DriveClub PS4 PlayStation 4

It hasn’t been a vintage launch for PlayStation 4 exclusive racer DriveClub, has it? In addition to Sony bungling the game’s box art and some less than stellar review scores, the title’s servers have also collapsed – resulting in a last minute delay to the complimentary PlayStation Plus release that many people have been looking forward to for over a year now.

And it seems that developer Evolution Studios is starting to feel the sting just a little bit. “We’re just as frustrated as you about the server performance issues right now,” an antsy spokesperson explained. “We want you to be racing with clubs and having fun playing challenges, not checking Facebook updates from us to see if the servers are updated yet.”

The firm continued that more information is due later today, hopefully with a release date for the long overdue free download. That said, if you’re lucky and own the full version, you may be able to connect to the ‘net yet. “The servers are up and running, but they are hitting their performance limits,” the message continued.

“If and when you get online, you should not have any connectivity issues during the remainder of your session. When you finish and disconnect, you’ll free up a space for someone else. This is obviously not ideal, especially given that there are a lot of players waiting to connect, but that’s how it’s working right now.”

We hate commenting on server issues like this, because we just don’t know the circumstances, but it strikes us that Evolution Studios was ill prepared for this launch if its servers aren’t capable of coping with the number of players trying to connect. Seriously, surely it realised that it would have had potentially millions of people logging on at once if the PlayStation Plus version had deployed?

“The whole team here at Evolution Studios have got their shoulders to the wheel working hard to improve this situation: developing updates and upgrades to the servers – and testing these updates around the clock so that we can get them live,” the company concluded. Perhaps another 12 month delay would have helped it to better prepare?
