Re: PS5's Market Share Is Expanding Significantly in Xbox's Backyard

jcvandan

@BranJ0 games, Microsoft still doesn’t really have any. It’ll be years before the Bethesda buyout pays dividends for them, and even then it remains to be seen if it’s worthwhile because I suspect Bethesda are done as a developer (I do realise they have some great studios like arkane). Everyone who had a ps4 is going to get a ps5 by default I suspect due to BC so already they’ve got a bigger share due to the ps4 base. Then you have people who didn’t own a ps4 get access to a collection of absolute classic first party Sony games on ps5. If you get a series x you get pretty much nothing you can’t get on the PlayStation.

Re: Saints Row Goes Gold a Month Before PS5, PS4 Release

jcvandan

@Max_the_German without really wanting to defend the practice...they do it because 99% of people don't care, and marketing departments have to pay large amounts of money quite a while in advance to book advertising. Pushing a release date costs lots of money, so most publishers will think why not just do a day 1 patch if nobody really cares. I'd also like to point out that in the days before patching games went out with game breaking bugs on disc all the time, you just didn't hear much about it and when it happened to you, you just accepted it 'cuz games'.

Re: Weird West (PS4) - Ambitious Top-Down RPG Comes Close to Greatness

jcvandan

@Ward_ting they date back to the mid-late 90's with games such as System Shock and Deus-Ex. It basically means an action adventure game (could be FPS/3rd person or anything), or maybe an RPG, that allows a lot of freedom in how you achieve the objectives. Dishonored, Prey, Deathloop are recent examples. There aren't many studios doing this these days apart from Arkane. I guess because they are expensive to make due to all the possibilities in the gameplay, but they are also not hugely popular so difficult to make money off. I think in the RPG genre Larian have done this type of game exceptionally well with the Divinity Original Sin games.

Re: Poll: What Is Your PS5, PS4 Game of the Year 2021?

jcvandan

@nessisonett I'm in the same position. Almost done with the factory so not far to go I think. I have to say I really like the factory section and I think it breaks the res curse of terrible last 2/3 hours. It's genuinely scared me, the industrial sci/fi aesthetic is really creepy.

Re: Horizon Zero Dawn Patch 1.54 Fixes Crashing Issues on PS5

jcvandan

I was really disappointed with this game. Bounced off it after 5 hours. I thought the character movement was really poor and the combat didn't feel fluid. Also the quests were very boring with just 'go here kill 10 things' etc. Beautiful world though, and interesting story. I don't think it helps that I had just replayed Sekiro before this and the movement and combat in that game is transcendent.

Re: PS5, PS4's Elden Ring Is 'Very Difficult But Can Be Handled'

jcvandan

@FatalBubbles I get what you're saying but personally, something doesn't have to be fun and smooth all the time for it to be a good time. The whole part of the fun of these games is the massive frustration, because when you overcome it it's unbelievably satisfying. Think about puzzles, any sort of puzzle, what you're saying is a puzzle should be easy otherwise people won't like it. On the contrary, the fact that a puzzle is very hard is the reason people like it because once they solve it they get a big rush. Imo the From games are like this. It's just a really different sort of experience, and when people complain about it I just think why don't you play literally any other game?

Re: PS5, PS4's Elden Ring Is 'Very Difficult But Can Be Handled'

jcvandan

@FatalBubbles my thoughts on this, are that if there was an easy option then the majority of people would take it and have a worse experience, myself included. The whole game is built around the difficulty, it would be like a bullet hell shooter with hardly any bullets. I do get why people think there should be easy modes, but I am also glad Miyazaki thinks he just wants to make difficult games. Also another thing people rarely point out is that From games have summons which is essentially the easy mode. On Demon's Souls Remake I summoned on most of the bosses and it never took more than a few attempts.

Re: Talking Point: Would You Buy a PS1, PS2, or PS3 Emulator for PS5?

jcvandan

@Darth_Stofi you should take a look at a decent upscaler. I bought an Open Source Scan Converter. It works great, upscales with zero lag. It's pricey (about £150) but it will work on all your consoles as long as you have VGA/RGBScart/Component cables for them. The Wii playing gamecube games looks really really good, as does dreamcast and PS1. Ps2 is the worst looking but it's still servicable.

Re: Huge PS Store Indie Sale Discounts Lots of Smaller PS5, PS4 Games

jcvandan

@Jackpaza0508 what's the control scheme like? I actually cancelled my PS5 launch day copy of this due to the review on here saying it was really fiddly to build custom tracks, and that would be my main reason for playing it. I spent hours and hours building vomit inducing death traps on Rollercoaster Tycoon back in the late 90's!

Re: Hitman 3's Progression Carryover Website Collapses, IO Interactive on the Case

jcvandan

It's absolute horseshit that they force you to have a connection to actually play these games. I remember playing Sapienza on Hitman 2016 for a good hour, only to realise at the end that none of my progress was saved due to me having connection issues. It is ***** bollocks they haven't changed the game to work properly offline. I'm all for using servers to add extra stuff into the game, but there's absolutely no reason to not allow a user's progress to be uploaded asynchronously when they do eventually get a connection. Apparently the issue still persists in Hitman 2 even though most of the online stuff like elusive targets are no longer even active!

It sounds like they're going to drop the Hitman series for a while after this, and I really hope they patch out all this nonsense in the future.

Re: The Last of Us 2 Sweeps The Game Awards, Wins Game of the Year

jcvandan

Really happy Laura Bailey won an award, I think it's one of the all time great vocal performances in games. It was full of nuance, and Abby was the character that made the game for me, I found her a lot more likeable than Ellie. Which is absolutely mental considering she was the 'big bad' initially. That alone just shows the level of the writing in this tale, really great stuff. Can't wait for the PS5 patch to play it through again.

Re: Hands On: Best Uses of PS5 DualSense Controller So Far

jcvandan

@theheadofabroom I don't think that is a realistic comparison. This will be pretty easy to implement once the knowledge of how to do it is out there. You could easily provide developers with a library of pre-done sensations for ground types etc. It doesn't require any sort of rewrite like motion controls do, it's purely an additive feature.

Apparently Sony have built the API for the haptic feedback to work with sounds as well, so devs can build a sound clip that translates to the dual sense motors. I can imagine that making it really simple to do (I'm a developer so have an idea about this).

Re: Some PS5 Owners Are Experiencing Rebuild Database, External HDD Woes

jcvandan

@Oz_Momotaro I would suggest that it probably is normal, but in years past there was no social media so there could have been a lot of consoles failing but nobody would know. Also, magazines probably wouldn't report on it as it would be a month later by the time it happened, and magazines didn't really discuss this type of thing back then unless it was a really major issue. It's very hard to realise the impact that social media has had on this sort of thing.

Re: Planet Coaster Takes a Ride to PS5 At Launch

jcvandan

@ShaiHulud my exact thoughts, I've ordered both so Planet Coaster can be a nice palate cleanser when DS gets too much. I love From games but struggle to play for more than an hour or so as I find them very intense.
