I actually think 10 hours of main story and 10 hours of side content is the perfect game length.
It keeps people from getting burned out on the same gameplay and world. Most games these days are total slogs to get through.
Forbidden West was like that for me. The first 25 hours are so was fine. Then I had to force myself to finish the main story and started ignoring side content. Just so I could finish it.
They could have cut about 20 hours of content out of that game and it would have been better off for it.
The entire middle section of the game was so bloated. The first part felt perfect. Then it meandered way too long in the middle. Then they completely rushed the ending.
I like Ragnarok, but ultimately I feel like it was probably one of the weakest titles in the entire franchise in my opinion.
The consoles are easier to program and develop for, but the expectations of modern art, sound and music, presentation, and fidelity have increased dramatically since 2006.
A significant portion of dev time isn’t even spent on programming. That’s arguably one of the faster parts of the development process these days assuming your studio has competent programmers. Artwork, sound design, lighting maps, material work for assets, etc. are what really increases dev time these days because the expectations are so much higher.
The only way to decrease dev time these days is to reuse as much as you can from a previous project. Miles Morales took less than a year to develop because Insomniac reused a ton of touched up assets from Spider-Man. Which was fine in my opinion but some people got mad about it. I’m willing to bet Spiderman 2 has a good amount of reused assets from the previous Spiderman games and Ratchet Rift Apart in certain parts of the world to speed up development time. And people are going to complain about it.
That’s one reason proper Ray tracing (path tracing) is so critical for future generations of games. It’ll cut down on artwork materials significantly in the future once developers really learn how to leverage it. You’re offloading art design to the GPU and CPU, since the path tracing will handle lighting change needs on the materials.
No. The middle point of the 8th Gen was where development time scales really started to skyrocket.
In the 7th Gen (PS3 and 360) average development time increased to about 3 years on average across the entire generation for ambitious games (there were exceptions to that rule; for example New Vegas was done in about a year and a half but they leveraged a ton of assets from Fallout 3 to pull that off). Some less ambitious titles were finished in two.
By the time the PS4/Xbone rolled around, development time had increased to 2-3 years for formulaic sequels and four years for ambitious new IP games by the middle of the generation. By the end, really big AAA games had increased to four for just formulaic sequels.
That’s why gaming has felt so samey for a long time now. We are waiting longer than ever for relatively formulaic AAA games.
Plus I feel like you need a real understanding of the WWI Western Front to really appreciate what Tolkien was trying to describe with the series’ locations since he heavily based it on his experiences.
He served on the Western Front. And his depictions of Mordor in the novels sounds almost exactly what the Somme looked like after a few months of fighting between Britain and Germany.
It’s pretty good. I’m doing a Firewall focused build. You get the bonus skill that increases your mana regen for each firewall you cast up to five times.
So every engagement I place down a hydra for some early damage and then start putting firewalls down on both myself and at the big enemies. After that I switch to fire bolt to build Mana real fast. Then start throwing down more firewalls.
Also I abuse fire shield every time I get the chance. It’s a hugely OP skill. Deals huge touch damage and makes you invulnerable. Cooldown time sucks though but that’s what all the Firewalls are for.
I’m gonna modify the build in the late game once I can get legendary equipment.
I can’t wait for the seasonal content to get here so I can start building seasonal hardcore characters to experiment with the other classes. That was my favorite part of Diablo III.
I didn’t play it till a day after release but it’s shockingly stable so far. I kind of expected constant disconnects for the first week or two as the servers got demolished by the huge numbers of players but they’ve been good so far.
Even the Queue isn’t crazy. The longest I had to wait was like five seconds.
I really like the interconnected world design for the players. It’s great fun just walking up on a random event and there are four guys fighting their hearts out against some hard enemies and joining in with them to be the assist.
I think Starfield looks great. Disappointed there won’t be a performance mode for the console versions (it’s locked to 30fps) but the game seems genuinely ambitious.
But that was really it. Nothing else there was interesting to me besides a few multiplatform games. So I give Sony and Microsoft’s presentations a D and a C respectively from an exclusive standpoint. Microsoft at least had Starfield and that’s a genuinely good looking and innovative game. It’s a lot more than Fallout in Space which was what I was thinking it was going to be when it was announced years ago.
But it’s not enough to make me invest in an Xbox. If I wasn’t having a son in November I probably would invest in a Series S just to play it. But I suspect my time will be far more limited than it is now once he comes along so there’s no point in investing money in something I won’t have time to use.
Plus the sales aren’t nearly as good most of the time. That’s my main problem with digital even though a decent bit of my library is digital (certain games I don’t see the point of a physical copy, like Diablo IV for example).
Get ready guys. PS6 and Xbox Series Z will be digital only. I think Switch 2 will be physical but Switch 3 will be digital only.
A damn shame, but this is what is going to happen.
Of course people will say “but PC is all digital now so what’s the big deal” but the deal is that the PC is an open platform. There is competition between digital storefronts like Epic, Steam, GOG, etc. So prices tend to be much more flexible on the PC.
These consoles are locked to one digital store each. There will be no competition beyond developers competing with each other when the games are similar. But the days of big digital sales that we do get to enjoy (granted they aren’t as good as they were just two years ago; why is TLOUP1 still 55 dollars on sale??) will go bye bye.
Now if they allowed extra digital stores on each platform (for example, Steam on console) then it wouldn’t be nearly as dire. But that will never ever happen unless some laws get passed.
Ya know I liked the Activity Cards at first back in 2020. I thought it would be an interesting feature for open world games after completing the main story.
But so few games, even Sony’s own games, actually make good use of them that I would like for Sony to just kill them off. I tend to just ignore them now.
Best part is the casting. Kurtwood Smith looks like a guy you would see working behind the office counter at an Electricity supplier company. Clarence is just a total Psychopath. So the dichotomy of Kurtwood’s appearance (a middle aged officer clerk) combined with his psychotic portrayal of Boddicker is just peak villain to me.
It’s a HoloLens competitor. It’s aimed at business, developers, and wealthy individuals.

This isn’t meant for the mainstream audience. It’s meant for developers and early enthusiasts who have more money than sense.
Apple will most likely democratize (aka release something at a reasonable price) the Vision later on the down the road. But for the first few years the new Vision platform will be expensive as hell.
I would rather see developers create unique black characters and tell unique black stories over just trying to throw people of color into a diversity algorithm.
Like I would love to see a developer create a US Civil War game based on the experiences of a US Colored Unit fighting Confederates in North Carolina and Virginia. Or perhaps another stab at a Spawn video game since he is among the best written black characters in comic books with a huge lore surrounding him.
I’m sorry to hear that you lost your job. That sucks.
Hopefully you’ll land another one quickly.
I’m loving Tears of the Kingdom but I understand it’s a game that isn’t for everyone. My buddy doesn’t like TOTK or BOTW and after listening to his opinion I finally understood why the new Zelda formula doesn’t click with everyone. It’s Freeform adventure to the point of aimlessness. And that can be very boring for a lot of people.
For me I just love seeing a modern game with a great physics system to play with. Most modern games have physics simulation similar to 6th generation console games. Aka barely any at all. The 7th Gen (360 and PS3) are still the kings of neat physics based gameplay and new Zelda reminds me of that.
Considering the horrid state of the AAA industry over the past few years (broken, buggy games galore) I suspect people are not pre-ordering as much as they used to.
Millions of people got burned on Cyberpunk. And I’m thinking people are just genuinely trying to be more cautious now. Especially since this generation saw a price hike and if anyone has noticed game prices on the biggest AAA games aren’t falling as fast as they used to, at least here in the states.
Then you got the launch period of June which is just stacked. I’m still trying to decide whether to get SF6, FFXVI, or Diablo. I’m only allowing myself one game at full price since I’m still playing Zelda. I suspect a bunch of people are in my boat. Being financially conservative with all of the inflation going on right now.
I absolutely adore that movie. I prefer it to the Godfather and Goodfellas.
Being a huge fan of war movies and other such subject matter violence and language never bothered me very much. I mean I cuss like a sailor so I’d be pretty hypocritical if I complained about cussing in media.
I am trying to restrain myself more so now since I have a son on the way. And I’d rather he not develop my sailor’s tongue if at all possible.
I am only half black (mother white, father black) and I was mostly raised by my white family so I will admit that my personal views on certain issues are heavily influenced by that upbringing. I didn’t really get to live the black American experience like my cousins or my father did. Not to the same extent anyway.
I would like to see more games developed around black history. I thought the opening mission of Battlefield 1 was an excellent representation of black American history that often isn’t talked about. The 369th infantry regiment was the most highly decorated American unit of World War I and it was nice to see DICE choose to focus on a relatively little known piece of black history, since the 369th was an all black infantry regiment that experienced a ton of racism during their training in the United States.
As a person of color, I got to admit, I don’t get the controversy around this stuff.
The game’s world and lore is obviously inspired by Central Europe, specifically medieval Germany.
There weren’t too many black people in medieval Germany.
It’s a work of fiction yes, but the setting is heavily inspired by a certain place and time period.
That was my problem with Rings of Power. Considering what Tolkien had based his fictional world on, it just didn’t make a lot sense to have a multiracial society.
Had they used their black actors to represent a specific group of people from a part of that world, that would have made more sense. Since medieval Europeans did interact with black Africans during the inspired time period through trade.
But medieval society was anything but a multiracial integrated place. Which is what Rings of Power did.
By comparison, Barrett and the other black characters in the world of Final Fantasy VII makes total sense. The game’s setting was inspired by the modern world with a few twists. So a multiracial integrated society was the correct way to depict it.
Plus contrary to most people’s takes, I actually think Barrett was a pretty well written black American character even back in the original FFVII by Japanese standards anyway considering most of their media relies only on negative stereotypes for their depictions of black people, specifically black Americans. Barrett was a nice change of pace since he’s always been depicted as highly competent, a good natural leader that people are willing to follow without hesitation, fiercely loyal, and brave. If a bit rough around the edges. He cusses a lot but to be honest that’s pretty accurate for our community. It’s not a negative stereotype in my opinion.
But like another poster said, don’t compromise on your morals. If you feel you need to cancel your preorder then do it. Never compromise on your principles.
I don’t have one, and with a kid on the way I can’t drop 550 on something like that, but I think what’s hurting it is the lack of that “it” game.
It needs something like the original Halo for OG Xbox. Something that defines the platform and is a must have.
Half Life Alyx seems like it could have been that game. If Sony could have gotten it ported I think that would made a ton of people get super excited for it.
I’m having a hard time deciding between FF16 and Diablo 4. I’m only allowing myself to get one game for June.
In better times it would be SF6, but unfortunately my internet service started being a total wench a few weeks ago and it’s too unpredictable for online play now. So SF6 will have to wait until I either find a new provider (not many options out in rural southern US) or crap goes back to normal.

To be fair, while MGS is one of my favorite gaming series, the actual storyline is about as convoluted as Kingdom Hearts.

The Dreamcast is still getting side scrolling shooters. Which is just nuts.

Good. I love hearing Big Boss nerd out on that custom 1911 he gets during the game.

Re: Poll: Which PS5 Blockbuster Will You Be Playing in June?
I’m having a hard time deciding between FF16 and Diablo 4. I’m only allowing myself to get one game for June.
In better times it would be SF6, but unfortunately my internet service started being a total wench a few weeks ago and it’s too unpredictable for online play now. So SF6 will have to wait until I either find a new provider (not many options out in rural southern US) or crap goes back to normal.
