Bungie boss Justin Truman is out, after the Washington studio confirmed it’s laying off a “significant” number of staff earlier today.
The total number of job losses hasn’t been disclosed, but scuttlebutt pegs it at anywhere up to 400 employees, which is roughly half of the team.
Truman took over from divisive leader Pete Parsons less than a year ago, but hasn’t been able to substantially improve the firm’s fortunes.
The studio effectively sunsetted Destiny 2 earlier this month, while Marathon has failed to find a particularly large playerbase, despite positive impressions.
Sony’s committed to the future of the aforementioned extraction shooter, but it’s going to require a huge effort to revive its fortunes, given its floundering concurrent player numbers on storefronts like Steam.
New projects are allegedly in the early stages of pre-production, although none of them are Destiny 3.
According to Forbes journalist Paul Tassi, ex-Guerrilla producer Poria Torkan has been selected to run the studio. He’s been with the developer for 11 years now, most recently serving as VP of Operations.
We wish luck to Torkan and his lieutenants, because steering this seemingly sinking ship is going to require one helluva steady hand.
