Re: Battlefield Fans Stand at Attention as EA Teases Community Testing Program

Mythologue

I recall Bad Company 2 being tantalising for the sole reason that there wasn't really anything else like it on console, from what I recall.

Large maps with multiple families of vehicles, and a robust engine for tearing down buildings. All of that, at the time, was novel and exciting.

But "real-life explosion from Gaza" shows that they're about as tasteless as they always have been. I don't have any faith in this return.

Re: Would You Pay $100 for GTA 6?

Mythologue

In retrospect, £100 would be a good price point for Elden Ring and maybe BG3. That's a personal thing and I wouldn't expect anyone else to agree.

Generally, however, I wouldn't pay £100 for any game. Unless it's a special edition (collector's and such) with physical components. £70 is a reach. Some of my favourite games were priced lower than the old industry standard of £50 (SOMA, Meatboy, Penumbra, Gmod, TF2, Portal, etc.) and so anything excessive would go ignored by me until it drops in a sale. I'd favour smaller indie and AA titles.

Mass Effect as part of the legendary edition. I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. It's content-rich without feeling bloated and will probably only take around 30 - 35 hours, refreshingly short for an RPG.

Diablo IV with my partner. She doesn't play games much but seems to just enjoy making her sorceress look as suggestive as possible whilst blasting flaming beams at demons. It's the second time we've beaten the main story and we're just checking off the outstanding dungeons.

Re: Game of the Year: Push Square Readers' 20 Most Anticipated PS5 Games of 2025

Mythologue

@Porco I'm not sold on the game right now, so I'd be one of those you mentioned. DS seemed like an idea that could work exceptionally well as a Netflix or Disney series, but I just don't think it worked at all as a game. I'm not expecting a radical change, either, so I think I'll be skipping it outright.

But I guess it remains to be seen. It could be lightning in a bottle, like SH2.

Re: Game of the Year: Push Square Readers' Top 10 PS5 Games of 2024

Mythologue

It's a shame that Veilguard didn't make top 10. It has some weird design choices, like certain enemies and some of the art direction, but it's a seriously impressive game in places. It's probably the most fluid that Dragon Age has ever felt, and even as an RPG-Lite, it has some fantastic character building choices and mechanics.

I can't disagree much with the list all in all, though. Astrobot especially.

Re: BioWare Will 'Finally' Return to Its Roots with Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Storytelling

I'm looking forward to it. I'm not expecting it to be anything like Origins, 2 (but who would want that anyway?) or Inquisition, but from what I've seen, it could be solid.

If it's just a step or two ahead of Andromeda, and absolutely nothing like Anthem, then I'm happy with that. Just want to see Tevinter and Minrathous. Anything like the wilds of the Storm Coast would be a huge plus.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 534

I can't get started on Shadow of the Erdtree yet, as badly as I want to.

I've been playing Demon's Souls and enjoying it a lot. I sense that I'll probably clock up at least 30 hours in that game. It's not as hard as I thought it would be but the boss runs are unforgiving, the run up to the Tower Knight in particular.

A lot like Dark Souls fundamentally, but the intricacies make it seem like an entirely different game altogether once you really get into it.

Re: Sony Is Allegedly Pulling PSVR2 Funding, Report Claims

Mythologue

I would say it was always doomed to failure (or mediocrity, which I guess is a couple of steps ahead of failure).

The way I see it, VR is expensive hardware. Costly peripherals are usually more closely associated with PC gaming. So I think that VR would have found its place within the PC community, but not so much the console community.

Nascent and innovative ideas are usually better realised within a community that not only has enough money to spend on the things, but also has a far broader suite of tools (FOSS, SDKs, IDEs, CLIs, and so on) to play around with. PSVR is good for playing games. PCVR is good for games, as well as design, simulation, modeling, and more.

If VR is going to be an unequivocal success, it needs to find its footing on PC first. I think Sony maybe jumped in a little too early, or maybe console VR is just generally a non starter.

Re: Embracer Claims Newly Adopted AI Policy Will 'Massively Enhance Game Development'

Mythologue

AI is good for STEM fields (medicine, astronomy, engineering, computer science, etc.), where those fields can employ technologies that academics, doctors, nurses, and so on, can use to enhance their work.

I don't think it's so good for artistic fields, never mind the ethical implications. When it comes to creativity, everything is better done by a human.

Here, they seem to be talking about management rather than the creative process itself. I don't know how to feel about that, personally.
