But if they keep bringing their games over to me on PS why would I buy one? Like I have no doubt the machine will be powerful, but just being a console of multiple store fronts ain't it for me chief.

Crazy that this got announced via a tweet though. Playstation must have known about this, hence their timing of leaking out that they’re gonna stop porting to PC.

With so many people saying this gen should be longer, i really wonder if this a good decision from MS?

What does PC mean in this context though? Does it really mean Steam and all other PC storefronts? Or does it mean only Xbox/Windows PC? And if it does include Steam, i wonder how they’re gonna prevent it from totally cannibalizing their revenue.

I wonder how this will compete with Valve’s PC/console device? Seems like the Steam Machine might already beat them to the punch with a PC under the tv model, and probably be cheaper too by the looks of the specs.

Also, i wonder if PC players are even interested in going back to a fixed hardware model? Unless this will be (partly) upgradable? And would this even attract people that already have a gaming PC in the first place?

Many questions, and very curious to learn more, and also what the price will be. Seeing as they wont even subsidize the Series X 2TB model, which is already $800 and with the ongoing ram crisis, this console probably won’t be cheap

I really don’t see how they attract players back to buying their hardware. Unless it’s a decent spec pc that is plug and play at a very reasonable price it will fail.

Launch next year, most likely. Really curious to see if Sony will "let" them go first for a full year or not.

I'm always interested in new gaming hardware, though Xbox has been by far the platform I game the least on for almost a decade now. Hopefully it gives me a reason to get the new console. The idea of it also playing PC games is cool but price is going to be a big factor in things as well.

As someone’s who’s been tempted by PC gaming for years but prefers the console experience, I’m interested in this if they can keep the price below $1200.

As somebody who primarily games on consoles the new Xbox will have to be affordable and really blow the PS5 out of the water for me to change my stance on when PS6 should arrive. Obviously Sony will react to the market but I think there's still more juice to squeeze even from the base PS5 and if waiting until 2028-30 means there's a chance PS6 won't be as expensive as $700 at launch, I'm ok with that.

A massive meh! No interest in paying a premium to access Steam. Not sure how this gains more players than the series X especially with them selling their games on Playstation. Unless they do a complete 180 and start going "only this is an Xbox"

But I could actually see Microsoft pulling back on releasing Xbox games on Playstation with this console, especially since they talked about PC directly in the tweet. Like everyone has been saying, strategies can change pretty suddenly, so I wouldn't be surprised if this happens.

Personally I feel it's way too soon for a next gen upgrade, and with the tech economy being so screwed right now pricing is gonna be way up there too.
This is definitely an interesting concept, but let's not pretend this is anything other than a PC in a box that can also play XBox games. Not that that's a bad thing, but I suspect we'll see the XBox console games side of things slow down, especially from third party devs. Why spend so much time on an XBox specific version when you can just put a "Helix spec" mode in your PC version.

If this new console supports Steam, Xbox games and you can run emulators in it I am interested, provided that the pricing is not outragious. Still it is something fresh... I am curious to see how this goes.

Why do you think they announced this now? Could the launch be closer than it seems? It seems crazy to launch a console that costs over $1000... but the gaming industry is so unpredictable that nothing surprises me anymore... imagine this console launching before the PS6 and being a success?

In all seriousness, this is great news! There needs to be more, not less competition in this market. My personal opinion is that PlayStation is at it's best when they're the underdog.

And the fact that it will also play PC games, in addition to the libraries many have built up over the years, is a huge deal. The cost will certainly be a factor though.

Like is there a Windows app that does a full emulation of an XBOX UI so you can download all of your back catalog natively, or is it like a dual-boot mode, or is it all streaming, or...? I don't even care about XBOX games, I am just curious what the technical solution is.

I changed my laptop OS to Linux, never going near Windows again so a Windows Xbox can just f#@k off, I'm very interest in the new Steam offering but spec and price needs to be compelling

It being a PC does interests me. Would depend on the price though. This can't possibly be subsidised due to the market places but they can't make it too cheap for another reason as well, that is that if it's basically a PC then it forces other OEMs like Lenovo, Dell, Asus, etc to compete with them. It would take a a bite out of their market. I wonder how that will go.

The strategy here couldn't be more obvious: they're trying to retain the remaining Xbox fans/loyalists and transition them over to PC with this hybrid device.

By ensuring Xbox games will be playable they've hooked those people but I predict the actual games they release on this device will be the PC version and won't actually have a native Xbox build. This is their way of appeasing their fans who feel trapped in the ecosystem while paving the way for them to fully move to PC in the future without feeling bitter and abandoned. This will undoubtably be the last Xbox "console".

@get2sammyb I mean ofcourse people are interested in it. If it plays pc games in a console form factor and relatively seamlessly, I think that's bound to interest a lot of people. That's why there is so much buzz for the steam machine. Whether that interest translates to sales is another thing though. It will heavily depend on the price and I don't think it will cheap, heck she even mentions "lead in performance" that feels like a way to justify the much higher price tag more than anything.

Im really glad Sony will continue to have competition, so they have the need and incentive to stay competitive. Competition is necessary for innovation and pricing.

As for Xbox, i definitely will never buy one. I have an aversion to anything made by Microsoft as strongly as Trump has an aversion to the unredacted release of the Epstein files. Plus the Xbox controllers are awful!

So the initial reports of Sony pulling back PC ports makes even more sense based on this announcement alone likely knowing what was in the pipeline.

Sure it’s likely going to be more of a PC under the Xbox branding, definitely creating a different narrative with what’s been circulating around lately about their position in the industry. I’m not sure how to feel except it doesn’t excite me as before maybe because this generation was supposed to be ‘peak’ gaming but there we go I don’t think the games alone will be it’s core selling point it’s mostly going to be it’s features and aesthetics.

All in all competition is good maybe Sony can pull their fingers out a bit too and actually start thinking about what made their consoles great in the first place.

This is a $1000 to $1500 pc Sony have nothing to worry about, The ps6 can come out in 2029 with a crazy amount of exclusives and with a more affordable $500 to $600 price tag.

I have a laptop for work and the original Rog Ally that I use like you describe, basically I am now playing Resident Evil Requiem to my Ally connected to PC monitor. So, I was thinking of getting the Steam machine but since prices are increasing I my just wait and see the competition.

It's worth noting that there was no Xbox mid-gen power bump like the PS5 Pro for the consumers.

Also the PS6 probably won't deviate too much from that successful formula whereas Xbox needs and is looking to offer something different from the relatively poor selling Series S|X other than more power.

This is one of the weirdest ways to announce a console from a major player in the industry, a tweet? I already have a gaming PC and know firsthand how demanding and expensive PC gaming can be. It could be a novelty for older games and maybe they can get it to run Tarkov (maybe) but without going into the price of something like an RTX50, I can't see how it won't be so expensive that they won't risk pricing out a chunk of their existing player base. Especially if those PC games are newer games. I'm not hating on it, the whole thing sounds like a major gamble.

I want Sony to have competition, I don't want to see people (on any system) ripped off either. I haven't even turned my Xbox on since before Christmas, they ported over almost everything I cared about. They also bought all of those studios and then gave us Redfall and Starfield.

If I buy a PC for gaming I know it's entire purpose is for PC gaming, if it also plays console games then I'm going to expect some kind of trade off in performance or quality. I need to lay my eyes on this new revolutionary machine sooner than later. They need to stick something like Flight Simulator on it too and display the CPU and GPU load along with the FPS, maybe Cyberpunk 2077 for it's path tracing. I wouldn't buy that new Xbox without knowing it wasn't some kind of SouljaGame Console.

@Balaam_ They haven’t announced the actual name of the console, just a code name, so I don’t see why they’d be announcing specific supported storefronts. We’ll have to see when they actually unveil the device in a year or two.

@get2sammyb 1 reason I could see for Xbox fans wanting a new console more than PS5 fans is the whole Series S mess. You know this stuff better than I but the whole "PS5 game isn't coming to Xbox b/c S can't run it" and "this game would look better if S didn't need to support it". I think that's the reason there's no Series Pro - how can they get S to run games that high end?

So, MS puts out a new gen, Xbox Omega or whatever the rumors are, no split base, just 1 high end console. Maybe Series X can play some of those games, but MS is like, sorry we never said Series S can run Omega games. Then MS drops Series S, makes X the cheaper option, but is smart enough this time to make no promises about Omega games being able to run on X and they actually put out 1 or 2 Omega exclusives, like R & C and Returnal.

Not sure it will solve all of MS problems but I think it would be good to get that Series S albatross off of their necks.

As someone with a vast PC library without a high-end PC, who skipped the Series S|X, and has no real intention on buying a PS6, I am immensely interested in this console.

Though I like how confirming long running rumors is what Ashe considers "commitment to the return of Xbox."

More power to them. Honestly I hope it succeeds. The game industry is better with healthy competition. If it is as versatile as the rumours say I may consider it.

@Fartingale Especially since it's a Microsoft product. It will be competing against Steam's offering which has the advantage in both OS and marketplace. I think Valve's customers tend to trust their products more and actively seek them out, where Microsoft's customers are by and large forced into doing business with them thanks to their dominance in the PC OS marketplace. This is an interesting proposition, but I do think it's a generation late.

Well this was inevitable. Phil H and Sarah Bond haf already commited the time and resources and cash to this. It would probably cost more to terminate the contracts now than to release the console PC thing. I guess if it flops then that will be the end completely for xbox. And if they are releasing it as an high end machine to compete against Sony, Steam, and all the other PC manufacturers then I don't see how it would succeed.

With everyone saying they don't want Next gen yet it's weird that Xbox seems to be rushing it out. I wonder if this will push Sony to go for 2027 for PS6 or they stick to 2028.
