This is what the common rental leased UE can do for the current generation of consoles. I still think Sonys bespoke engine for Horizon is the one to beat for open world games. CDPR should have continued to develop their own engine for the type of games that they make.
I think people are so surprised judging by the comments on YouTube by how this looks. This is what the current generation has been capable of all along! If we see a new horizon just for this generation of PlayStation then Guerilla games will be able to do even more.
Looks aside this Witcher 4 won’t have the same ethos of 3. As CDPR has had shake-ups and their recent moves told me what I need to know. It’s the OG blokes that make the game not the name of the studio whom owns the IP.
The prices are justified. Games have more polygons, better voice acting, better animations, more pixels, more in game systems etc.. I could go on. Like every other product in the consumer economy, the price has gone up. If the prices stay low then more professionals will lose their jobs. As people in the gaming industry don't work for free. They want good compensation for their technical skill sets and benefits. Both of which the companies have to pay for. The increase in prices for games is in line with everything else in the vanity consumer goods industry.
People need to be more concerned about the costs increases for basic human needs things. Like food to eat and a roof over our heads. Outside of that everything else is just vanity and one isn't entitled to vanity goods if they don't have a surplus of funds to have fun in the west.
Lastly this is why people should have supported physical media as it gives people a chance to get used copies.
Credit where credit is due. The artist needs to be compensated. Since this is a live service game, if I was the artist I would settle for a lump sum of money plus a continuous royalty fee. As if the game is wildly popular then the artist deserves a continuous cash flow.
@RudeAnimat0r that’s not how private or public entities usually operate. For private companies the owner can have their ideas take priority. As for a public company the board and corporate overlords can dictate to a studio their production. Lastly people are free to start their own studios with their own ideas. I see nothing conceded about focusing on the founders ideas which in his case are widely popular.
Since they are doing things “right” from their perspective. I wonder how they will explain how the main character in this game got the two sword technique which Miyamoto Musashi is credited with creating. Not many trained blokes even used it in the passing years in real life as swords require strength. Unless the time frame for this story is after him then it could make slight sense why the style is shown for the main character in this story.
@Rich33 a fully agree about a finished product being a requirement for justifying the new unit price. Everything else we buy in life we accept as complete. I cannot imagine buying a car full price that will have modules added later and software updated later so that the vehicle can operate as advertised. Also imagine paying full price for a movie in which the special effects aren’t polished and the frames for movie scenes are out of order. People would not accept that.
Gamers need to put even more pressure on these studios to release a full base product that is playable in the first patch of the game.
@themightyant I’m not salty against these critics nor any journalist. Why would I be? As they aren’t the doers as in the ones providing tangible value (products). It’s easy to work with any company in the testing phase of any product. Having not been a part of the development cycle. I just don’t see why people place these critics so highly as if they were the creator of all this art that we value. If companies paid DF for consulting to fix their code and the game released with a DF logo on the box then it would be different. However that won’t happen at all as that would be having real skin in the game.
@MrPeanutbutterz I understand that point and that they review the tech that others work with/develop. I just think many place them too high up in the age of digital media. Folks just need to enjoy the entertainment and not focus so much on these critics. As it’s easier to critic people’s work after the fact. I’d have more respect for those blokes if they contributed to optimizing code and games released with a DF logo on it. Not just saying well we noticed the game doesn’t run well here.
Perhaps FPS foundry can provide actual value and fix the code for this game. Along with fixing the code for every other game they critic with their analysis software. Many people are still enjoying this game.
@RatmCky i think people are so accustomed to the fake happy world in which only “likes” are displayed. I.e. YouTube and sites like this one. The real world doesn’t work like this. Just because people put a bad input doesn’t mean it’s review bombing. People just need to let the entertainment art speak for itself and if people don’t like it then so be it. Personally I would love for all sites on the net to show dislikes along with likes.
@carlos82 of course mate. Anything bespoke or purpose built will always be better than a multi purpose tool. I.e. a purpose built sports car or purpose built off-roader. The unreal engine has always been the toyota camry of game engines. Sure its good for all the shoes if has to fill but it will never be exceptional at any one thing as they cater to many clients whom don't want to spend the money on their own engines.
@Quintumply If I was rockstar I'd charge 100$ for the base game. Especially considering how ambitious this project seems to be. If it doesn't launch at 100$ then it will be 100$ at at some point in the next decade after release. Perhaps the PS6 definitive edition haha.
Before people praise the price they need to remember that Take Two Interactive has Rockstar as one of their subsidiaries. So they can afford to have this "low" price. Its likely that this game will be shorter and since its not open world, less going on from a development standpoint.
@Rich33 people are really stressing over these price increases. If we look at the past 2.5 decades, console games haven't really gone up much in price compared to the value provided. More polygons, better voice acting, bigger games, etc. These things cost time and money.
The price will go up next generation just like everyone else and just like every other vanity good (unnecessary) in life. Games really haven't gone up much in price over the past 2.5 decades. People just need to prioritize what games they buy. And if people supported physical media then one could get a used game later if the budget cannot add more vanity goods.
@thefourfoldroot1 a business gets to set the price for their goods. Doesn't matter if its considered "old." Besides many PS gamers are enjoying it. Forza horizons are worth the money.
Team Xbox isn't going to help out SE much with their ambitious sells targets for final fantasy games. As the Xbox base is accustomed to paying their "high" subsidized gamepass fees. I say high as reading what people say about the price one would think its 200$ a month. Even so a new game costs 70 dollars digitally and subsidized gamepass would still be a good deal.
@LifeGirl exclusivity isn't over for consoles. Sony and Nintendo have a lot of convincing to do to get folks to buy into their ecosystem. Exclusive features and software is the way. Same for any brand in any industry. As it stands now both Sony and Nintendo aren't huge publishers nor show any signs of becoming one. Also both cannot afford to outright do large acquisitions like MS. So both firms want people on their ecosystems only if possible.
What needs to happen is that game studios reduce the cost of game development and leverage automation tools (AI) to assist with mundane game development tasks. SE is going to be disappointed because team Xbox has never really been into these types of JRPGs and these days the base doesn't really purchase games. SE as an entity just needs to be more lean and efficient. Lastly PC and consoles are two different bases. PlayStation games going to the PC crowd doesn't cannibalize PS sells. As plenty of casual gamers know PS and buy into the platform.
@ApostateMage yea exactly. RDR2 looked like the trailers for the most part and the 30fps was playable on the consoles it was designed for. GTA 6 has been developed fully for this current generation of consoles and they have had a lot of time. So I’m confident it will look nearly similar to the trailers just like RDR2. This generation people are so used to cross generation PS4 Xbox one games holding things back thinking it’s the series s. With time to learn the hardware talented developers can create great art.
Looks like Sony did get some marketing rights. As at the end of the trailer it did say captured on the PS5. MS better leverage that the Series S is the cheapest way to play this game!
I tried to get into the first one but just could not. But like all RPGs there is a lot to do and a gamer definitely gets their moneys worth. Especially compared to other games that cost the same amount of money. I TRULY have no problem with RPGs costing more than other games as they provide a lot of entertainment value and multiple play throughs. What’s funny to me is that people are paying that much for a digital access right. When the physical game still costs the same and Sony still puts its base games on discs.
@OldGamer999 it’s really that companies have expenses just like every other for profit company. The people that they employ need compensation and benefits. The company has energy and rent or a mortgage to pay as. Couple that with increased demand for developing these games which have more polygons, more content, better voice acting etc…. I could really go on. Then people are sad when companies let go of people for various reasons. The price of games is really still so low and only recently have the prices gone “up” over the past two decades. Meanwhile everything else in the world has gone up. Especially needs and gaming is just vanity at the end of the day.
Of course of the CEO is happy that the Xbox subsidiary is doing well on PS. As PS owners mostly buy games still. And subsidized gamepass isn’t free. The CEO would be even more pleased if subsidized gamepass went away and Xbox owners had to mostly buy games again even if it’s just digital “licenses.” One can argue if MS did that they would lose the Xbox fan base. Which is possible. But multiplat publishers only care about making money everywhere.
@PlatinumMikey I hope that MS will come up with something that latches on or resonates with many people. As competition is good. I hope that their handheld and next Xbox plans work out very well.
@PlatinumMikey yup! If Xbox was more competitive and sells were like PS since the Xbox one, then subsidized gamepass would look different. Then this generation the series consoles would likely be poised to win. Unfortunately Xbox has suffered still from that Xbox one initial reveal. Then they got beat up the entire generation about how weak the console is by outlets like frames per second foundry. Then this generation MS launches a more powerful console and an affordable place to play next generation. Only to still be rejected with power not mattering now, and the series s holding us back statements. Meanwhile PS4 was hiding in plane site. None of this helped the perception of the Xbox brand to the average consumer.
It’s going to be an interesting case study in the future. As MS has a history of revealing concepts or products well before people are ready. I.e. tablets and what the Xbox one wanted to do based on consumer media trends.
Subsidized subscriptions aren’t the future for gaming. It’s easy to see why they have become stagnant. Getting access to all candy in the store for one little fee is cool at first. Then after some time it’s not special anymore. And having rushed to try all of the candy, one will beg for something new. Putting pressure on the candy makers to offer such quality choices that will be edible. Gaming, tv subscriptions, and movies are the same. One can argue that the best games are from previous generations and that previous generations put out more content. Compared to this current generations messed up output schedule due to the cough era and companies using data sets in front of them. Cough cough Sony with their live service fantasizes.
And I don’t believe that new IPs or new titles should be on a service immediately as the developer needs to make money or loose money for a poorly received product. Subsidizing gaming isn’t the way to go.
No surprise here. Inflation impacts all industries and the gaming industry is not immune. Remember these entities need to pay for employees whom are just like you and I. Also research and development for the next generation is factored in too. Then there is the fact that China and Taiwan make nearly all of the semiconductors for the world. So production is competitive and those two countries can set the terms. Its why the switch 2 is priced higher despite it not being a "powerhouse" like many outcry about. The days of being able to reduce the costs of console hardware are gone. Especially as the cost of making the software has gone up and being outcrying about that. So it is a delicate balance that these companies have to take. Especially Sony and Nintendo whom aren't backed up by windows which is like a reserve currency for the Xbox subsidiary. At the end of the day, Gaming is a vanity hobby and is still relatively cheap for what we are all getting for entertainment.
Well that’s so unfortunate! I reject the idea that my physical game disc doesn’t have the base game on it, therefore not playable in the future without internet. This isn’t the way for console gaming if there is to be physical media. MS is just being cheap with their blu-rays, not wanting to pay for the latest version, and wanting to control the narrative. I understand that products are rushed out the door. But if I cannot play the base game from a physical disc. That is a huge problem for me for preservation.
@OldGamer999 you miss the point mate and are thinking for today. Which is what these entitles want for the internet of everything. Just because everyone does something doesn’t mean it’s right. As most people aren’t Shepards whom can see the bigger picture. The precedent has been to put full games on a disc with whatever patch version is available at the time when a game is written to a disc at the factory. Sure games get updates no one is disputing that is the trend because the art form is continuously perfected. By not having the full base game on a disc that limits those of us in the future whom actually hold onto our physical media. It’s not acceptable for me to have a physical disc in which I need to connect my obsolete console to the internet just to “quickly” play again. The beauty of previous generations is that I’m able to play anything with my young nephews on demand if they want to hook up an older console. Which I don’t keep my older consoles on the net. I don’t accept these trends for console gaming. But hey I’ll let everyone else enjoy the internet of everything world.
@Northern_munkey most companies still put the full game on the disc. Whatever patch version that is. MS just doesn’t want to pay for newer Blu-ray Discs to put to full game onto a disc. Also they want everyone to be tied to them. As this is the internet of everything way. Entities want people always tied to them.
@The_Decline_99 the characters for 4 and 5 are weak sauce. The blokes in the originals trilogy are good IMO. The story felt more real. The gears trilogy is similar to the mass effect trilogy. Then there was mass effect andromeda. Clearly a different ethos.
Sizes won’t be smaller the further games and assets grow with more polygons. It’s a delicate balance to get the consoles to do what they do for a very reasonable price. People just need to learn patience and install what they desire to presently play. Not a big deal. If it is just to buy more storage options which are available. Besides this game appears to be quality based off of the Xbox release.
The PS3 was worth the high cost. It was a truly impressive state of the art machine at the time. With a more bespoke SOK. Also worth noting some PS3s launched with PS2 hardware onboard it. Sony was betting on a lot of technologies at the time. Blu-ray and let us not forgot all of the physical storage cards it could receive. Contrast this to the very cheap PS4 and its less impressive SOC. PS5 is cheaply designs too. Sony learned its lesson that console gamers want a lot but the price has to be very low regardless of inflation numbers. So we get cheap PlayStations hence forth.
People can always buy a switch 1 which will likely still be on sell till December. No one is forcing anyone to participate in any hobby spending their spare money or going into debt. Nintendo will be fine. I think the switch 2 price is align with inflation as are the cost of new games. People that work in the gaming industry demand good compensation and benefits too. Just like the very people whom work in other industries and want stuff.
@Ogbert best comment. I have been telling people this. At the end of the day gaming is a luxury hobby. Gaming studios have expenses too. People get sad when studios get shut down or gaming industry employees get axed. Well folks people need to buy the products to pay for wages, benefits, company expenses, and new products. Gaming is still a cheap form of entertainment at the end of the day.
@MrPeanutbutterz Gaming is one of the cheaper hobbies anyone can do. Which is why I defend every few years when developers ask for more coin for their products. I’m in agreement with you. Like you I have spent and still do buy CDs and physical movies. The price of a new 4K UHD sometimes is like 30-40 USD. Only giving me maybe 2 hours of entertainment and perhaps I’ll never visit that movie for a while. Contrast that to the average video game.
Anyways, My point was really for the family man whom has other more important expenses. As overall in the world gaming is still a luxury.
@MrPeanutbutterz I’ve done coding before and am not taking away from any software developer. I’m just saying that not every game is created equal nor provides the same amount of hours for new content.
@RagnarLothbrok gaming has always been an expensive hobby. I remember growing up my dad didn’t buy my siblings every title we wanted. Just a selection of games he wanted and some for us. It wasn’t only till I started working in my teens in which I got to buy more games whether new or used. So people need to realize that gaming as a hobby does have a cost. Just like anything else that is vanity at the end of the day. I think switch 2 will be successful initially with hardcore fans. You know the folks whom will buy a new console at launch regardless of what is presented. Now after that we shall see if people can be convinced to get a switch 2. Nintendo has an uphill battle to climb.
Video games have slowly risen in cost the past few decades. Contrast this to the increased entertainment value that they provide. Gaming studios have increased expenses like normal people like you and I. In the grand scheme these are still modest increases for the value that consumers get. We have always had to choose how carefully we spend our spare money on hobbies so folks will just have to choose more wisely.
Lastly I don’t believe that video games need to all follow a similar price structure. I always found it funny that a simple 1v1 fighting game costs as much as a game like Skyrim new. I say let studios set their own MSRP for individual software.
@get2sammyb it will be a hard sell to those whom already own a switch for sure. New console launches generally are for the enthusiasts of said whom must have the new hardware. As for the ports, it’s no different than the PS5 launch and counting. Nintendo’s challenge will be how quickly to bring new exclusive content and experiences to the switch 2.
Price is fine and what I expected. The cost of new consoles really hasn’t skyrocketed in the past few decades despite inflation increasing costs across all industries. Plus components for SOCs are made almost exclusively in two countries. So it costs money to keep or open a new line. Despite the increased costs, it will sell well. As there are many Nintendo fans. Gaming is a hobby at the end of the day let’s not forget. With each new generation more value is provided to consumers. So it’s fair IMHO to ask for more coin. Consumers will dictate what pricing people will accept. I’m curious now what MS has in store for its handheld.
@Wilshiire I’m a huge Killzone fan. Well 1-3 that is. I think someone else should do something with the IP. As the blokes and ethos of old studio is mostly gone. And the present studio would make a soft, overly clean Killzone story, and less masculine entry. I’m willing to pay full price for a physical remastered PS5 set. Some people want bloodborne. I want KZ.
Sony will likely make a deal to get these games blocked. But it will be a difficult argument. As if the Xbox is just a branded PC, then they will have a hard time in court if it came down to it. As if a dude purchased a legal digital access right on steam then they should be able to play it on any medium that supports steam. Sony will have made their money from that guy. If the next xbox is as powerful as MS says then this could be very interesting next generation! Hopefully Sony isn’t making a weak sauce SOC for the PS6.

Re: PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Are Not the Future of Gaming, Says US Analyst
@PlatinumMikey I hope that MS will come up with something that latches on or resonates with many people. As competition is good. I hope that their handheld and next Xbox plans work out very well.
Re: PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Are Not the Future of Gaming, Says US Analyst
Re: PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass Are Not the Future of Gaming, Says US Analyst
Re: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Already Surpassed 500,000 Sales Despite Oblivion Launch
See when a company has success, they are happy to post copies sold as that is a real metric that is used to gauge success. Good for them.
Re: PS5 Price Increases Announced by Sony, Immediately Affects UK, Europe, and More
No surprise here.
Re: Microsoft Short Changes Indiana Jones PS5 by Only Putting 20GB on the Blu-ray
Re: Microsoft Short Changes Indiana Jones PS5 by Only Putting 20GB on the Blu-ray
Re: Microsoft Short Changes Indiana Jones PS5 by Only Putting 20GB on the Blu-ray
Re: Rumour: Gears of War Could Finally Be Revealed for PS5 at the Xbox Showcase
@The_Decline_99 the characters for 4 and 5 are weak sauce. The blokes in the originals trilogy are good IMO. The story felt more real. The gears trilogy is similar to the mass effect trilogy. Then there was mass effect andromeda. Clearly a different ethos.
Re: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Download Size Is Still Massive on PS5
Sizes won’t be smaller the further games and assets grow with more polygons. It’s a delicate balance to get the consoles to do what they do for a very reasonable price. People just need to learn patience and install what they desire to presently play. Not a big deal. If it is just to buy more storage options which are available. Besides this game appears to be quality based off of the Xbox release.
Re: Nintendo Is Displaying Hubris Which Would Make Even PS3 Era Sony Blush
Re: Almost All PS5 Fans Are Against $80 Games
@Ogbert best comment. I have been telling people this. At the end of the day gaming is a luxury hobby. Gaming studios have expenses too. People get sad when studios get shut down or gaming industry employees get axed. Well folks people need to buy the products to pay for wages, benefits, company expenses, and new products. Gaming is still a cheap form of entertainment at the end of the day.
Re: Nintendo Is Raising the Price of Games with Switch 2
Re: Nintendo Is Raising the Price of Games with Switch 2
@MrPeanutbutterz I’ve done coding before and am not taking away from any software developer. I’m just saying that not every game is created equal nor provides the same amount of hours for new content.
Re: Nintendo Is Raising the Price of Games with Switch 2
Re: Nintendo Is Raising the Price of Games with Switch 2
Video games have slowly risen in cost the past few decades. Contrast this to the increased entertainment value that they provide. Gaming studios have increased expenses like normal people like you and I. In the grand scheme these are still modest increases for the value that consumers get. We have always had to choose how carefully we spend our spare money on hobbies so folks will just have to choose more wisely.
Lastly I don’t believe that video games need to all follow a similar price structure. I always found it funny that a simple 1v1 fighting game costs as much as a game like Skyrim new. I say let studios set their own MSRP for individual software.
Re: Poll: PS5 Fans, Are You Sold on the Nintendo Switch 2?
@get2sammyb it will be a hard sell to those whom already own a switch for sure. New console launches generally are for the enthusiasts of said whom must have the new hardware. As for the ports, it’s no different than the PS5 launch and counting. Nintendo’s challenge will be how quickly to bring new exclusive content and experiences to the switch 2.
Re: Poll: PS5 Fans, Are You Sold on the Nintendo Switch 2?
Re: Remaster Specialists Are Ready to Target the PS3 Next, And We Can't Wait
@Wilshiire I’m a huge Killzone fan. Well 1-3 that is. I think someone else should do something with the IP. As the blokes and ethos of old studio is mostly gone. And the present studio would make a soft, overly clean Killzone story, and less masculine entry. I’m willing to pay full price for a physical remastered PS5 set. Some people want bloodborne. I want KZ.
Re: Fans Unsure Whether Sony Will Block PS5 Games on Xbox's Rumoured PC Hardware
