Sony Will Have Capacity to Continue Manufacturing Some Game Discs Beyond 2028 Cut-Off Date 1

Call it copium, but a small window of opportunity for Sony to reverse its decision on physical discs has opened.

A letter to publishers from the platform holder reveals they “will still be able to place re-orders for existing PlayStation disc games” after the January 2028 cut-off date.

The tidbit, shared by GameFile’s Stephen Totilo, confirms the company will still have capacity to manufacture some discs after the previously communicated date.

This means that any publisher that releases a game physically prior to January 2028 will be able to order additional runs, meaning Sony will be retaining some manufacturing capacity once the cut-off has passed.

Now this production line is likely to be dramatically reduced, but it does open a small window of opportunity for PlayStation to walk back this deeply unpopular decision.

I reported previously that its Austrian manufacturing facility is already retraining staff in preparation for the transition, but fans will be hopeful they can persuade the platform holder to reconsider its plans.
