I enjoy Destiny 2 a lot atm. But I also enjoy my retro game collection: pop the cartridge in and go! No downloads, no loading times - just pure couch co-op fun. Nearly unthinkable nowadays.

Re: Review: Project CARS 2 (PS4)

Furtin

As much as I wish to buy it now, everyone is telling me that its full of bugs. Little and bigger ones. Its just not really enjoyable at the current state with its inconsistencies and AI bugs.

Which reminds me of PC1. A lot. Where it was more or less playable after six months or so... and is still full of bugs as of today.

I would like to know if you had any dicouraging bugs and problems while playing the game extensively. I mean that cant be only my friends and some amazon reviews right, telling me to wait?!

Oh and are the car setups great from the getgo or do we have to go down the „Jack Spade“-route again ...?

Re: Gamescom 2017: PlayStation VR's Going Really Well, Says Sony

Furtin

5 games on average? Everyone I know of and also on the subreddit are notoriously buying games and experiences like hot butter cookies. I must have around 20 PSVR games about now ... and I'm in no way the only one.

But yes, good to hear that more is up - can't wait for Skyrim VR! Hopefully Ubisoft or some other giant is working on a Farpoint like experience but Modern Warfare style - that would sell crazy, IMHO!

Re: Review: SUPERHOT VR (PS4)

Musthave title for the PSVR. It's amazing how the movement pans out into a slo-mo-ballet when dodging the bullets while throwing shuriken and some punches.

Great gameplay mechanics overall. I just hope that Sony provides a better tracking camerasystem down the road...

Re: Review: Arizona Sunshine (PS4)

Furtin

Sad to read that others are having problems with the controls. I played through the game twice with the Move Controllers. And while they are far from perfect, due to Sonys awkward tracking, they work pretty good, imo. I get into the game and blaze through it opening doors with a click, teleporting and turning without even thinking and popping Zombie headshots like a no-brainer.

Don't know but I also play extensively Elite Dangerous now, which has a overloaded control scheme that seems to be very offputting to others. I learned it and have a very enjoyable time with it. Same with AZ. Great shooter in VR but to each its own I guess ...

Re: Hands On: Arizona Sunshine Needs Work on PlayStation VR

Furtin

I honestly don't get all the flak it gets from everywhere? I have played it with the Move Controllers and once I got the controls down, I was blazing through the game, double wielding cool looking guns and pulling headshots like a boss - with tons of fun! I love the teleportation system its very fast to travel around. Faster than the free movement anyways, so I don't have the same oppinion as the reviewer. You can just go: snap, snap, snap, turn, bang-bang if you have to run away from Zombies. Its sometimes cluncky and wonky especially when the Move Controllers are hidden (when facing away from the camera) but thats the shitty Sony tracking and you can work around it by turning with the controls. Again, learn them and you are very fast.

Really, it's a must have VR shooter in my oppinion.
Don't know about the AiIM controller and maybe that's where all the negativity comes from?

How can some people even compare it to RE7 or Farpoint, which have a much higher production value and the power of Capcom an Sony behind them?

Re: Hands On: PlayStation VR Platformer Moss Is a Showstopper

Furtin

@JLPick It's simple: buy a Switch, if you are looking for something "to hold on to in the coming years".

Thing is: I bought PSVR day one and haven't regretted a single penny. RE7, REZ and now Farpoint with the AIM Controller are just a few of these titles that makes owning a PSVR a must have, IMO.

Dirt Rally with a wheel is something you wont ever forget and hard to put down, if you are a racing fan that is.

But be warned: if you take the plunge, it will be a costly one, because you'll want to try more and more titles...

Re: PS5 Is Coming, Sony Confirms

The majority doesn't need more powerfull consoles but more innovation in games, IMHO. Everything comes down to games at the end of the day, ever was and ever will.

Nonetheless, all the best and off to a new beginning!

Re: Ace Combat 7's Looking Top Gun on PlayStation VR

Furtin

@solocapers you might want to check r/PSVR but here is something frst hand from developers:

"[–]viveaddict
I've done a few VR jams now and a bunch of experimental titles. Here's one way to think about VR development for the non developers in the audience:
Imagine you are writing an email where after every letter you type you have to stand up, walk over to your VR gear, put on and ensure everything hardware wise is working and then carefully review what you've written in the VR headset. Upon confirmation you must sit down and type one letter and repeat the process over.
Oh and in the middle of writing your email your email program crashes, and this doesn't even include setting the font, or reviewing and edit of your email to ensure that... well, it makes sense.
You invite a friend over to read your email who asks why you wrote an email about dogecoin to the president of FIFA, when you thought you wrote a brilliant poem to the love of your life.
Why are there so many wave shooters? Because they are easy to test."

"[–]LiftoffLabsVR
A related question might be, "why can't developers just port my favorite console/PC games to VR?" Well it's because of all these things we've discussed already and I'll paste part of a reply from another thread here:
Depending on the engine it might technically be easy to flip a switch and activate VR mode for your scene cameras. It's just a checkbox in Unity for instance. Of course that's ignoring all the work it takes to port an older game up to the most recent version of a given engine (which can in some cases be impossible).
Performance is a major problem for existing games – a game built for 30hz at 1080P is just not going to be optimized for 90hz rendering to two eyes. This alone is enough to stop a VR port in its tracks. Performance on PS4 in particular is already a challenge for games coming from PC based VR. You'd be amazed at all the tricks Owlchemy Labs pulled to get Job Simulator running well, and that's a cartoony game.
If you have some interest in the kinds of adaptations that have to be made in a best case scenario, here's an interesting talk about Minecraft. Minecraft is already first person and has a cartoony look that makes it easier to optimize. And still even after all the updates they made, I can only play games with motion like this for a few minutes before I have to stop and take a break for a couple of hours. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_SHuosEORw
Ideally VR games are designed around keeping the player immobile and having action happen around them, and come to them. That's a major break from AAA gaming conventions over the past 20 years."

Re: Ace Combat 7's Looking Top Gun on PlayStation VR

Furtin

I second @Neolit's oppinion. And if early adopters of the PSVR have thought that Sony will bring a plethora of multiple hours long, full fledged games to it, they are definitily missinformed. No developer made that assumption. There are not even a handfull on the other VR platforms aswell. Elite Dangerous and Minecraft comes to mind. But I doubt, that one wants to play them for hours in VR.

VR is all about a new experience and more immersive gaming. I think that this is what PSVR has already showcased and is truly capable of. Batman VR, Robinson, Holoball and Rez Infinite are games where even Vive and Rift Owners are left in the cold...

All in all, its no news that early adopters pay more and get less of whats to come. But we are the avantgarde to push things forward.

Re: Resident Evil 7's Marketing Machine Has Started Early

Furtin

@johncalmc I just played it tonight - its really good. I played it standing (so I wont get motion sick, plus its more immersive!) and I can see myself playing the whole game in VR. What a great atmosphere and since there is a bit of a roomscale to it, you can peek around corners, look closer at objects and you know, make a step here and there and turn around etc.

Just don't expect the HD graphics from your 2D telly and you are good to go!👍

Re: Valkyria Revolution Invades the West on PS4, Vita Next Year

Furtin

Seems strange that they are entirely changing the combatsystem, since it's what define the gameseries and differentiate it from the rest (story aside)...

VC is great on PS4, much better than on the Vita. Stopped playing it at some point but will pick it up again, when I'm in the right mood ☺️

@get2sammyb Btw: the link to Valkyria revolution is broken
