@DennisReynolds I can understand people being upset and fighting for change. It's the "I'll never buy a Playstation again crowd" that pi**es me off because most of them will soon change their minds when the PS6 comes with Uncharted 5, Spider-Man 3, Horizon 3, new God of War and a Bloodborne remake. And it's not like the other platforms are any better when it's comes to consumer rights, even on Steam you have to sign in order to access your games.
At least the ones wanting PlayStation to change are ones who want to stay on the platform.
@TheSingularity If Push Square is not careful it will end up having the opposite effect. People will very quickly get sick of hearing the same thing over again. Especially if they keep reposting the same article such as the Playstation social media one.
I just don't think it's going to happen. The physical market is just too small as far as Sony is concerned. The best that people can do now is demand better terms on digital games but your likely needing government intervention because the corporations have no incentive to do so.
@NerdyPaul Except they don't tend to come from the platform holders. Their audience expect high budget games that can't be played elsewhere. If Sony made a game that looked like Lethal Company or REPO people will be like "what the hell is this?" You only need to look at the reaction to God of War Sons of Sparta to see that lower budget versions of their IPs aren't that desirable.
@Sonofken It's strange how people think that other platforms are any better just because Sony are doing away with discs. Nintendo's key cards is a step towards that platform being digital only. Xbox is rapidly losing the little bit of relevance that they already had. And PC is now more expensive then ever if you want a rig that's close to PS5 levels.
If Sony aren't going to backtrack then people need to come together to demand far better terms for the digital future.
Lower prices and/or more steeper discounts.
Terms such as a better refund system.
Game sharing among friends.
The ability to sell back onto the store at a fraction of the cost you paid.
Physical copies give access to digital versions.
PS3 backwards compatible.
Allow games keys to be sold at other retailers.
Sony need to set a new standard on digital store fronts for consoles for the better of its business and consumer base now.
This is a post I saw from a guy called Keimar on Eurogamer's comments. I thought it was an interesting one to share.
"Posted this before but, the projected revenue from physical discs was less than the cost of maintaining the pressing factories. Spoke with a former Sony DADC Enfield staff a few years ago so make of this as conjecture:
The site was costing more in utilities than what publishers were willing to pay for the discs. While the plant can make a disc for cents; the orders would have to be in the millions/day to even cover the basic bills, not even considering council tax, salaries, disruption penalties etc. Specifically, chemical water waste disposal was becoming too much.
Once you factor that maintenance and replacement parts for the plant was in a 5-10 year operational timeframe. Who on earth is going to invest in a 10 year disc making factory?
This was offset in the following years by moving the plants to cheaper countries; but the expense in transport costs and understandable reluctance from publishers to pay more have made physical production+distribution a risky margin business.
Although Sony would lose physical media buyers; this would be offset long term from a lack of resale market, leaner console assembly and not having to maintain the disc distribution channels - which were utilised on a weekly basis than the more typical monthly/quarterly hardware channels."
The timing could not of been worse when it comes to perception. Blade possibly getting cancelled just as Sony unveil Blade for their own exclusive game. Arkane are really talented but I feel sometimes they lack in execution which makes their games just a step or two behind GOTY contenders.
@Flobbots It depends on the state (no pun intended) the game is in. If it's good then it would be an interesting move by Sony, marketing would write itself "the game that PlayStation bought off Xbox."
@themightyant Oh I'm very aware. I just think it would be nice to suggest that some use a bit of common sense into the proceedings even if it is into the void.
Would never have guessed Loki for Ghost Rider's team.
Blade is such a great choice because he's long overdue to be in a fighting game.
And getting Nolan North back as Deadpool is a great get.
I don't know why people are surprised by this. It's always going to be worth Sony's time pursuing live service games because of the potential for huge revenue. Especially if they go into next gen with a system that will be slow out of the gate because of prices. I do think they need have better judgement on what could hit though. Like imagine if Sony got Hoyoverse before they made it big with Genshin Impact.
I hate that it had come to this but it was slowly inevitable. Bungie were heading for the wall before Sony bought them. What really cemented these difficult last few years was Bungie's insistence that it'd operate independently. Sony had to agree to the terms because they were an important get for them after they missed out on Leyou Technologies. It was the big non negotiable that brought Bungie to the table.
Ultimately it was that decision by Bungie executives that caused a lot of long term damage to the health of the studio.
@For-Kier I mean the dating sim was a tiny project that a few were working on. Bungie has a lot of problems but a tiny team making a side project wasn't one of them.
Sadly it was coming. Pete Parsons and co have wrecked a lot of livelihoods through their greed and ineptitude. Maybe now with D2 ending support, Sony will have drastically cut the amount of money Bungie will have been spending. Hopefully Sony can use this time to take stock of the studio and look to see what project they can do that can bring the studio back on its feet.
My nephew is super hyped for this and after reading the article, I think I am too. Love the little roguelike element they've added to make the racing more tougher.
@get2sammyb The problem is the Helix Sony won't want Xbox to get a lengthy run as the only next gen system. Though I do think it would be wise to let them go first especially if they have to deal with the negative press that will come with selling such a pricey console, even more so if they scale back on their PC hybrid ambitions.
@get2sammyb The interesting thing about the price for me is Valve are a company that can't buy components in bulk or take a loss on a sale like Sony so it could be an interesting ballpark for PS6's price.
There's been some interesting theories about Phranque that I've been reading including that it could contain the entire cosmos or links to Metatron's Cube. All of which I've found very interesting, just a shame that too many go to the "nah cube sucks" rhetoric.
@Stevey_Mac How are they supposed to sound though? In Ragnarok we had Atreus, Thrudd and Angrboda who all sounded like teenagers compared to the other characters. And Rue and Phranque aren't from the Norse realm as far as we're aware so it's likely a deliberate choice to make them seem odd when compared to what we know.
@PuppetMaster I think so too. ComicCon is next month I believe and I reckon they will announce a beta for console and PC and possibly reveal the DLC characters.
