Re: ARC Raiders Unveils Promising Extraction Loop in Gameplay Reveal

DuncanMcleod

It looks so boring I could barely finish the video. I was really impressed by the first trailer of the game two years ago, where you seemed to be playing in co-op to take down giant robots. But since they decided to make it a generic extraction shooter my interest in the game totally vanished. Unfortunately for them, they learned nothing from Helldivers 2 success. People want cool co-op PvE games with interesting lore and fun gameplay loop, not this generic PvPvE looting stuff.

Re: The Wolf Among Us 2 PS5 Has Not Been Cancelled, Telltale Insists

DuncanMcleod

I agree with @RBMango , they should have released the game before The Expanse, not years after. I’m 100% sure this will be a hit. I have dozen of non-gaming friends who would buy it day one as they loved the first episode (which they played during Covid).
Strangely it’s a title that reached beyond the gaming barrier, and LCG doesn’t seem to understand how lucky they are to own the IP.

And I’m surprised to see they are encountering funding problems. Are Warner and DC Comics doing nothing about it ? The game is a derivative from a Vertigo comic series, surely DC has to know its existence. And the second game could boost sales for Fables collected editions, so it really doesn’t make sense to me that DC is not making sure is gets over the line.

James Gunn, if you ear us, do something about it.

Re: Ubisoft Disbands Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team After Poor Sales, Claims Report

DuncanMcleod

It was a great Metroidvania, with good gameplay, nice visuals and an interesting story. The Prince of Persia franchise is a bit all over the place nowadays, but this entry was creatively inspired and you could tell it was made by talented people.
I think it suffered a lot from a rocky launch, with glitches and freezes plaguing the game on 1.00. But even through this period, devs were surprisingly communicative through their Discord channel. I had a trophy problem at some point and had the pleasure of getting an answer almost immediately from their team, which is pretty rare in the industry.
Hopefully devs will find a new project to show their talent, they deserve it. Shame on you, Ubisoft.

Re: Tales of Kenzera: ZAU Dev Surgent Studios Puts Game Team on Hiatus

DuncanMcleod

The game was alright. It looked and played exactly as Prince of Persia : The Last Crown. Except it’s not as polished (obviously, since the budget is not the same), neither as captivating. But you could feel the developers were mastering their craft, it’s a shame they won’t be able to follow up on this experience.

Re: Fortnite's Rocket Racing Seems to Be Running Out of Gas on PS5, PS4

DuncanMcleod

My friends and I are big Rocket League fans and we really didn’t like what Rocket Racing was offering. At first we thought it would be a Mario Kart-like experience, but as soon as we completed the first track we knew this game mode was not for us. As stated in the article, it felt too complicated for nothing, and far from the fun you can have as a team in a Rocket League game. And as none of us are Fortnite players, we uninstalled the package immediatlely and never went back to it.

Re: Ubisoft Board Orders Internal Investigation and Review into Company's Financial Woes

DuncanMcleod

One element most of comments don’t point out is how essential Ubisoft is to France’s worldwide reputation. It’s the biggest video game company in the country, owned and led by French CEOs. And as the article stated, they employ a ton of people here. To see them in such a bad state is bad for players but even worse for the economy of France.
With the amount of fantastic IPs Ubisoft has, they should be leading the market right now. In France and elsewhere, gamers have been begging for new entries in the Rayman and Splinter Cell franchises for years. Instead of delivering great AAA solo experiences (which initially made the company famous), the Guillemot family chose to prioritize live-service games such as Riders Republic while still rushing the release of main solo franchises. They’ve been running after too many (crazy) rabbits at the same time and now they’re paying the price for it.
As for the supposed « woke » agenda, it’s kinda absurd. Women being main characters of games is not an heresy. Diversity in games is something that should be encouraged by players. I seriously pity gamers who don’t favors openness and acceptation in entertainment.

Re: Mini Review: Have a Nice Death (PS5) - Decent Roguelike Action, But Doesn't Live Up to the Genre's Best

DuncanMcleod

I’m one third into the game and there’s some crazy difficulty spikes, but the gameplay loop is actually very enjoyable. However I agree level design could be more dense. Most of the rooms are corridors without any environmental objects or traps, and thus the game relies a lot (too much ?) on its boss encounters. These are great, and the art style is simply amazing, but I wonder how repetitive it can get past the 20th hour.

Re: Could Marvel's Blade Come to PS5? Bethesda Declines to Comment

DuncanMcleod

Contrary to some of the previous comments, I’m not sure that the game si that far away from release. Arkane Lyon has always developed its games at relatively fast pace, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it release early 2025. Especially since Arkane Austin just released a vampire game as well, meaning Lyon could reuse a lot of environmental assets from Redfall, thus speeding the development process. A gameplay trailer could actually be shown as early as next summer to drive Xbox engagement during holiday 2024 using the Marvel brand.
As for its exclusive status, I can’t see Microsoft willing to release it elsewhere than on Xbox and PC. Blade is a massive franchise, and the fact that the game takes place in Paris could boost Xbox sales in Europe where it desperately needs it. As PlayStation players, we would be very surprised to see Wolverine, an Insomniac developed game, release on Xbox. PlayStation gets a strategic advantage for keeping it exclusive and the same applies to Microsoft and Blade. Surely they flooded Marvel with cash to make sure they compensated financial losses due to the game not releasing on PlayStation. Considering they paid 300 millions dollars to have Jedi : Survivor on Game Pass, a massive financial compensation seems the obvious method used here.
I’d be extremely happy with Blade releasing on PS5 but it seems so so unlikely.

Re: Don't Overpay Scalpers for Baldur's Gate 3 Physical Deluxe Edition, Says Larian

DuncanMcleod

My friends and I are not much interested in everything that comes with the Deluxe edition, except for the physical copy of the game. I don’t understand why they’re not shipping the game to classic retailers without all the bulls**t soundtrack and goodies. I just want to pay 60/70 euros for a Blu-ray and play the damn game. Guess I’ll have to hold on again I guess …

Re: Poll: Do You Think GTA 6 Will Release on PS4?

DuncanMcleod

It will certainly release on older consoles as well, but in much downgraded versions in term of loading times, textures and lighting. I can’t see Rockstar refusing money from the gigantic amount of players who still don’t own a PS5. Especially since PS4 owners will probably be willing to spend money for a PS5 upgrade later as well. And we know Rockstar is a studio with a very business-oriented mindset. What I can also see however is a massive backlash regarding GTA VI performances on older consoles at launch. We could end up with a similar situation as the Cyberpunk launch, with technical issues plaguing the game on older consoles. But Rockstar will sell tones of copies on PS4 despite every technical issues, so they really wouldn’t mind going forward with it. And for anyone who’d answer me that Rockstar games are usually pretty stable at launch, I suggest you take a look at the Definitive Editions debacle and how Rockstar handled it. The main priority for them is to make as much money as possible on a game, they really don’t care about the « current gen console only » narrative.

Re: Console Players Will Be 'Very Positively Surprised' by Alan Wake 2

DuncanMcleod

To play Remedy games day one is rarely a good idea. Didn’t play Control on day one but bought it a few months later, and it was still hampered by technical issues despite how great it was. After spending 60 bucks on Spider-Man 2, there is no way I’m paying full price for a digital only release anyway. They’ll probably come to their senses and produce a physical version early 2024.

Re: Ubisoft Vague on Assassin's Creed Mirage Sales, But It's Been a Hit on PS5

DuncanMcleod

It’s actually a pretty good game, leaves the feeling of being a soft remake of the very first Assassin’s Creed. It really plays like a different experience from Valhalla, a way more stealthy one. My guess is Ubisoft will now switch approach regarding core gameplay depending on the historical period targeted (RPG for Project Red, Adventure/horror for Project Hexe, stealth for the next one …). All while selecting and integrating specific gameplay iterations from the previous games. It would allow them to keep the licence fresh for another 10 years while trying new things creatively.

Re: Alan Wake 2 Was Delayed on PS5 to Avoid Going Neck to Neck with Spider-Man 2

DuncanMcleod

Every single one of my friends who have a PS5, including those who played the first Alan Wake, will be playing Spider-Man when Alan Wake 2 comes out. SM2 is probably not going to be a 100hours game, but it will keep people occupied for a least 2 to 4 weeks. Releasing a digital only game during this time, and hoping for it to be a success is madness. I personally won’t buy Alan Wake 2 digitally until it’s on a very good sale, or unless they reverse the decision not to release a physical copy of it. And when you think about it, Xbox players won’t be jumping on AW2 either since they’ll probably be deep into Starfield, and not done with it at all.

Re: Rumour: Immortals Fenyx Rising Sequel Canned by Ubisoft

DuncanMcleod

I got this one on a sale and was pleasantly surprised by it ! My girlfriend and I loved it so much we could have bought a sequel on day one. It was probably the best new licence Ubisoft had released in a while, and they’ll surely regret canceling the series. In the end it really seems like they don’t know how to invest money on their own IPs anymore. Like many comments I’ve seen here, it just doesn’t make sense to spend years pouring money into stillborn projects like Skull & Bones and meanwhile cut budget and ambitions on franchises that had good reviews. If the first title of an IP doesn’t perform very well sales-wise, but receive good ratings, you have to trust consumers to support such a licence long term. Otherwise you’re constantly creating new IPs and killing them instantly, thus hurting the brand’s image. And we all agree that Ubisoft needs a new breath, away from Far Cry and AC. Everyone in the industry agrees about it, so it’s maddening that Ubisoft leadership themselves is unable to capture consumers feelings toward their own strategy. Their only hope now is that Star Wars Outlaws performs so well it keeps the company afloat for a few more years, because I bet Prince of Persia, despite all its qualities, is gonna have rough sales at launch.

Re: Sony: We're Not Just Creating 10 Live Service Destiny or Fortnite Games

DuncanMcleod

I’ve never been interested in live service games and never will be. Even though there’s a decent number of cool experiences in this genre, most of them are scams, quite simply. I miss the time where Playstation Studios was putting all its efforts in making great single player games. When you look at the most successful PS brands of the last few years, all of them got popular because they were fantastic solo cinematic experiences. All my non-gamers friends played Ghost of Tsushima, loved it, but none of them was interested in playing Legends or any mp version of it. Knowing so many good studios are exclusively dedicated to making live service games makes me so sad. How many of these studios could have produced long lasting solo games, instead of chasing cash ?

Re: Microsoft Dealt Major Blow as UK Blocks Activision Buyout

DuncanMcleod

I can’t see the EU validating the deal now that the UK has given a negative opinion on it. And if both the UK and the EU block the deal, surely it won’t go through in the US either. The Microsoft appeal will probably take some time to be reviewed by authorities, so it’s gonna drag on and on for at least 4 or 6 more months now. But after months of deliberation it seems highly unlikely the decision will be overturned. I wonder what it means for the Xbox Showcase coming next month, considering Microsoft said yesterday it wanted to close the deal this week.

Re: Marvel's Spider-Man 2 Will Be Darker, 'Our Empire Strikes Back'

DuncanMcleod

@Dtrain45 He had his goofy moments over the years, but when McFarlane created the character he intended for him to be creepy monster with personality. In Amazing and Ultimate Spider-Man, Venom is far from being funny. The concept of the symbiote being a funny character really appeared in Venom comic books (when writers had to find new ways for the character to reach a wider audience) and in the movie adaptation.

@twitchtvpat I didn’t mention it on purpose, but yes I’m very curious to see how they handle that idea !

Re: Talking Point: What Free March 2021 PS Plus Games Do You Want?

DuncanMcleod

@rjejr Actually, it's possible to add PS5 games to your Library even if you don't own the system. You need to install the PS app on your phone, head to the store and look for the game in the search bar. It should show up as "free to download" and you can add it to your Library. You won't see it appearing on your PS4 Library, but when you get the PS5 it will show up.
It's actually mad that Sony didn't communicate more on this process, since I've seen so many people not aware of it ...

Re: Crash Bandicoot 4 Has Local Multiplayer, According to PSN Listing

DuncanMcleod

@elvisfan1 I think you're putting way to much importance on the completion of your trophy list. Don't get me wrong, I'm a trophy hunter too, but the main interest of a game is to have fun. And one of the best way to have fun is to play with a friend or gf and have a good laugh. Even if that means giving up on a Platinium trophy, honestly it doesn't matter that much, does it ?
And to be fair, this generation hasn't seen as many local coop games as the previous ones, so I think we can't really complain about coop games ruining solo experiences.

Re: Star Wars: Squadrons Has Cameos and Customisable Pilots, Two Multiplayer Modes Revealed

DuncanMcleod

They are basically re-selling the Space Battle mode from BF2 for 40$. For all people who loved the Rogue Squadrons games back in the day, this game could have been something to look forward to. But I bet EA is going to try to cash in once again on the Star Wars franchise by selling us loads of spaceship's skins to "support" the game. Maybe EA's Play presentation is going to prove me wrong, but so far I'm being very cautious about this game.
