It was a huge night for The Last of Us: Part II at The Game Awards, as the game scooped seven awards in total – including the most prestigious of all, Game of the Year. In an emotional speech, director Neil Druckmann thanked the family and friends of all Naughty Dog employees, who supported the team throughout the creation of the project.
In addition to the main award, the sequel also attracted accolades for the following:
- Best Game Direction
- Best Sound Design
- Best Performance (Laura Bailey as Abby)
- Best Narrative
- Best Action/Adventure Game
- Innovation in Accessibility
It was a big night for Sony, as Ghost of Tsushima also picked up a couple of awards, including Best Art Direction and the previously announced Player’s Choice, rounding out a grand total of nine awards for the publisher. Not a bad return at all!
Some of the other highlights included Best Community Game to Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout, Best Sports/Racing Game to Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2, Best Music to Final Fantasy VII Remake, while Elden Ring was deemed the Most Anticipated title.

Although I don't think it deserved GOTY, this was an amazing title and one of the best of 2020, happy for the team and can't wait for their nest project, hopefully a new IP!
Game of the year? Not at all. It deserved best accessibility and that’s about it. Apart from the issues the game has, Naughty Dog’s actions should invalidate them from getting such an award.
BRACE FOR IMPACT
@Akurusu Cry more
Congrats to ND, I like the gameplay and graphics of the game but I didn't like the story at all. I do want to know if most players like the game, I think the game is made for the people (or the writer) that didn't like the first game story. I want to know if the game sells better than the first one though.
I'm glad the game didn't win the player choice award, it will be super awkward if the game win player choice award while in the real world the physical version of the game and it's special edition is already discounted and it's still not selling lol.
Game awards represents no one but themselves. Fakest award show ever
@jmac1686 death stranding was better than last of us 2. Game awards are irrelevant.
Ghost of Tsushima is better. Change my mind.
Vindication! Congrats to Neil and the entire Naughty Dog Team! Hoping they make a new game (Savage Starlight) before they circle back and close out the trilogy.
@jmac1686 Give me a box of tissues please
@Arugula Bingo.
@BNAG_Gamer Don’t post spoilers dude, and people dislike the game for other reasons.
One of my favorite games of 2020. Still think of The space scene, and it’s just walking around.
Narrative, Acting, Directing... also deserved.
Just like it deserved. Great to see it sweep. Sorry but when you compare each part of TLOU2 to every other game this year it was better outside maybe music which funny enough it didn't win.
@BNAG_Gamer Exactly. Just b/c a character died that people didn't think should've they want to call the game trash. It's absurd.
@PSfan4Life22 story was ridiculous and forgettable. Characters were all unlikable irritating. Gameplay was the same as 1st game. Truly best game of 2020 lmfao
It's going to be raining salt. People saying the awards are irrelevant while also being upset by the selections. People who wouldn't be saying that if their choices won.
@BNAG_Gamer Joel meant a lot to some people. How can you advocate empathy and treat people like babies with the “boo hoo” dig?
Yes TLOU2 wins
The haters cry more
Still haven’t played it. Probably won’t anytime soon because the 1st game didn’t click with me. Crazy, I know. But congrats nonetheless.
Best action adventure should've been given to Doom all other are well deserved
@BNAG_Gamer why should we have empathy for abby?? - shes a murderer - her father is at best an attempted murderer - and after all that ending sucked - ellie should have gutted that b***h
plot is so terrible that despite the last of us being my favourite game of all time i couldn't bring myself to even play part 2 - great game i'm sure but ***** story
@Scoobijohn so you haven't even played it. Awesome.
@naruball no because i know the story sucks and The Last of Us was a game totally based on its story - i'm sure in part 2 the actual game is probably much better but thats not what i want from it - i want a story i'm emotionally invested in and where it pays off that investment
Last of us 2 was good, prob deserved a couple of those awards but I don’t think it was game of the year. I guess it’s down to opinions but for me it didn’t really bring anything new to the table other than a bit of controversy/shock value. GoT seemed more goty material to me
@Medic_Alert oh yes i know joel has killed many people - but i would argue they weren't exactly innocent though - abby's story is a straight up planned and plotted revenge murder - fine but done try and make out like shes a goodie - and as she is the antagonist of joel and ellies story and that is the story i'm already invested in - i dont want play out her story i just want to kill her
its just not a compelling story - trying to make people see two sides rarely if ever works from a story telling perspective
@stuzster you are indeed correct everyone is entitled to their own opinion - but for game of the year i dont think a game that so many people actively dislike should be in contention
Such a good game!
@Akurusu by your reasoning every AAA developer should be invalidated. They all do the same things.
Yet people like you have a very specific bug up their asses about Naughty Dog because ‘reasons’. We’ve heard the ‘reasons’. So be quiet.
My game of the year is Nioh 2. I’m not interested in games which try to be films or arbitrary awards ceremonies.
All I wanted was for this to win game of the year and Abby to get best performance. The abuse this year has been embarrassing and it's nice to see something positive for them.
I really liked the last of us 2 but the story was not original in fact it receives the same reaction by fans as the walking dead did when negan introduced Lucille to a few heads.
When you look at the two situations and draw comparisons you can only come to one conclusion....
MANBABIES!
Awards are BS and people fight over them for no reason haha.
That said, even ND said part 1 is about love and part 2 is about hate. They wanted players to hate the character in the first place.(and then go through a journey of forgiveness and 'learning' compassion with the used to death revenge theme) I mean dont be surprised that backfired for some. Part 1 is a game about Joel and Ellie. It is what it is.
Part 2 is a different game. It's fine.
Edit
Part 1 was about Joel and Ellie but the background setting was important. Is that humanity worth 'saving'? Or is there a 'better' humanity? Is the children sacrifice worth it for a delusion of 'potential' greater good? ..there was so much potential to explore.. and deconstructing logical immunity evolution but going for a 'chosen one' explanation but do nothing with it? 🤷♂️
If its voted for by the access media it doesn't count. Only one that mattered went to GoT.
No surprise. I think it was the biggest disappointment this year but that’s just my opinion. Ghost of Tsushima and Ori for me are both better games.
Really happy Laura Bailey won an award, I think it's one of the all time great vocal performances in games. It was full of nuance, and Abby was the character that made the game for me, I found her a lot more likeable than Ellie. Which is absolutely mental considering she was the 'big bad' initially. That alone just shows the level of the writing in this tale, really great stuff. Can't wait for the PS5 patch to play it through again.
Absolutely deserved, the only real game of the year, keep pushing the boundaries Naughty Dog.
So happy this game won as it was an absolute masterpiece for me. Perfect end to the PS4 era. Played through 3 times and will play again on PS5 eventually. Would be interested if they ended the trilogy with some sort of happy end. As mentioned above, the first is about love, the second about hate, perhaps the third will be hope.
Although saying that would love a new IP from them. They've done action adventure, they've done horror, how about sci-fi...
Hahahahahahahahaha.
Just admit it haters, you simply have crappy taste.
😜
@Col_McCafferty lol gamers voted for GoT. Access media voted for TLoU2, their opinion is meaningless.
@Pikki don't think anyone cares. GoT got the only one that matters.
Love the last of us 2 but it aint for everyone and thats fine. Different opinions make the world more interesting.
The chap in these comments shouting about how bad it is while also saying he hasnt played it is just ridiculous.
The whole message of the game is learn to let things go, enjoy what you have and dont let anger or hate take over from it. Theres a lot of irony in that when you read a comments section for this game.
Well deserved. The LOU games are the peak of narrative-driven modern gaming that few can even come close to.
TLO2 certainly deserves its place at the top of the 2020 pantheon. Just personally don't think it was the absolute best at almost every metric. I do however think it had the best balance across difference performance metrics (so GOTY is well deserved imo). Would have liked to see some more of the other awards been won by other games. But a win for Sony and single player. Games like TLOU2, GOT, etc are the strongest shield against some of today's more questionable game production practices. If 2021 has games of the quality of TLOU2 and GOT, it's a win for gamers
@CynicalGamer I agree. Always happy for a team to get regcognition but it's kind of boring for everyone else when one game wins the majority of awards. And this year we had such a great mix of different games, it's a shame more of them didn't get highlighted.
@Arnna Good thing Last of Us 2 is one of the best third person shooters ever made, then!
Good Going Naughty Dog, and glad Laura Bailey won as she did an incredible job.
They will have to give Druckman another promotion
@starbuck2212 How many gamers voted for GoT? A lot of gamers didn't know about any voting so you can't really stand on that.
@TheArt If you look at google trends its suggests not many people even know about the The Game Awards itself, probably less than 5% of gamers. I only herd of about it this year because Push Square mentioned it.
"The Last of Us 2 Sweeps The Game Awards, Wins Game of the Year"
That's all I wanted to hear. The longest linear game ever. Story is not your usual good guy beats bad guy. And yes I predicted a lot of people liking Abby in the end, and it's not about being forced to like her by playing dog-fetch or any other nonsense. Me personally from Part I, Ellie has always been quite annoying. I mean David just wanted to be friends lol. Even in Part II she hurts Joel in so many instances. Abby treats her loved ones better. Combat is highly satisfying. Graphics is lovely as always from ND. Game of the Year!
Good for ND, really enjoyed the game, although the first was a lot better imo. Think the only real problem I had was the story felt a bit dragged out, think it would have been better to cut quite a bit out in the end, could have done a cut scene just to finish it off. But still really enjoyed it.
@JapaneseSonic @Medic_Alert Yea I remember he was a paedo but I'm talking about the first instant they met after Ellie killed the deer or something, he was trying to be nice but Ellie was just rude.
And here we are again.... Arguing about this amazing game witch deserves some criticism but at the and it's just a beautiful game and story. For those who doesn't like it why don't you just let it go? That's ok just leave this game for those who likes it.. I voted for Ghost of Tsushima but was a hard decision. LOU2 is a very good game in every aspects for me
Ghost of Tsushima deserved a bit more awards if you ask me but well deserved win for the Naughty Dog.
@Texan_Survivor "Yeah, you can tell that this show was a mess and made by people who know nothing about video games."
Err Geoff Keighley lifelong gamer, industry alumni since 1994, creator, director and host of the Game Awards... knows nothing about Video Games.
Keep retro-fitting things into your own narrative because MY game didn't win / game me or my groupthink hate didn't win.
Look I feel Ori should have won something, it's brilliant, it didn't. But the reality is every game nominated is one of the best games of the year in that category and therefore a winner, but only one can take the prize.
Laughing at all the haters. The whiners voice reward means nothing the true game of the year goes to TLOU Part 2 dont like it just quit gaming....
Persona 5 Royal was my favourite game of last year, but it's fairly niche so I guess it wasn't going to Win.
@Darylb88 it's also a re-release of an older game (but then again so were some games in other categories)
@Akurusu I understand where you’re coming from, if you say you like the game you are praised, if you hate the game you are satan. These guys talk about opinions on games like they respect each other but when it comes to the Last of Us part 2 they treat it like it can do no wrong. I have never played the game but plan on doing so, but these people should just let you have your opinion and be done with it.
@Arnna good on you, Nioh is great!
@DualshockInfinit Because their opinions hold no weight, they can't list valid reasons as to why they dislike the game apart from "story". They completely disregard the graphics, second-to-none cinematics, deeply satisfying combat, intense encounters etc and that doesn't make you sound like a valid critic.
On the topic of this game, I haven't played it so I can't really give my opinion on it it is good/bad/indifferent. What I do think is that maybe too much emphasis is put on "best game" etc. I find these awards just tend to cause arguments and toxicity between those that hate the last of us part 2 and those who basically hate the haters of the last of us part 2. Let's just say it's okay if you like or don't like the game. If you are laughing at the "haters" (or those that don't like the game) because the game was successful then you are in that echo chamber.
The split between critical and public opinion is a sign of a maturing industry. People probably didn't get as worked up when Pac Man dominated the '81 Arcade Game of the Year Awards.
These arguments here are similar to those made about movies during awards season where sometimes the winners align with popular taste, but sometimes they leave a bunch of people scratching their heads. History is sometimes unkind to the winners (Forrest Gump, Shakespeare in Love), but they all had some quality that compelled those in the industry to select them. Unfortunately, the arguments around the winners often boil down to "I didn't like it, therefore it has no value" or "You don't like it so you're clearly a moron." Personally, I'm in the camp of "I haven't played TLOU2 because didn't make it past the basement in the first game because it was scary and I kept dying."
@jmac1686 He's basically written it off completely. I'm half way in now, it's an absolutely brilliant achievement. Another step to blurring the line between game and film.
@TheArt A game doesn’t get an award for graphics, sure people hate it because ****** died but there are people out there who never liked the combat since the first one and only play it for the story. Then there are people who like the story but not the presentation of it. There are valid criticisms out there, I looked for them because I haven’t played it yet and wanted to know why people hate it. I like the story of the first one along with the combat and I will play the second one and form my own opinion.
@DualshockInfinit How do you play an Interactive Entertainment product and not care about gameplay but just the story. Then those people should be watching movies and have no business with games.
@TheArt They don’t LIKE IT, not “ I DONT PLAY IT FOR THE GAMEPLAY”. A video game reviewer who played hundreds of games doesn’t like the combat. IT IS PERSONAL PREFERENCE! Not an analysis of the combat being good or not.
@wiiware Apparently Druckman wanted to make TLOU1 with the story he put in TLOU2 but he was outvoted in it, thank God! He is someone who should stay far far far away from revenge stories as he hasn’t a clue how to do them..
@DualshockInfinit But you just said this - "there are people out there who never liked the combat since the first one and only play it for the story."
Again they should be watching movies then. And the Game Awards takes story, gameplay, graphics, everything into consideration so what exactly is their point here. It shouldn't have won because of story alone... ridiculous!
@S1ayeR74 Yeah, I heard he want joel to be killed by tess in the end for tlou 1 story, but bruce rejected that idea so we get tlou 1 as we know it.
Basically he want revenge story for tlou 1 but bruce straley rejected it. Now he's fully in charge for tlou 2, we get that revenge story 😕
@TheArt combat is gameplay, and i didn't say it shouldn't have won because of the story alone I said graphics. The two pillars are story and gameplay, everything else can go in the can, if one person liked the story and powered through the gameplay to see it through means they like games enough to do that. But if they rely on story to grip them into playing more and didn't like it either gameplay or story then it all falls apart. And you said, "they cant list valid reasons as to why they dislike the game apart from the story", story is everything, in a game like Hatred you are committing human genocide. But if you change the story to fighting off aliens or something then the whole tone changes and the violence is legitimized.
@wiiware Yeap and to me it’s why they are dead as a studio now, anything Druckman wants will now be done. And for me he ruined TLOU2 and thinks way too much of himself.
People put way too much stock in these awards shows whether they be music, movies...or games now. Who cares what what has won, if you didn't like it it wouldn't matter what it won. I played tlou 2 and while it wasn't nearly as memorable to me as the first, it wasn't as terrible as some people want to paint it to be. I mean dragon age Inquisition also won goty awards and I know people hated that game, so do they really hold any meaningful weight at the end of the day?
There are a bunch of videos on YouTube talking about Neil was begging for votes and how the awards were rigged, like it's really not that serious, why do you care so much, just move on (I know tis for that clickbait revenue).
Survival is not about love it's about doing whatever it takes. That what Joel, Ellie, and Abby where. When you try to be a better person you Die not survive! In their own surroundings they were all good people.
Deserved, the haters can hate but this is an amazing game. The awards have proven that.
woke sjw game journalists goty, their goty , not ours lol we've chose ghost of tsushima , real gamers vote 47% vs 32%. 93 game journalist individuals don't represent us in anyway. go join gamespot and ign who gives alien isolation a 5 and fortnite 10/10. nobody watches their reviews , all they get is thousands of dislikes and laugh, no real game ever watches gamespot , let alone trusting and celebrating an award they entirely decide by themselves. woke sjw media
@Axelay71 the players choice have proven the opposite, the real gamers worldwide. what's proven is the wide wide gap between game journalists who don't finish games and don't know anything about gaming like gamespot and ign. these awards are tTHEIR choice. 93 individuals. not the gamers. if you trust and believe game journalists go watch gamespot review of cyberpunk
woke sjw game journalists awards, not ours, we the millions of gamers have spoken and chose ghost
@BRUTALSAM
Personally its a brilliant game which ever way it was voted for. If you agree or not makes no odds to me.
@BRUTALSAM jesus, you seem really worked up about people liking a game you dont. Might be time to reassess bud.
Pretty ridiculous imo. The game has such a flawed narrative with really badly written characters, a massive problem when the story is the whole appeal to this game. I don't see why they wouldn't give it to a game that's universally loved like GoT or Doom Eternal, instead of a game that half the fanbase disliked.
These awards are always meaningless, it wouldn't matter which game won. It won't change anyone's opinion. I personally didn't enjoy tlou2 but it was a technical masterpiece, there wasn't enough emphasis on infected for me and the characters were all dreadful. A main character being killed off is standard shock tactic from lazy writers these days. I would've liked to explore more of what the disease did to the world around them, not tackle the issues in today's society. Racism and LGBT rights are an issue for the news, not fantasy storytelling. It is such a shame that the game turned out like this, it's even spoiled the first game a bit! I am glad some people enjoyed it but they can't be that convinced if they're having to defend it on every article comment section. The trailers were very misleading, whether you liked the game or not.
It's not a Game of the Year. It's a Game of All Time.
That be honest I thought Ghost of Tsushima was a much better game, not saying last of us 2 was bad , just found ghost better
@gomersoul and sports are for real life athletes yet we have fifa and countless sports titles and shooting is for police, soldiers and real criminals yet we have Doom, COD, CP2077 AND a lot more shooter titles....... Stop talking stupid nonsense if u have nothing to say about TLOU2
@Scoobijohn
Joel previously did despicable things, this is referenced at the Pittsburgh ambush "as having being on both sides" and in meeting Tommy at the hydro dam where Tommy says he has nightmares about what Joel led/instigated to survive.
He also ends the first game arguably as the villain, in the sense he is as afraid, self serving and deceitful as most other adult people in the world.
He's a fantastic multi faceted character.
I have TLOU2 on my backlog to play, but I have a fought idea of the narrative. I get why people are upset, I just have never understood the high level of vitriol, including death threats towards actresses and creative directors.
I loved Tsushima, but will probably be able to see why the critics liked TLOU2.
I'll be happy that both will probably get another installment.
@GREGORIAN and you said what about lou2? Go back to sleep, moron
@DonJorginho well to bad they won
@Akurusu aww you mad?
@HotGoomba___Rebrand haha ok
@Taylorzombie Never said that TLOU2 was bad, it's a great game, albeit not as good as the first.
@Taylorzombie Sorry, what did you say? I was playing the official game of the decade.
@Akurusu Ignore/Block him, he's just a troll
Just finished it this evening.
Good, but found it dragged a bit. I did like how you start hating Abby and (for me anyway) end up rooting for and feeling a bit sorry for her too.
Haven't played GoT yet. It's on the pile.
The people getting all pissy over it winning GotY really need to take a look at themselves and maybe get laid. It's just an award. For a video game. Stop embarrassing yourselves.
@gomersoul.. You said Racism and LGBT rights are issues for news and not fantasy storytelling .... By your logic then we should not have Fifa or Pes cause football/soccer is for the footballers and television and guns should not be in any games as they are issues for the police/military and not for fantasy storytelling......
@Akurusu ok babe
@HotGoomba___Rebrand so You expected part 2 to be the same like part 1 i see
@HotGoomba___Rebrand troll? You can't be talking plus I'm not on here every 5 whining like you guys like doing
I still need to play The Last of Us: Part II, already spoilered about certain things, so just waiting for the PS5 upgrade to happen before I pop in my disc.
That aside, I loved Part 1 and would have voted for Part 2 if I had played it...sadly not the case so I voted for FF7 Remake where it was available.
