@Apfelschteiner yes; the PS2 dug the grave, Sega nailed the coffin shut when it comes to Dreamcast. I loved the Dreamcast so much but there's no denying Sega treated it very badly. I can't help but wonder what would have become if Sega hadn't soured relationships with EA (I believe that was down to the sourcing of Japanese PowerVR graphics even though they had promised 3DFX graphics out of the States, and EA took offense to that). Their shoddy antipiracy methods ("make the GD-ROM 1.1GB, no one can copy them onto a CD-R!" "oh hai you can compress assets to fit and the Dreamcast will happily boot a CD-R") and lack of media compatibility (I wish they had put a DVD drive on it!) murdered it cold. The reason I think it's more likely Microsoft will buy Sega than Sony is because if you really dig into it, Sega helped them develop the OG Xbox and even the Dreamcast had Windows CE on it. But I'd LOVE Sony to snap them up, because never mind the big budget new stuff, Sony are -hot- on retro remakes...and I would hate to see a Skies of Arcadia remake held back by the Switch. Like you, I stopped following Nintendo; just, at a different time. I loved the Gamecube but for me it started going downhill with the Wii. Let's be clear though: I dislike Nintendo's console direction, not their handhelds (Switch barring) - they used to be "HOW POWERFUL CAN WE MAKE THIS" but the Switch is, for all intents and purposes, a 2017 midrange Android tablet. Personally I want to see one of my favourite games of all time (see above - Skies) remade completely in Unreal 5 and if ANYONE can spur Sega into doing that, based on the success of Valkyria Chronicles I think Sony could. And maybe we'll get a rerelease of one of the Saturn's greats, Panzer Dragoon Saga (screw spending £500+ on owning that). New stuff is cool too but there is such a wealth of untapped remake gold in Sega's back library. (I know what you mean about adding to your backlog; I just bought Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Forbidden West, and that's not to mention Ghostrunner free on PSPlus AND GTAV which I've never played or owned being stupid cheap...why am I like this X'D)
@Apfelschteiner I USED to be devoted to a single brand (Sega), but then I viewed Sony as having brutally murdered the Dreamcast and staunchly refused to buy any Sony products (Dreamcast is LIFE). Until 2008, when I saw a Sega game I wanted, badly, appear as a Playstation exclusive (Valkyria Chronicles). So I bought my first Playstation, a PS3. And you know what? While I love Sony to death (two PS2s, a 60GB PS3 and a PS5 covers all bases), I've realised that limiting myself to one brand only hurts my chances. I've had Xboxes before, but got rid in 2018 when I realised I only played it for Forza; but I am brand agnostic, if I buy a XSX I only see that as increasing my gaming library for the better so if Microsoft buy Sega well then an XSX will sit next to my PS5 and I will enjoy games for both platforms.
@SillyGamingIndus While I agree the PS4 is holding back what we get on PS5, I do understand why Sony are pandering to it: it has a huge install base, and people are sorta struggling to get PS5s. So the long and short of it is that PS5 exclusives are just not going to sell as well as a game that comes out on both. Imagine you bought a PS4 in '20 and Sony outright stopped supporting it the second the PS5 came out. You'd be fuming.
@commentlife can I dream they're going to acquire Sega? Because I definitely want Sony to acquire Sega. That said, historically Sega have had ties with Microsoft....if said corporation gobbles up Sega then that will be the day I drop cash on a Series X.
Might finally be time to pull the trigger on GTAV. Never actually played it. I enjoy tooling around in GTA games, never actually finished one (being an agent of destruction and going around trashing the gaf is my jam) but the three-protagonists thing always put me off...I thought it was too different, you know? But a projected £9.99, for a PS5 native version? Now that is an offer I can't refuse.
@Rhaoulos ewww Star Fox Zero. The first time I have bought a game on preorder and made a loss when I traded it in a week later (having only played an hour in that week) for how bad it was. The Wii U and Nintendo weren't kind to that game.
@KayOL77 No teacher would be complete without the "show your work" and in this case, she had the Dreamcast hoodie (Dreamcast is NOT dead, Dreamcast is LIFE and you will get my modded 'Cast from my cold dead fingers), the Mario and Luigi tattoo, and she and I both have matching Horizon Zero Dawn tattoos.
Sick, as a subscriber to Crunchy it made me sad that there were more than one streaming services to get anime from (egregious example: Teasing Master Takagi-san, all three seasons are on different services). This is only good for my library...not good for my backlog though XD but I'll take it.
"How many more Digimon Survive stories do we have to write?" I mean, you're saying this about Digimon but yet at one point there were nearly (annoyingly) daily stories about Sifu?
Serious business mode though: I am SO ON for Digimon. Have been in the fandom since Adventure 02, so 20ish years. I am pleased to see Survive has still....survived?
@KayOL77 My sister's students asked her that when she tooled around school in a Dreamcast hoodie (that I had bought her). She is a card-carrying gamer since 1993, so she was like "excuse you".
I have no opinion of the game one way or another......I dislike fantasy but I stay my butt away from it as a result. So I couldn't speak to whether the game was good or bad, because I simply haven't played it. Would I play it? No; will I badmouth it? No, I don't have a right to if I haven't played.
Right now, I won't be playing any of them; I acquired Horizon Forbidden West on Friday and will be devoting all my attention to that. But when I'm done or need a break, I am currently downloading Ghostrunner for then.
Yep, good month for me, I've wanted to try Team Sonic Racing since release after Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing Transformed which was pretty class, and I keep seeing Ghostrunner and nearly buying it (sure glad I didn't now). Could take or leave the rest but one PS4 and one PS5 game for me to add to my library ain't bad...!
@thefourfoldroot ah, a man or woman of culture I see! Skies of Arcadia is also one of my favourite games of all time, I own a PAL Dreamcast copy and an NTSC-U Gamecube one (flew to New York and bought it in Virgin Megastore on Times Square on release day oh yes) - I even modded my Dreamcast with GDEMU to preserve my discs and play it with an undub patch and VGA baked in (the PAL Skies is the only region that blocks the VGA cable) on an OSSC. Yes I really did go to those lengths to play it in the best format, and yes I am begging Sega does a PS5/XSX Unreal 5 full on remake.
@thefourfoldroot "but I like becoming godlike as time goes in and wiping the floor with everything." have you played Skies of Arcadia? The weakest character in the game becomes a freakin' tank of destiny if you upgrade her along the right path. Fina achieves god-like status if you get Final Cupil, it's almost sad to see enemies getting thoroughly stomped by her (but not sad enough to not be hilarious when you one-shot everything).
I'll pass on this one, I don't like high fantasy and I am not a fan of Souls-likes. Controversial opinions, I know, but I much prefer things towards the turn-based scifi RPG ilk. Why yes, I do love Xenosaga and wish Namco would do an HD remake....
PSA: Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 native version is £19.99. Picked it up yesterday as I was waiting for the patches and native version to pull the trigger, how nice of CDPR to throw it directly on sale on all platforms immediately I very nearly bought the Steam version, but a/ it's 24.99 right now and b/ if I turn raytracing on, Trixx be damned my RX 6700 XT will fall over in a foetal position and cry itself to death (4K monitor, COULD do Sapphire Trixx upscaling I guess....)
@theheadofabroom We don't, as far as I know unless you can get it in one of the many shops we have that imports stuff from the US (my local sweet shop imported full-fat Vanilla Coke from the States and I was ON IT, it was criminal they discontinued it in 2003 here). I just wanted to make a cool reference before anyone else. XD
@Voltan Horses for courses, and I KNOW I'm in the minority for championing VIII. A lot of people didn't like it, but for the same reasons I loved it. IX to me was just...I dunno, I couldn't get invested in the characters or the world. They felt flat or cliché, but then I DID only play five hours. I also felt the battle system was a step back from VIII (but then I loved junctioning 100 Sleeps to Attack and then sending freakin' everything to sleep with just one well-placed gunblade to the face).
hmm, I could stand to go without a Final Fantasy IX remake (I tried it, got five hours in, it just bored me) but I would quite like, after VII Remake, an VIII Remake. Final Fantasy VIII is by far my favourite Final Fantasy, and imagine that sound design and soundtrack remastered........(no real-time battle system though please, I don't much like VII Remake's aRPG style). Balamb Garden in 4K...be still my beating heart.
I picked this up in the Steam sale at Christmas... Mediocre at best. Great music, sure (but they got the mighty Yasunori Mitsuda to help there), but that's all it has going for it. Generic boring fantasy and I don't know why they released it on PS5, it feels like it firmly belongs on PS4 and Vita, doesn't do anything special that only the PS5 can do. I'm two hours in and really don't care for it (as if you couldn't tell).
@GravyThief Isn't it just <3 When I worked electronics retail I would frequently put Memories of Green and Manoria Cathedral from his remaster on our speakers when demoing them for older customers <3
Ha, as long as we're clear on one thing - that Yasunori Mitsuda can do no wrong. If you don't know of it, the Radical Dreamers live version of Arni is gorgeous, I am listening to it right now as I work <3
@WaveBoy did you say Jade Cocoon, that vastly underrated Playstation Pokemon-but-with-dragons that was absolutely awesome and so misunderstood? Count me in.
@GravyThief Yes but I think they mean they've made it shinier than the PSX soundtrack, maybe we're getting like Blake-Robinson-Chrono-Trigger levels of remastered soundtrack.
@rjejr "This game never came to the EU? How did that happen?" Chrono Trigger didn't either until the DS rerelease in 2008 - nor Xenogears, at all. Publishers tend to think we in the PAL region are only interested in FIFA, which is patently untrue. A LOT of very good games are limited run here (especially RPGs) and don't get me started on what Namco did to Xenosaga here. >(
I'm IN. Only thing they can do to screw this up is not release it in PAL territories...again. I'll be playing through for the first time, since as I said previously my PSX (NTSC-U copy) playthrough setup is garbage.
@cheonseojin I got thoroughly sick of seeing all the non-stop coverage on it, you'd think it was the Most Most Important Thing in Gaming™. I however don't see any appeal in it. Pass.
Eh, I'll skip everything but Horizon. Nothing there appeals. Gran Turismo would have been of interest, but that it is essentially going to be a PS4 game except in the replays doesn't inspire me to drop PS5 game money on it. Yes, graphics matter to me.
dang ._. if it looks that good on PS4, we're in for a treat on PS5...I've had my copy preordered for months, getting the limited edition with the figurine and CAN'T WAIT. Between Horizon, getting R+C for Christmas and my stupidly long backlog going back to games from 1995, I may have to book some time off work...
hmm...I'm all up for a revisit to Arcadia Bay but I would have liked a PS5 remaster. I know it's very stylised but it would have been interesting to see what new spin on the visual style could be achieved on our golden child hardware.
@AV_aka_577_ex-Xbox I keep flip-flopping between owning WD:L and trading it in. If they make it free I won't ever have to wrestle with myself to own it, so I am on for that!
@Porco no one said anything about throwing it out, I love having a physical copy (if anything I feel bad that I unsealed it, it was even in its original wrapper when I acquired it in '20), I would just prefer to play on newer hardware and thanks to my never having experienced the game and its unique battle system I'm pretty sure my first play through save is garbage. Being 20 years late to the party (I'm in the PAL region and only got around to it on my recently cfw PS3 because I wanted to play on real hardware on an actual TV but don't have an NTSC-U PlayStation) doesn't help. Hell even if it's like the Final Fantasy VIII remaster that's enough, but I'm holding out for more than that because why then would Nvidia highlight it like they did if it was just an upscale?
I am on my first ever playthrough of Chrono Cross (finally got it two years ago for my birthday from the US as we didn't get it here), if they are remaking I may abandon my PS1 playthrough for the remaster. Just, make it worth it Square....
I will die on the hill of "they're announcing remakes of Xenosaga 1 2 and 3", since Yasunori Mitsuda is involved... Anyone checked what Shinji Hosoe and Yuki Kajiura are up to lately....?
so here's my take: I would like to see Sony acquire Sega's publishing arm. I don't care for Persona but there's no denying it's an important Sony identity. For my own reasons, I'd like to see it as Sony are hot on remakes lately, and I would very much like Sony to kick Sega into gear and do an Unreal 5, PS5 exclusive remake of Skies of Arcadia (and perhaps a sequel, though the original tied itself up nicely). Hell, if I was good enough at 3D modelling, I already know how to code...I'd start it off myself. Spoilers: I suck at 3D work.

Re: Long Rumoured Chrono Cross Remaster Could Be Revealed in February
I am on my first ever playthrough of Chrono Cross (finally got it two years ago for my birthday from the US as we didn't get it here), if they are remaking I may abandon my PS1 playthrough for the remaster. Just, make it worth it Square....
Re: Fans Think PlayStation Might Be Teasing PS1, PS2, PS3 Backwards Compatibility
I will die on the hill of "they're announcing remakes of Xenosaga 1 2 and 3", since Yasunori Mitsuda is involved... Anyone checked what Shinji Hosoe and Yuki Kajiura are up to lately....?
Re: Poll: Does Sony Need to Take Action After Microsoft's Activision Buyout?
so here's my take: I would like to see Sony acquire Sega's publishing arm.
