Re: Concord PS5, PC Scalpers Attempt to Cash In on 'Rare Collector's Item'

Barryburton97

I bought a copy from Asda yesterday, mostly for comedy value and just in case it is indeed valuable in future.

It all depends what happens to the multiple thousands of unsold copies. If they are destroyed at Sony's behest then the sold copies might be valuable purely as a collectible. If an "enterprising" person somehow gets hold of boxes of them from the warehouse and floods the market then it'll be pretty worthless.

There are several sold listings for £50-100 on eBay at the moment as well, which is a bit mad.

I can't see them ever going back on retail sale, most likely digital FTP or forever shut down.

Re: Reaction: PlayStation Needs to Take a Long, Hard Look at Itself

Barryburton97

People keep saying that live service/ online multiplayer games aren't what gamers want, when in fact that is where the vast majority of revenue comes from. Money talks. The likes of us who post on Push Square aren't the target for live service games.

I'm happy with high quality single player games, but that's not what the masses are spending on.

The failure here, however, was charging for a mediocre game when its (better) competitors are free, with loyal player bases. It makes Anthem look successful!

Re: A Lot of PS4 Owners Have Yet to Upgrade to PS5

Barryburton97

Quite surprised at all the "there's no games and there's barely any difference" comments. I think the PS5 is fantastic, I'm pretty overwhelmed with how many games there are to play. And it's common to get used to the visual upgrades so it doesn't feel so special. It's like getting used to 4K TV- try going back to an old DVD and it's shocking.

We have been missing some truly enormous and groundbreaking games recently (the likes of Red Dead 2) but that's not really a PS5 problem.

Re: Soapbox: This Is Why Physical Games Are Still Important to Me

Barryburton97

I went for a digital PS5 to stop myself hoarding physical games. A hard stop to an, on reflection , unhealthy habit. Now I only buy a digital game when I need something to play which is getting rarer these days. The decision was easier when you consider that all discs seem to need updating, many games require online connections, internet is blazing fast now (sympathy for those without!), and many games aren't made physical anymore.

Have now whittled down to just a moderate sized collection of stuff I really loved or want to keep for the memories. Anything disc based for PS4 onwards I don't even have a way to play them at home.

I do get the archival argument and I'm happy physical is still going, but it occured to me a while back that I don't personally need to be the one building an extensive archive. Unless the apocalypse hits we'll be able to find stuff if we really want it one day.

Re: Poll: Is God of War Ragnarok Still One of Sony's Best Games, One Year Later?

Barryburton97

A very well made game no doubt, it looks amazing, has a great script and character interaction, and there were some really impressive boss battles and it was a satisfying ending.

But let's be honest, the overall story is mostly forgettable and overly long with all manner of padding and MacGuffins, the combat is very repetitive, the world is beautiful but linear and pretty empty, the platforming amounts to "push up and press circle", the gear and skills upgrade system is overly complex for what is actually pretty basic in RPG terms, and the puzzles are very easy.

A decent 8.5/10 at best I reckon.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Resident Evil 4 Remake?

Barryburton97

Having a blast with this.

Coming from the likes of Horizon FW it feels very stiff and slow, but once you get used to it again, it's great.

A masterpiece of video game making- always keeps things moving, great atmosphere, humourous, totally unrealistic but also very immersive.

My tip is to turn off HDR as it doesn't really work properly and makes everything look washed out and weird.

Re: Resident Evil 4 Remake on PS4 Is Why Cross-Gen Needs to End

Barryburton97

@jmac1686 agree on the PS5 version. The image feels sub HD, and the lighting is all over the place, with weird colour tints and it taking a noticeable amount of time to adjust to light or dark environments. I still love the game but the likes of God of War, and even Resident Evil Village actually, put this to shame technically

Re: The Last of Us: Part I (PS5) - A Better, More Beautiful Remake of a Modern Classic

Barryburton97

Wasn't going to shell out for this any time soon, but the TV series had me yearning for another go, and well, this is the best version of it.

Fired up the PS4 remaster for a comparison, and against even that, the PS5 remake really is a stunning upgrade. The lighting is gorgeous throughout, the cinematics are quite incredible now, and the violence feels even more visceral and shocking. Things like the snow and water effects must be some of the best out there.

I would have liked more of a remix of item locations, and some additional content; maybe bigger levels, open up some of those fenced off streets and buildings, shake up the plank and pallet puzzles a bit with some head scratchers, give the enemies some new skills and vehicles...

But all things considered, it's still an all time great of a game, and hits hard every time you revisit it.

Re: The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan (PS4) - An Unexplosive Opening

Barryburton97

This review is a little harsh now. The technical issues have largely been fixed, other than the occasional frame rate drop.
The story does take too long to get interesting, and but then the mystery is solved very quickly. It's an interesting enough plot though.

The characters can irritate a little, but overall they're not too bad.

Worth a play through for Supermassive fans and horror fans in general. 7/10.

Re: Red Dead Redemption No Longer Playable on PS5, PS4 in a Troubling Sign of the Times

Barryburton97

Very disappointed, I started Undead Nightmare last week, only to be told it was about to leave the service. RDR is truly a masterpiece, still a joy to play today. Not many games can touch the acting and script, the sound design, the environments.

Surely a port of the Xbox or PC version to PS4/PS5 is reasonably possible? Lots of people would lap it up.

This has even got me considering an Xbox. Things must be serious.

Re: Poll: Rate Your Favourite PS4 Games

Barryburton97

GOTG for me, 10/10

Death Stranding
Red Dead Redemption 2
Resident Evil 2 Remake
Horizon Zero Dawn.

Last of Us 2 would be in there if the story wasn't so miserable and frustrating.

Honourable mention and a 9/10 for Days Gone, overlong but quite underrated IMO.

Re: Stray's Physical Edition is Out Today on PS5, PS4 Coming Soon

Barryburton97

@Titntin I think your point about the archival value is important and one that few people think about. Given that most new release discs are incomplete games, and that many need an internet connection anyway, a disc has less archival value than it used to.

I went digital for PS5 as I value the convenience and don't mind waiting for sales, but still buy the odd disc for collectable and archival purposes. Not many fully patched discs on PS5 yet, though Stray might be an exception.

(And don't forget maybe half of all releases, albeit mostly indies, don't even come out on disc, or only on stupidly overpriced limited runs).

As for plastic concerns, I think physical media is a rare case where plastic is a necessary evil, as it lasts so long. I worry more about food and drink packaging which makes up the vast majority of plastic waste.
