Re: Review: Shadow Tactics: Blade of the Shogun (PS4)

CountFunkula78

Great review, I've had my on the PC version for ages. I'd think about the ps4 version, but I can still feel the pain of the massive loading times of that PS2 version of commandos 2. I know it's a different game from a different Dev, on a different system, but that's how bad those loading times were (commandos 2 is a great game, by the way)

Re: UK Retailer GAME's New Elite Scheme Sucks

@solocapers
Ha! They tried to spin that crap at me when I bought my Ps4 - went in and asked for a 1tb ps4, spotty teenager told me I'd have to pick from the black Friday 'deals' on offer (it was the Monday after).
I said great, I'll take the one with star wars and until dawn. Kid goes in the back and neck beard 'manager' tells me I can't have it because they're not doing those deals ('those are black Friday deals, and its Monday today, sir')
Didn't even particularly care for the deal in the first place, and the condescension was really irritating. Anyway, I really wanted to take home a ps4 so I persevered. Asked what they could offer me. 500 GB ps4 with uncharted remastered pack in, and last of us remastered extra. Said I'd played all those games, didn't really want 500gb, but would go with it if they would let me change last of us for another game of same value, or failing that just a stand alone 1tb console (they let it slip that they still had the stock). Nope 'sony won't let us bla bla bla'
Sony wont let you sell consoles? Are you dumb? You're going to make me buy a console from a supermarket? You've actually got what I want, but won't sell it to me?
Laughed in his face, walked out ordered the exact bundle I wanted from shopto and about £200 extra on games and never gone back
Fools.

Re: South Park: The Fractured but Whole Finally Kills Kenny 17th October

CountFunkula78

I hope the delay is to coincide with the new TV season.....
I really need the towelie dlc, so will probably break my no preordering rule.
I adored the first game, and I watch south park on almost constant rotation, but although the mechanics and tone were solid, did anyone else think the balance was off? Fights tended to be super easy with an occasional super hard one.

Re: Review: The Surge (PS4)

CountFunkula78

Wow, that escalated quickly, huh?

@LiamCroft
Thanks for the review, can't have been fun to push through a game you obviously didn't enjoy! Was going to nip out and get it this morning, but will wait now. Early impressions looked good, but LOTF was dreck and if the game doesn't hold its colour, I will wait.
You mentioned there are no heavy/light attacks, but I also read elsewhere that you can hold down buttons to charge heavy attacks, is that the case?

I will definitely get it fairly soon, as I've been wanting a sci fi souls for some time.
Don't reply to the detractors or feel you have to justify your opinion. Obviously none of us have actually played it, so can't really talk, although I do hope I end up with a different opinion!
Cheers

There's a tradition of subheading puns in game journalism, especially in UK games journalism, that goes back to the early days of print media.
It's almost a competition to be as lame as possible.
Chris Scullion recently had a great retrospective of some of his best and worst on Tired Old Hack.
I suggest trying one of the more asinine US sites such as US gamer or Polygon (both great at what they do, but take themselves too seriously) if it bothers you that much, mate.
Some of us quite enjoy it, but unfortunately we Brits aren't really known for our sense of humour, are we?

Space butt... like when Han Solo wears tight trousers? šŸ˜‚

I know what you mean about price drops tho, I bought Deus ex at launch (admittedly only £35 or so on shopto), and it was a tenner within months, wish I'd waited!

Re: Rumour: Egyptian Assassin's Creed to Feature Two Lead Heroes

CountFunkula78

Of course they're bringing back the naval combat...
The trouble is that AC has become such a swill trough of gameplay mechanics, pointless fetching, convoluted story and what seems like design-by-committee that I'm not even sure that ubisoft really knows what works any more. Most of the things AC set out to do has been done better by other series by now.
I'm sure it will look very pretty and be very big, but I'm just as sure that there will be no dedicated 'sneak' button, the parkour will be shonky, and I'll spend ages planning the perfect assassination just to end up having to gank the guy and run away due to a pigeon farting at the wrong time.
It's not like I particularly dislike the series either, but they've had years to get on top of these issues...
Oh Ubisoft.....

Re: Review: Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap (PS4)

CountFunkula78

My original cartridge was slightly broken, so that if you touched it at all, the game would crash. It will be nice to play it without worrying about someone knocking the console/cart!
Great to see this series getting some love, the previous game (WB in Monster Land) was the first game I truly lusted after. You never forget your first crush šŸ˜€

Re: Uncharted 4 Brings Home the BAFTA for Best Game

CountFunkula78

@Galvatron
Wow, reap the whirlwind huh?
The responses here are some of the reason it wins so much - people ADORE these games. They are also super accessible, and something of a flagship series for PS and Sony. When I binged through U4 in December, even my wife was interested (hates most games other than GTA or racing in general).
I've played them all except 3 (inc. Vita game), and think they are good.
At the risk of attracting my own slice of whirlwind, I agree with you that they are a bit linear - but that's what people like about them, besides if you'd like an open world version, the newer Tomb Raider games hit that spot for me.
The gameplay difficulty can be adjusted, particularly by turning off the hints/button prompts.
Lastly, there is clear development through the series - U4 on ps4 is vastly superior to U1 on ps3, some people have only played the earlier games years ago and think 'what's the fuss?', but U4 really holds its own. ND have almost carved out their own sub-genre of the third person action game.
If you compare U4 to a really poor example of the style - the order 1866 - you can really feel the difference.
Anyway, it's definitely worth £23, so give it a go.

Re: Review: Drawn to Death (PS4)

CountFunkula78

The art is unique and well implemented.
The gameplay is ok. Bit of a Power Stone vibe, which could be fun in a trashy way.
The 'edgy' humour? If that frog in the tutorial was a real person, it'd get a slap if it talked like that round my ends.

Re: Hands On: Is Mass Effect: Andromeda Really That Bad?

CountFunkula78

@ShogunRok
Thanks for the reply, I thought your article was well balanced and seemed fair.

It was bad enough that you can't choose a race for your character (I was looking forward to playing as a Krogan or Drell), but most of them aren't even in it....
I didn't think Thane got enough screen time in ME 2 (same goes for the Geth character), no Drell or Krogan squad mate in me3, and now they drop most of the races altogether! I got the impression that Thane was really popular...Maybe it's just me.

I think they have totally focused on the wrong things, but I hope the game finds its audience. This might be it for me & Bioware now, too many bland games that demand too much time.

The more I think about this the more frustrating it seems. Why send the Salarians (with their notably short lifespan) to populate far off galaxies? You'd choose races with a higher chance of survival.
I know that they are a high tech 'scientist' race, if only there was some other race with an affinity for tech, but that perhaps needed to find a new homeworld because they were living in a flotilla after losing their planet.....Anything like that in the existing fiction?

Re: Poll: Has the Mass Effect: Andromeda Backlash Put You Off the Game?

CountFunkula78

If it were just the animation I wouldn't be so bothered, but the dialogue I've heard sounds awful, quests look bland and I'm disappointed that we still have to play as a human...All those races, and I can't be any of them. I was hoping they'd add ship-to-ship combat too, doesn't seem likely at this point....
I think I'll give it a miss and replay Buck Rogers : Countdown to Doomsday instead. Still the best Sci-Fi RPG, and it was released in 1990.

Re: Ubisoft Games Join DOOM in Latest EU PlayStation Store Sale

CountFunkula78

I finished Doom on Tuesday night... £12 is well worth it.
Campaign is not padded, there is not a shred of fat on that game.
I found some bosses to be a bit frustrating (if only because load times are a little long), but that's just me.
Titanfall 2 has better (but very different) MP, but Doom is the best sp FPS on ps4 right now.

Re: Review: Clicker Heroes (PS4)

CountFunkula78

@Folderoll

No, GTA isn't a separate issue. Both are ultimately pressing buttons to make flashy pictures and numbers change, this just boils it down to it's most basic level. Your brain is filling in the blanks and creating enjoyment for itself.
Anyway, as I said above, I don't like this line of thinking....

Re: Review: Clicker Heroes (PS4)

CountFunkula78

These things are absolute evil, and I'm only slightly joking.
Cookie Clicker almost made me question why I bother playing games at all, and if games are a waste of time so are films, books, music, art, everything... Nothing but a dark path to regret. Luckily I have very strong willpower!
Really useful as a psychological experiment to show how the brain handles reward and motivation, but almost criminal to use as a microtransaction generator.

Re: No Man's Sky Finds the Path to a Major PS4 Patch

CountFunkula78

As time progresses, I lose more interest. There have always been better examples of NMS's original premise (Elite)... and I think it will be obsolete and superceded very soon, even on ps4.

I bought it at launch (not preorder), but traded next day for Overwatch. Thought I might rebuy at some point, but I'm not so sure any more.
