You know the story by now: Microsoft paid to delay Rise of the Tomb Raider for a year on the PlayStation 4, with the action adventure due out on Sony's system in late 2016. As big fans of the franchise, we've actually been eagerly awaiting a release date for the critically acclaimed sequel, but it just won't come.
We thought for certain that Square Enix would "officially" announce the title for the PS4 at E3 2016, but the show's come and gone, and still there's no word. Don't get us wrong, we didn't expect to see this during Sony's press conference or anything, but we thought that it would at least get dated on the PlayStation Blog.
But alas – the wait goes on! We wonder how the Japanese publisher's going to handle the PS4 version of this release. The game can currently be purchased for around $30 on the Xbox One, so a $60 port is not going to fly. Square Enix would be smart to bundle all of the title's DLC and flog it for half-price we reckon. What do you think?

It'll all like Crap worth the amount of stuff that's coming out, with that said though what exactly was the "big" Tomb Raider news from E3?
I couldn't care less now, E3 was the final chance this game had with me and they didn't even bother.
All my interest (even though it was really small) is now gone.
I never took it as written that this game was definitely coming for PS4, but perhaps the smartest thing to do would announce Tomb Raider 3 (no, not that one) as a multi format release, and give a port of Rise of Tomb Raider as a pre-order bonus? It would be something of a peace offering to anyone upset about the timed exclusivity.
I will only THINK about buying this game if it comes out at half price or less! After the slap in the face they gave us they don't deserve more than half
I'm glad they didn't announce anything at E3. They should wait until 3 months out till release and announce a complete edition for discounted price.
@RawShark It's definitely coming to PS4, they announced it.
I wish they'd also port over the X360 port for the PS3; but that's probably a wishful stretch.
The X360 version is actually harder to find and tends to go for more on eBay.
you know i kinda gave up on this one, you can't even pre-order it anywhere yet even though it's been confirmed to be coming to PS4
it's as if they DON'T want to us to know it's coming out on PS4
I must admit I had expected that this game would have had a PS4 date by now. As for the pricing, I am in 2 minds about it. Whilst I know its cheaper on Xbox now, it has been out for Xbox a while. Its still a AAA game and 'new' to PS4. Crystal Dynamix still had to put the work in to make the game and didn't put 'half' the work in for PS4 users. Maybe what might be fair is to release a 'definitive' or GotY edition on PS4 - maybe simultaneously with XB1 at the same price
Half price and all dlc would make me seriously consider the purchase. The first game was good
I'll still most likely pick this one up. I'm guessing we won't be getting much of a window between announcement and release.
Like many PS4 owners at this point, interest is pretty much gone. Square Enix with the first game sold on both platforms, but I think that combined with the remastered version for the new consoles pushed it over the edge into profitability so a sequel could then be considered.
Instead of going dual platform and keeping the momentum going, they cut a deal for an Xbox One only version. It probably sold ok, but half as much as it potentially could have. MS gave them a check, which helped to cover, but now it's an Xbox One version that did not do big numbers, and a PS4 version coming with momentum lost, having to sell for a reduced amount, and up against many big PS4 games coming before, during and after a potential release.
The silver lining is MS seems to have learned its lesson, as it has inferred in interviews, about buying to make games exclusive. Big different between IP/company that is exclusive to a system (Naughty Dog, etc.) and writing a big check to get marketshare leverage while aggravating half the fan base.
I may change my tune if TR2 comes out at a good price and its PS4 version offers some high quality graphics (this is the first native TR designed ground up for new consoles), but at this point there is so much great stuff out and cool stuff coming for PS4 that TR is definitely on the back burner.
I can't see them getting away with full price when the game has been out for 12 months. To be honest I'd forgotten about this game. Loved the first one but the timed exclusively was a kick in the teeth for ps gamers.
I played it, and it was pretty good. Definitely wouldn't buy it again, and even I didn't pay full price for it. With the amount of time passed I'd say it'd be smart to sell on PS4 with the DLC at least $30 - $40 on PS4. Seeing as how on PC I got it for $60 with the DLC on G2A.
I'll be getting this when it's releases for the PS4, it got some great reviews. To shun it because of the Microsoft exclusivity thing is just cutting your conk off to spite your face.
I loved the last tomb raider so I will be buying this one.
I was surprised they didn't show it at E3 as well. I think they should basically release it as a GOTY edition for PS4. However I bet they whack it out full price. Then when it hits £15 on Amazon I'll buy it.
I don't really buy games preowned anymore, but for this one i'm going to go out of my way to get it preowned. Somewhere in the £10-£15 range seems fair.
And yes I'm still very salty about this whole deal
Although I do understand if people want to boycot this as a matter of principle, I'd highly recommend giving it a try when it's out, the game's actually quite good. I know this is like cussing in church, but I actually enjoyed this game more than I did uncharted 4. And if a complete edition launches for $50 or less, with PS4s enhanced visuals, I think it's excellent value for money and a must own for every gamer.
this will definitely be full price, with all dlc included.
Disappointed, nothing to spend my Christmas vouchers on now. Could get DOOM i suppose, but you can't use the vouchers i normally get at GAME.
If the price is right ($30-$40) I'll buy it, if the price is $60 I'll wait until it discounted 50% on psn.
@FX102A Really?? I just saw a crew copies at my local Gamestop the other day when I went there to browse.
I am a massive Tomb Raider fan, really looking forward to the sequel. I am annoyed, firstly at the exclusivity and secondly that they are not at least giving PS fans a concrete date and maybe some added bonus to stop it sinking like a stone. I imagine that the Definitive Edition on PS4 sold more than Xbone (simply due to the install base though have no proof) so they are kicking themselves in the nads by not acknowledging a PS4 release.
I don't really have a problem on exclusivity for a new IP OR for an existing IP where the console brings something different (like the Dead Space Rails shooter for Wii) but this was a game that had a story and a narrative that left it wide open for a sequel. They mad a lot of money from PS owners with the first game, making the second an 'exclusive' for the smaller install base, releasing it at the most crowded time of the year for new titles and not even promising anything to the largest install base is just mad in my opinion. I will still get it but if they keep us holding on then I too would not be happy to pay full whack.
How do publishers keep messing up Tomb Raider?

I will be getting this still, but dont expect to be paying full price at this point. Definitely hoping for a 30 pound release. I imagine they will announce the date at gamescom/paris games week given tomb raider 's (traditionally) strong European presence.
All DLC bundled and full price is my prediction, kinda like Mass Effect 2 that came to PS3 a year later. We'll see, I'd obviously prefer half price, but I don't see that happening.
All DLC at 49,99 and call it a Complete Edition not GOTY Edition and please leave the horrible fonts away.
To tell you the truth i am not that bothered about playing it with all the new games coming out, but if i see on the PSN on sale in the future like Hardline i got for £3.99 i might get it then.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of the greatest games I've played on X1/PS4.
I strongly suggest people pick this up. Full price or not (lower prices are only earned by waiting it out at MSRP- developers must be given the chance to sell at full price- SE has not collected at full MSRP yet, so it's not fair to expect a half priced game until they do).
Ultimately it's people's choice, but you're missing a fantastic game.
Lost all interest in this game when I found out it was coming to PS4 a year after other formats. By the time it comes out for PS4 it will be about £10 on xbox. I like the Tomb Raider franchise but feel like they stuck two fingers up at the playstation and its usesr when they did the deal with Microsoft. I will buy the game when its heavly discounted down.
Ps plus freebie?
@DaveIsAnAceGamer I got bored of waiting and bought it on pc. It's an ok game but nowhere near as good as the first.
It loses all momentum about half way through and the story is very bland. It looks great though.
With regards to pricing I saw the xbox one version in morrisons yesterday for £15 so they can't price it too high.
I'm still waiting for the PS4 version of Rise of the Tomb Raider to be released so I can compare with the Xbox One version and decide. Good price and DLC included could help in selling me the PS4 version. By the way, Tomb Raider reboot is awesome!
With all the games in the lineup for this and early next year, they missed the boat. Obviously, more quality games = better, but surely the market will be more crowded when this comes out compared to last year. I know it's not on my - already pretty full - list of games to buy.
I've been waiting and waiting for a release date too. The year delay sucked really badly but I still want to play it based on how amazing the last game was. I bet you anything it comes out in October though, when I'm too busy with all the other games coming out >_<
I hope it was worth it, square Enix.
@WebHead
Well, I'm sure it was, but don't take it too personal.
I can already see people are upset over one game that got one year exclusivity. Now will demand all DLC, full season pass and they want it for $20. As if SE has somehow personally offended them and now expect them to come begging for forgiveness.
@JaxonH I don't think so, rise of the tomb raider sold horribly compared to it's predecessor, that's what squareenix get for abandoning console where's previous game sold better on it. There's no way it's worth $60 when it launch this fall on ps4, I rather replay uncharted 4 and wait until it discounted 50% on psn.
Huh you can preorder the PS4 version on amazon canada.
@JaxonH well no one's paying $60 for it. Hope they received a hefty briefcase.
@JaxonH well no one's paying $60 for it. Hope they received a hefty briefcase.
@JaxonH Ultimately, no matter how good the game may be, there's no value proposition for PS4 owners if the same game can be bought half-price or less elsewhere.
People will buy it, but Square Enix will either have to price it accordingly from the start or include extras in the box. Otherwise, people will just wait until retailers start slashing the price to where it needs to be.
It's too bad that such an awesome game didn't get the respect it deserved because of SquareEnix' idiotic business practices. And before anybody gets at me for being a fanboy, because it will happen my commenting history - full of plenty of criticisms for stuff Sony has done as well - speaks for itself. It was the height of scumbaggery to take this deal from MS and a slap in the face to the people who have supported SE in the biggest numbers. For one, it didn't exactly push Xbox One off the shelves and in ONE month Uncharted 4 topped current figures for Rise of the Tomb Raider. Maybe from a business perspective it was a 'good' deal, for the franchise and for the fans, the most of which are on PlayStation, it was a big middlefinger and since SE's bottomline doesn't do sh*t for me I have no problem saying the company deserves all the hate it gets. This isn't like EA creating a new IP or MS taking what has long been an Xbox franchise anyway (Dead Rising) and making it exclusive. This is flatout not knowing your audience. And all the great work by Crystal Dynamics doesn't get the respect it deserves because of some idiots in suits who have NO clue what their market is. Hell they can't decide what battle system that want for Final Fantasy XV and the real kicker is they show it off at MS' conference. It's not like FF sells at an 8-1 clip on PS over Xbox, but again it comes back to not knowing your audience. I won't get into how they've tried to sabotage Hitman and Deus Ex as well.
I completely despise this despicable company, even more than Konami or Capcom, and when Rise of the Tomb Raider does eventually hit PS4, it better be for a more than fair deal of $30 with ALL the content. That's the only way people will pay attention. It's a great game, top tier of this gen actually with Uncharted 4. It's just too bad SE had to go and screw it over by taking MS' blood money. Utterly pathetic.
@wiiware
If it's $60 some massive changes are needed because it will prove beyond a shadow of a doubt how absolutely clueless the leadership at SE is.
@JaxonH
Nah man, this was a slap in the face to most of the franchise's fanbase, I totally understand people's outrage. The death threats the people at Crystal Dynamics received and the threats of other stuff directed at Camilla Luddington were disgusting and it's unfortunate there's no policy to have those idiots face some kind of legal action to maybe get them back on the right path. The people who didn't do that stuff, however, those who are just fans but felt like they had been told to f off are absolutely justified in feeling that way. The equivalent would be EA deciding to make the upcoming Mass Effect a PS4 timed-exclusive. The Xbox fanbase would be infuriated and rigthly so. SE certainly owes an apology because as the sales numbers prove time and again, Xbox owners don't give a sh*t about that freaking company's games. $30 with all the content for the PS4 version is what needs to happen.
@get2sammyb
Here's the thing though. It's cheaper on Xbox One and PC. But you'd have to actually own an X1 or PC to get it cheap. If you do, then you paid your dues already. You had access to the game and chose to wait. So you earned the right to pay less. But for those who do not own an X1 or PC, they have not paid their dues. They have not had access at full price and have chosen to wait. SE has yet to collect MRSP on the PS4- and every game deserves to collect MSRP on every platform it launches on, be it now or a year from now. Perhaps a game 5 years old could launch for less, but 1 year? That's nothing.
PS gamers have to pay their dues just like everyone else. If people want to wait 6 months after launch and get it cheap, that's fine. But it's unreasonable to expect a high-budget AAA game to just launch as a budget title on a brand new platform. Developers have the right to collect full price first, and only then after they collect should price be expected to drop.
When Deus Ex was ported to Wii U, it was sold for $60. Even though it simultaneously launched on PS3/360 for half that price. Why? Because it was a new platform- it cost money to make the game for that new platform and it's only fair they sell at full market value and let price drop naturally.
Maybe SE will sell for less, maybe they'll include the DLC. But I don't think they should have to. There are millions of gamers who will gladly pay full price, and those that won't can wait. Or go buy for X1/PC. I don't think its fair to expect a developer to just give a game away simply because another platform got access first.
I think it would make sense to release a complete edition - all DLC - at full price and release it simultaneously for all formats - PS4, XB1 and PC. That way everyone is being charged the same price for all the content. Just because the standard version is £20 (or so) the DLC is still full price and would cost more than the game. Whilst they could make more money from the DLC if they sold it separately per person, I think that uptake of it would be low anyway so its probably better to package it with the game anyway.
I think its a great game - more RPG than straight out story like Uncharted. The Survival mode adds a lot more replayability. I don't think the 'story' is as good as the first but the game-play is actually better. Overall the improvements to the game make it better than the reboot though and it ended up being one of my top games of last year.
@BAMozzy
Maybe it's because I like the new characters (heroic and villainous) better but I thought taking them into account the story in Rise was better than the reboot.
Sucks that the PS4 version had to come out a whole year later, but I picked up this game way back during the first week when it was released on Xbox One. A really great game. I heard Square was satisfied with the sales, and the PC version sold way better than the Xbox One. Well whatever happens, I just a 3rd game in the series gets made.
Yeesh, apparently PS4 players will only pick this game up if it's free on PS+.....regardless of if it's a good game or not.
A "GOTY" edition with all the DLC at $60 is the right way to release this. Anything less, and you just want to bone the developers because of the publisher's exclusivity deal.
I loved the reboot being a timed exclusive is crap. Eidos started this franchise on PS1 and SEGA Saturn; why would they screw their original and biggest fanbase? I'm not even a Sony fanboy and I think this is stupid. Heck, I played the first one on my 360. Even at $30 bucks I'd have to seriously consider buying this.
@get2sammyb
I don't think value is the right line of justification. Several hundred dollars to buy an Xbone, maybe $1,000 to buy a reasonable gaming PC.
I think the main thing is it will have lost a sense of 'newness' and 'freshness' among PS4-only buyers. If they want to shift units, SE should drop it down a rung from a marketing perspective.
IMO it could really sell if they gave it a moderate discount, in the same vein as the reduced Ratchet & Clank launch price.
I also noticed the missing date at E3.
I saw a deal over the weekend where this was £12 - second hand of course, but I think I'll just get it on XBOX One once I've finished a few other games, paying full retail is pointless for a few trophies.
Is there any Tomb Raider game for ps4?.... i have not played a tr game for over a decade.
@brendon987
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition. Great game but just a warning, it's not traditional Tomb Raider. It borrows heavily from Uncharted although the pseudo-open world adds more replayability.
I wonder if the reason square arnt talking about date and price yet is because they can't? If its still locked away under the exclusivity agreement with Microsoft, i imagine the game cant be talked about or shown until that comes to an end.Sorry if any of the other commenters above already suggested that and i missed it
Would love to get this eventually, the original was great. I'd be amazed if they launched at £30 but £35-40 with all DLC would be fine with me. Here's hoping it shows up soon.
Ahh man I'd love to be playing this soon. At least it is eventually coming to PS4 though
Probably a May- June 2017 used purchase for me if released this xmas holiday.
Yes i hate these timed exclusives, but for Squenix it was just buisness in getting a big fat check from MS. The check had to be huge.
With Square Enix saying there'll be some big news regarding Tomb Raider at E3 I was assuming they announce the PS4 version along side some major DLC, but nothing.
Fairly disappointed, loved the last one was one of my favourite games last gen so was looking forward to this. Maybe part of the deal with MS was that they cannot promote the PS4 version during the year of exclusivity?.
@itshoggie i presume they never announced tomb raider ps4 at E3 for fear that the vast majority of the audience would "boo" the announcement .
@DarkmarkUnited well i own a xbox 1 too, it's a good job it does have tomb raider. Because all of it's exclusives are garbage .
If it was half price with all dlc I would definitely get it on ps4 despite getting it on xbox one because it really is a awesome game well worth playing through
It's still not a year since the game released, Xbox has a one year exclusivity deal, of course PC didn't really count in the deal because Microsoft is essentially most of the PC market. Not until, or after November 15, 2016 is when they can put out or tell much info about a PS4 port because it's essential still a Xbox and PC exclusive for now. The only info we've got was that the official Twitter and Facebook pages announced a few months ago that a PS4 version is coming, and from all the great sales Definitive Edition had on PS4, they're definitely not going to miss the opportunity. The only concern I have is how much it'll be, and will it come with all the dlc as a complete edition, the reasonable price would be $29.99, but $19.99 would make it irresistible to pass on.
I will likely buy it used from someone who has blasted through the campaign in the first week, and done with it. Sorry devs. your not getting my money on this one. They won't miss it anyway. Their still swimming in that MS payoff.
