These reviews remind me of the game my avatar pic is from, Crystalis. In the years since it is a cult classic. It had the action/rpg elements but was seriously frustrating at times with its lack of direction. I spent money calling Nintendo Power just to get past a few parts that really had no instruction at all on how to pass them. One of them involved just standing and waiting for an event to occur, sort of like Castlevania II: Simon's Quest where you have to kneel in the corner of a screen, with an object you collected, and wait for a dungeon to unlock. That was with no direction to do those things. There is a reason there is so much hand holding tutorials now. The 80's games were at times punishingly brutal in their lack of direction. While it is possible the pendulum has swung in reaction too far the other direction, Like Legen of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, I think devs are realizing this and trying to moderate. What this means for NMS? I predict a future cult classic.
As long as there are games offering online multiplayer this SHOULD matter to gamers. Whether you are a fan of CoD, Battlefield, World of Tanks, or Neverwinter the games are more fun when the ques are full of other people who want to play. This means match making time is shorter and the MMO population is healthier for everyone. That is how you see this beyond a fanboy discussion.
I enjoy canon because I like seeing the creator's intent with the story. Dialogue options are not a huge deal to me. Mass Effect was more about the overarching story and atmosphere, same with Witcher 3, for me.
Hey Guys!... or am I just missing the input of women in the comment stream. The anticensorship crowd is not the only ones playing video games. In fact, the industry was kept alive and made into what it is today because of some of us "old timers". You are welcome. As a Christian, I do not need to subject myself to constant violence, gratuitous nudity or almost nudity either. I really enjoy video games just like this group here. Try to see it from my perspective. Amazing experiences like God of War, The Witcher, etc. become closed to people like myself as I seek to find good gaming experiences without those things. It is simple for some gamers to say, "If you don't like it don't buy it." Over the years, I have actually watched production swing in the direction you guys are calling it to. For me and gamers like me we get jumped all over for having a view that is different and we feel increasingly like the gaming world is more difficult for us to access, so it is not all well living on this side either. I also find it interesting how often gamers complain about not having gender equality in character creation or censorship but at the same time speak poorly of those who hold a different viewpoint than them. I am glad Rockstar makes amazing games, but I felt the sex scene in Red Dead Redemption as a cut scene was absolutely unneeded. The open world do anything of Grand Theft Auto also so creative and talented work but I miss out because of the sex and violence. I know, I know, there's always Nintendo. I am just suggesting maybe if devs could have an option to turn off those elements without missing out on story content that would be good. I am glad to see so many gamers with different backgrounds playing now. We all just have to remember that it is not always about just making games for our own view point and personal tastes.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi you said, "The image is a cartoon of butchered meat, I don't understand why the species of the meat is relevant? Children shouldn't be raised in bubbles, what does it achieve? If one would like to play a 'balanced'?" as well as, "...and for goodness sake don't let them watch the news!!!" (last quote in sarcasm.
On your first point, your "meat cartoon" is photo realistic so it is made to look as real as the game engine allows. It is by no means crayons and water color as you try to put it. Secondly, the relevance of my stories is attached to your callousness towards exposing young minds to disturbing images in the name of art and a cry of censorship. Kids do deserve protection from harm as much as possible which is the role of parents and adults. That protection is the "bubble" you refer to. Then again, someone who does not have the responsibility nor has experienced what happens to children who are subjected to violence and violent images only sees an image. You might be desensitized to violence already, animated or otherwise, but other children are not and that "bubble" they are in is their innocence.
@Bad-MuthaAdebisi your opinions are fine for yourself but when you are talking about how other people should be raising their children it is pretty obvious you do not have much experience with them. I spent the better part of an hour last night listening to a young teen share the trauma she is experiencing 6 months after the fact her father shot and killed himself on her back porch. The bullet holes from the ammo are still in the building and each time she heads to the backyard there is a grim reminder of her father's act that simultaneously took him from her family and ended a reign of physical abuse in her life. Is that real enough for you? So, when you suggest children should be exposed to disturbing image in games, movies and art to show them "real life" I see students I work with suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, anxiety and bi-polar disease. Most of it needlessly. I see a child pick up an rocket propelled grenade and point it at an adult in the military because they have seen violent acts that would put GTA and COD to shame. Just because horrible things are on YouTube and the news does not mean children have to be exposed to it. Same goes with video games, movies and books. Let them have their innocence as much as possible because there is enough in the world that will attempt to rob them of it soon enough.
I have to agree with the last comment. It would be different if this were in-game material. It is promo material which means posters, banners, pop-ups on websites, commercials on YouTube, etc. As an adult, the Witcher became to dark graphic for me and I had to get rid of it. As a balanced view the art, design, writing, and RPG elements were fantastic. It just became too much over time. As an adult some of the images were disturbing and made it difficult to sleep at nights. I do not want an 6-9 year old child, who constantly wants to visit GameStop (in the US) pointing out the sliced up man on the poster in the store or calling me over to check out the image that just came up on the computer. Put it in the game if you want, CD Project Red, but advertise it to the public differently.
There was a day and age that most of us got our start into video gaming with a platformer. It I agree, @get2sammyb, last gen made them sound like they are now irrelevant. The Jak and Daxter series is one of my favorite on PS2. I know people now affiliate Naughty Dog with Uncharted, but to me, they will always be "the ones who made the Jak and Daxter games".
The older I get the less twitch FPS I am into. Reflexes not being what they used to be and such. Titanfall looks meh-ch to me. I hope the FPS lovers enjoy it though.
@sammyb The tutorials get you started just fine as there was a pretty steep learning curve coming over from PC yet I feel I know the game much better on PS4 now. I grant that the menus and dials take getting used to. Additionally, one who sank many hours into this game on PC I want freedom to set my own control scheme because the ones included are not that great.
Where I disagree with you is about premium, gold, and balancing. Wargamming has been pretty fair about balancing the premium vs. f2p in terms of match making. I also think @sammyb was a bit harsh on the War Gaming's gold earning opportunity. I have found on the PC version virtually every patriotic holiday (at least in the US) features weekends of free premium. At each of the major holiday's (again in the US) Thanksgiving and Christmas War Gaming has gifted players, who log in on those days, Free Elite Tanks. Some gift tanks have definitely been better than others, but those who have been faithful since their early days have some really nice Premium tanks just for logging into the game during those periods. On non patriot or major holiday weekends, WG also holds events that allow a player to earn free gold. Some weekends WG's own players play and the player that destroys their tank earns gold for that. In all fairness, to those who enjoy this game and play it regularly, WG is pretty generous with the gold.
WG will probably continue to include other forms of play in future updates as they did the PC version. They even hosted a couple month long event that gave you top tiered elite tanks to race and shoot one another. That was different.
WG frequently updates this game and a large part of that has been Match Making (MM). They nerf OP guns, speeds and viewing. Is it always a great update? No. Anyone who has played or reviewed the game tutorials may have noticed you drive and shoot tanks in them that are not currently available. The last challenge uses a British Matilda. You can bet updates are coming to include British, Japanese, Chinese tanks not currently available. WG will probably add additional tank lines in the three current nations to pursue as well. Let us at least acknowledge that this game has only been out of Beta on PS4 for 5 days.
Let us also acknowledge how addicting the gameplay actually can be as you learn to play better. Like many things there are YouTube videos to teach you how to get better as well as what perks and skills to match which types of tanks.
Additionally, the PS4 version makes easily available features such as platoon chat that require additional apps and hardware on PC. I would change that you could platoon chat privately in future updates.
This game is not Call of Duty, or as accessible as a two-button platformer. Remember that WG advertises that this game is both arcade & simulation. I agree that there is a pretty steep learning curve, but if you will put in the time, or join a platoon with an experienced player you can learn to understand why this game prints millions for WG each year. It is fun, addictive, competitive, and as complex as you are willing to go, WG will reward players who are willing to try new tank lines, go after competitive players, and merely log in with free gold, premium days, and premium tanks.
While I understand it will not be fore everyone I just wanted to give a more balance view of this great game. In comparison, Hardware Rivals does not even compare to World of Tanks that game is to WOT what Mario Kart is to Grand Turismo.
@sub12 I have put in many hours on PC before getting rid of mine. It is more on the arcade side of things. Tanks are silohueted with team and enemy colors. SPG's provide a map-like aerial view. The tanks include many prototype tanks that never saw the battle lines. I am interested to see how well the aiming ports to the PS4. Aiming the cannon and turret with a mouse was pretty much second nature. It is a slower paced shooter for those whose twitch reflexes might not be online FPS tuned. They do a good job with giveaways during patriotic weekends and national holidays i.e. Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. (at least in the US). I really enjoyed the game.
This is definitely a game I am excited about. This article also brings up another game in No Man's Sky. The idea of being in such a large place and nobody you know to encounter along the way definitely diminishes appeal of the game.
@themcnoisy Sony fanboy coming through? Sony has their bread and butter franchises just like the other two. I think the breadth and scope come from Sony and Nintendo for sure.
I don't own a Vita and am currently unimpressed with it for its pricepoint. The 3DS and DS are killing the Vita. This is a great idea and would definitely tempt me into owning one. Remote play, if as good as they say would sell the Bundle. But is the Bundle only a Black Friday to Christmas deal? I think it would sell well past that but I hope to wait until spring to purchase PS4. More time for games to release and system updates and patches to release. I purchased a Black Friday Wii U last year and feel like I got burned bad on that.. I feel it is better to wait a little (especially for a tax return) and let the system settle in some.
