Square Enix has released a brand new trailer for Final Fantasy XV which focusses on the game's open world and the environments that you can find within it. From sprawling countryside to bustling city streets, just about everything's on show in this latest video.
As always, the role-playing release certainly looks the part, and we're seriously impressed by the amount of detail that's on offer. Plus, the day and night cycle looks especially sumptuous - an important element in making an open world feel alive these days.

Well if the combat isn't good I guess it's b/c they spent 10 years making the world. And all of that cityscape is making me want the FF7 remaster even more. But this will do for now.
@rjejr I hate the combat as it is from the demos. But it does look good. I hope they sort the frame rate out too, it was jerky as hell in the main demo.
I love FF, I have them all, multiple times on every format (bar NES) pretty much but I'm just not feeling it with this. It's still on pre-order, obv, along with 7R, but I dunno. Just a bit meh.
@Drawfull "...but I dunno. Just a bit meh." Maybe games like Skyrim and the Witcher have altered our expectations but I echo your sentiments.
Maybe it shows that much of the beauty of what made Final Fantasy special really did lie with Hironobu Sakaguchi.
@shosbu the problem is that they're too bothered what the action looks like. I don't think they've dropped the ball on the stories (what should be FF stories, I'm not expecting TLOU of UC game detail here), they've lost the plot with control. Because we play this series for the story, for the RNG mechanics, for the customisation, exploration and wonder. The game should just work. It doesn't need 'modern' combat, it doesn't need 'real time' action - we can all get that elsewhere.
It's like they said (with a little reference to FFXIII Lightning Returns), "We're selling all these games, but imagine how many players will buy it if it's real time combat", without thinking about how many fans they'll rile up by getting rid of the one constant in the series.
The combat in FF had always been "spam X for great justice". And summons that are great when.....not sober.... for context, my 5 year old daughter beat the demo without help and she struggles with little big Planet. clearly the combat is not the reason to play the game.
@Mega-Gazz Exactly, but you've got it backwards in my opinion. The combat was a means to an end. You could make the game artificially difficult, but the combat just got you from A to B. If I have to concentrate on button combos, I'd prefer to be playing something else. I'd rather be grinding levels, finding and modding equipment, unlocking new spells that I can pick by highlighting the spell itself than frantically whipping the camera around to see if I can 'warp' to somewhere to give me an advantage.
Final Fantasy has always (even 13, 13-2) been about using tactics to defeat the enemies efficiently. real time combat is a completely different kettle made out of fish. They are going to alienate many fans.
@shosbu Absolutely - Lost Odyssey was the last great final fantasy - and that was on the x360 and wasnt even a final fantasy game! Sakaguchis 4,6,7,8,9 and 10 were all amazing.
I don't know, I think you all are being a little harsh. If keeping everyrhing the same was good enough, then they would have, but sales were slowly going down with each iteration. They have the unenviable task of trying to appease the core fans and bringing in a whole new generation of fans to offset the price of development. I honestly think they have poured alot of passion into this one and I expect it to be one of the top 3 games of the year, along with UC 4 and NMS.
Should of stuck with turn based, look's lovely though.
@Drawfull I'm still planning on buying the console w/ the game, so if they do improve the combat at least I won't go in with negative feelings about it, never having the opportunity to play any of the demos. Frame rate could improve as well, still 4 months out. And the obligatory 2GB day 1 patch. And if they make a Neo version, well problem solved. Well except for all the current PS4 owners they'll just be sol'd and po'd. But I'm looking forward to it, first time I'm really looking forward to an FF game since X, long long ago.
@xMEADx agreed.
ATB slooow mooo combat nostalgia no thanks. I like the combat in the demo but hope squeenix fix the framerate issues. Ff13 combat was fun.
I don't think its running on PS4 unless they were able to pull off some miracles since the demo. The demo didn't look very good and constantly droped to 20fps.
The game looks great! I can't wait for the final product.
Yes there is a change to real time combat but so what?
Things change it is still a great series. No game is identical that is what is so great about Final Fantasy.
The game seems to have a great story, great music great graphics, open world, massively large envronments...
I can't wait.
I agree with everything @Drawfull says. This game could have an amazing story and characters (highly doubtful on that one) but having to spend over 50 hours with that awful simplistic combat to see it is a real turn off. I honesty don't even think that the combat itself looks visually impressive, it reminds me of the animated moves from FFXIV ARR.
The sad thing is (for my own selfish reasons) this will probably sell extremely well and there will be no going back to anything remotely tactical.
Personally i think ff12 has the beat combat in the whole ff series, they could have expanded on that makw it more deep, interesting leveling paths and able to control all characters tactically. Or go witcher 3 route with final fantasy themes. Hope ff15 will surpise us though. Atleast its open world and pretty i guess. Jusy hope the story and characters are gona be good..
@qsduong I love the gambit system, it's a shame they only used it once.
