It's been a quiet week for new releases in Japan with one notable exception: Destiny 2. Bungie's sci-fi sequel shot straight to the top of the software charts, shifting 50,263 copies on PlayStation 4. That's not a bad number for the Sony-published Japanese release, but it's worth pointing out that it's down on the original Destiny, which moved over 90,000 copies during its opening week on the current-gen console. It's a similar trend to what's happened here in the UK.
On the hardware side of things there's not much to see. The PS4 still finds itself hovering around that 20,000 units-per-week mark, and that's probably not going to change until we see the launch of another heavy hitter like Dragon Quest XI.

Wonder if Destiny 2 will be down in the US, too. Quite telling that we haven't had any PR come out of Activision yet.
@get2sammyb Yeah, for the original weren't they touting it as the biggest launch ever (Within some parameters to hit that goal of course) and bragging how much money it made within like...2 days?
Guess overhyping games doesnt really work and people are wary the second time around. It barely beat Splatoon 2.
And good to see Pro doubling its sales even if it doesnt sound huge.
I know people love to point out that sales are down for D2 but my friend's list is full of people playing it. It's still #1 in all the charts. It's not all doom and gloom.
@BLP_Software They were, yes!
What caused that spike in pro numbers? Destiny 2?
@Fight_Teza_Fight Japan got the new white model last week
Not a great number for Destiny 2.. and Japan certainly is not big on digital or PC so there's less excuse..
@Splat It's like cod iw, although its sales is way down compared to its predecessor, it still sell millions.
I'm still waiting for the single player destiny 2 reviews, when pushsquare publish the review?
@Godsent Makes sense. Thought there might have been a new ad or price cut.
@wiiware Our plan is to publish the review tomorrow, score and all.
Interesting - I mean it is going to make squillions and some people I know who have got it think it is great so doesn't seem like a bad game but I really thought this would equal if not smash the original.
interesting uptick in the pro
Still decent sales figures, plus it's reviewing well. It's an excellent game, I haven't been this addicted to a game for a very long time.
I also haven't laughed so much in co op ever. No matter what, Destiny 2 will continue to grow and surpass the first game whether it sells as many copies or not.
At this rate, PS4 might pass 6 million in Japan alone by the year's end.
5.5 million is already an absolute certainty.
That means that PS4 could also pass PS Vita this year, despite PS Vita launching in 2011 and PS4 in 2014 in Japan, and PS Vita being a handheld.
@ShogunRok "The PS4 still finds itself hovering around that 20,000 units-per-week mark"
EDIT - I'm illiterate, nevermind. Was thinking DQ11 in the west, my apologies.
And aren't you being a bit unfair w/ that 20k comment? What about those 11k Pro sales? Would it be so bad if PS4 was still selling at 20k but Pro was also selling at 20k? Sony should be happy if the more expensive PS4 is cannibalizing sales of the cheaper one. As far as I'm concerned it's 30k PS4, but that's just me.
@rjejr Yeah, that's a weird interpretation that @ShogunRok has there. PS4 sold close to 30 thousand consoles for the week.
Can't believe X1 can't even outsell Wii U...
@Mahe Well it's an improvement over last weeks article when the Switch was posted well above everything else and the PS4 was at number #1. He fixed it after some kind-hearted ribbing from a few of us.
@Mahe The best sony can do for japan is making portable ps4 (all digital, support sdcard), but I don't think the tech is there yet.
I bet most Destiny2 sales are downloads. Just Check the 5Star ratings in PSN. The Game is no Revolution but its great shooting fun.
@rjejr That was a few weeks ago, but yeah.
I think that's it for the PS4 in Japan until Monster Hunter World.
There's nothing coming to the console that will skyrocket the sales there.
that said 20k per week isn't awful and the it's selling very well in the rest of the world.
@Mahe @rjejr Not sure a 5000 increase in Pro sales is really anything to shout about at the end of the day. If it keeps going up, fair enough.
theres SO many digital sales tho are they accounted for in those numbers?
@ShogunRok Not the Pro increase, the total number. That's nearly 30 thousand PS4s sold for the week in Japan, not 20 thousand.
@ShogunRok I really don't like ganging up any one so I'm leaving it at "what he said"
@rjejr @Mahe Yowza I can't do math. But same difference, it'll be back at 20k next week (probably).
@ShogunRok OK, since you mentioned it earlier, what is the next big game in Japan? Do we even really care about Japan anyway, it's such a small market? But if we did, will SWBF2 move the needle over there? For a console that has so many games coming out I want they really seem stacked in 2018. (Which I know makes sammy happy, they don't have to compete w/ CoD) But who knows what Japan gets, crazy waifu drumming games.
@rjejr "Do we even really care about Japan anyway, it's such a small market?"
Over 8 % of the whole world's PS4s have been sold there, and they're not even too fond of home consoles these days. And it was released there in 2014. You call that small?
That figure is around 33 % for 2DS and 3DS systems, in case you were wondering.
@ShogunRok That might happen next week, or it might not. But it's obviously not "hovering around 20,000" when it was 26,000 last week, and close to 30,000 this week.
To balance things out, if it's back to 20,000 next week, you should write that it's "hovering around 30,000".
@Mahe Let me know when it gets to 10% then we'll talk
I was under the impression they gave 2/3DS to newborn babies in the hospital then they get their first Pokemon game on it when they turn 1.
@Mahe The point I always try to make with the 20k thing is that 20k has been the sales baseline for months upon months upon months. Let's not get snarky.
@ShogunRok This year, PS4 has sold an average of 33,500 systems / week in Japan. Of course, there are fluctuations in there. But it's not 20k this week, it wasn't 20k last week, it hasn't been 20k for a lot of weeks. At this point, PS4 would actually have to return to that 20k level and stay there for several weeks for it to be called a baseline.
