Over the last day or so, social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has been awash with crazy PlayStation-based rumours — and they all stem from a single post by Mega64.
On the 7th September, the comedy outfit presented a fairly provocative post, writing: "We are hearing INSANE leaks that Sony may announce something huge tomorrow. Stay tuned around 10AM PT."
The post attracted hundreds of replies, but the bigger picture was that numerous gaming-focused accounts — some with tens of thousands of followers — and even several websites, ran with the story as if it came from a trusted source.
Of course, all it takes is some incredibly basic research to learn that Mega64, as mentioned, is a comedy group who have been around for decades. This kind of prank is nothing new for them — and honestly, it's still very funny to see hapless news aggregators and so-called social media 'insiders' completely jump the gun.
In typical Mega64 fashion, the tease eventually led to a YouTube video titled 'PS6 Hardware Reveal Trailer', which at the time of writing has 156,000 views.
Riffing on Sony's decision to stop manufacturing PlayStation discs, the video unveils an imaginary console.
"No Physical Console. No Physical Limits. Imagine The Possibilities," it states.
It's a good laugh, and I'd like to think that the initial prank hasn't left too many people in a mood.
It just goes to show, though, how quickly baseless rumours can spread across social media. As noted, even the most casual glance at Mega64's profile or associated YouTube channel page reveals that they're rarely serious — but that didn't stop thousands of users from taking the relayed information at face value.
Needless to say, a lot of 'insider' posts on X have since been deleted.

Tbf if people got fooled by Mega64 making a fake comedy skit then I think that makes it even funnier
@Fighting_Game_Loser Completely agree, video's even funnier when you think about how many people were throwing them abuse on Twitter.
Lol, yikes - imagine being fooled by that!
The MGS live one they did is just about one of the best things ever made, though.
Reminds me of those nasties in The last of us.
Not going to lie, I do actually like the tagline "NO PHYSICAL LIMITS".
People are way too eager to get angry nowadays.
God I love these guys. ‘Insiders’ shown up to be complete frauds too.
While this is funny, I do find it a little scary how serious people take social media nowadays...
Gaming equivalent of “eating the Onion!”
I'm not being rude but if someone was duped by that trailer then they need to disconnect their devices. It looks like it was made on Windows Moviemaker.
@Oram77 this why u should never believe anything on Twitter lmao and social media
@Slayer25c I don't but a lot of people do....
@Oram77 I know alot people do it very sad 🤣
This is hilarious!
Nice to see Mega 64 still got it.
@For-Kier It was called Google Stadia 👍
Don’t believe everything you read online. So many problems would be solved if people bothered to do that.
Lol people getting mad at Mega64 making a skit is kinda hilarious.
Sometimes I think people likes to be fooled.
The PS6 being a big fart allegory sounds about right.
@GirlVersusGame i can't believe anyone fell for that video clip, mega64 have been doing funny skits like this for years, no common sense anymore? 🤷🏿♀️
I love that Mega64 can still fool gullible people after all these years.
haha we joke now but it's going to happen!
Ok ... it is funny but stop giving Sony ideas ... they might use them
So people were saying they weren't going to buy a PS6 because "no discs" but now get mad that a PS6 reveal wasn't actually real?
While this is pretty funny, it is the direction of travel. It's just cloud gaming isn't quite ready yet. PS6 will be a physical console, PS7 might not be.
Imagine reporting this leak as news and then having to pretend you didn't. Embarrassing doesn't come close.
Shows the state of the gaming media when some comedy group puts up a post and "respected" sites report it without checking if the post was in any way shape or form credible!
Obviously clicks are more important than actual journalism!
Imagine if the ps6 was just a dongle for the back of your telle and you had to buy a pro controller at 399.99.
At least it has lightened the mood surrounding things for a minuscule moment.
I don’t know of the person/people/team that did this skit of sorts, but good on them!
Thankfully, I don’t associate with anyone with a lack of cognitive ability so great as to believe anything like this. Or getting mentally unstable enough to get angry or frustrated by it being fake/real/a skit.
And of course, shame on those journalists reporting any of it as factual to begin with. Though I’m not much of a social media guy, so haven’t seen those either.
I’d very much like to go to the timeline I was on prior to all this internet nonsense now, ready when you are CERN. 😂🥳
"It just goes to show, though, how quickly baseless rumours can spread across social media."
Sadly it also goes to show the inane desperation of 'influencers' and 'insiders' to get likes and views to their souless regurgitated bollocks that clutters 99% of the internet.
Love these guys. Castlevania and Sakaguchi videos are pure gold.
Thanks Mega64 for the social media IQ test so we can let the fools come forth and announce themselves.😂
Joke was pretty funny too, if a little obvious.😎
People will believe everything come on son.and you know when ps6 comes they will be a ps6 pro.word up son
What's the specs?
That video is diabolical LMAO Get them on the marketing team asap
With the way sony leadership have steered the ship, it wouldnt be shocking for them to do something stupid
I don’t believe anyone is stupid enough to believe the trailer is real. Maybe they were fooled because of the tweet but if they fell for the trailer that’s someone which I would fear to interact with.
It came up on my feed, had a good chuckle.
It's good to do some "insider" cleansing every now and then xD
@EfYI I heard it has a turbo encabulator.
For a number of years now, work has been proceeding in order to bring perfection to the crudely conceived idea of a transmission that would not only supply inverse reactive current for use in unilateral phase detractors, but would also be capable of automatically synchronizing cardinal grammeters. Such an instrument is the turbo encabulator.
Now basically the only new principle involved is that instead of power being generated by the relative motion of conductors and fluxes, it is produced by the modial interaction of magneto-reluctance and capacitive diractance.
A bit off topic but relevant since this was poking fun of the Sony’s decision to stop production of physical discs, but I’m surprised you guys haven’t done a story about this:
https://www.tomshardware.com/video-games/playstation/sony-threatens-to-cut-off-customer-support-and-pursue-legal-action-over-harassment-as-backlash-to-playstations-physical-disc-phaseout-intensifies-company-to-move-forward-with-no-disc-decision-despite-several-lawsuits
Sony threatening to take away customer service and possibly take legal action against those who are “harassing” it. Story is implying that this is likely due to all the comments the company continues to get battered with over the disc decision.
This is exactly the opposite reaction they should be having and will only inflame things more.
@IntrepidWombat
I knew it! Xbots said it would just be an encabulator, but I hoped in my heart of hearts for it to be the turbo version capable of both modial interaction and, of course when talking ethereal tech, inverse reactive currents.
@IntrepidWombat
Apparently it stimulates the area of the brain known as Shatner's Bassoon.
@AdamNovice what? maybe a handful of numbnuts on twitter/Reddit which pushsquare, as usual, misinterprets as a representative sample size. Enough for them to churn out another article. The rest of us however laughed about a fun skit.
@awp69 Did you read the article? This isn’t just about online comments…
“Some of the examples of customer harassment detailed in the publication include ‘persistent and repeated, or prolonged, demands; excessive or unreasonable demands for compensation; abusive language, threats, slander, and other similar behaviors; requests unrelated to products or services; intimidating attitude; discriminatory or sexual conduct; and attacks and demands against individual employees.’
The company also listed ‘forcing someone to prostrate themselves,’ visiting company grounds without permission, and excessively asking for apologies as customer harassment, expressing willingness to use legal force if necessary.”
Harassment is a big problem in Japan, and several companies (including Hololive parent company Cover) have rolled out new policies recently.
Somebody fell for that.
@8th_Observer @awp69 If I understand correctly, that has to do with people preventing customer service in doing their jobs. Some of these acts may be done to do with discs (if any have been done at all) but this doesn’t have anything to do with people spamming disc emojis.
The PS5 generation has been largely a disappointment. Only reason the PS5 has sold around the same pace as PS4 is just because of the potential that it could be as good, but it hasn't even been close to as good. That and Xbox's continued decline have made the PS5 the default console - which doesn't make it great, it just makes it better than the alternative.
Not excited at all for the PS6. I couldn't care less if it didn't launch till 2030.
@SleeplessKnight Agreed. PS5 has been a pretty good PS4 Pro Plus if nothing else. The solid state storage is cool, and I'm glad I picked up a 2TB drive before the silicon mafia decided that Sam Altman needed RAM more than us lowly peons.
I'm not a fan of Sony exclusives at all, but it's been a decent enough piece of hardware just physically speaking. The buttons still work, the cooling solution is adequate, and the liquid metal is a nice touch. I've had one for a few years, but I think Resident Evil Requiem would have been the first game that I absolutely had to have and couldn't have had on PS4.
@IntrepidWombat I should clarify; I don't hate the PS5, I also love the SSD and it makes the PS4 seem archaically slow in comparison. And yes there have definitely been some awesome AAA games from 3rd parties this gen, which is great as Sony's 1st party output has been severely lacking compared to PS4. And to your point about the prices of storage and memory, this is the ONLY console generation where the hardware costs MORE nearly 6 years after launch than at launch.
There's currently a rumor going around that Sony will no longer include controller with the PS5. I guess we're at that portion of the stages of grief.
When he Said it would make people forget about Nintendo lol it should've been obvious
When will people learn. Is it me or are people getting dumber?
@ducklagom I don't think people are necessarily getting dumber, but it's easier than ever to witness people being dumb.
The fact that people fell for this just goes to show how irrational and delusional the “no disc no buy” people are. In fact, they were spamming the ZELDA Direct and Nintendo is the only platform holder that is still committed to physical media for the time being (Microsoft doesn’t include the full game files on discs anymore).
Iam so tired of this "haha joke i am soo funny look me now give me likes" ***** only fools fall on this
Takes a certain kind of person to be "fooled" by these kinds of things. Unfortunately, there are enough of them that people do these things online. We are just exposed to them online a lot more now.
Is this PS fans or newcomers on such platforms or 'casuals'? As if we don't know how lifecycles work of advertising, game releases, console release and more and what has changed? People, sigh.
It's a fair joke, not my humour but still, pretty good.
I mean I've seen many news channels have the console/PS logo, so what did people expect? Whatever other posts and how they are phrased.
That and 'leakers' and rumours and more. Or people just making fun. What do people expect. Can they not understand words, what difference does it make it's the internet, critical thinking skills went out the window years ago, reading between the lines, clearly not a thing most people remember at all either.
How people speak/type, clearly too hard to understand tone or thinking these days. Sigh. But people are people.
It's not Sony/PlayStation themselves, it's not April Fools, it's not a news sites, so who cares. XD People desperate for the new console or worried with news these days?
Who takes this stuff seriously. People without much brains which isn't surprising. The console is a few years out, we will know when Sony/PlayStation is ready.
But a large percentage of people are stupid on this planet so what else is new. People don't have critical thinking skills anymore.
At least some places people are intelligent enough to tell. But many aren't. Sigh.
Also the platforms talking about it is clear already to not pay attention. XD
@asdfghjklz wait, does Nintendo include the whole game in the cards?
@Krlozgod this is what makes it legit hilarious more than their video 🤣🤣
This is not a prank - but it is SOOOO funny on all the levels. Laugh at him, with him or anything in between.
I give you a ranting singer during his own damn concert.
https://www.pcgamer.com/games/fallout/breaking-benjamin-frontman-pauses-concert-to-rant-about-fallout-4-modding-beef-there-was-a-modder-in-the-community-that-was-really-mean-to-me/
The video is funny because there is a certain twisted truth in it.
I don't think the creators of the video really intended to fool anyone. It's more about highlighting in what ***** direction video gaming is heading.
Mega64 just lost all their credibility!!!!!
The Hook Lost Boys reference at the end is great, as he swiftly ignores his friend dead on the floor 😂
Funny to jest at people falling for this hoax yet this site has lived for the gospel according to Grubb for years 🤡😂
