@TheFakulty this is exactly what happened with concord. They signed a full on promotional deal with UK fast food chains and the game wasn’t even out. Unknown 9 wasn’t bad but it wasn’t the hit the studio seemed to be expecting, which indicates they were very much over confident.
I would have bought it on launch but canada seems to have virtually no copies in stores. It would be doing even better if it did. If this doesn't get sorted in the next couple of weeks, it'll be buried in my memory by monster hunter. Shame because the demo was amazing.
I was going to but Canada has literally no physical copies in stores, Best Buy doesn’t even have it online. Our supply chains are a joke these days. I was going to go for it but I’ll wait for a discount.
@Nem agreed mostly. Some of the writing felt very Disney but overall it’s a great game that was worth my time and money. Wishing her well in her future endeavours!
A total disaster. Make no mistake, Jim Ryan did not retire from PlayStation. He was pushed out of the company, mutiny or otherwise. Any retirement is cutting his losses. Under his leadership the brand suffered immensely. PlayStation still has many absolutely incredible titles, but I genuinely hope no more decisions of this magnitude are made in the foreseeable future.
Makes complete sense, really. I still won’t buy remasters for games I don’t care to play or games that don’t even need one. Remaster Bloodborne, remaster twisted metal ps3, remaster infamous 1 and 2. I would absolutely buy those. But horizon? Last of us? No thanks.
Say what you will, for all the laughing at Xbox during the Xbox one reveal, the ps5 generation was marred by our own version of Don Mattrick. Ryan is not missed at all, but I’m glad that that Sony is course correcting.
@DonJorginho these live service games were most likely Jim’s directives. One by one that man’s babies are being aborted, and I have no problem with it. Layoffs and closures would be horrific, especially given the Demons Souls remake was brilliant. Still, I’m pretty disappointed that after all this time they were working on garbage a lot of people don’t want or care for.
@AdamNovice works out well for Nintendo, works out well here I’m sure. At the end of the day Sony has the rights but they also presumably aren’t inclined to do anything without Miyazaki involved in some capacity. Unless Nightreign becomes a game changer (looks fun and I’ll buy it, but nothing earth shattering) Fromsoft is not the golden goose. Miyazaki is.
Nintendo has never had interest in competing with Xbox or PlayStation, and never needed to. The fact that they have now consolidated their handheld and home console ecosystems as well as effectively own the game cartridge business (the manufacturers for the cartridges are all either wholly or mostly owned by Nintendo) means they have their own market. Out of all the Sony leaders over the years, unless I’m missing someone, Jim Ryan was the only one to ever really throw a little shade at Nintendo or to make any notion of competing with them. Even then, they had market analysis that showed PlayStation is often paired with a switch in households, next to PCs. So long as PlayStation continues the upwards trend of their recent decisions (2025 will be a good year for them as well) I see no reason Sony or Nintendo should be struggling.
@SoulChimera completely agree with you. I do support them in this endeavour, given the lack of proper punishment for criminal conduct online. Heck, revenge porn with deepfaked stuff is still a problem and no one can do anything. But garnishing someone’s wages for the rest of their life? That’ll do it. Extreme but efficient.
@Llamageddon I prefer indie (AA) games most days and will always go for them if they pique my interest. My problem is that a lot of recent games just chase trends instead of doing anything unique or interesting. Nine Sols, Wayfinder (despite its rocky development), Lies of P, Stellar Blade, Hades ll, etc are all amazing because they take existing formulas and make something new and creative.
Ubisoft sadly doesn’t like to do much new, a fresh coat of paint on the same thing is why they’ve been struggling. It s a sad situation because they used to be a company that no one wanted to compete with, now they’re the company that doesn’t want to compete against others.
@LavenderShroud me too! Once upon a time I was a massive Ubisoft fan and didn’t mind a lot of open world stuff. I just haven’t been impressed by the recycled and hyper monetized structure they’ve been going for the last few years
@DonJorginho they do for sure. I just am reluctant to suddenly shift to optimism given their track record. I was going to grab it day one but now I’m not so sure. October was pretty busy and they delayed it out of that, February is too and they’ve delayed it again. March is empty for now but if Nintendo goes and announces the switch 2 for that month or April, well…here’s hoping they don’t delay it again.
@RoomWithaMoose I agree in most circumstances, but Ubisoft has had a track record for many many delays and very marginal difference in regards to polish. That’s where my cynicism comes from, this is a company that really doesn’t want to be around big releases. Outlaws was this way, Skull and Bones was and even Mirage was. It’s a red flag with ubisoft, though recent footage does look much better
Smells like skull and bones all over again. Don’t get me wrong I was intrigued at least but another delay? They don’t want to compete with other February games, I get it, but Ubisoft has done this with every single release. They aren’t confident. Neither am i.
I’ll be real, this isn’t surprising. A friend in Toronto worked at their flagship and he said it’s the worst place in the world to work, as they literally don’t give you hours solely so that they don’t have to pay benefits when you leave. Managers get transferred in from other recently closed or soon to be closed locations. Baffling.
Path of exile 2 is also getting fudged by 24H2. Microsoft needs to get a new update out fast because this update is completely screwing way too many games. I’ve paused updates permanently until there’s a Microsoft side fix.
I know what he’s trying to say (that adding sociopolitical subjects needs to serve a purpose and not be just for show and shoehorned in) but I it’s a bit vague and the word pure is, uh, unfitting given how many lunatics think lgbtq or folks of color are ‘impure’.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, developers need to be disbarred from social media. It’s a can of worms no studio needs and makes optics and sometimes the success of a game quite poor.
@Hypoman very annoying! Nothing wrong with the console or tv, anything like that. I have some hypersensitivity issues and my eyes just don’t do well with super brights, so flickering is noticeable to be more than most. PSSR eliminated a lot of it, same with Nvidia DLSS.
Sadly I think shadow of the erdtree will sweep it. I’ve a hard time believing it won’t given the dlc eligibility was seemingly introduced only for this.
I genuinely believe it’s because few games came remotely close to Black Myth and Astro Bot. It’s been a pretty empty year, and no Rebirth doesn’t deserve even a nomination. I’ve never quit a game right at the final boss and moved on completely.
@Hypoman the reason pssr is a boon, at least for me, is because my eyes are hyper sensitive to vrr, vertical sync etc. I can see the flickering and it’s dizzying, causing discomfort and headaches. Pssr removes a lot of that flicker, or at least it reduces it to a point where I don’t notice it.
Microsoft comes in: “Hey Fable is cancelled! But to present the next great product, Peter Molyneux with What’s in the box 2!”
Before anyone gets upset, no I was not happy to see that oaf again earlier this year. I could go the rest of my life without him popping up and be happier for it.
As far the show goes, the industry keeps saying we should be excited but we are also told to be excited for Concord.
@gonzilla it’s not a terrible game, gameplay itself is super fun and flashy. Like a beat em up with loot. But the thing that killed it so early was server issues, which they never really acknowledged until it got so bad no one played. Too little too late.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare also have to wonder what happens if they don’t add the promised offline mode, which was a major draw pre launch. Valve updated their refund policies so they’d have to refund it, but I can’t imagine it’s retroactive. Either way, I’m sure the drama isn’t over yet. WB loves to surprises us with bad decisions.
@AdamNovice I remember years ago there was a blurb about Phil Spencer wanting to expand Microsoft’s Japanese footprint, and this may have been a discussion had back then. Likely fell apart pretty fast. As for tencent, I don’t see a Japanese firm being thrilled about a takeover unless it’s inflating its value exponentially. A Chinese company would censor and shutter anything that had any ounce of mature content, heck Nintendo’s partnership there just crapped out. So whatever the case, I’d rather Sony buy them than the other companies. That being said, sounds like Sony only wants part of it. So unless they’re willing to take losses and just get out, it likely won’t go through. But I’d wager they are.
@DonJorginho that would actually be nice, if I’m being honest. No corporate script, no public facing comments. I genuinely believe there’s a lot more to that saga, Sony makes some bad calls but two weeks to the can is highly unusual.
Usually don’t chime in on this kind of thing but I agree 100% with the removal, though I’d like to see people who paid get a refund. Never played the game myself but it’s not a good look to associate with this guy. Given the defence argument was literally just “she’s a gold digger”, yeah. Eff this guy. Rape is a horrific crime, and capitalizes on ensuring the victim remembers it. Truly evil.
@Major_Player had mine for less than 24 hours. No noticeable difference barring a small framerate boost, and that’s using VRR which comes with its own issues. Leaving hardware improvements up to developers to take advantage of is going to backfire hard.
@nessisonett they’ve been up there on the “we’re man children” list over the last year for sure, alongside Bethesda and blizzard. Rod Ferguson got fussy about PoE2’s livestream dwarfing Diablo’s, the Swedish (I think) guy got fussy about Starfield not being as well received and let’s not forget Guerilla getting upset about Elden ring outselling forbidden west. These companies need to either force their devs to sign a gag order for a certain amount of time or just punish them for being obnoxious, it’s bad for business.
Sony would need to do two things for me to be interested. They’d need to acknowledge Nintendo as a competitor and they’d also need to not murder the system like the vita with proprietary memory sticks and such that Sony couldn’t even keep in stock.
I definitely can’t imagine the ps6 doing very well if it’s priced higher than ps5 pro, especially if there’s still a general lack of exclusives and direction that appeals to their player base. I worry they’re charging headfirst into a wall, maybe several years away but it’s there.
While I’m sure many of us would have loved to see more, it’s nice that so many ps5 exclusive games are supported. PS4 pro’s launch list was very lacking in then-recent titles despite the much larger library. Hoping it grows, and hoping more studios move to UE5.
The sad part is that scalpers are often from rich families, hence the wave of videos after the initial launch of them basically demolishing unsold consoles. They’re rich brats that can afford it. That being said, the value of peace of mind cannot be overstated. So if they’re that frustrated about not being able to profit, I’m definitely content. It’s clear console manufacturers are aware of this fact, and are taking precautions. My opinion of Sony as of late is obviously low, but credit where credit is due. Scalpers are pigs. Let them starve.
So at the end of the day, like many of us have said, it’s up to developers to justify their pay. Sounds good, don’t half ass your job and AI won’t be as appealing to bring in as your replacement.
I’m sorry for being grim, but laziness and incompetence are far too commonplace. The guy from Starfield (lead designer or something?) that basically went on a warpath and said game development is hard and BG3 shouldn’t be looked to as a precedent despite having a fraction of Starfield budget is a great example of who to fire so their job can be done using AI. Years of telling consumers to vote with our wallets, and now that we’re doing this you’re upset? Rivers that way, friend.
@zhoont I didn’t play and now don’t plan to given the waning interest and the space the game occupied. Looks amazing and I love the lore, but my reason for not playing at launch was simple: not buying digital copies knowing full well they’ll eventually release physical. And by then I moved to PC.
I got burned by BG3 from this and never again. That’s also why they didn’t make as much as they should have. Stop making bad choices with releases and you’ll make more money. That’s it.
@The_Wailing_Doom you should look up OPSEU, one of the dumbest and most worthless unions I’ve ever witnessed. This one is just as stupid, but unions have been relatively unchecked as of late and their purpose to protect workers is being overlooked in order to throw tantrums. The confusing thing about the CWA here is they’re talking about mobile gaming when neither of the studios were mobile save for neon koi, and they never even released anything.
@get2sammyb after DD2 I won’t buy games from Capcom on release anymore, this is not acceptable at all. I’m hoping it gets better, but I’m not going to shell out over a grand just to ensure a game runs half decent. Developers are the problem these days, not platform holders. Optimize your stuff or get no sympathy when you get laid off, I’m sorry but consumers are not your support workers. We pay for something and we expect it to work and to work well.
@Grumblevolcano and of those six games one is dead, murdered, by Lord Sony. One is delayed to god knows when and the other is being kept in a dungeon somewhere. The released ones are fine but have less player engagement than many other platform exclusive games, and that’s not a good thing.
Should have been doing this all along. My major concern here is that if they are that committed to this approach, then it would mean they have very very little to actually get excited about. Actions, my man. Make me want a 900 dollar piece of hardware, don’t make me laugh at it and never touch the brand again. You’re a businessman, and if you’re bad at business maybe go to another industry
In Canada very few stores are stocking physical, sometimes getting one or two copies of big release like Mario party or metaphor. It’s an intentional flog to force people to buy digital so that they don’t have make physical anymore or allow people to own their stuff. Nothing new.
@Neither_scene I don’t mind frame gen personally, but I do mind frame gen used to lessen developer load. On PC, unless it’s an error, it’s 1080p @ 60 fps with frame gen. Not only that but frame gen is labelled as “recommended”. That is a big red flag on fire, so I really hope they can optimize it further before launch if that’s the expectation.

@MasterChiefWiggum I’ve always said a Sony without competition is like the Burger King. Terrifying, gaudy and increasingly useless.
Re: Sony Adopting 'Show Don't Tell' Strategy with PS5
@Grumblevolcano and of those six games one is dead, murdered, by Lord Sony. One is delayed to god knows when and the other is being kept in a dungeon somewhere. The released ones are fine but have less player engagement than many other platform exclusive games, and that’s not a good thing.
Re: Sony Adopting 'Show Don't Tell' Strategy with PS5
Should have been doing this all along. My major concern here is that if they are that committed to this approach, then it would mean they have very very little to actually get excited about. Actions, my man. Make me want a 900 dollar piece of hardware, don’t make me laugh at it and never touch the brand again. You’re a businessman, and if you’re bad at business maybe go to another industry
Re: Like It or Not, This Is Why PS5 Pro Doesn't Have a Disc Drive
In Canada very few stores are stocking physical, sometimes getting one or two copies of big release like Mario party or metaphor. It’s an intentional flog to force people to buy digital so that they don’t have make physical anymore or allow people to own their stuff. Nothing new.
Re: Monster Hunter Wilds Showcase Will Debut 'New Details' Next Week
@Neither_scene I don’t mind frame gen personally, but I do mind frame gen used to lessen developer load. On PC, unless it’s an error, it’s 1080p @ 60 fps with frame gen. Not only that but frame gen is labelled as “recommended”. That is a big red flag on fire, so I really hope they can optimize it further before launch if that’s the expectation.
