@nomither6 why would they share their IP with Microsoft? MS has only done so because they are all in on subsidized gamepass and while MS is rich due to windows, their executives want to see more money from the Xbox brand. So they sell their games to other platforms even if before the acquisitions their studios would have done that already. Sony and Nintendo need to keep a tight grip on their IPs. MS has done what they have done due to Xbox not selling well since Xbox one compared to the x360 which was on par with PS3. It would be a different story if MS was on top and Sony couldn’t move hardware. So MS has changed their approach drastically.
@Boxmonkey yes which is why I have not been a fan of the subscription services for gaming. As I could see the writing on the wall for the future. Sure these services are good for an already existing backlog of old games. Just look at Netflix at first and its success. Then once other IP owners removed their content or made it more costly, Netflix had to go into debt to make more shows to justify people keeping their cheap subscription. It’s harder for game companies to put out many games especially since there is what I call a marvel effect in which every suit type wants to only create big budget games with hopes of striking gold.
Yes the steam numbers are very misleading. Especially for games which have a bigger base on consoles historically speaking.
Subscription models make it very hard for gaming companies to make new content. Especially those outside of the Windows corporate umbrella.
In my opinion it’s basically fraud if a single player game that is launched physically requires an internet connection. One should be able to play their game without an internet connection day 1 for whatever version of the game was written to the disc. As one will always be able to play that in the future whenever one decides to hook up said console.
Sounds like they want to control the narrative about this game so they can at least make as much money as possible. Since they know how polarizing it has been due to the choices they consciously made with this title. They really want to reverse their precipitous fall as of late. So much is riding on this title.
With that said I wasn’t even tracking that people waste their time doing digital threats to developers in the video game industry. Very silly. At the end of the day it’s just entertainment and people should vote with their wallet as the strongest form of protest against any company.
@KillerBoy yea exactly mate. From what I’ve seen from the sidelines, modern developers in this realm just don’t like the critique of their artwork if fans don’t agree with it. It’s all funny to me because I remember as a young lad growing up with the mindset that words can never hurt me but sticks and stones can. Cyber bullying is so silly to endure because all one needs to do is block or unfollow. It’s that simple. People’s negatively online shouldn’t impact an individual. With that said I don’t know the laws across each western country but serious threats in person or online can be prosecuted.
@johncalmc people expect everything to be free and cheap. All while the gaming industry suffers from inflation like everything else. Then people get sad when studios close. Video games are such a cheap form of entertainment compared to the hours of value they provide.
No it’s not high at all. It’s a “new” game for the PS base. Besides Forza horizons are full games. If the price is too high then one can always get subsidized gamepass to play Microsoft games. The price is competitive with every other digital release on PS.
@naruball most gamers don’t care what outlets like frames per second foundry has to say about performance. The casual gamer just wants entertainment to their liking.
@OldGamer999 no we don’t have to get over it. There will always be people like me that pay a premium for physical media. I buy 4K UHDs, CD, and albums still. I’ll pay a premium for whatever physical game release going forward. As I’m not going to be beholden to servers for my single player console games.
@Rich33 I expect cross generation is here to stay. I don’t have any delusions about this. Especially since they went to the cheaper SOC designs. As we have seen this generation IMHO they let it go too far into the generation. We are nearly at the halfway point of the console generation. Obviously the cough era and the suits wanting live service messed things up.
My problem with cross generation stems from the fact that developers will be limiting their visions for games. Sure at a consoles launch that cross generation is fine but I’d like to see first party be the justification for one getting the new hardware.
Yes the PS6 will be more expensive on the surface. The reality is that gaming hasn’t kept up with inflation and the gaming industry like all other industries has bills to pay. I’ll get roasted for this but personally I’d like to see a very expensive PS6 to build that is a powerhouse at launch that has a very strong CPU.
@ChrisDeku not a ridiculous comment from the standpoint if one was on the fence about buying a PS5. Up until very recently in this generation, I could not sell anyone on personally on getting at PS5 despite me owning one if they have a PS4.
@MrPeanutbutterz yes Sony had plenty of PS4 ports to ps5 I’m not denying that. And yes it’s a fact that Microsoft acquired so many studios to get to where they are. But at this point we just have to accept that. I’m tracking Sonys push for live service games which they wanted to be the future during the cough era when the decisions were made.
MS closing those studios was MS just doing their usual corporate thing. No reason for them to shutter a game studio that made profit.
And it’s true Sony is a hardware company at its core. From TVs, walkmans, stereo equipment, and speakers. The PlayStation is hardware. And Sony won’t be liberal with its IPs like MS since they need people to buy into their system. Consoles do sell at a launch at first. But the PS4 and PS5 lowered the usual margin. As the SOCs were cheaper as well as the overall design.
I don’t understand the worry surrounding the pro. Many products have tiers. I.e BMW and their 3 series. Most people won’t be getting the top M3 but there are enough people willing to pay for what it has. I also see the pro as a R/D product for Sony on the market for the next PS6. The next PS6 will likely be more expensive because of inflation. And gaming hasn’t really kept up with inflation either plus nearly all chips are made in one of two places. So competition for line time is tough.
@Darude84 interesting that you say the PS5 is your favorite generation. For me the best generation was the Xbox 360 /ps3 era. As we had so much variety from big to small titles. Virtually every taste was filled IMO.
@Boxmonkey the 6 year old SOC of the PS5 is being used heavily already. The learning curve isn’t as high as older more bespoke consoles like the PS3/PS2 which had a higher learning curve to get near its theoretical processing capabilities. Optimization is key and the newer games that are only current gen do look good. But expecting a lot of unused overhead on this SOC to appear is unlikely.
@RiverGenie GT7 was built for the PS4. I’d be surprised if we got a bespoke GT built for the PS5. I suspect the next one will be cross generation again but with the PS6.
@ChrisDeku I guess I should have stated specifically current generation games only. As I don’t count cross generation PS4 games that received a little more polygons and run better on the PS5 because it’s newer hardware. And if people are being honest, people know what one means when they say the releases have been lacking. Just like I said above. I see many PS4 games on that top list since the start of the PS5 generation. Isn’t Demon souls a PS3 remaster?
PS4 had a much stronger start with new games that weren’t cross generation. PS4 had more to be excited about at launch. Despite PS3 ending so strong.
But technically you are correct Sony did release “new” MSRP priced games digitally and physically speaking with a PS5 logo. And lastly the scores of the games don’t really matter. I.e. how high Astro bot scored yet that has no bearing on mass adoption of the game. As from what I read here people were surprised it didn’t sell more.
Of course it’s a win for PS gamers. As Sony’s output has been rubbish this generation. And it’s MS which has developed more first party games this generation and shown somewhat of a pipeline. And subsidized gamepass costs money to run and will get more expensive each passing year for them. But it’s not a problem as all MS has to do is increase the cost of all versions of windows by 0.01$. Since MS has shown they want to be a publisher, I think that opens the door for them to acquire more studios. The more studios MS owns then the more they will want subsidized gamepass on other platforms as they will own more IPs. But as it stands now they make way more money with the big PS and Steam base buying their games outright.
IMHO outright purchasing is better for the industry and studios in the long term. As consumers will reward games and studios that they desire. Subsidized gamepass protects studios games.
And people expecting Sony to do the same are mistaken. As Sony is a hardware company at its core. They need people to buy their hardware and software is how it is done.
Lastly, this is all happening because MS was operating from a position of weakness in the traditional console competition. So they innovated and are becoming a more indirect competitor. So team Xbox has become a hybrid courtesy of their rich parent company.
@nessisonett yup the unreal engine is the Toyota Camry of game engines. Sure it works for many applications. But a bespoke game engine made for a specific game will always be better. Just as a purpose built sports car platform will be better than a common platform for a mass produced car that starts out normal vehicle.
Too drastic of a change for me. I’ll stick to 5 & 6. I only want to play as one nation state representing [insert group here]. I don’t want to be forced to be a different civilization or leader because it’s a new age in the game. And from what I’ve seen the transitions don’t even make sense history wise. So I’ll pass for now. I’ll see what it’s like in a few years after multiple DLCs!
Outside of the anglosphere, MS doesn’t really try to advertise their series consoles in a serious way. There are more gamers than just the people in the USA and UK. They have themselves to blame for conceding so many markets since the X360 era.
@Darth_Stofi Sony isn’t a charity. They are for profit, so I don’t see how they are being anti-consumer. Same for every corporation that isn’t a non profit organization. With that said competition is good for any industry. I want a strong Xbox brand. As the PS3/X360/wii era saw the console markers are trying very hard. MS was doing very well and was so innovative then.
@LogicStrikesAgain I understand. We’ll see how the next few years go and if they actually do make hardware still. As if they do, there has to be a compelling reason as to why one would want “Xbox” or MS hardware.
Not sure why they felt a need to say this. As their strategy changes quite often. At first it was just four games to PS5. Then here we are. So just because a game at a showcase isn’t announced for PS, doesn’t mean they won’t change their mind quickly. So people will continue to speculate with each game from Xbox studios hence forth. And since they are doing another Xbox console, it will only get worse.
@Oram77 Third party developers have almost always been multi platform. Exclusives will continue for Nintendo and Sony. As they need people to buy their hardware since both companies are hardware companies at their core. Microsoft is heavily a software company and can afford to push its software everywhere. And they are doing so now since they aren’t exactly winning in the console hardware market. In which many have adopted their narrative. Now if MS was a dell or HP then Xbox would truly be in a dire situation. People buy into certain brands for what they uniquely offer.
@LifeGirl console exclusives aren’t done. The PC base isn’t the console base and doesn’t cannibalize console sells. People will still want a PS or Xbox if console exclusives can attract them to a certain platform. And most families will still buy consoles as PC will still remain niche.
Well Ubisoft has to be very very optimistic about this game. They truly need it to succeed for their financials as a corporation. So of course they will report a positive “pre-sales” for their investors. Too much riding on this game. Not sure about folks about here but I don’t need the validation or affirmation of others for me to buy any game. With that said I have my doubts this game will reach critical mass for many reasons. Like any established IP, the company can rely on those that will buy because they see a new game with [insert IP here].
Very impressive to me considering the Sony lineup has been weak sauce this generation and a PS4 is still solid. Not enough titles outside of a handful in which I could convince someone to upgrade to a PS5 and be honest. This is what previous prestige and brand reputation does. As MS despite their mismanagement of the Xbox brand has put out more new stuff this generation. Whereas Sony is content with remasters and the prestige of the PS4. As many people when they think of console gaming will say PlayStation. My young nephews and their friends all want a PlayStation. Even if just to play a free to play game mostly. And MS is still struggling due to the Xbox one launch and an inconsistent strategy. I say this as someone whom owns a PS5 and XSX. Both of which are mostly used for excellent last generation games.
@get2sammyb gaming is a vanity hobby so there isn’t really a price that they have to get it down to. There is more going on behind the scenes. As everyone is aware the Covid demand for electronics surged. And almost all semiconductors are made in either China or Taiwan. Nintendo, Sony, and MS have to compete for line time with all other industries. It’s not that the PS5 and series consoles are complicated and expensive as there are nearly 6 plus year old designs. With that said each company will likely keep prices the same as they need R/D money too for next generation and need production lines still. The cost for everything is going up. And I don’t want a weak sauce PS or Xbox at launch. I want a beast of a SOC at launch with plenty of head room.
“AI” is nothing more than specialized software or code that is programmed by man. It can be written to index large bytes of data from any database giving the illusion to the user it’s “smart.” The AI that people have been sold by movies is that of a quantum computing machine with organic elements. Anyways AI is nothing more than a tool or program that can be used to assist with workflow. The gaming industry will benefit from it as the AI tools can do redundant tasks which can be reviewed latter by the humans. So that the humans can focus on making the artwork and story mechanics.
@Drago201 I’m tracking that Henry isn’t a normal straight Christian man anymore. Which is what has caused people to be mad. As in KCD1 he wasn’t that way. For every new game that comes out that’s just the questions that we will always see going forward “Is game [x] woke.” And what constitutes that term depends on the individual.
@Czar_Khastik as long as they don’t delist the game. Then even so one is beholden to censorship with forced updates which will come in the future. Same for digital books. Newer versions for any said book are edited quite often. Hardcopies prevent this.
In real life, females need to take supplements among other things to be “jacked” like a man could be naturally. Those supplements just aren’t worth it to take for an actress just for this role as the actress would have had to start a serious exercise regiment.
@thefourfoldroot1 admittedly I’m very biased towards heavy rain. As at the time for me I hadn’t experienced any game like that. I remember showing friends and they were so impressed with it too. As many of my friends were on the X360 action team only. So for me heavy rain was better. However I enjoyed all of the three exclusive games that Quantic dream did for Sony. The intro song for this game was very hype though! I remember getting the special edition and the digital tracks downloaded to my PS3. Such a great generation.
It’s a design choice. Rockstar always is ambitious for whatever console hardware is the current generation. People still will love their games at launch. The only people that truly care for resolution/FPS are the FPS foundry crowd. Most people are content with good gameplay and don’t even know about all these technical details.
@BAMozzy yes this is the obvious truth. Microsoft likes to really brag about this. MS would make even more money without subsidized gamepass. With their ambitions to be a big publisher they need for most people to pay outright. The reality is subsidized gamepass was created as it is now to make up for their position in the market since Xbox one.
No surprise considering who they own. It’d be actually impressive to me if Xbox wasn’t an IP of Microsoft with its deep pockets. Which allows for these purchases and things like subsidized gamepass. As a third party publisher Xbox studios is big. Might as well try to get Ubisoft once they have another disappointing fiscal year. I’m typed this from my mobile iPhone Xbox haha.
@JackiePriest this is what they want for the internet of everything world. More subscriptions. And they can control the narrative with price and what gets listed/delisted.
Many retailers have purposely throttled physical media. In the USA Best Buy for example decided to stop carrying physical media in their stores to make room for other products. Even online they stopped selling physical media. So I don’t give them business anymore. If I cannot buy physical media for a console then I won’t buy said console.
This is the goal for internet of everything where everyone is on a subscription. Beholden to the corporations.
Very disappointing they are going this route. It would be different if they said almost all Bethesda games will continue to be multi-platform just like they were before. The reality is that they are doing this because of their very weak position. Subsidized gamepass was created to remedy their position too but it didn’t help much. In fact much of their base complains about it being too expensive haha. Which is funny considering it’s the best deal in gaming. Microsoft really messed themselves up here and has tied their hands down and legs. As they must keep propping up subsidized gamepass otherwise people would really leave the brand if they went back to a normal more healthy model. Luckily they own COD otherwise it would be way more expensive to get it on S-GP. All in all I wish that Xbox can be turned around. I wish the ethos of the X360 era was still there. As they were really about gaming.
@get2sammyb PC is not a threat to the consoles. Most families won’t buy a PC just to game either. For people like me the console experience is much more fun for most types of games. Sitting in front of a big screen with surround sound is great.

Re: Consoles Are Alive and Well As PS5 Hits Over 75 Million Units Shipped Worldwide
Re: Consoles Are Alive and Well As PS5 Hits Over 75 Million Units Shipped Worldwide
Re: Sony XDEV Is Eager For You to Watch Today's PS5 Livestream
@Cry_Zero yes please!!!!
Re: Take-Two Boss Says 'Artificial Intelligence Is an Oxymoron'
“AI” is nothing more than specialized software or code that is programmed by man. It can be written to index large bytes of data from any database giving the illusion to the user it’s “smart.” The AI that people have been sold by movies is that of a quantum computing machine with organic elements. Anyways AI is nothing more than a tool or program that can be used to assist with workflow. The gaming industry will benefit from it as the AI tools can do redundant tasks which can be reviewed latter by the humans. So that the humans can focus on making the artwork and story mechanics.
Re: Some Fans Think This Smile Is Proof Avowed Is Coming to PS5
@Nepp67 glad I wasn’t the only one that felt that way about the art style. It turned me off immediately.
Re: Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's Player Count Dwarfs Every Medieval Battle in History
Re: Ex-PlayStation Boss Says Sony 'Can't Get Away' with a PS6 That Has No Disc Drive
@Czar_Khastik as long as they don’t delist the game. Then even so one is beholden to censorship with forced updates which will come in the future. Same for digital books. Newer versions for any said book are edited quite often. Hardcopies prevent this.
Re: Abby's Muscles Less Relevant to HBO's The Last of Us Adaption
In real life, females need to take supplements among other things to be “jacked” like a man could be naturally. Those supplements just aren’t worth it to take for an actress just for this role as the actress would have had to start a serious exercise regiment.
Re: PS3's Most Bizarre Game Will Have Its Own TV Show
@thefourfoldroot1 admittedly I’m very biased towards heavy rain.
Re: Former Rockstar Animator Doubtful GTA 6 Will Run at 60fps on PS5
It’s a design choice. Rockstar always is ambitious for whatever console hardware is the current generation. People still will love their games at launch. The only people that truly care for resolution/FPS are the FPS foundry crowd. Most people are content with good gameplay and don’t even know about all these technical details.
Re: Xbox Was December's Biggest Publisher, and 64% of Its Sales Were on PS5, PS4
Re: Xbox Was December's Biggest Publisher, and 64% of Its Sales Were on PS5, PS4
Re: Fans Are Buying Fewer Boxed Video Games Than Ever in the US
@JackiePriest this is what they want for the internet of everything world. More subscriptions. And they can control the narrative with price and what gets listed/delisted.
Re: Fans Are Buying Fewer Boxed Video Games Than Ever in the US
Many retailers have purposely throttled physical media.
Re: Fans Are Buying Fewer Boxed Video Games Than Ever in the US
@Clytorial_Impact I only buy games physically. And I’ll only accept this for consoles. I’m also someone that pays for new blu-ray movies.
Re: Is Starfield Coming to PS5? 'Keeping Games Off Other Platforms Is Not the Path for Us,' Says Xbox Boss
Re: Is Starfield Coming to PS5? 'Keeping Games Off Other Platforms Is Not the Path for Us,' Says Xbox Boss
@get2sammyb PC is not a threat to the consoles. Most families won’t buy a PC just to game either. For people like me the console experience is much more fun for most types of games. Sitting in front of a big screen with surround sound is great.
Re: Stop Guessing GTA 6 Trailer 2 Release Date, Demands Red Dead Redemption 2 Voice Actor
@Brundleflies21 dated is relative. People will complain if all companies do a mission structure the same. I see no problem with what rockstar does.
