Huh, nothing about making my PS5 Pro worth the money I shelled out? Oh well.
First showcase/direct/SoP that I've came away from only interested in one game shown (Wolverine).
@UltimateOtaku91 First one that I’ve come away with none. Best thing I can say about the State of Play is “At least Alan Wake 2 will get a spike in player count.”
@somnambulance Yeah just seemed like Sony got the scraps for the third party trailers. Alan Wake 2 and TLOU 2 coming to Playstation Plus we're better announcements than most of the trailers.
@UltimateOtaku91 Seriously, this show was really disappointing third-party wise
Wolverine looked awesome. Sentinel HAS to mean that the X-Men gang is nearby, also Omega Red!?!! (That was him right).
Insomniac turned the blood up to mortal kombat level to quell all the doubters.
DW3 hits me in feels as a big Musou fan and just a game my friends and I spent hours playing split screen back in the day.
Saros, Wolverine both looks excellent. The Disco Elysium looking sequel (Forgot the title and PS doesn’t have an article on it — “[Something] Parades”), Code Vein 2, and Crimson Desert all look really, really promising also. Then the next tier for me is the GT7 update and the Flight Simulator, both are things I could see dipping into when the mood strikes.
Lots of people should be excited about the Battlefield and the Metroidvania games, but those aren’t my cup of tea.
All that and then the fantastic PS+ announcements.
I don’t know why people think this was poor. I’d rate it as great at least, but closer to excellent.
I love tekken especially tekken 3 but I just know there will be no trophies 😕 😢
A dynasty warriors remake is really kinda weird if you think about it…. Every entry has been a remake of sorts
I just... I just want to see Sony back to their old self. This generation has been the worst game library of 1st party and 2nd party titles they've offered by far - and this didn't really help move that needle.
@CVCubbington I did notice that most of the game trailer were taken from PS5 Pro gameplay, so I’d say you’re in a good place. For those rocking the base PS5, there’s no guarantee the visuals will look as good.
There was nothing truly creative or original here. All three major video game developers seem very cautious this generation, preferring to stick with what they know will sell well. True creativity these days is almost exclusively found among smaller third-party developers and especially in the indie scene. But unfortunately, that's always been the case in such industries—be it comics, video games, or films. Creativity can quickly lead to the downfall of a company if you don't produce what the masses want. That's why safe projects like a Wolverine game are necessary: Everyone knows Wolverine, everyone likes Wolverine—so it's better to make Wolverine than risk something new and creative.
Wolverine and dynasty warriors 3 were the highlights of that show
@w1p3out I totally agree. This generation, I can’t say Sony’s even been able to launch one essential game a year in their first party line-up. Hopefully Ghost of Yotei is worthwhile. Got a fear it’ll feel iterative, but I want it to be a hit.
@UltimateOtaku91 Yeah, it’s sort of weird. It sort of feels like maybe Sony’s burned bridges or there’s just not that much on the third party horizon? I suppose we’ll get more info on third parties at the Xbox showcase perhaps? I don’t know if everyone’s going back into their hole due to the event horizon of GTA6 or what. At least there’s Capcom…
I was dubious about Wolverine... until this trailer. Now I'm all in. Also excited for Saros, Deus Ex Remastered, Nioh 3, Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, Crimson Desert, and Code Vein 2!
didn't watch it. judging by the bullet points, this looked like another uneventful turd of a show. of course, this is the AAA industry at large and not just a sony problem...
I don’t believe a State of Play was warranted today. They could’ve just announced Wolverine at the Game Awards or another major event like a bigger PlayStation showcase. Saros I get but they could’ve just announced the info at the Tokyo Game Show.
Don’t get me wrong; I loved seeing Wolverine & Saros. Wolverine is going to be friggen phenomenal combat-wise. But other than Alan Wake 2 coming to PS+ and the two mentioned earlier, I wasn’t that hyped. Chronoscript looked super interesting but thats still a major wait and see.
I really dont get people. I thought people wanted more indie/AA games. Here we have games like Zero Parades by the devs of the highly acclaimed Disco Elysium and a very unique and creative indie like Chronoscript. Both seemingly Playstation (console) exclusives. We have big AAA titles with release dates or windows like Saros and Wolverine. I mean i’d say Playstation gamers are eating pretty good
@LogicStrikesAgain I feel like I don’t fit in here because I like Sony and enjoying playing games instead of whining about them. 🤣
Changed my mind on Wolverine — way, way too gory, so that's out.
Saros is Returnal 2, and I didn't like Returnal.
Zero new first party announcements concerns me a lot.
Basically, there was nothing for me here.
.
@doctommaso As in newer than Wolverine and Saros?
@ButterySmooth30FPS I'm talking about new announcements. Things to expect going forward on PS5. Are we waiting for PS6 now? We might be.
I'm hyped to play these 5 games the most, though I'll still wait a few years before buying them.
2026
The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin - January 28
Code Vein II - January 30
Nioh 3 - February 06
SAROS - March 20
Wolverine - Fall 2026
@CVCubbington nope. We got got.
Atleast we got some Returnal gameplay... sorry I mean SAROS gameplay 😅 And Wolverine looks absolutely insane 😬 But some exciting new announcement would've been nice. I really thought that the GOW controller reveal was going to be followed up by a new GOW game announcement 🙈 Imagine...
I was happy to see Wolverine has gone for a more violent tone than the Spider-Man games and is looking very good. Also, finally GT7 is getting 2 fantastic new and proper race tracks in Yas Marina and Gilles Villeneuve and it was a bit of a shame the Mega Man content for Sonic had already been leaked but it does look cool.
The only other interesting new announcement was the speakers, which I'll probably get
Insomniac are doing amazing work with their comic book games. Kind of wish they weren't just working on them though. Would even take ratchet and clank dlc.
My PS5 has pretty much been a streaming box for the past 6 months, and I don’t see it being much else next year. I don’t know how Sony manages to make almost everything in their SOP’s look so similar- hack and slash bad guys in a darkly lit space. The whole point of a showcase is to show the variety of games coming.
In my opinion Wolverine looks uninspired and held together with a bunch of QTE’s like Spider-Man 2 was.
@ButterySmooth30FPS there’s a whole lot of us who feel this way. But people who have negative things to say are simply louder.
@naruball I think there's fair criticism to be had here, and actually a whole of it to be directed at Sony lately. It can be called whining, but we've all invested our money into a product we want to offer good support, and this gen Sony has been largely dropping the ball.
There were some solid titles shown, don't get the complaints. We get multiple showcases throughout the year instead of the normal two times of the past and on top of that slot of big developers also have their own showcases recently where they also show the games. On top of that, almost everything is leaked before it's even showed, spoiling pretty much every possible big surprises.
Off course I would love to see more first and second party games, because we know those are almost always top titles. Hopefully we see more of those at the next state of play.
@doctommaso Sony are mostly done with announcing 1st party games who are still far from finished. You're not gonna see 1st party games with 3-5 years away like Wolverine (announced in September 2023) anymore.
You can see most of Sony recent announcement had half to one year release date:
The only outlier is ND Intergalactic who got announced at last year TGA and didn't have a release date. Either they aim for next year or 2027.
There's left Santa Monica, Firesprite, Bluepoint, Bend, Media Molecule, LFG, and Guerilla. Maybe next year one or two of them will show their new game. But until then, 3rd party games will fill the gap, which i think there's nothing to complaint here.
@PuppetMaster Fair points. Perhaps a rephrase — this generation, Sony has released fewer first party games that appeal to me, per year, than PS4 has, which makes it doubly concerning to me that nothing new was announced I can look forward to. I'll try to stay hopeful!
@ButterySmooth30FPS Never a better comment. Some people cannot wait for any piece of news to simply whine about it. I think its infantile, but its not going away so I come to push less and less as its full of people who dont seem to like games anymore.
I wont let them spoil my enjoyment though... I just go elsewhere.
@w1p3out I'm so bored of Sony's endless parade of third-person action games.
Things like Twisted Metal and (heyyo) WipEout are what got me hooked into the ecosystem to begin with. I appreciate they're not mega money spinners, but I've zero interest in the direction they're going. Even Housemarque has pivoted away from pure arcade.
I barely turn on my PS5 these days, but I'm genuinely tempted to buy a new PC and go play BallisticNG until my eyes are raw.
In the rating poll, I gave this an 'Excellent' after that amazing Wolverine trailer / info.
However, they really, really need a 'splash screen' before each trailer clearly stating the game type/s (SP campaign, MP, LS etc); whether it is exclusive; and Pro Enhanced.
On the 1st point it irks me if this is not clear; and for the other 2 points, they should be shouting exclusivity and Pro enhancement from the rooftops! Ive known people in sales and marketing that would just cringe to see how bad Sony are in this area. The only thing we get is if the footage is from Pro - which admittedly a lot was.
I actually think this Sop was good with some good announcements. The games that were shown all look great and I can't wait for some of them to release so I can play them.
Ghost of Yotei is my big PS hype, so I am happy. Hope that some traction/News comes out about a new Horizon game that isn’t lego (granted I will be buying that for switch) as that will be my next PS game. Given the length of these open world games I’ll be set for a while.
