Saros, the upcoming roguelite shooter from Returnal developer Housemarque, has received its first gameplay footage, and it looks every bit as fast-paced and action-packed as its predecessor.

Looking like Returnal 2 in all but name, Saros is a sci-fi third-person shooter with an arcadey feel.
Playing as Arjun Devraj, you're forced to fight on a shape-shifting planet named Carcosa. Story details are being kept mostly under wraps, but you know the deal ā shoot everything that moves (and probably some things that don't).

One new gameplay wrinkle in Saros is a shield you can activate to absorb some enemy projectiles, giving you a brief respite amid the chaos.
Unlike Returnal, Saros is a roguelite, meaning there are impactful permanent upgrades you'll acquire between runs. This means you won't be starting from ground zero every time you try again; you'll always be making some tangible progress.
One upgrade you can unlock is a second chance, reviving you one time after a fatal blow so you can try and keep going.
As well as the new gameplay footage, Housemarque has announced a release date, and it's pretty soon. Saros launches on PS5 on 20th March 2026, and will be enhanced on PS5 Pro too.

People calling this Returnal 2/reskin, I mean why would they change the combat when it was god tier in Returnal, some where along the line I think some people just don't know what they want from a game anymore, I for one can't wait to play this!

Literally a reskin instead of the evolution from this showing at least. Hope they have "new stuff" in there; otherwise it won't justify it being a new IP and not a sequel or even expansion.
Meh it just looked like returnal , they are the masters of fireworks though , i would've liked them to be a bit more ambitious , maybe do something more than just shooty shooty
Game looks good and using the King in Yellow as a story base is never a bad idea. I wonder if the eclipsed sun iconography that's so potent in this is the yellow sign?

Returnal is absolutely amazing, and Saros looks no different. Wondering if there will be some crossover, story-wise, because it is very obviously āReturnal 2ā. We shall see!
The shield makes me think it might be a little more accessible than Returnal but who knows. Iām not against that because I was terrible and it took me forever to finally beat it lol
Whilst Wolverine will get everyone's attention it's Saros by far that gets mine. Gameplay is king in Housemarque titles.

This is what Returnal should have been for me. Couldnāt even beat the first boss. This looks like Returnal on Easy mode.
But tbh it just looked like a third person doom in terms of gameplay.
This is just a Returnal reskin. So i am not getting it. But i hope it finds a little better audience than Returnal did. Pass for me. But i am sure this kept the game in budget. Which is good.

Returnal was Housemarque first effort after they ditched the small budget arcadey-top down-bullet hell-twin stick shooters formula. But luckily, Housemarque keep their arcadey shooter-bullet hell DNA with Returnal and it still sold well for them and Sony to greenlight a new game.
So it's normal if Housemarque stick with Returnal formula for Saros but with some QoL here and there as well different characters, story, and biome. But somehow some people didn't like it and ask for a complete overhaul.
I just never understand this obsession from people who keeps yapping and suggesting that devs must completely overhaul their next game and change their core DNA. It's change for the sake of change, no clear goal or good reason for the overhaul, which what devs needs to avoid.
Anyway...Saros Looks great. I'm glad Housemarque always keep their arcade shooter-bullet hell DNA with their games despite they're not small budget top down-twin stick shooter anymore. Please don't change Housemarque š

Day 1 for me as Returnal still is my favorite PS5 game so far, but this is Returnal 2 in everything but the name.
Idk, I hated Returnal with a deep passion. I was so pumped about Returnal until I learned about rogue type gaming which I've come to hate.
This looks really good, but I wonāt lie, I was kind of disappointed in the reveal. I kind of expected the same formula as is Returnal, but this looks almost like an exact copy. If you would have shown me this and Returnal at the same time I would think it is the same game.
I was absolutely obsessed with Returnal. Played it at release before the nerfing, having to leave my console in rest mode if I wanted a break while I had a good run going. Despite the brutal difficulty, I loved the game and hold it as one of my favorite PS5 experiences. Actually, one of my favorite gaming experiences, full stop.
I booted it back up recently because I never got around to trying the Tower of Sisyphus and the gameplay loop immediately clicked again. Iād say itās the most satisfying pure gameplay this generation.
So Saros being heavily Returnal inspired is actually perfect.

I don't like FS at all and agree with you overall when it comes to games they make most of the time. Still, if this is a Returnal sequel, just call it that. This is not a new IP from the first looks of it and just the same game.
I absolutely loved and played the hell out of reternal. However when you tease a new game from a studio that doesn't usually make sequels, it's kind of misleading to come to find out it's just basically returnal2 with a different title and lore but overall the same game play and hollow gamey World design.
I knew it was very likely going to be (it may have already been announced as one), but I was really hoping this wasnāt going to be a Roguelite. I get so bored and burnt out with that genre.
Very peculiar. I wasnāt overblown with Returnal, but itās a game I really wish I liked, and I will go back to give another whirl.
This, (and admittedly as a Brit this is a personal preference), I hated the voice acting in the trailer (but I couldnāt play FF16 in English for the same reason, this very much is a me problem)⦠however the combat looked⦠okayā¦

@Kraven this is exactly my thought. I loved returnal, itās still my favorite actual ps5 exclusive. But this trailer left me a little disappointed. I hope itās more but this is literally the same game with a few QoL improvements. If they wouldāve called it Returnal 2 everything would be fine but because itās a ānew gameā Iām sure itās going to get knocked in reviews for all the copy/paste thatās going on.

Looks like a sequel that is basically an iteration on Returnal. Given this is the exact same formula that this year has given us Silksong and now Hades 2, I can only assume the negativity in the comments is from people who didn't like Returnal in the first place?
I'm sure Housemarque will have improved the original formula here, on what was already an excellent game.
Where do I start? OK I'm seeing elements of returnal,outriders,godfall,remnant 1 and 2 and im also getting a bit a of a too human vibe as well..other than that it looks pretty cool but its just been done before.
Trying to insult a video game by saying "it just looks like another Returnal" is like trying to insult a football player by saying "he just looks like another Messi"
@guacguacboo this looks infinitely more accessible and forgiving that Returnal. Really excited to get my hands on it, I did think it looked like Returnal a little too much but I played it after the SOP and you know what, I need more Returnal
Great trailer, but the dev could have sold that so much better. Maybe it's part of the indie vibe? But like a five minute conversation could have made it so much snappier.
Why are you telling people that you can activate the shield with L2? How is knowing it's on L2 convincing people to buy your game?
If you're going to talk about the shield at all, tell me what's cool about it, tell me the strategy, tell me how they've combined that ability with another ability in a smart way, tell me it's one of many other ways to play out a run...

Good, traditional arcade shooter with great atmosphere and a bit of emotion and mystery looks great.
It looks like a game that knows what it is, leans fully into it, and doesnāt try to pad it out with needless fluff.
@Lowdefal Itās a hard thing to pin point, but itās kind of the same issue I have with most modern British movies / TV, everything just sounds really forced and far too pronounced (also the fact FF16 had the voice of Chris Finch from The Office, that was far too jarring š)
I donāt know, maybe itās too close to home. I hear enough English accents everyday, when I play a game I want to be transported somewhere else. As I said, this is very much a āmeā problem, Iām not saying itās bad⦠just not to my personal taste.

Returnal is a masterpiece to me, one of the most immersive, atmospheric and dialed in games I've ever played. Best use of the dual sense in ps5 too.

Returnal with a different setting and lore. Looks too similar and not a significant evolution after 5 years.. to wait and see more

This is EXACTLY what I wanted from this game: similar to Returnal but with some differences that make it unique. It kind of feels like the Quake to Doom.
The only thing I would change is that I wish the main character didn't have a trench cloak. The flapping jacket is really off-putting in this context. Maybe we can ditch the jacket or get a more action-oriented outfit somehow during the storyline.
Day-One buy for sure!!!
