Re: Review in Progress: Marathon (PS5) - Bungie's Extraction Shooter Is Brilliant, and It Only Gets Better

@MaelysSedisia that’s not exactly true. There’s an entire thread on Reddit discussing this exact topic. It has hero shooter elements. You could call it “classes” if you want. I can call it a hero shooter if I want. Both are opinions and neither one of us will be able to convince the other one that our opinion is right, so why fixate on that?To me, there are distinct features of “hero shooters” that appear in the structure of the characters in this game. If it still bothers you, take the word “hero” out of my comment. Doesn’t bother me any.

Re: Marathon PS5 Is Out Here Turning Its Launch Trailer into a Music Video

@TheEnygma sure, but the demand for a good city builder is probably quite a bit higher than another cookie cutter pay to play vehicle dressed as a hero shooter. It’s not a bad game, but I’m also not saying that it shouldn’t be made. I had enough fun with it during the Server Slam. My worry is that it is another wasted moment from Bungie that will cost a lot of hardworking talented people their place in this shrinking industry, and with that I wonder WHYYYYY?

To each their own, ya know? I bought more physical games last year than any other year in the PS4-5 era. This year will be less because I’m a Premium subscriber, but I will always buy the big games physically, so I hope they leave the light on for those of us who do!

@OmegaStriver agreed. It’s a good looter/shooter, but what does that actually mean, ya know? I get so bored of this style of game so quickly. The gameplay loop is just so simplistic and the skill gap gets so wide that I’d rather be mastering a combat system in a single player for 70 hours rather than dropping in on the same map for the 100th time with the same plan as last time. I can barely dump 20 hours into them before I find myself hovering over the icon while considering deleting it. And it seems like that’s a pretty general consensus. Arc Raiders and Helldivers 2 are exceptions in that I got bored playing them after 40 hours. They’re great community games where friends can run around together, but they’re just not sustainable.

I’ve had a good time thus far. Shooting feels good, combat is spicy, particularly against other teams. Any decent looter/shooter does that well. Would really like to see the time it takes to open a chest or dead drop to a liiiittle quicker. I know they want it to be a little more time consuming. But still. The classes are interesting but still a bit imbalanced, but they’re working on it. The feel of the world is cool though. It’s gaudy and I dig it.

The only real complaint I have is the community. Last night, the PS rating was around 4 and a half. I think even at 4.6ish. Today, it’s 3.19. Ain’t no ***** way that the people review bombing it actually truly played it from when I went to bed last night at 1 AM East Coast US time and when I had a chance to hop on and play it briefly today at 2:00 EST in order to drop it that much. It’s shambolic and one of the grossest things about being a video gamer.

@8bitOG if you can only count on one hand over the years “good” games on Essential you either have too high of standards or can’t identify a good game when it literally drops in your lap for “free.” And you still didn’t answer my question. XBOX worth it? Nintendo Online? And sorry, most people don’t want to sit around for 2 hours optimizing every game they play or investing in a 2,000 dollar rig that they have to build themselves. Your sense of “value” is questionable and quite exclusive.
