Update: Just as we warned, it really wasn't worth getting excited over the PlayStation Japan tease — not unless you're a massive fan of popstar Kenshi Yonezu. The now infamous tweet was indeed teasing a new Japanese PlayStation advert — but it has absolutely nothing to do with backwards compatibility.
The numbers 1, 2, and 3 are lyrics in the advertisement — again, just as we had theorised.
Now look, we know everyone's eager to see what's next for Sony — ourselves included! — but the company clearly has a lot more patience than we do.
Anyway, you can see the new ad for yourself below.
Original Story: A PlayStation Japan tweet has blown up overnight, because fans think that it might be teasing PS1, PS2, and PS3 backwards compatibility. Said tweet teases a new PlayStation ad — launching on the 23rd January — which will feature a new song from Japanese popstar and music producer Kenshi Yonezu.
So where's all the backwards compatibility speculation coming from? Well, the teaser highlights the numbers 1, 2, and 3. That's the date on which this teased advertisement is going to air — again, the 23rd January, styled as 1.23 — but why this date, and what's the advert for? Could the chosen date tie into this being about PS1, PS2, and PS3 games?
Honestly, it seems like a bit of a reach to us — but the emphasis on 1 2 3 does raise an eyebrow. We don't know why Sony would push such a big deal in Japan specifically, though — and through Twitter alone. And, let's be real for a moment, the numbers could quite easily relate to the song itself, and this is simply just the start of a new advertising campaign in Japan.
If something does happen (we're growing more cynical by the minute) then it would also mean that Sony is planning to drop a huge announcement in the West either very late on a Saturday night, or relatively early on a Sunday. Unorthodox, but we suppose that stranger things have happened.
What do you make of this? As always, we'd advise against getting hyped beyond all reason in the comments section below.

I'm not getting my hopes up! You're getting your hopes up! 😤
...but for real I hope this is a worthwhile tease.
All Sonic, Rayman, Crash, Mortal Kombat, and The Simpsons games!
Yes please Sony, that’d be lovely!!
This is clearly just going to be some weird advertising campaign in Japan. The song will feature the words 1, 2, 3 or something. I can see why people are getting whipped up into a frenzy over this, but I remain incredibly sceptical!
It's just something for a Japanese advert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhOobsomWnI
Nothing to see here.
@ShogunRok me too tbh. But…
Sony (PlayStation) has been operating in full Bowie mode the last couple of years, so who knows? Why not making a huge announcement on a Saturday midnight…
@ShogunRok This x 100
Ugh, I'm going to be refreshing the feeds all bloody night now just in case.
yeah, not gonna hold our by breath for this. It might not be true for all we know
Nothing to see. See nothing here first at PS! 😁
Maybe it's the date for the first Spartacus reveal?
It’s possible. Especially as the retro colours are used. I hope so. I’d get a good few older games if they are cheap and they have additional trophy challenges added. Needs to be priced right though.
Not getting my hopes up but I like the theory!!!
@LiamCroft my guess was tiers for Sparticus but oh well. Just post an officer Barbrady gif here XD
if that's a way to play oblivion on ps5 without psnow then yes!
Mobile gaming announcement incoming, hopes dashed.
Sony, now is the time to buy some goodwill and give people more reasons to go Playstation, not carry on with the cock-teasing (even if it is unintentional).
I think they're releasing everything we have ever asked for or secretly wished for.
That's definitely interesting! Would love it to be true but I'll keep my expectations in check.
i mean PS japan has leaked a big thing before lol.
Is it not like incredibly likely that it’s just something on the 23rd of January?
There’s no reason why we won’t see it all via streaming. It would be really good if existing licences carried over and you could buy individual titles as well as a sub.
@nessisonett oh and I “suppose” it’s just a coincidence that PlayStation 1, 2 and 3 also exist, huh?
@nessisonett it is something on 1.23. It’s also something with a 1-2-3 theme, apparently. I bet it’s nothing major though, unless it only launches in Japan first (which would be weird for today’s PlayStation)
Its nothing, Sony doesn't tease or built excitement before anything anymore. They just announce what they want on the Blog randomly. Dont get yourselves worked up for disappointment people.
Wow if this ends up becoming true that would be huge. Come on Sony get in the trenches and bring in the goods!!!!
@Liamcroft killed that one quickly 😄 thats definitely what it is!
Clearly Sony has secured the rights to Dusty Bin and Ted Rogers's likeness. Cant wait for the game!
While I have no expectations that this will ever happen, or even correctly for that matter, only thing I would like out of this is that if it is true, the PS3 store would open up access on the PS5. That way we could have access to our old purchases of games we want instead of having to (re)buy from a limited library that we may not even care for.
I just want to play Kurushi again... and Mr. Domino!
Maybe its the countdown for MS's next dick move.
Would be great to have some stone cold classics from PS 1,2 and 3 tho.
@nessisonett as Nathan Drake would say "well thank you captain obvious!" 😉
I keep my hopes up, but in check.
Feels like Smash speculation again 😅
don't think it's backwards compatibility. though I don't really care for it so it wouldn't matter either way for me.
Removed - unconstructive
This for sure isn't that. But I'm still holding out that it will happen down the line. It would for sure tip the scales for me to get a PS5. Sooooo many classics that are inexplicably MIA.
I will die on the hill of "they're announcing remakes of Xenosaga 1 2 and 3", since Yasunori Mitsuda is involved... Anyone checked what Shinji Hosoe and Yuki Kajiura are up to lately....?
They wouldn't tease something like this on just the Japanese account. Never get your hopes up unless it also appears on the main @PlayStation account.
Well, they certainly aren't teasing a buyout of Activision-Blizzard. 🤣
@Medic_Alert I want it for nostalgia more than anything else.
I often say that I want a legacy library on PlayStation, but I'm not sure how much I'd use it.
Vagrant Story I would definitely play if it was on it. Maybe Nightmare Creatures if they had the rights to put that on it too.
MDK would be great to play again.
But yeah, as I said I'm not sure how much I'd actually play those games.
No, no, no it's PS1 & PS23 BC (or is that Forward Compatible) It's going to be NOTHING, so nothing to see here so move along.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
Yeah, let me play all the digital games I already own! Xbox has been doing this for nearly a decade...happy that MS is finally making Sony step-up.
Can we please get store refunds next? Sony and Nintendo are still in the dark ages when it comes to digital storefront consumer friendliness.
Also, maybe it's just me, but I have to delete my payment method on PSN after I buy something or Sony will, no joke, re-enable auto-renew (without asking me) and re-enable all dead subscriptions I have. It's happened at least 10 times. That's garnered a ton of negative emotions toward Sony over the past 5+ years from me.
@poetwarlord I am assuming its the Project Spartacus reveal
Real question: is backwards compatibility something they could just patch in with an update, or does the hardware have to be built around allowing it?
Unless the suggestion was that they were gone re-release PS1-3 titles digitally, which doesn’t really seem like BC lol 😅
State of Play date? I prefer that to backwards compatibility.
If they were going to announce something big there's not a chance they'd do it via Japanese channels first.
PlayStation brand is well and truly western orientated now.
No reason to blow this tweet out of proportion until if and when backwards compatibility is officially announced. There was also a lot of rumours before the PS5 launch about BC, but that naturally didn't happen.
Even if it’s not something big, they knew what they were doing.
Therefore maybe it’s on the cards for another time 😉
F all to do with back compatibility...clutching at straws more like.
My friend's cousin's uncle's boyfriend works with a lady, who has husband that delivers food to Sony. He said this is in reference to Spartacus. Tiers 1, 2, 3
I'm in the beta for the new firmware, it is backcompat. The way they're getting around PS5 not reading CDs (or not having disc drive) is sort of a reverse remote play. You put the disc in your PC and run an app over there and your PS5 reads it over the network.
If only. That would be very welcome.
They had us in the first half
Lol. This shows how deaf Sony are to their PS users base desires. Using retro colouring and system numbers is inevitably going to get hopes up.
People are just desperate now and grasping at straws, I doubt they will be announcing backwards compatibility at this event.
However I of course would love for this to actually happen...even though my gaming backlog would grow ALOT.
If ps5 gets backwards compatibility & not PS4 I'm guna be really p***** off because it's easily capable of emulating PS1 & PS2 but they just didn't bother apart from the very few PS2 games they added I get not being able to play 'next gen' games on my PS4 but not being able to play older games on it would be a kick in the teeth
Looks like it was false
Anyone ever wonder if Sony does this stuff on purpose to gauge reactions?
@Would_you_kindly Expect it might not be worth for an older console. It would be harder to implement (less power makes it harder even if it's still possible) and to implement as properly. By focusing on just PS5 it would be a selling point and it would help them focus efforts on one set of better emulation. Only PS5 for this is completely reasonable.
@Jaz007 all Sony did was post the start of an advertising campaign on a regional account on Twitter, and people started adding 2+2 and getting 5. The 1 2 3 in the clip refers to a song that was posted by Sony on YouTube 5 days ago! It was easy to see the Tweet referred to the ad campaign. Nothing really to do with Sony trying to gauge reactions. If anything gaming websites blew it all up out of proportion as usual with their obsession of treating Twitter like a source of news. Nobody outside of Japan would've ever been any the wiser that this even existed 😆
@Jaz007 the ps5 doesn't need another selling point whenever it's in stock it's sold out straight away I've been wanting backwards compatibility for years & for them to finally implement it but only on a console that's extremely hard to get would be a big f*** you to everyone that owns a PS4 especially those of us that upgraded mid gen to PS4 pro
Well, with the huge loss Sony took this week, this didn’t play out well.
@Would_you_kindly I bought multiple PS4s, and a Pro and now have moved on to the PS5 and would be perfectly fine if the PS4 was left for dead.
@Grimwood I wanna play Tomb Raider 1, 2 and 3 but I don’t want to put in any effort beyond turning on my PS5 and downloading them.
@Grimwood agreed. Its a minority view but it gets a lot of traction because of how MS has made it central to their business model. We've had B/C for decades and nobody ever bought a new generation primarily because they were excited to play old games. I had countless Spectrums, Amigas and consoles that could play older games but I bought those machines to play new improved games that were previously technically impossible.
Retro gaming is another thing though. I do like old games on old systems as a nostalgia trip and a reaquaintence of cherished days gone by. That I'm all for.
@Grimwood I definitely would pay Sony to play the first three generations of PlayStation games on PS5, they would make a killing off me alone 🙂
I have PS2 Slim Japan + PS2 Fat USA + PS3 Slim + PS4 Slim hooked onto my TV so I can play all PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 games with actual disc and actual machines.
“Why would anyone wanna play old games…. “
(We this these posts over and over)…
Maybe some of us aren’t obsessed with only thinking games that are five mins old being good.
@Grimwood why not?
Y'all really need to stop over analyzing everything. Fortunately, I am a fan of Kenshi Yonezu so I thought the ad was pretty cool.
@Stocksy Jim Ryan said a few years ago
"That, and I was at a Gran Turismo event recently where they had PS1, PS2, PS3 and PS4 games, and the PS1 and the PS2 games, they looked ancient, like why would anybody play this?"
Yet looking at this thread alone I say most ppl do want to play old games ( myself included )
@Integrity I'm sure not alot of ppl here got the dusty bin reference ,but I did and I chuckled ,thank you
Wtf was that.wow that was horrible.word up son
@Martsmall 😁👍
Wow Sony! Never cease to amaze me.
That ad was horrible.
And truly a shame you got so many hopes up for something that loads of folks have zero interest in.
I didn't expect it to be BC for older generations, although I definitely would cheer if it ever happened one way or another, and without a ridiculous price tag attached to it. I'll gladly pay as long as it's reasonable.
Using those retro colors combined with number of the systems you've been neglecting for years is gutsy. I'm well aware of the great remakes that happened (Crash Trilogy, CTR, Spyro Trilogy, Demon Souls etc.) but let's be honest here, Sony hasn't even scratched the surface of the all the awesome dormant IPs in its legacy library.
It's really time Sony puts in some effort in reviving more iconic IPs, especially given the time it takes to make new games. We've seen how Cyberpunk and No Man's Sky were rushed to a deadline and released a broken mess (and yes, looking at you as well GTA Trilogy Defective Edition), while both of these could've been top notch if given the time they needed.
No one asks to stop production of new games. Those are most important for PS5, and nothing should ever interfere with this. Can't wait for pre-ordered CE of Horizon FW (PS5) to arrive.
Microsoft has been quite busy!
We need you to get busy as well! If it's not an option to battle with MS on the acquisition front, find other ways. Time to create some momentum and make sure PlayStation stays the best place to play!! Embracing your legacy IPs could be a great step in the right direction, but there's definitely lots more needed to stay on top.

@Stocksy I've also got all the previous consoles it would just be alot more convenient being able to play all my games on 1 system
@OmegaStriver so 'screw everyone that can't get a ps5 yet because I've got one' ?
1,2,3 is how the original PS was marketed in Japan because it launched on 12/3. Push square should know this stuff. This is a lot of effort to tease an ad. Just sayin'.
Everyone complains about lack of BC but be honest - how often do you pull out the PS3 or PS1 you have sitting around? I do about once a year with Ps1.
Sony the mutes dont tease anything anymore. Anyone that thought this was a tease is a fool and just wanting something from Sony since there's really nothing to be excited about in the near future.
@Arnna I play my PS3 all the time. I just platinumed Dead to Rights and Pure.
@Would_you_kindly Yup.
I’d want them to move on even if I didn’t have one. I don’t like games being hindered by previous gen consoles.
I once beat my time on Outrun Coast to Coast by 1.23 seconds. I reckon they are teasing a new Outrun for PS5.
If your really that passionate about playing PS1, PS2, PS3 games. Then buy the old systems and play them when you want. I have all Sony legacy tech, with some great classics. For me personally didn't buy a PS5 for retro gaming. Microsoft have this feature to pack out there piss poor selection of games. Oh look you can play Panzer dragoon orta for a fee.
Love the ad are those supposed to be spartans...inside walls? That's so mad 😂
Weird advert but cool at the same time. I guess it’s a good advert then.
@Martsmall
And you said yourself he was at a Gran Turismo event talking about PS1 PS2 GT games. 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks for the context.
I know this is unrealted but some reason my purchased tv shows on playstation has missing episodes ( the 100 i payed for all 6 seasons obviously before sony stopped selling movies and TV series on playstation) now I finally buy season 7 of the 100 on,(amazon prime also has 5 of 7 sessions on prime) so now its out in uk was gonna rewatch but i have missing episodes on payed product 😔 how do I fix this?
We will never get ps1,ps2 or ps3 backwards compatibility, just get over it.
Did people actually think anything like BC was going to come out of this? I knew right away this would be nothing special but everyone overhyped it and is now blaming Sony for disappointment when they came to the conclusion themselves. Also as much as BC is handy I swear a lot of people complain they need it and barely use it. It's handy for the odd game and having to not get out an old system but it's one of those things I see people screaming for.
Nope only the silly ones as everything was explained in the tweet. People keep begging for backwards compatibility but in truth hardly anyone would use it.
Sony had to know how people would interpret this
Aargh, this could have been awesome
@Arnna I play my PS2 more than my PS4 Pro
@Iver what was fun while it lasted?
@Iver oh so I take it it wasn't bc for all the previous playstations huh? any idea where I can find what it really was if that's the case.
edit: nevermind lol
@Sakisa Hey you do you but you’re in a small minority. May I ask why? What games do you still play? I’m genuinely curious, not trying to flame you or anything
@Sakisa Also don’t get me wrong I’d like BC especially with PS1 and 3 games. I played PS2 the least. The BC of PS1 games on PS3 is shaky and unstable AF. I recently tried to play some Capcom fighters like Xmen COTA and Darkstalkers on PS3 and it was basically broken. Bishi Bashi Special and Micro Machines worked a lot better but the experience was mainly fraught with all kinds of game breaking glitches.
@Shepherd_Tallon how much time did you waste
@Sladey69 Very little in the end. Liam posted his comment clarifying that it was nothing pretty quick.
I had already been in the pub at that point too so I may have forgotten almost immediately. 😌
😅 fair play, as soon as I saw it luckily someone followed up saying it was an ad so I pretty much did the same
@ScottyG ps5 and os4 do not have the ability to read CD technology, they removed it, so no, from a physical media perspective you cannot play ps1 or some ps2 titles.
I hope sony makes another astro game.
For me it feels like their new mascott, and earns a huge game.
I realy enjoyed this small game, especialy the haptic features.
